Frank Rosner of Hoboken plays all three roles in UNCLE PHILIP’S COAT

Frank Rosner plays all three roles in the upcoming production of Uncle Philip’s Coat in Hoboken

THREE MEN AND A COAT

By Sally Deering

You wouldn’t think a play about a coat could be captivating enough to hold your attention, but with actor Frank Rosner and director Minna Packer, UNCLE PHILIP’S COAT is in good hands. Presented at the Hudson School’s per-formance space in Hoboken from Dec. 19-21, UNCLE PHILIP’S COAT author Matty Selman based it on his grand-uncle whom he remembers as the ‘King of Coney Island’ who would stand on the boardwalk, play the kazoo and sell bras to women from his suit-case. “My grand-uncle Philip on my mother’s side is described in my play, a

“luftmensch” – someone who lives on air with his head in the clouds and his feet in the sewers,” Sel-man says. “If he were alive today, he would probably be cast off as a near home-less person, but to me, as a child, he loomed like the King of Coney Island. He would visit us (always around dinner time!) and set out his wares on our coffee table, taking unbe-lievable amounts of candy, cigars, yo-yos, bras, pens and fly swatters out of his voluminous coat pockets.” Selman had a special relationship with my uncle, he says, which is evident in the play. “I cared for him,” Sel-man says. “I used to pick him up – literally from the

THREE MEN AND A COATCont’d form page 2streets, bring him to my apartment, feed him, buy him clean clothes and listen to his stories. Stories that made me laugh and cry. As in the play, he survived a Russian pogrom and saw things as a child that remained in him until he died. In refl ecting on the play and on the metaphor of this coat – this garment of dreamers, I am brought once again, to the melt-ing pot that comprises the faces, stories, the heart of what we are as a country. Everyone has an Uncle Philip. Everyone knows a dreamer. And there is greatvalue in those lives on the

fringe, who fi nd it hard to survive beyond their dreams.” In Packer’s produc-tion, of UNCLE PHILIP’S COAT, Rosner, an accom-plished actor who resides in Hoboken and has per-formed in theater both here and in New York, brings insight, compassion and humor to the roles of Uncle Philip; his brother and nephew. It’s a tour-de-force performance and one that Rosner has been exploring during the two years he’s worked on the piece withPacker. “The uncle has died and left the coat to his nephew,”Rosner says. “The coat

APPROPRIATION cont’d from page 4 Liz Cohen says, “For years I have been fascinated by the art forms of the indigenous people of the earth, in par-ticular, the Aboriginal people of Australia amongst whom I lived and worked for many years. The colors and symbol system I have created in my works are directly infl uenced by the art of the Aboriginal culture and other traditional artists I have met in Cen-tral and South America, the Caribbean, and Ghana and Nigeria.” Ibou Ndoye states, “I am a storyteller who uses the visual imagery of my life in Senegal and my new life in America to share the idea that art is universal and thatart is for everyone.

Maxwell’s TavernStill Hip after All These Years

By Sally Deering Like Sinatra, Maxwell’s Tavern is synonymous with Hoboken and goes back to the 1940s when the city was more working class and employees at the Max-well House coffee plant would stop in for a brew and a bite. Although the bar looks very much like it did back in the day, General Manager Jay Donnelly says new changes came with the new owners back in March. You can now enter right on Washington Street (instead of using the side door on 11th) and there’s some beautiful art work through-out the bar area that fl ows all the way through to

the back room where bands and other acts perform. The menu has changed, too. The bar area, with Max-well’s original bar, features high-top tables and chairs; intimate seating along the perimeter and a back room with four-tops facing a small stage. Along with the bands and extensive beer and wine selection, Maxwell’s offers a menu that’s bar-friendly with an array of Starters, Salads, Burgers,

Sandwiches, Thin Crust Pizzas, and Entrees. For Starters, Maxwell’s signa-ture Classic French Onion Soup continues to be a menu highlight along with Buffalo Chicken Wings, Fried Calamari, Mom’s Italian Style Meatballs and Crab Cake Sliders ($7-$13). Thin Crust Pizzas, also a big draw, are served in several variations including White, Margherita, Chicken Pesto, Hoboken BBQ and Sausage Lasagna ($14-$15). Burgers are Bleu, Black Bean, Turkey, and Tra-ditional – all served with fries or chips ($11-$14). Sandwiches are the Grilled Chicken, Pulled Pork and Philly Cheesesteak ($11-$13). Entrees feature Shepherd’s Pie, Chicken Parmigiana, Vegetable La-sagna, Chicken Carbonara, Blackened Salmon, Grilled French Cut Pork Chop, and Grilled Angus Cowboy Steak ($16-$32). Although there are several TVs in the bar area, Donnelly says the owners are trying to go back to Maxwell’s roots. “We’re trying not to be too much of a sports bar,” Donnelly says. “Originally it was Maxwell’s Tavern. When Maxwell’s had the plant down the street, they

worked three shifts and the workers would come here. We wanted to bring it back to a tavern with a good dining experience: good quality food at a reasonable price.” Back in the day, Max-well’s was known for serving comfort foods like meat loaf, fried chicken and chicken pot pies. These days, there are several signature dishes customers keep coming back for,

Donnelly says, including the 14-ounce Premium Reserve pork chop entrée, the French onion soup, thin crust pizzas and Buf-falo wings. There are daily specials, too. Half-price Happy Hour happens Mon-Fri from 5-7 pm, and Sun, 6 pm till closing (bar area only). On Thursdays, the bar serves $5 Martinis; on Sundays, its 50 cent wings and $3 Miller Lites or PBR Drafts. Since the bar is just a block or so from Steven’s Institute of Technology, Maxwell’s offers SIT students 25% off their food orders with

Cont’d from page 17 a school ID (drinks not included). Art is everywhere at Maxwell’s with exhibi-tions curated by local artist Steven Vizena. The current exhibit is “Body Mind-Spirit” and Vizena says it explores “artists imaginings or aspects of experience that move beyond physical constraints.” Artist Ibou Ndoye of Jersey City is one of sev-eral artists whose works can be seen on Maxwell’s walls. About his art, Ndoye says: “My message is social in the sense that it deals with the social and moral

ethics of modern and tradi-tional life. My inspirations come from the unseen, ne-glected, or discarded things from our social and daily life. The traditions of my homeland, Senegal, have a great impact on my work and storytelling through my art.” Bands will always be a huge highlight at Max-well’s. Performing Fri, Dec. 12 at 9:30 pm is the Eric R. Durham & Top Groove Band. (Admission $10). at Holiday Parties

(BPT)If you’re throwing a party for the first time or you’re continuing a long-running annual tradition, hosting a festive celebra-tion with friends and family is a lot of work and always worth it. Consider these five

entertaining secrets that expert party planners use to throw unforgettable holiday parties for less:ThemesSet the stage and get ev-eryone in a festive mood with a great theme. A bit of brainstorming is all you need to figure out the best theme for your celebration. From an outdoor autumn harvest to a New Year’s masquerade, the sky’s the limit. Example: Favorite holiday

movie theme.FoodWhether you’re serving appetizers or planning a full-out feast, food is a party essential. Enhance your food service by rent-ing everything you need for an impressive presenta-tion. 5 Affordable Entertaining Ideas Guaranteed to Impress at Holiday Parties

Cont’d from page 20 No great holiday party is complete without enter-tainment. Let music set the mood by creating a cus-tom playlist. Then amplify those tunes by renting a professional sound system and dance floor to watch guests move and grove. For movie-themed parties, con-sider renting a projector so guests can view the flick in style! Finally, casino or car-nival games are sure way to get everyone involved in the festivities and provide fun for all ages.DecorYou may already have some decor to use at your holiday-themed party, but

to really impress this year, consider fresh ideas for stunning and unexpected decorations. If you prefer the DIY route, visit sites like Pinterest for ideas on how to create beautiful decor. If you’re short on time or simply aren’t crafty, you can rent table linens, runners and centerpieces. Visit www.RentalHQ.com to learn more about afford-able holiday decor rental options. When deciding on decor, don’t forget about the importance of lighting. Not only do the right lights create the ideal ambience, they also provide an ele-ment of safety and brighten up dark spaces so guests

have more room to mingle.Extras The extra touches – big and small – are what truly spice up a party and give it that professionally planned feel. Small additions like coat racks eliminate the pile of coats and purses, keep-ing rooms neat and tidy. Extra chairs ensure guests are comfortable whether they are visiting, eating or drinking. For a truly fes-tive celebration, rent a bar and set up a drink station with all the barware needed to really impress guests. If you’re having a big party, don’t pack into your house – rent a tent and heaters if

necessary and let the good times roll!
