    NORTH AMERICANPRECIS SYNDICATE

Moms-to-be have enough to worryabout preparing for their new arrival with-out worrying about whether their baby isgoing to be born too soon. But premature

birth is something that all pregnant wom-en need to be aware of because it can hap-pen to anyone.

A premature baby is born every min-ute in the United States. Preemies oftenface long hospitalizations and may sufferdevelopmental delays or lifelong disabili-ties. Prematurity is also the No. 1 cause ofinfant death. Its a difcult puzzle to solve,

but researchers are nally putting some ofthe pieces together.

Two critical pieces are the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus, andprogesterone, a naturally occurring hor-mone.

During pregnancy, the cervix natural-ly shortens (effaces) and opens (dilates)as delivery nears. Sometimes the cervixstarts shortening too soon, as early asthe second trimester. Although this onlyhappens to about 10 percent of pregnant

women, they are six times more likely tohave a premature birth.

Measuring cervical length mid-preg-nancy will reassure women with a normalcervix. For those who learn their cervixis shortening, a cervical length measure-ment is the key to getting preventivetreatment.

If a pregnant womans cervix shortenstoo soon, she and her baby are at high risk

of an early delivery that may have tragicconsequences, said Jason K. Baxter,M.D., MSCP, FACOG, a high-risk preg-nancy physician and an author of ground-

breaking research on progesterone andprematurity prevention. Treatment with

vaginal progesterone gel started mid-pregnancy for women with a short cervixhelps reduce premature birth so that moremoms can have healthy babies.

Experts say that cervical length mea-surements are critical for all pregnant

women. There are two ways to measurecervical length reliably: transvaginal ul-trasound and a new device called Cer-

    viLenz.Transvaginal ultrasound uses a probe

that is inserted into the vagina to createa digital image of the cervix. This proce-dure usually requires an extra prenatalappointment as there is a need for high-tech equipment and specially trained ex-aminers.

CerviLenz is a disposable device used

with a speculum. With CerviLenz, itseasy for obstetricians and midwives tomeasure cervical length during regularprenatal visits.

Expectant mothers should speak withtheir health care providers about havingtheir cervical length measured at leasttwice during the second trimester of theirpregnancy to nd out if they are at highrisk of premature birth and need treat-ment. Visit www.measure2besure.comfor more information.

HELP: Being different from someone isnt a bad thing. There are lots of things we can learn from others that may enlighten our own lives. (Courtesy Photo/Mon-key Business-Fotolia.com)

(StatePoint) The world is changing and parents need

to make sure their children are prepared to succeed in anincreasingly globalized economy, say experts.

The United States is often regarded as a melting pot, aplace for people of different backgrounds to come togetherand ultimately grow alike. But the truth is that from lan-guage to food to religious practice, unique cultural tradi-tions are all around us.

We must not try to erase differences but rather respectthem, even celebrate them, says Rajiv Malhotra, authorof the new book, Being Different: An Indian Challengeto Western Universalism (HarperCollins Publishers).Malhotra believes we can look to India as an example ofa distinct society that peacefully integrates many diversepeople.

Alongside reading, writing and arithmetic, culturaldiversity should be at the forefront of your childrens les-son plan. But dont just encourage tolerance. Go a stepfurther.

Tolerance is a patronizing posture, says Malhotra,

We need to learn to respect, even appreciate and not

merely tolerate religious and cultural differences.

Here are some tips to teach children to respect one an-other as they become citizens of the world:

nAbsorbing the nuances of a second language is easi-est when one is young, so sign your kids up for a languageclass at an early age. Better yet, learn along with them.

nPack your bags and take a trip. Dust off your pass-port or keep it domestic. Even within the United States, there is great opportunity to be exposed to new culturalexperiences.

n Think differently. There are fundamental differ-ences between the Western worldview and the Eastern

worldview, say scholars. People from different countrieshave different traditions, religious customs and historiesthat shape their thinking. Being accepting of others meansopening your mind to the idea that there are different ap-proaches to resolving the problems impacting our com-plex world.

nRead a book. You dont need to be a globetrotter tolearn about other cultures. Your local librarian can help

you nd age-appropriate books that will introduce chil-

dren to other cultures and allow them to explore them

deeply. For example, India has a rich history and culturethat goes beyond the Western embrace of spicy foods, yogaand meditation.

nEncourage friendships. Enroll your children in ac-tivities, camps and programs that foster relationships withkids of all religious, racial and economic backgrounds.

nEngage in a substantive dialogue with others that ex-plores new ideas about the world beyond your backyard.Question your values and be open to seeing the meritin the ideas of others, suggests Malhotra, who foundedthe Innity Foundation to encourage better East-Westrelations. For more information about his new book visit

www.beingdifferentbook.com.nHost a potluck. Invite your friends over and have

them bring dishes featuring their family recipes. You maynd your circle of friends is more culturally diverse than

you thought!By investing the time to teach these lessons, you can

contribute toward making schools and communities a

    safer place for your kids.

With all the social activitiesthat accompany the holiay sea-son it is particlarly important toclosely check the identication ofanyone who is purchasing or con-suming alcohol. With older sib-lings home from college or visitingfamily get-togethers it is tempting

for a younger person to try andse someone elses Id or to askan of-age friend or family mem-

ber to prchase alcohol on theirbehalf. To curb the dangers asso-ciated with underage and exces-sive drinking the Michigan LiquorControl Commission offers retail-ers the following tips:

nAlways check the identica-tion (Id) of a person who appearsless than 21 years ol. The se offalse Id is a serios problem forretail licensees an their employ-ees. Minors attempting to pur-chase alcoholic beverages some-times use altered, counterfeit, orsomeone elses Id. Yo may beable to eter the se of false Id by

informing minors that under MCL436.1703(2) an attempt to pr-chase liquor by using false ID is amisemeanor an is pnishable

    by imprisonment p to 93 aysand/or a ne of up to $100.

n Examine the Id closely. Al-terations in river licenses or Idcars can often be etecte witha ashlight. Smudges, alterationsand misalignments of seals is ap-parent an cars isse after Jne1987 also have a watermark stylecoating that is high gloss and moredifcult to alter. Can the personanswer qestions base on thedetails of the ID, such as addressor the birth ate? Whats the cor-rect spelling of your middle name?

What street aress is shown on

yor Id? Whats yor zip coe forthe aress shown?

n There are two types ofMichigan driver licenses currentlyin se. Some people may renewthese by mail (receiving a valida-tion sticker), so both of these types

will stay in se for several years.

To view examples of the licensescurrently issued in Michigan visitor Retail Gie on or website.

nIf an uner 21 applicantobtains a new or plicate licensesix months in advance of his/her21st birthday, the license will havethe Under 21 designation allages should be veried by checkingthe ate of birth. A d at the enof the number in the lower rightcorner inicates that the license orId car is a duPLICATE.

nMake sure the photo, heightan eye color match the person infront of you, if any do not matchask for a secon piece of Id. People

with fake Ids rarely carry back-pidentication.

We want retailers, parents, friends, and relatives to know thatif they have any obt abot the

valiity of someones Id or anydoubt about the persons age theyhave the right to refuse to serve orsell alcohol to them. The loss ofone legitimate sale is signicantlyless than the cost of a liqor vio-lation both in the short term anlong term operation of your busi-ness, family, and friendships, said Andy Deloney, Chairmanof the Michigan Liquor ControlCommission.

    December 12, 2011

Over the last few months, we have continued to see the support of our community and the desire to seeour students be successful. In support of this, we will be providing updates (via the TC School News, ourTC website, and/or the River Valley Shopper) regarding district and state initiatives that may affect you oryour child. The update below reflects how the changes in MEAP and MME cut scores enacted by the State ofMichigan will affect our district, schools, and students.

The State of Michigan uses all third through ninth grade student MEAP and MME test results to partiallymeasure the success of our students, schools, and district, as well as how the State of Michigan is performingcompared to other states. In recent years, Michigan students have shown higher proficiency rates on state teststhan most other states. Research has uncovered that Michigan set the proficiency bar much lower than mostother states, and far below what is considered college readiness. Recognizing this, the State has made drasticchanges to the cut score levels and these changes will affect student, school, and district scores this year.

What does this mean for Tri County? The new cut scores are going to show a very large drop in the numberof students considered proficient or advanced. You can see from the graph provided how the new cut scoreswill change the percent proficient dramatically, and in some cases, going from 96 percent proficient to 37percent. Please be aware of these changes as you receive your students scores this spring.

We are committed to helping every child achieve their best future, helping all children grow academically each year, and making Tri County

a leader in educational excellence. In order to reach this goal, we are reviewing and building our curriculum to meet these new and challengingdemands of college and career readiness. Thank you again for your support and dedication to Tri County Schools.Allen Cumings, SuperintendentFor more information about the changes to Michigans cut scores, please visit:http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/New_Cut_Scores_FAQ_365040_7.pdf

Drew Thompson is student teaching at SandLake Elementary in the fifth grade. He will graduatefrom Ferris State University this month. Hesteaching math, language arts, and social studies. He has worked at a number of schools including;Oakridge Elementary, Stanwood Elementary, andEastwood Elementary.

The biggest aspect of why I wanted to be aneducator was to reach all students at their differentlevels. I also have quite a few family members thatare teachers, which has drawn me to the field ofeducation, said Drew, who also enjoys coachingsports and being outdoors.

Tri County High School is instituting a call systemto inform parents when their son or daughter hasan unexcused absence. The call will take place atapproximately 5:00 p.m. each day the student has notbeen excused with either a phone call or a note. Once theparent receives the phone call, they will have 24 hours toproperly excuse their son or daughter. This can be doneby calling the school office at 231.937.4338 ext. 120, atanytime or sending in a note with your student the next

day.In order for this communication to be effective, it is very

important the high school has correct contact informationon file. Please verify that we have the correct informationvia the parent portal or calling the office at 231.937.4338if you do not have internet access.

If you are unfamiliar with the parent portal, this isan excellent tool for parents to monitor their studentsprogress via the internet. Parents have access to theirchilds grades, attendance, and disciplinary referrals 24/7.Please go to www.tricountyschools.com and click on theicon that says Parent Portal. Enter your user name andpassword (see below) in the area provided. Contact thehigh school if you dont have a user name and password.

First graders at MacNaughton Elementary have been learning about Pilgrims,Native Americans, and how the tradition of Thanksgiving began long ago. On Tuesday,November 22, 175 first grade students joined together as Pilgrims and Indiansto enjoy a Thanksgiving Breakfeast. Some students wore Pilgrim hats and bonnetswhile others donned Indian headbands and vests, which students had constructedprior to the event. The children had a wonderful time visiting with friends andfeasting together. After eating, the students sang a few fun turkey songs together,

which they had been rehearsingin their classrooms during the days leading up to the greatBreakfeast. Principal Goheen even joined in the fun, wearing a silly turkey hat and doing the turkey strut alongwith the students.

On Monday, November 28, all first grade students joinedtogether again to kick off the start of the Christmas season. They sat together in the gym and listened to their teachers readaloud The Night Before Christmas. Students are decoratingsugarplums as a take-home family project, and their creationswill adorn the first-grade hallway at school. The teachers areplanning to teach reading comprehension strategies, as wellas writing, math, and science concepts using the themes ofsugarplums, gingerbread men, and reindeer. Learning in firstgrade is fun!

No, we didnt fill our plates with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, or pie. We filledour plates with pinecones and needles, leaves, stones, sticks, nuts, and milkweedseeds. Mrs. Deweys class went on a naturecollection walk and used their collectionsto create art. Based on the artist, AndyGoldsworthys structures, we used spirals, arches, and curved lines, to create designsand structures on paper plates. We put ourplates outdoors, underneath our classroomwindow, so we can observe how the weatherchanges our art through the seasons.
