If your club has not received the notice, please contact me ASAP so that I can get you another copy. The deadline is December 15. If your club is electing officers in January and wishes to report late, please let me know so that we can agree on the late date. If you miss the cutoff date, your new officer and club information will not get in the 2009-10 directory. The convention OP was revised at the 2009 convention to eliminate the 50-50 show profit share requirement for the host club. We hope that this will make more clubs willing to host the convention. Please contact any Executive Committee member if your club would be interested in hosting the convention in future years. We are looking for host societies for years 2012 and beyond. It looks like winter is on its way with snow predicted here in Southern Kansas next week. I have already traded my rock hound tools for my shotgun as duck season is underway. It is also time to take a look at what we collected this summer. Janet and I collected some really nice petrified wood west of Hardtner. Winter is the time to put the rock saw to use along with the grinding, sanding and polishing wheels so you can have that new case ready for next years show. I had an opportunity to visit the Oklahoma Mineral and Gem Society’s “River of Gems” show held at the Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. Enjoyed talking to club members and visiting with rock hound friends from several other clubs. The combined Wichita Gem and Mineral and Rocky Mountain Federation show is rapidly approaching. April is not that far away and what a great way to put winter behind us. Mark the date on your calendar and plan to attend. I can promise you it will be a great show. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and safe travels over the holidays. Until next month.

Meet DeLane Cox,

your New 2010

RMFMS Vice

President.

A little about me so you will know who I am. I am the wife of Wayne Cox, the guy who got me interested in collecting rocks in the first place, and who supports me in my hobby of using those rocks (and many, many others) to make wire jewelry. We have two sons: Chris, who lives in California and is a computer graphics programmer, and Randy, who is currently working for Uncle Sam in Iraq. When Randy is not scratching in the sand, he works for AT&T as a telephone installer in Memphis, Tennessee. We currently live in Bentonville Arkansas, and are members of the Northwest Arkansas Gem & Mineral Society, where Wayne is Treasurer and I am Membership Chair. Both of us are active in producing our annual show. We have lived in this area for eight years now. We moved here from Huntsville, Alabama, where we first became interested in rocks through the local Gem & Mineral Society. I served the RMFMS as Secretary for two years, back in 06-07, and I am looking forward to working with other people and clubs that have the earth sciences as their focus. Both of us love to go out and collect rocks, then bring them home, clean them up, and see what can be cut. Of course, I prefer the stones that I can then put into my beautiful jewelry. I am also the 2010 president of the Village Art Club in Bella Vista, Arkansas, where I display and sell my jewelry in the club's art gallery. Oh, and did I mention that Wayne and I have been active in the Boy Scouts for about 35 years? I’m looking forward to meeting other rockhounds as I get to go to other clubs and other meetings. So, when you see me, say “Hi” and then point me in the direction of the pretty rocks.

2010 AFMS Webmaster

Contest Applications Available

By Dale Watts

The initial 2009 AFMS Webmaster Contest drew 46 entries from across the United States and seven regional finalists were selected for the final contest. The 2010 entry form as well as competition guidelines and score sheets are available at the AFMS web site http://www.amfed.org/web/website_contest.htm for downloading. All RMFMS clubs with web sites should consider entering the contest for 2010. The entry process is not difficult and the judging will provide clubs with input on what makes their site outstanding as well as what might be improved. It is not a determination as to the quality of the club or the club's capabilities. The first place award for 2009 went to California's Terry Yoschak of Roseville's Rock Rollers Gem & Mineral Society. Rocky Mountain's winner, Bob Loeffler of Arvada's North Jeffco Gem & Mineral Club took 5th place after winning the RMFMS regional competition. Bob and the six other participants in the RMFMS received certificates at the regional show in Roswell, New Mexico on October 3. Visit Terry's site at www.rockrollers.com and Bob's site at www.peaktopeak.com/njeffco/ for examples of webmasters doing a fine job. The participants in the RMFMS competition besides Bob Loeffler were Allen Tyson,

Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society (www.csms.us); Tim Maddox, Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society (www.ttownrockhound.org); Dan Alfrey, Lake George Gem & Mineral Club (www.lggmclub.org); Leonard Deutsch, Mohave County Gemstoners (www.gemstoners.org); and Reed Pendleton, Wasatch Gem Society (www.wasatchgemsociety.com). All the participants received certificates and recognition for their webmaster work. Congratulations to all for their hard work. RMFMS deadline for the 2010 competition: January 10, 2010. Complete the form and submit two copies to Dale Watts at [email protected] or fax copies to 918-627-2693 or mail to 1742 W. Woodrow St, Tulsa, OK 74127. You can complete the form online, but it would be wise to print off copies and keep in your files. Acrobat Reader 9 is supposed to allow you to save the document to your hard drive and email, but that may not work for everyone. Best of luck to all RMFMS webmasters and get those entry forms in ASAP.

RMFMS 2010 Convention Report The Wichita Gem and Mineral Society has agreed to host the 2010 convention at their annual gem and mineral show. Show and Convention dates are April 23, 24 and 25. Setup is Thursday, April 22. Registration information will go to all member societies in December. Show packets will be sent to all registered attendees. As RMFMS Treasurer, I have a treasurer email list for 65 of the 73 member organizations. As WGMS Show Chairman, I am responsible for communicating the convention information to you. I plan to use the treasurer email list. Please let me know if there is a better contact. Be on the alert for convention mailings. They will soon be headed your way.
