Envision: Honeoye Falls
What do you get when you mix Design Thinking, business savvy, spatial imagination, acharming village Main Street in need of some TLC and the training of knowing how toput it all together?
You get the Spring 2014 RIT Interior Design Senior Special Projects class presentationcalled Envision: Honeoye Falls Main Street
RIT Interior Design students visited the small village on some of the coldest days ofJ anuary and were taken by the charm of the Main Street, the Falls and the possibilities
of what could be. From there they began to dream. Owners worked with students to gain access to buildings, to be interviewed and
document conditions. Students worked with real and imagined clients to help create anew vision for the existing empty storefronts. Research included history, buildingconsiderations and the needs of the town, and then the design ideation began
A peer review at mid term occurred to keep the talented students on track and thenfinally
Posters were created to explain Concepts, Existing conditions, Ideation and Plans, with
3 D renderings, showing off the ideas that could one day be a reality. Students presented their ideas to the village residents and board on May 16 to rave

Envisioning Main Street, with
RITs helpSarah Taddeo, Staff writer; 12:07 a.m. EDT May 17, 2014
As Honeoye Falls recovers from losing its General Motors plant a few yea rs ago, RochesterInstitute of Tec hnology design students unveiled plans Friday to revive the villages MainStreet business culture.
Christina Birkentall, a visiting assistant professor of design at RIT and a resident of HoneoyeFalls, oversaw a class of senior design students who each imagined and designed a businessthat would fill an actual empty space along Honeoye Falls Main Street. The studentspresented their work to the community at Fridays exhibition at 5 W. Ma in St. in HoneoyeFalls.
Were giving the village a vision to help market the village spaces, and to see whatbusinesses could potentially be here, Birkentall said.
She c ame up with the idea to redesign storefronts while brainstorming about villagerevitalization strateg ies. Students toured the Ma in Street area and spaces in surrounding
buildings, then drew up plans for businesses they thought would thrive in the community,Birkentall said. Its been a lot of work, but (the students) have had an opportunity to have areal space and real clients.
While the municipal government was not direc tly involved in the design projec t, said Honeoye Falls Mayor Richard Milne, the village has a positive history ofcollaboration with college groups. Itll be very positive for our businesses to try to dovetail some of their ideas, whether they use the program directly or not, Milnesaid. The village of Honeoye Falls current slogan and logo came from an RIT marketing student, he said.
Depending on the spac e, some students worked with existing businesses or building owners to determine the type and layout of their business idea , Birkentall said.At this point, there is no funding for any of the ideas to progress to a building pha se, she said, but some ideas may be implemented in the future.
Senior RIT design student Melanie Spath worked with Tanvi Asher, owner of Peppermint clothing store on Pa rk Avenue, to c reate a design layout for Asher Bridal a
bridal shop in a two-story building at 27 W. Ma in St. that would house both a studio and retail space for Ashers brida l designs.
Since the village aesthetic is fairly high-end, Spa th said she thought a boutique would work perfec tly on Main Street.
Students measured their spaces, then designed layouts using SketchUp 3D modeling softwa re. They displayed the design mode ls on posters at Fridays exhibition.
Design student Courtney Ellis created a farm-to-table bistro called Five West Main at 5 W. Main St. that would feature locally grown produce and meat on its menu.Theres a lot of farms and people with gardens surrounding Honeoye Falls, she said, so a business like Five West Main could forge a community connection andperk up the economy.
Birkentall said she hopes students will think about what makes a walkable, innovative community after this experience, and that Honeoye Falls will implement someof the student ideas.
Were an engaged community and we have the foot traffic, Birkentall said. But if we just build out these empty spaces, we can reinvigorate Main Street.
