Im a miracle. I should not be doing what Im doing, said math teacher Kim Thomsen. In January of this year shewas in a car accident that broke her neck. The doctors gaveher a 10 percent chance that she would ever walk again andsix months later told her the percentage dropped to two.

From the beginning I set out to prove them wrong, saidKim, who has been an inspiration to many with her positiveattitude. Last week she returned to her teaching position atthe middle school and is working everyday for half the day.Kim gets around in a motorized wheel chair, but throughintensive physical therapy she is beginning to walk.

Kim was in the hospital for 17 weeks after the accident. When she was discharged in May she began living at Mary

Free Bed where shes undergoing physical therapy. TracyOostema, her physical therapist since the accident, said,What has been particularly unique about Kim is the wayshe has handled herself in the difficult times. She has grievedthe accident and injury and there have been many tears, butshe has not allowed it to steal her joy for life. Throughout theprocess she has stayed focused on her goals, has continued tothink of others, and has used the accident and her experienceto encourage others.

Kims day begins at 4 a.m. After working three hours atthe school, she has physical therapy from 1 to 4 p.m. In theevening she grades papers and prepares for the next day.

Currently her older farm home is under construction to

make it accessible for her to get around in a wheelchair. Kimplans on moving back into her home in Stanton by November.Since last week Kim began driving using hand controls. Afterhours of training to make this possible, she has gained a littlemore independence.

Kim is a remarkable woman and it has been a privilege towork and walk along side her in this process. She has maderemarkable improvements and many times exceeded my ownexpectations and hopes for her, said Tracy.

Kim said shes grateful for the support of family and friends. She pinpointed her mother for around-the-clock care. Mymom has been there for me everyday since my accident, shesaid tearfully.
