The exhibit features two very different styles: Socialist realism pieces permit- ted by the Soviet Union, often lovely paintings of the Kremlin or other Sovi- et landmarks, and art created by dissi- dents, later known as nonconformists. One of the central figures of the non- conformist movement, as well as a cen- tral artist to this exhibit, Oscar Rabin, organized an exhibit of unofficial art in 1974. Within hours of opening, So- viet authorities razed the exhibit with bulldozers and water cannons. Artists, journalists and bystanders were ar- rested. Some were injured, and many works of art were destroyed. Mr. Rabin was later exiled by the Soviet Union to France, but he was able to show his art in Western Europe. Almost all of the work in the exhibit was acquired by the Hebrew Home’s art collection from London’s Gros- venor Gallery, which was founded in 1960 by Eric Estorick and his wife Salome. The Grosvenor was a hot spot for under-the-radar Eastern Eu- ropean artists to display their work. Mr. Rabin’s first solo show was at Grosve- nor in 1965, and one of those paintings, “Bread and Factory,” is being shown. Jacob Reingold, the home’s previous execu- tive director, met Mr. Es- torick through a family friend and started buy- ing up art by Eastern Europeans. “So we ended up with all of these amaz- ing works and just in the last two years, they had sort of been hanging all around the home,” As- sistant Curator Emily O’Leary said. “Due to the way we transferred over our database in the 90s, a lot of the information about the artist and who they were had been lost.” For the last two years, Ms. O’Lear y has tracked down the names and titles of the art. Sometimes, titles or artist names written in Cyrillic script on the backs of paintings. Other times, Ms. O’Leary translated titles from Russian, Czech, Hungarian and Al- banian into English with the help of Russian-speaking high school student, Riverdalian Anna Tarasova. Ms. O’Leary’s favorite part of the show is the work by Czechoslovakian artist Richard Fremund, a member of May 57, a group of artists who re- jected the Soviet Union’s restrictions on art. One of the few mentions of Mr. Fre- mund in the history of art is in a 1956 New York Times article, “Prague Art Show Scorns ‘Realism.’” “Without permission of any kind, 28-year-old Richard Fremund opened an exhibition Tuesday night in the only Prague gallery not controlled by the Ministry of Culture. His ninety paint- ings and drawings include bosomy nudes, abstracts and, in fact, a bit of ev- erything except ‘Socialist realism,’ the only approved style of painting in Com- munist lands,” read The Times. Four of Mr. Fremund’s oil paint- ings are included in the exhibit, each a brightly-colored abstract depiction of a Czech townscape. “This was the type of art being cre- ated at the time, that to this day, the West is relatively unexposed to,” Ms. O’Leary said. Under the Iron Curtain: Modern Art from the Soviet Bloc, will be shown at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale’s Der- fner Judaica Museum and the Elma and Milton A. Some of the art was rebellious enough to face the bulldozer. Other work was nonconform-ist enough to be left alone.

Under the Iron Curtain: Modern Art from the Soviet Bloc, being shown at Hebrew Home’s Derfner Judaica Museum features artists working in the Soviet Union or one of its satel-lite states in the 1950s and 1960s. The exhibit features two very different styles: Socialist realism pieces permit-ted by the Soviet Union, often lovely paintings of the Kremlin or other Sovi-et landmarks, and art created by dissi-dents, later known as nonconformists.

One of the central figures of the non-conformist movement, as well as a cen-tral artist to this exhibit, Oscar Rabin, organized an exhibit of unofficial art in 1974. Within hours of opening, So-viet authorities razed the exhibit with bulldozers and water cannons. Artists, journalists and bystanders were ar-rested. Some were injured, and many works of art were destroyed. Mr. Rabin was later exiled by the Soviet Union to France, but he was able to show his art in Western Europe.

Almost all of the work in the exhibit was acquired by the Hebrew Home’s art collection from London’s Gros-venor Gallery, which was founded in 1960 by Eric Estorick and his wife Salome. The Grosvenor was a hot spot for under-the-radar Eastern Eu-ropean artists to display their work.

Mr. Rabin’s first solo show was at Grosve-nor in 1965, and one of those paintings, “Bread and Factory,” is being shown.

Jacob Reingold, the home’s previous execu-tive director, met Mr. Es-torick through a family friend and started buy-ing up art by Eastern Europeans.

“So we ended up with all of these amaz-ing works and just in the last two years, they had sort of been hanging all around the home,” As-sistant Curator Emily O’Leary said. “Due to the way we transferred

over our database in the 90s, a lot of the information about the artist and who they were had been lost.”

For the last two years, Ms. O’Leary has tracked down the names and titles of the art. Sometimes, titles or artist names written in Cyrillic script on the backs of paintings. Other times, Ms. O’Leary translated titles from Russian, Czech, Hungarian and Al-banian into English with the help of Russian-speaking high school student, Riverdalian Anna Tarasova.

Ms. O’Leary’s favorite part of the show is the work by Czechoslovakian artist Richard Fremund, a member of May 57, a group of artists who re-jected the Soviet Union’s restrictions on art.

One of the few mentions of Mr. Fre-mund in the history of art is in a 1956 New York Times article, “Prague Art Show Scorns ‘Realism.’”

Home of the weekTerhi Edwards & Kathy Murray, Douglas Elliman Real Estate

Two bedrooms for the price of one

E nter the co-op at 3635 Johnson Ave. and be greeted by a gra-cious and sizeable foyer that is as welcoming as a warm hug.

This prewar two-bedroom, one-bath-room co-op is a converted Junior-4, giving its owners two bedrooms for the price of one. It is also located on the top floor of the building, so it offers optimal light and pin-drop silence.

The foyer leads to a large dining area and to a cozy sunken living room, encir-cled by crown molding.

The spacious kitchen is renovated and boasts a southern exposure. There are granite countertops and large floor tiles. The bathroom is also windowed.

Tucked away from the communal space is the oversized master bedroom. It is illu-minated by large windows that face south and east. The second bedroom is idyllic as a guest room, home office or nursery.

The co-op offers tons of closet space, including one walk-in closet.

The building couldn’t be any better situated. It’s located on Johnson Avenue, close to an array of restaurants and shops, as well as buses to Manhattan and to local subways.

The well-maintained building includes an elevator, laundry room and live-in su-per. Sorry, no pets permitted.

Terhi Edwards & Kathy Murray have listed the property at $200,000.

Clockwise from top:

The kitchen has wood cabinets and granite countertops.

An oversized living room leaves lots of possibilities.

Hardwood floors highlight every room in the apartment.

Light floods into one of the apartment’s two bedrooms.

On October 16, 2012, the US District Court in the Southern District of New York entered an order with consent of the parties resolving a discrimination lawsuit brought by the United States against the own-er, management company, and superintendent of the rental apartment building at 3800 Independence Avenue in Riverdale, Bronx, New York. Persons who believe that they may have a valid claim of racial discrimination at this location are invited to contact the United States Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York, before April 14, 2013 at 212-637-2697.
