The Montcalm County 4-H Fair Boardis pleased to announce Sackett Potatoes ofMecosta has donated $5,000 to the New Fair-grounds Building Project.

We think this is a very worthy cause, AlanSackett of Sackett Potatoes said. We have al- ways tried to support the community and es-pecially the youth who are interested in agri-culture. This project ts in with both of thosegoals.

Although Sackett Potatoes headquarters islocated outside of Montcalm County, Alan Sack-ett explained the farming operation includesmore than 1000 acres in Montcalm Countyand a potato storage facility near Greenville.Sackett farms with his two sons, Jeff and BrianSackett.

Sackett said he believes it is important foryouth to become involved in activities such as4-H or sports.

It is an excellent way for youth to learnabout responsibility and to care about some-thing besides themselves, he added.

We are very pleased that a prominentmember of the local agricultural communityrecognizes the importance of this project, PatSchuster, president of the fair board, said.

Our fundraising committee will be focusingin on individual farms and agribusinesses in thearea in the next few weeks, Schuster said. We believe that others in the agriculture industrywill be supportive of our efforts to build a newfair grounds.

Sackett agreed with Shuster.I think we are just the rst of many farms

and agribusinesses in the area who will be sup-portive of this project, he said.

Construction has already begun on the$3.9 million project. The fair board has madea commitment to host the 2011 fair at the newgrounds next July. The new fair grounds are lo-cated on 65 acres north of Greenville, just eastof the intersection of M-91 and Peck Road.

The sale of the original fairgrounds to Mont-calm Community College will be completed bythe end of August.

Hog farmers in Michigan need well-trained staff members to work in highlyskilled positions. That is where SwineJobs School comes in.

Through a combination of classroominstruction and hands-on learning onlocal swine farms, Swine Jobs Schooltrains interested students for positionson modern swine farms. The next session

of Swine Jobs School begins September7, 2010. Classroom sessions will be heldat the Schoolcraft Township Building inVicksburg.

The school focuses on students whohave completed high school and are look-ing for immediate employment or work-ers who are currently unemployed and

looking for opportunities to re-enter the workforce. The program is designed tohelp students learn the skills they needto work on swine farms, as well as thejob and interpersonal skills they need foremployment. The school is taught, orga-nized and sponsored by Michigan StateUniversity (MSU) Extension swine spe-cialists and Extension educators.

During the rst two weeks of SwineJobs School, the class meets for eight ses-sions that combine classroom instructionand on-farm, supervised training. Thesesessions will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.from September 7-10 and from Sept. 13-16. Over the 9 weeks of the school thatfollow, students will spend 16 hours a

week gaining on-farm work experienceon local swine farms. Work experienceswill be arranged to meet the needs of thestudents and the schedules of the hostfarms.

According to Jeff Taylor, produc-tion manager for Circle K Family Farms,L.L.C. and Lafayette Pork Production,L.L.C.; Swine Jobs School graduates

have a greater opportunity for successthan other new employees entering theirsystem.

We are very pleased with the SwineJobs School graduates currently work-ing on our farms, Taylor said. We paythem a competitive wage and allow themthe opportunity for advancement. Swine

Jobs School graduates come into oursystem better prepared for the positionswith a greater chance of success than ifwe hire new employees with the intent oftraining them internally.

If you know of someone who may beinterested in working on a hog farmorif you have employees on your farm thatyou would like to see obtain further train-

ing contact Jerry May (e-mail [email protected], phone (989) 875-5233) or DaleRozeboom (e-mail [email protected],phone 517-355-8398). Swine Jobs Schoolapplications, a class syllabus and expec-tations for the on-farm training are avail-able on the MSU Pork Teams Web site athttp://bit.ly/swinejobs.

EFT Emotional Freedom TechniqueSome of you may have seen on television (TLC) a few months ago a Paul McKenna using tapping

techniques and Thought Field Therapy (TFT) created by Dr. Roger Callaghan to help people eliminate food cravings.

We recently met Dr. Gary Laundre, who wrote the book, The Happiness Code. This is based onEFT -- Emotional Freedom Technique, which is the latest version of TFT. The EFT can be applied by atherapist or you can easily do it on yourself by reading and using the information in The HappinessCode.

This material can be used for eliminating Major Fears and Phobias, Panic Attacks, Guilt Shame, and

Embarrassment, Anger, Grief and Lost Love, Anxiety and Depression, as well as Addictive Urges andObsessive Behavior.

In our brain, in the limbic area, pineal gland, and hypothalamus, we house something called theGuardian Filter. This is not an actual physical structure, but rather it is a mechanism that filters informationbetween our conscious and subconscious mind. These filters are made up acomposite of our beliefs, past emotional traumas, past illnesses and head injuries. If the information stored in the Guardian Filter is not accurate, we can react inan inappropriate manner. Example: we may feel a heights phobia from simply

watching a movie where someone is looking over a cliff. This misinterpretationin the filter is what causes us to have emotional reactions that do not fit thecircumstance.

We are fortunate because Dr. Laundre lives and works in Grand Rapids. He willsee clients there if needed, but he said he actually preferred that people learnhow to use the methods in the book. That way, you are always in charge and youcan fix your self if needed. He also does smoking cessation and weight controlprograms.
