National Clubsides in Seattle v World Clubsides in Limerick

Denver Barbarians and Kansas City Blues are off to Seattle and USA Rugby national

men’s clubside tournament on the weekend of August 9/10 by virtue their 1-2 f inish at

Omaha last Saturday. Barbos s lot never in real doubt, but KC required a massive defensive

effort to deny an all-ERRFU placement at nationals, repulsing a furious Glendale Raptors

assault just before t ime in the match.

World Club 7s, you say?

Yes. World Club 7s is the clubside version of IRB 7s, which is for national s ides only and

more than l ikely never the twain, shall meet. While IRB 7s competit ion (Las Vegas 7s being

the current North American leg) is sponsored and promoted by rugby’s global governorship,

the International Rugby Board, WC 7s is done by a private organization you may have heard

of before called The English Premiership. That’s organ in charge of the 15-a-side

competit ion currently known as the Aviva Premiership , and that’s England’s top domestic

club 15s rugby. Premiership’s arr ival this season brings to World Club 7s all the backing,

prestige and branding that austere organization enables.

After noting just under 200,000 attendees over four days at the Commonwealth Games in

Glasgow and a packed Twickers at the inaugural 2013 London World Club show, “Aviva

Premiership is onboard,” says former Vai l and Denver Highlanders mastermind and current

Old Blue (NY) Director of Rugby, Steve Lewis, using terms such as, “explosive and

burgeoning” to describe 7s growth rate and, “lucrat ive,” the influx of f inancial support to

the new Olympic sport.

Lewis wil l oversee a two-pronged, World Club 7-a-side attack on the weekends of 8.9/10 at

Thomond Park in Limerick, Ireland and then the following weekend, 8.16/17,at that most

awesome of rugby cathedrals, Twickenham Stadium, in London. Now, here a rub: Lewis wil l

also command his Old Blue 7s troops as they vie for national clubside prominence at Seattle

on 8.9/10, which begs the question, how can one be in two places simultaneously?

Well, short answer, one can’t; but one can turn over the helm in Limerick to able Northeast

ODA coaches Sean Horan and John McGeachy, who’l l be assisted by seasoned 7s instructor

Dave Will iams. While Limerick’s on, Lewis wil l be attending to the national championship

with Old Blue in Seattle, then he red-eyes to NYC and a further red-eye to London and sure

as Robert is your Mother’s brother, the globe-trotting rugby pilot wi l l be on hand to

command the London end of things.

The New York City Sevens side includes seven, USA Eagles 7s caps as well as a 15s cap.

“Expectations are high,” Coach Lewis reports of his squad comprised of half dozen current

7s

Page 4: Rm3r 7 31 14

Eagles 7s campers and an equal number of Olympic Development Academy (ODA) worthies.

Lewis bel ieves the team, “more talented”, than last year’s 5t h-place f inishers.

“We relish the chal lenge,” of competit ion against the best dozen clubside 7s the world has

on offer states the confident, competent coach of the f ield comprised of: New York City 7s ,

Auckland 7s, Stade Français, DHL Western Province, NSW Waratahs, Daveta (Fij i), Vodacom

Blue Bulls, San Francisco 7s , Saracens, Vancouver (BC) 7s , Munster Rugby and Moscow

clubsides at World Club 7s, Limerick on August 9, 10;

and that same field, with the omission of Daveta,

Stade, SF 7s, Sarries, Moscow and Munster; and the addition of Seattle Rugby Sevens , URBA

(Buenos Aires), Cardiff Blues, Kuban RC (Russia), RC Enisei (Russia) and Gloucester, plus a

later nominee at Twickenham, London the weekend of August 16, 17.

SkiTown Rugby Tournament takes place in Missoula, Montana this

attendance at that penultimate rugby snow show seeking the

goodest of best rugby fortune in the Treasure State. However, Vail

have elected to forego the tourney and are playing host to an early-

muster Harlequins side this Saturday, while Vail Olde Boys take on

the World subsequent the f irst match.

Steamboat Springs and Vail are headed for a confrontation as each

is undefeated and should l ike to remain in that blemishless state.

And that’l l happen, but Vail must deal with a young and dangerous

Aspen XV on the weekend prior to the clash with the ‘Boat, to

ensure a contest of the unlost.

A Big Fish Story

The Grizzl ies of Bristol Bay

I f you wonder what was the impetus for the now-annual migration of former Colorado Springs

Grizzl ies high school rugby players to the great Alaskan f ishery of Bristol Bay, you’d have to turn

the page back to last century and the 1950s. For it was stories a young Matt Ryan heard of his

great uncle’s exploits as a commercial f isherman in the vast expanse of waters off our largest

state that insti l led the yearning for the adventure and prof it to be real ized on those high seas.

“ I researched it onl ine and generated a l i st of boat skippers who f ished the Bay,” reports the

openside f lanker, who wil l take his undergraduate degree from Cal ifornia Polytechnic State

Univers ity next spring, “and emai led around 50. I received responses from a couple who told me to

come up and do my work search in person. So I bought a one-way plane t icket,” says the

confident, competent construct ion management major. “So I did, working aboard the Sunl ight I I I ,”

in 2012.

Ryan recal ls the init ial season as being, “a lot of work, of course, but more of an adventure,” and

he has come to view fishing the annual, f ive-week, Sockeye Salmon, run on the Bay as, “more of a

job,” his own sense maturing over the course of the last three years.

Regards the weather on the water, Ryan remembers ’12 and ’13 being years with “2-3 day storms

with their accompanying big swell ,” but he says, “this year was re latively tame,” though he adds

the f i rst week of 2014’s run was, “kind of choppy.”

So that Grizzly told former teammate, Dallas Frye, and he made the trek last year. Frye walked the

docks, inquir ing of boat captains their need for deckhands. No job offer at f irst , but one skipper

told the matr iculating L indenwood University junior that if he returned the fol lowing day that pi lot

would have jobs for him to do. And it was that tr ia l per iod next day that earned the hard-working

backrow a berth on the Sunlight I I I and he became a f isherman of Bristol Bay. “ It ’s one of those

things that can be gr inding and forbidding dur ing the season, but I can hardly imagine anything I ’d

rather be doing with my summer t ime,” Frye reports, “and to be honest, I catch myself

daydreaming about next season (often).”

2013/14 University of Northern Colorado Bears rugby coach Crist ian Sarmento, a f irst -year

f isherman, is no stranger to r isky business. Last year he worked on a f ire crew in the Alaskan

inter ior, cutt ing brush and f ighting forest f ires and this season he got aboard the boat that Dal las

Frye crewed, Sunlight I I I .

Sarmento, an ear ly chi ldhood education/kindergarten teacher dur ing the schoolyear, covers a

number of posit ions on the pitch for Glendale Raptors from flanker out through the centers. He

describes his rookie experience f ishing Bristol Bay as, “humbl ing.” The man known on the f ield as,

“Scar, or Scar ley”, spent a good bit of his in i t ial work week amidst the high rol l ing swell , on

Sunlight I I I , “a rol l-y boat…haul ing (nets) and hurl ing,” oft t imes in equal measure under intense

scrutiny of the ship’s captain who was sussing out Scar ley’s measure. Suff ice to say Mr. Sarmento

passed al l tests with f ly ing, red-white-and-blue colors!

Al l About the Legends

A common thread (other than the experiential education, rugby savvy and its interconnectivity

learned from legendary Colorado high school rugby coach, John Paterson) to al l three is that their

f irst boat, the Sunlight I I I , was once owned by Captain Mike Marinkovich, legendary Alaskan

skipper from whom its current owner learned the trade in the harsh, yet abiding, schoolyard of the

Bristol Bay f ishery. And has (now-ret ired) Coach Paterson has begotten an ever-increasing

mult itude of rugby players whose realm spans the globe, Captain Marinkovich’ minions continue to

imbue generat ions of f isherfolk with an appreciation for and respect of the industry.

Mt. Goliath Tour

al l im ages: Ron ald A. B usse image cap tions: Nevin B ebee

I f you’re new or used to the Denver area, an easy-going, easy-l istening Botanic Gardens Tour of

Mt. Goliath, a sub-peak of the Mt. Evans massif , may be just the thing to insti l l or improve your

knowledge of the earth whi le taking in jaw-dropping panoramas amidst the peace, serenity and

abject grandeur of the Rocky Mountain’s Colorado Front Range.

It ’s about a 60-75 minutes tr ip out from Denver to the meeting point at the Mt. Goliath Natural

Area and Dos Chappel l Nature Center where we gathered with the hiking group on a Saturday

morning and divided into smaller groups of 4-6 individuals, each with an eminently-qualif ied,

Denver Botanic Gardens (DBG) docent-guide-cum-group-leader. My neighbor had arranged the

free hik ing tour online at http://www.denverbotanicgardens.com, DBG’s website where he

obtained an information packet and l iabi l ity waivers, both essential pre-hike reads for the

relatively undemanding 1.5 mile hike through 600 vertical feet of t ransit ion zone f lora and fauna

from tundra to subalpine forest.

We accessed the 12,100+ foot trai lhead and separated into groups, each hiking off at intervals of

100 feet (or so) to ensure suff ic ient “speaking space” for each group guide as they revealed

fascinating anecdotes and tales of the natural scientists who documented the region and its wide

variety of species - our guide, Nevin Beebe, pointed out a l ine of peaks that paral le led the

Continental D ivide whose names derive from those early explorers.

Mr. Bebee spoke with an impressive professionalism, accuracy and eloquence that easi ly enabled

understanding for and appreciat ion of the thorough spectrum of sciences: he described geologic

features of cirques and moraines and the natural physics that form them; he was equally at ease

deliver ing botanic and natural science information; as

well as shar ing enthral l ing explanations of the

interaction between the plants and animals of the very

high a lt itude (11,000+ ft) c l imate regions. For Mr.

Bebee described each and every plant and animal

species that inhabits the, at (most t imes) foreboding

condit ions - wintertime 100 mile-an-hour winds

shift ing ice crystals that level everything smoothly in

that fr ig id t ime of the year - well and truly. He noted

the del icate ground-hugging plants of s imi lar

appearance, yet those that would have decidedly

different consequences should one ingest them: one

tastes good and t ’other? Well , that’ l l k i l l ya’! As we

came across the tasty ones f irst , Edible Valerian and

Geyer’s Onion, I didn’t real ly pay attention unti l we

were over the ridge and into the meadow, as it were, and confronting the Death Camas: “These

are only confused for one another when they aren't blooming.” And though I ’d already been

paying attention even though that sense was constant ly being windswept away by the astounding

360° beauty, I focused wholly. Speaking of wind, it ’s there and working its eros ive edge nearly

non-stop; and it would be a discomfort should you fai l to br ing clothing to break it at least in the

early stages of the hike that is decidedly windward unti l a nearby r idge is obtained.

Then we dropped into the set of Sound of

Music , only it was the sound of

enlightenment as our guide explained and

described the enormous amount of l i fe in

the transit ion zone and temperatures

increased considerably so that what once

was shel l-hoodee-tee shirt combo became

tee shirt only.

Mount Goliath is world-renowned for its

biodiversity. Professionals from al l over

our planet come to study the area’s

scient if ic bounty of f lora and fauna

sustained in the delicate environment.

3 r d t ime to be charm for ‘Tahs, or what? The Sydney franchise has been in this

posit ion twice before, though never with so much going for it : home match, 8-

game win streak, and knocking the socks off every opponent in that successful

interval . But ‘Tahs wil l be hosting a Crusaders club who’ve beaten them in their

two previous Super Championships, albeit at the New Zealand club’s home

grounds; and the Crusaders have been victorious since 2004 v the 2014 league-

toppers.

As ever, the battle wil l be won up front by the action of the tight f ive and

f lankers in obtaining and maintaining possession the pil l . Every one of the

sixteen men in the packs a potential blockbuster be they young, old, or

otherwise counted. And them what ain’t on their respect ive countries’ RC

rosters wi l l be looking to state their case right here, r ight now. So expect no

sitt ing down unless things go squirrel-ways and the Sir assays a tenner, or

worse… over-eager could put one under-dunder.

Crusaders have Dan Carter returned from rehab/sabbatical and that appears to

be a signif icant difference in the chemistry of the seven-time Super Rugby

tit l ists. Sig-diff as in BIG-LARGE and chemistry as in EXPLOSIVE; that’s the

charge that’ l l be issuing forth out of Crusaders near-channel gunners when it’s

not sticking ‘Tahs in far corner with the tactical boot of either #12 Carter, or

#10, Col in Slade.

Those strategic downfield lofts of the vis itors must be countered by homeboys

capable back-three led by fullback and top try-scorer in 2014 Super XV Rugby

league competit ion, Israel Folau, abetted by f lyers Rob Horne and Alofa Alofa -

the outcome of the catch-and-carry, which’l l be on, could very well determine
