HOWARD CITY The village councilof the Village of Howard City has elimi-nated zoning permit fees in the spirit ofeconomic development.

At a regular meeting on Aug. 8, thecouncil discussed its zoning permit feeschedule, which was established in 2005.It was the consensus of the council toeliminate zoning permit fees in order to

encourage growth and maintenance with-in the community.

Our goal is to reduce the overall redtape and cost associated with growing a business, building a home or maintain-ing ones property, said S. Michael Scott, village president. We continue to growin a positive direction and we want to doeverything in our power to support that

growth. The Village of Howard City continues

to be one of the fastest growing munici-palities in Montcalm County and has tak-en proactive steps to streamline its plan-ning commission and approval process. In 2010, the village council amended thesite plan review process to place the nalapproval of commercial businesses in the

hands of its appointed Planning Commis-sion.

We wanted to take the politics out ofthe approval process and provide a busi-ness friendly environment, noted Scott,we welcome positive change and whenwe nd an ordinance that doesnt work, we improve it to stay current with thetimes.

FREMONT Tamarac, a Mem- ber of Spectrum Health, announcedrecently the launch of a revolutionarynew group training program integrat-ing suspension training bodyweightexercise.

Tamarac is the latest wellness cen-

ter to adopt TRX Suspension Training,a method of functional training thatdevelops strength, balance, exibilityand core stability simultaneously. Itrequires the use of the TRX Suspen-sion Trainer, a highly portable per-formance training tool that leveragesgravity and the users body weight toenable hundreds of exercises for everytness goal. Created by Randy Hetrick,CEO of Fitness Anywhere and formerNavy SEAL, the TRX was an inventionof necessity for Hetrick and his SEALteammates to maintain peak physicalreadiness while deployed in the eld.The TRX has evolved into the idealtraining tool for Tamarac instructorsto guide participants through body-

weight exercises to deliver a fun andchallenging total-body workout.

Suspension Training bodyweightexercise allow users to self-adjustthe amount of resistance they want, making it suitable for people of all t-ness levels by making small changesin foot, hand or body position; thiscapability empowers participants to

    continue with training, even when

fatigue sets in. This versatility makesthe TRX attractive to so many users, including elite athletes in every ma-jor sports league, all branches of themilitary, and tness enthusiasts at alllevels.

Were very excited to bring TRXSuspension Training to our facilityand feel that it is a great way to differ-entiate ourselves from other wellnesscenters, said Gretchen Bush, tnessmanager. Integrating TRX trainingalso allows us to maximize our spaceso we can provide more value to ourcitizens.

TRX training appeals equally tomen and women of all tness levels because users can precisely control

how challenging they want each exer-cise to be, said Randy Hetrick, CEOof Fitness Anywhere. I know how to-days fast-paced lifestyle often makesit difcult to t in a quality workout. With Suspension Training, you canget a fun, effective total body workoutin 25 minutes. This makes it mucheasier for people to incorporate t-

    ness into their daily lives.

Since its introduction to the mar-ketplace in 2005, TRX SuspensionTraining has proven to be the idealsolution for personal, small and largegroup functional training and has been rolled out in top gyms acrossthe country, including Crunch, NewYork Sports Clubs, and Equinox. It isused and trusted by trainers, athletes, physical therapists, and all branchesof the military. Its popularity withprofessional athletes and team train-ing rooms is exploding across the NFL,NBA, MLB, NHL, UFC and NCAA.The performance training commu-nity, including world class condition-ing coaches such as Todd Durkin andMark Verstegen, and elite personal

trainers like Gunnar Petersen andBob Harper are embracing Suspen-sion Training bodyweight exercise asa tried and true tness method appro-priate for all tness levels.

For more information on TRXSuspension Training classes, visit www.tamaracwellness.org or contactGretchen Bush at (231) 924-1781.

    Splashdown kicks offin Stanton

STANTON Several Stanton pastors announce Splash-down, Central Montcalms newest childrens program forsecond, third and fourth graders. Other elementary childrenare also welcome if they have a qualifying sibling.

Technically, Splashdown is neither a day care, nor an

ofcial after-school program. Its an afternoon Christianeducation program where, for a small fee, children can go between the time school is dismissed and 6 p.m. It picksup where school leaves off offering life skills training, adultmentors, homework assistance and Bible training.

This daily program is similar in design to other kindsof faith-community sponsored kids programs, said JameyNichols, pastor of Stantons First Congregational Churchwhere the program is held. A handful of Stanton churcheshave cooperated for several years now on projects like thisone. Our hope is to meet yet another need in the communityby offering latchkey children a safe, biblically-based, learn-

ing environment. For more information or to register your child, call thechurch ofce at (989) 831-5240 or visit fccstanton.org.

Since making their debut in1946, baby boomers have cre-ated tremendous social changein the United States, with theirepic numbers and independentspirit impacting everythingfrom politics to pop culture, transforming the makeup ofthe American family and work-

force, and ushering in a newwave of consumerism and soci-etal norms. As the rst boomersturn 65 this year, the generationwill once again make history.

At a rate of 10,000 a day,or one every eight seconds, boomers are becoming eligiblefor Medicare, marking the be-ginning of the largest membersurge since the programs in-ception and creating an evengreater need for Medicare edu-cation for rst-time enrollees.

Those new to the programmay feel overwhelmed by theprocess of sorting through theiroptions for Medicare cover-age, but resources are avail-able to help boomers navigatethe Medicare maze, notes TomPaul, chief executive ofcer ofUnitedHealthcare Medicare &Retirement.

It is critical that boomers, and everyone eligible for Medi-care, take the time to educatethemselves on all available cov-erage options in order to make acondent health care decision, said Paul. As a generationthats been the target of mar-

keting campaigns since child-hood, boomers are known for being savvy consumers. Theyshould put those skills to use asthey shop for Medicare cover-age that will meet their healthneeds and also t in their bud-get.

The rst step to being asmart Medicare shopper is tounderstand the programs four

main parts, or the ABCs ofMedicare:n Part A helps pay for inpa-

tient care in hospitals, skillednursing facilities or hospice andfor home health care if certainconditions are met.n Part B helps pay for medi-

cally necessary outpatient ser-vices such as doctor visits. Part A and Part B together are re-

ferred to as Original Medicare.n Part C is also known as

Medicare Advantage. Theseplans are offered by private in-surers, such as UnitedHealth-care, and are approved byMedicare to provide all Part Aand Part B services. These plansoften include prescription drugcoverage and other additionalbenets.

n Part D plans are offereby private insurers and providcoverage of both brand-namand generic prescription drugs.

Once theyve mastered th basic structure of Medicare boomers should ask a few kequestions to help lead theto the coverage thats right fothem:n What medications do yo

    currently take?

n Are you open to switchindoctors, hospitals or pharma-cies based on a Medicare Ad-vantage and/or a Part D plansnetwork?n Do you want coverage o

additional services such as vi-sion or dental care?nHow much are you willin

or able to pay out of your owpocket? Are you willing to paymonthly premium if other out-of-pocket expenses, such as co-pays when you need to visitdoctor, are lower?n If you enroll in Origina

Medicare, do you want a Medi-

care supplement plan, some-times called a Medigap plan, tohelp cover the costs that Origi-nal Medicare doesnt cover?

Most adults can apply foMedicare during an InitiaEnrollment Period that be-gins three months before thmonth of their 65th birthdaand ends three months follow-ing the month of their birthday All Medicare beneciaries camake changes to their coveragduring the Annual Election Pe-riod from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

The numbers alone are stag-gering. Each year in the U.S.,8 million pets end up in shel-ters, and of these, only half ndnew homes. Approximately11,000 pets a day, or 4 millioneach year, are euthanized, eventhough most of them are adopt-

    able.Despite these overwhelming

statistics, ending pet homeless-ness is an achievable goal andeveryone can be part of the so-lution. People Saving Pets, anew social movement created by PetSmart Charities, is dedi-cated to saving homeless petsand suggests ve simple actionsthat anyone can taketoday to save lives.

AdoptIf you have the time and re-

sources to care for a pet, choose

to adopt instead of buying yourpet from a breeder or pet store.Have your heart set on a partic-ular breed? Nearly 25 percentof animals living in shelters arepurebreds, and many rescuegroups are dedicated to specicbreeds.

    SpAy And

    neuterIf youre already planning

to adopt or currently own a pet, have your pet spayed/neutered.Its one of the best ways to re-

duce overcrowding in sheltersand lower euthanasia rates, yet

35 percent of the cats and dogsliving in U.S. households havenot had this simple and safeprocedure. Cats and dogs canbe spayed/neutered as early as

8 weeks old, and studies have

shown that the procedure canprovide signicant health ben-ets and reduce behavioralproblems.

    Furthermore, price doesnt

have to keep you from doing

the right thing for your pet.Certain clinics will provide you with spay/neuter services at areduced cost sometimes evenfor free. To nd one nearby,

    check out the People Saving

Pets clinic locator tool at www.peoplesavingpets.org.

    VolunteerCant welcome a new pet

into your family just yet? Volun-teer at your local shelter! Fromproviding playtime for pets tohelping out at adoption eventsor becoming a foster pet parent, your time will make a huge dif-ference in saving pets.

    donAteShelters rely heavily on do-

nations. A small gift can go along way. If you cant donatemoney, household items such ascleaning products, garbage bagsand old blankets and towels arealso welcome.

    ShArePerhaps the easiest way

to help save homeless pets isto spread the word. Let yourfriends, family and co-workersknow that youre passionateabout helping animals and howthey can be part of the solution.Use social media like Facebookand Twitter to share informa-tion and opportunities to helppets with your networks.

At www.peoplesavingpetsorg, you can nd tools and re-sources to help save pets lives, such as an adoptable pet loca-tor and a low-cost spay/neuterclinic locator, and nd opportu-nities to volunteer and donateto local animal welfare organi-zations.

Simple acts can save homeless pets lives
