ver wondered what the bottom of the Harlem Riv-er looks like?

It’s not full of fish or tires or sunken boats, but Marble Hill born and raised artist Abigail DeVille’s

installation, “Harlem River Blues,” depicts it being piled high with Johnny Mathis and Ste-vie Wonder records.

Ms. DeVille’s grandmother, who died last year after living in Marble Hill for 40 years, was the inspiration for the work, on display through January as part of the Lehman Col-lege Art Gallery’s Space Invaders exhibit.

The installation is crammed into a small video room at the Lehman gallery and in-cludes the artist’s late grandmother’s be-longings and furniture, including dozens of her records.

The records, which are scattered on the floor and walls near a picture of her grand-mother, can be read as messages.

Johnny Mathis’ “Good Night, Dear Lord.” is near an old Chess record of Moms Mably’s “The Funniest Woman in the World.” Kenny Rogers’ single “She Believes in Me” is near Steve Wonder’s “You are the Sunshine of My Life.”

The installation is dark and mysterious — a television perpetually broadcasts fuzz in the background — and it mimics an under-water feeling of grief.

“She wants you to feel like you’re un-derwater,” the art gallery’s director Susan Hoeltzel said. But it also brings the viewer into a Marble Hill apartment with roaches and old furniture.

Ms. DeVille is one of 18 artists that invad-ed Lehman College for Space Invaders, cu-rated by Karin Bravin. For this show, which runs through Wednesday, Jan. 9, the college itself became a canvas.

While most of the installations are within

the Lehman Art Gallery’s walls, some spill out onto grounds. At the gallery’s entrance is Rachel Hayes’ brightly colored fabric piece, which moves with the weather. Last week, with a little help from the sun, her piece transformed the gallery’s lobby into a church.

You walk in here and it’s like stained glass windows,” Ms. Hoeltzel said.

In the gallery’s entrance, vinyl decals of small green weeds, created by Kim Beck, look as if they’re growing out of the wall.

Outside, DeWitt Godfrey wedged 15 mas-sive steel tubes beneath an underpass on Lehman’s campus. Students can sit on the gi-ant rusted steel ovals or walk through them.

Dahila Elsayed installed a series of yel-low and orange flags around the schoool’s community garden. The work was not only constructed for the spot, but was inspired by Lehman’s peculiar mascot, the lightning bug. The insects use a call and response, flash and counterflash, to communicate. The flags are emblazoned with words such as “Subtle Signals,” “Loud + Clear,” “Forward Urges,” “Glowing” and “Some Sparks.”

After the 18 artists were selected for the installation, Ms. Hoeltzel said they walked around the campus to claim territory.

The weren’t any battles over space, but Ms. Hoetzel said, “We had to work with the college on what was possible.”

Manhattan artist Diana Cooper chose a corner space in one of the exhibition rooms.

“It’s a funky kind of space,” Ms. Cooper said last week, while standing in front of her installation.

Instead of ignoring the more utilitarian aspects of the room, including an exit sign and air conditioning vents, she used them in her piece. She took photos of the exit signs and vents, printed them out and placed them nearby. It’s hard to tell what’s real. “I like the fact that you might mistake one for the other,” she said. “Photography’s capacity of fooling you is becoming more and more ad-vanced.”

Though the gallery is open, her installa-tion is still a work in progress. She stopped by last week to tweak it.

Co-op makes the most of its park-like settingF rom the ninth floor apartment at 5550

Fieldston Road, Van Cortlandt Park’s easterly vistas seem as if they are at your fingertips.

But the one-bedroom, one-bath co-op, has a lot more going for it than distant views, light and air. Its private terrace, just off the living room, soaks up the morning sun.

Inside, it has nicely finished hardwood floors throughout and a large dining area adjacent to a well-appointed kitchen with tile flooring, a side-by-side refrigerator and built in cooktop and wall oven.

The bedroom has a walk-in closet as well as a double closet and unique arrangement of built-

in storage with louver doors surrounding double wide windows.

The building is well-known for its ameni-ties, including a courtyard garden, meeting and recreation rooms, a laundry room, a garage, a live-in superintendent and a porter. The manage-ment office is on site.

“The location is ideal,” says Irene Simon, of Prudential Douglas Elliman, “It’s convenient to Riverdale Neighborhood House, public, private and parochial schools, shopping on Mosholu Av-enue and Henry Hudson Parkway.”

Ms. Simon has listed the co-op for $140,000. Monthly maintenance is $826.

Simple tips for completing a DIY home project on time We are in the midst of a

do-it-yourself revolution, with more Americans pulling out the tool belt and getting their hands dirty. If you’d like to hop on the DIY bandwagon and enjoy the money savings and pride that comes with completing a project yourself, it’s important to keep some tips in mind so your grand ideas don’t become grand disasters.

The down economy has inspired many Americans to skip the pros and complete home improvement projects themselves - and this trend isn’t just for low- or middle-income families. Wealthy families are making an effort as well, with 70 percent of mass affluent Americans ($50,000 to $250,000 in total household investable assets) saying they took on home improvement projects in the last year, such as plumbing, painting and home cleaning, that they would normally hire someone else to do, according

to a 2012 Bank of America Mer-rill Edge Report.

No matter what your reason, from saving money to having complete control over the proj-ect, here are some important steps to follow so the job gets completed successfully.

Choose your project wisely

Depending on your level of skill and ambition, you may be able to complete a number of different projects around your home, adding value, comfort and style to your real estate investment. But choosing a project and researching it thor-oughly prior to starting is im-portant. While you may want to completely remodel your bathroom, do you have the skills necessary to do all the plumbing? Would it be better to give the room a facelift with some new hardware, linens

and a fresh coat of paint? Make sure you understand the entire scope of the project before you take it on with full force.

Get the right tools

While professionals have all the tools they need on hand, DIY homeowners will likely need to purchase some equip-ment to complete the job. While you’re likely to have the basics — hammer, screwdriver, nails, etc. — most projects require specific types of tools to get the job done correctly. For exam-ple, if you plan to upgrade your flooring, you can get all the tools you need while you pick up your supplies from Lumber Liquidators. From installation starter kits to mechanic gloves and floor nailers, you’ll find high-quality, professional-grade tools at a low cost. Some tools are a smart investment because they help throughout the instal-

lation process, and can be used time and time again for mainte-nance purposes. And in some cases, tools can be cheaper to own than to rent.

Make a budget and timeline

Two of the most common roadblocks that overly ambi-tious DIYers face are projects taking longer than expected and costing more than origi-nally intended. When you start a project, it’s important to set a realistic budget and stick to it. Too often homeowners be-gin to upgrade materials and make costly mistakes that add up quickly. Having a timeline is important also so your week-end project doesn’t turn into a month-long endeavor. While you need to be flexible (there are frequently unexpected de-lays when doing something on your own), it’s important to

have a timeframe for project completion. When a home proj-ect is finished on time and on budget, everyone is happy.

Educate yourself on the project steps

No matter what project you are considering, there is likely a multitude of free online vid-eos available to help you learn more about the proper mea-sures you need to take to get it done the right way. Visit You-Tube.com or simply perform a Google search. When you buy your supplies, talk with the associates at the store and get advice for your particular home. Educated employees, such as the ones who work at Lumber Liquidators, can help answer your questions and concerns, and guide you toward methods that will save time and headaches. Finally, you can always visit your local

library to find books and mag-azines that cover your topic of interest.

What’s cooking?

By Danielle [email protected]

Bulghur wheat is usually as-sociated with tabouli. A Middle Eastern staple, tabouli is a com-mon salad consisting of fresh herbs, cooked bulghur, lemon juice and olive oil. The first time I tried it, it was a soggy mess. What was this grain melange of watery cucumbers and pulver-ized tomatoes sitting in a sad cold liquid of vegetable juices?

You can see it now in your grocery aisle next to the hum-mus and babaganoush.

It was only later in life, in a small Druze town on Israel’s Mount Carmel, that tabouli changed its position in my culi-nary mental rolodex. We visited an unassuming small restaurant, one that looked like all the others along the village’s main artery. It was virtually empty but the cook and ba’al ha bayit(master of the house) knew our family friend and ushered us in.

They brought out countless plates of mezze, one of which was tabouli — real tabouli. The salad was mostly bright green, whole leaves with only a small amount of bulghur folded in. Each bite was pure earth; grassy parsley, peppery cilantro and just tender little grains of bul-ghur. It was then that I learned to appreciate this underused grain.

This September, I learned a new way to make it with cracked wheat. My aunt Amira graced our Rosh Hashanah table with seven kinds of salad and 10 main courses. My favorites ranged from a salad of julienned raw carrots and beets to Bamia, or baby okra, stewed with buttery soft pieces of beef shoulder.

The other highlight was this healthy salad of bulghur, pome-granate seeds, torn mint and walnuts. Tossed with just a little bit of olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper, this salad’s bright colors and crunchy texture make it a veritable feast for the eyes and senses.

AMIRA’S POMEGRANATE, BULGHUR AND MINT

SALAD*Serves 4.

The star ingredient in this recipe are the crunchy, tart pomegranate seeds. To seed a pomegranate, cut it in half, put on a makeshift bib and place a bowl in your sink. Using a mallet, knock the outside of the pome-granate over the bowl and watch the seeds fall. This method is a lot easier than trying to pry them out with your fingers, but the juices stain so beware.

2 Cups bulghur wheat, cooked

1-1/2 Cups pomegranate seeds

1/2 Cup mint leaves, loosely packed, and torn into small pieces

1 lemon freshly squeezed3 Tbsps. good quality olive

oilkosher salt and freshly

cracked black pepper to taste

1/2 Cup walnuts, toasted and coarsely chopped

Cook the bulghur wheat ac-cording to package directions. In a colander, rinse the bulghur under cold water. Strain well, making sure to remove any ex-cess water or starchy residue.

In a large, non-reactive bowl, combine 2 cups cooked bulghur and pomegranate seeds. Tear the mint into small pieces over

the bowl. Add the lemon juice, olive oil and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Toss gently to combine. Taste for seasoning and ad-just. Fold in the walnuts and transfer to a serving dish. Gar-nish with a small sprig of mint.

*Cook’s Note: This salad can be made up to one day ahead of time and stored in the refrigera-tor.

Fall for fruit: pomegranate, bulghur and mint salad

At the movies with James Delson

By James [email protected]

A New Leaf, writer/director Elaine May’s magnificent black comedy, has finally become available on DVD.

This 1971 cult favorite car-ries on the tradition of such classic offbeat romances as Arsenic and Old Lace, His Girl Friday and Groundhog Day.

Working from a script which blends gallows humor and May’s innovative sketch come-dy work with Mike Nichols and a surprising vision of romantic love, May assembled a dream cast for her first feature film.

With Walter Matthau and herself in the leads, she brought in such first-rate sec-ond bananas as Jack Weston, George Rose, James Coco, Do-ris Roberts, and Renee Taylor, as well as a host of other talents, to populate the privileged world of the central characters.

Matthau plays the ne’er-do-well Henry Graham, scion of an East Coast family of the Ameri-can aristocracy. The film begins with Graham’s startling discov-ery that he has spent his entire inheritance.

In order to avoid being reduced to a member of the disdained middle class, he is advised by his faithful butler (Rose) that his only hope for the continuation of his elabo-rately gilded existence is to marry a rich woman.

What Henry doesn’t men-tion to the butler or anyone else is that once he marries, he plans on murdering his wife and inheriting her money to continue his single, uncompli-cated, self-centered lifestyle.

As he is all but broke, Henry is obliged to borrow money from his despised uncle (Coco) at 1000 percent interest. With the loan due in six weeks, and only $50,000 to spend, Henry sets out to find a wife.

After a frustrating series of failed dates, he finally stumbles upon the perfect mate, Henri-etta Lowell (May). She’s a clue-less, unsophisticated, all-too trusting botanist with a massive fortune and no living relatives.

What follows is black come-dy at its darkest, as newlyweds Henry and Henrietta settle into life together.

She goes about her botani-cal research while he gets her overstaffed mansion in order while simultaneously plotting her doom.

Matthau, whose precise comic timing and extreme like-ability are on a par with Jack Benny and Groucho Marx, sus-tains the role of a loser with vil-lainous intentions who you just can’t bring yourself to hate.

Although his character fan-cies himself capable of doing in the missus, you know he’s just a schnook at heart, a would-be villain with a heart of gold.

And May, who begins the film as a clueless victim, emerg-es as a dream wife whose down-to-earth ways and unquestion-ing love transform her husband from a heartless misanthrope into an actual human being.

Matthau and May are a

great screen team, and their adventures here bear repeated viewings.

This is in large part due to May’s extraordinary writing abilities, as demonstrated in such other work as Warren Be-atty’s Heaven Can Wait, Mike Nichols’ The Bird Cage and Primary Colors, and for her own scripts for the underappreci-ated Ishtar and Mikey and Nicky (starring John Cassavetes and Peter Falk.)

It is a great shame that Elaine May only got the chance to direct four films. But at least we have the chance to see her at her best in A New Leaf.Running time: 102 minutes MPAA rating: G

Robot buddy offers new lease on life

Frank Langella, a power-house actor on stage, has rarely been given the opportunity to play a sympathetic lead in the movies. But in Robot & Frank he displays his polished come-dic and dramatic skills to great effect in a winning, touching, slightly futuristic comedy/drama.

Working with first-time di-rector Jake Schreier, Langella portrays Frank, an elderly for-mer cat burglar whose spirit is intact after serving two terms in prison.

Frank seems content to live out his life in a remote upstate New York cottage, although his mental faculties are gradually diminishing and his homemak-ing skills are less than stellar.

But his son, played with a nuanced mix of devotion and alienation by James Marsden (Enchanted, Straw Dogs), is unwilling to relegate the old jewel thief to a life of senility in the old age home without mak-ing an effort to bring him back from the precipice of dementia.

To this end, the son gives his dad a robot home health care aide. A compact, human-oid-shaped machine, the robot is the shut-in’s dream.

It cooks healthy meals, cleans the house, shops for food and household supplies, creates and tends its own gar-den, can carry on a decent con-versation, and generally takes care of its charge with all the consideration and patience of the best possible human nurse/companion/housekeeper/cook and bottle washer.

The old burglar is appalled at first, and refuses to be a co-operative patient. But once he finds that the robot has not been programmed to be an enforcer of civil laws, a com-promise is struck between man and machine which serves both of their purposes.

Frank will behave cordially, eat his no-salt, low fat, vegetar-ian meals, and sleep and awak-en on the robot’s programmed schedule, while the robot will learn the cat burglar’s trade.

The friendship which devel-

ops between Langella and the robot, voiced with a sweet me-tallic charm by Peter Saarsgard (Kinsey, An Education) grows into what must be the first meaningful relationship the old thief has had since the early years of his marriage.

It’s apparent that over the course of his life he alienated his ex-wife and children and was never an essential part of their lives.

Finding a friend so late in life revitalizes Frank and makes him more of a human being.

Instead of the irritable re-cluse plagued by dementia and ill-will, he begins to build rela-tionships with the local librar-ian, played by Susan Sarandon, and his daughter, played by Liv Tyler.

Through all of this, Lan-gella’s scenes with the robot are funny, quirky, warm and de-manding, as a suspension of dis-belief must be maintained while building a real relationship be-tween man and machine.

And working with Marsden, Sarandon and Tyler presents a different set of challenges. Lan-gella is convincing as a charac-ter who may be able to relate to a robot but who finds enormous difficulty in overcoming a life-time of selfish behavior towards flesh and blood characters.

In all of this, the script by Christopher D. Ford succeeds at finding a balance between the whimsical relationship between Frank and his robot, the chal-lenges of Frank’s downwardly spiraling mental acuity, and the old guy’s late in life attempts to overcome the emotional alien-ation from his family.

Ford’s screenplay doesn’t al-ways succeed at incorporating the intersecting plotlines. But his work must be applauded, as first-time screenwriters rarely find such success with such a complex story and characters.

And director Schreier must be congratulated as well for working with his actors to create one of this year’s most touching and insightful ensem-ble pieces. It will challenge you, amuse you and give you a fine night out at the movies.Running time: 90 minutesMPAA rating: PG-13 for some language
