when on site A member of Senior Leadership Team is on site every day to support the

operational running of the school. The Principal and Vice Principal contact school daily to offer support and advice and to monitor the current working arrangements.

Impact of reduced staffing levels on student activities and work tasks

Employees, students, contractors, visitors

Potential infectious disease, Injury or harm from accidents,

Staffing levels are reviewed in line with current DfE guidance and where necessary advice is taken from St Helens LA Schools Advisory Service;

This is a dynamic risk assessment and so the plan may change dependent on our ability to maintain a safe working environment

Employees work on a rota basis to provide adequate cover and to reduce the number of persons on site at any one time.

Risk assessments are undertaken and a dynamic risk assessment is completed to consider the impact on safety due to reduced staffing levels and to clarify what control measures need to be implemented. For example, there will be no contact sport. The outcome from this exercise will identify whether an activity or task can be carried out safely or if an alternative one will need to be done instead;

The Principal or other senior personnel, will keep in regular contact with employees to monitor the working arrangements and provide support and advice where necessary.

Spread of COVID-19 virus via germs on surfaces and furniture within the building

Employees, students, visitors, contractors, parents, governors and members of the public

Potential spread of infectious disease

School has daily cleaning regime managed by FM. All employees, students, trustees and visitors are required to follow

guidelines re washing hands for 20 seconds upon arrival on site and/or use the hand sanitiser at the point of entry;

All employees and students wash their hands more frequently, particularly before eating and drinking, applying first aid, before and after free association time and after using the toilet;

Posters are displayed on general hand hygiene; Poster on cleaning and disinfection guidance is on display; Students are reminded to avoid touching their faces with unwashed

hands;School Opening Arrangements During COVID-19 Restrictions General Risk Assessment

Everyone follows the Catch it, Bin it, Kill it guidance to catch coughs and sneezes in tissues and throw them in the bin immediately (hands to be washed immediately after disposal);

Tissues are readily available in the areas being used; Students are reminded how to catch coughs and sneezes if a tissue is not

readily available i.e. in the crook of the elbow rather than in the hands; Areas of the building that are in use are subject to frequent cleaning by

employees and/or a cleaning contractor; Employees have been instructed on cleaning and sanitising requirements; All key areas and surfaces are cleaned regularly during and after use; Cleaning and disinfection of frequently touched objects and surfaces is

carried out by employees e.g. railings/bannisters, door and window handles, taps, desk/table tops, sports equipment, teaching & learning aids, computer equipment, telephones, toys and bathroom facilities, etc.;

Good housekeeping is maintained at all times; including fully utilising the cleaning service provided by interserve, including full time cleaners employed during the day.

Waste bins are emptied daily and the contents disposed of safely; Employees having to clean bodily fluids are aware of and implement the

controls outlined in the establishment's Cleaning of Bodily Fluids risk assessment;

PPE is provided for employees to wear during certain cleaning activities and must be worn as instructed e.g. gloves, aprons etc.;

PPE is provided along with guidance for first Aiders If necessary the Principal or Director of Finance will arrange for a deep

clean to be carried out. Work has already started with cleaning team working through school in preparation for our impending return.

Note: For instances where it is necessary for a deep clean to be carried out following a suspected case of COVID-19 virus on site a deeper clean will be required in accordance with the guidance COVID-19: cleaning in non-healthcare settings.

infectious disease DfE COVID-19 guidance on implementing social distancing in educational settings is reviewed regularly;

Employees are socially distancing themselves from each other, students and parents/carers at all times;

Parents/carers will not enter the school unless absolutely necessary and, if they do need to enter the school, they will follow the strict handwashing and social distancing guidelines;

Trustees will not enter the school unless absolutely necessary and, if they do need to enter the school, they will follow the strict handwashing and social distancing guidelines;

Arrangements are in place for parents/carers to drop off and collect children at specified times, without physically entering the premises e.g. final bay of visitor car park set up as drop off point with socially distanced queueing system in place.

Students are instructed to socially distance themselves from employees and other students in class, at break and lunch times and this is supervised;

Room layouts and table settings in class have been adjusted to allow for social distancing e.g. tables spaced out to the recommended distance i.e. a minimum of 2 meters apart. This will be further supported by revised class ratios in operation.

Employee or student displaying signs of COVID-19 whilst in school

Employees, students, visitors, contractors, parents, governors and members of the public

Potential spread of infectious disease

Employees are aware of the virus symptoms and are vigilant in reporting all concerns to the responsible person who will reference DfE COVID-19: guidance for education settings for advice on dealing with the situation;

Employees who have assisted someone who has taken ill with COVID-19 symptoms will wash their hands for 20 seconds, they do not need to go home unless they display the symptoms themselves;

Employees showing symptoms are sent home and reminded to self-isolate following current government guidance for staying at home, they are advised not to return until they have received a negative covid 19 test result;

If a student displays symptoms they will be placed in a separate room until they can be collected, whilst being mindful of individual students' needs, they are advised not to return until they have received a negative covid 19 test result;

Windows are opened in the rooms used for increased ventilation; If it is not possible to isolate the students e.g. if it causes them undue

distress or they need to remain under adult observation, an assessment will be carried out to see whether it is sufficient to move them to an area which is at least 2 metres away from others;

If an individual (adult or child) showing COVID-19 symptoms, needs to use the bathroom while waiting to go home, they will use a separate bathroom if possible. The bathroom will then be cleaned and disinfected before being used by anyone else;

Once staff members / students displaying symptoms have left site, all areas they have been in contact with are deep cleaned

Spread of Infection Employees, students, visitors, contractors, parents, governors and members of the public

Potential spread of infectious disease Spillages of bodily fluids, e.g. respiratory and nasal discharges, are

cleaned up immediately in line with the infection control guidance. Staff are encouraged to transfer information digitally, e.g. via email,

and to avoid transferring information in paper format. Staff are informed via email that they must not enter the school

premises if they show signs of being unwell and believe they have been exposed to coronavirus.

Staff do not return to school before the minimum recommended exclusion period (or the ‘self-isolation’ period) has passed, in line with the infection control guidance and local and national guidance. As soon as school is notified of an employee with symptoms, they are referred for testing and told to self isolate until the results are returned.

Staff inform the Principal when they plan to return to work after having coronavirus and completing self-isolation.

Staff to notify the Principal if they have an impaired immune system or a medical condition that means they are more vulnerable to infections

– alternate working arrangements are put in place where required. Any additional provisions for staff who are more vulnerable to

infections are put in place by the Principal.Everyone is instructed to monitor themselves and others and look out for similar symptoms if somebody has been sent home with suspected coronavirus.

Staff are vigilant and report concerns about their own, a colleague’s or a student’s symptoms to the Principal.

Need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Employees, students, visitors, contractors, parents, governors and members of the public

Potential spread of infectious disease

Ensuring that appropriate levels of PPE are sourced and readied for our return so that it enables schools to follow Government and Union guidance. Principal and Director of Finance to work with the local authority and suppliers to establish a] what protective equipment will be needed, for whom and in what circumstances, and b] if protective clothing and equipment will be centrally provided or whether schools have to source locally and independently.

Employees are aware of the need to use the appropriate PPE when completing specific tasks e.g. cleaning, first aid;

Insufficient levels of PPE should be reported to the most senior member of staff;

PPE is provided as detailed in task risk assessments e.g. Intimate care of students by trained staff.

Reduced first aid provision

All building occupants

Untreated injuries Daily consideration is given to the reduced level of first aid provision on site;

First Aiders are aware of the Government guidance for first responders; Employees working in the school are kept informed of the first aid

arrangements via the staffing rota; As a minimum an Appointed Person will be delegated to take charge in an

emergency situation which will be an SLT staff member on the premises In the event of an incident requiring first aid, should there be no nominated

first aider available, the Appointed Person can seek advice from the NHS by calling 111 and asking for medical advice, or call the emergency services on 999 to request an ambulance;

For instances where first aid qualifications are due for renewal and may expire during the current crisis the HSE has announced a 3 month extension to the validity of all first aid certificates, including Paediatric First Aid. KT to reissue everyone’s current first aid status.

Lack of Social Distancing Employees, students, visitors, contractors, parents, governors and members of the public

Potential spread of infectious disease

Staff to avoid contact with people who show symptoms of coronavirus, both in and out of school.

Where a member of staff must accompany or supervise a student showing symptoms of coronavirus, infection control procedures and social distancing arrangements are adhered to at all times.

Where practicable, staff and volunteers always keep at least two metres apart and avoid close proximity interaction.

Where guidance suggests or recommends PPE to be provided for staff members whilst in school.

Where close proximity interaction (being less than two metres apart) cannot be avoided, staff and volunteers are instructed to:

o Identify beforehand which tasks must be done in close proximity to others and which tasks can be carried out at a distance or remotely.

o Work facing away from each other or side-by-side, where possible, instead of face-to-face.

o Where face-to-face interaction is essential, minimise the frequency and duration of the interaction.

o Limit close proximity interaction to 15 minutes at a time. To accommodate this there will be split break and lunch periods, where limited numbers of students will have access to key facilities such as outside space, dining space and toilets.

o Limit the number of people in close proximity interactions to no more than two people.

The size and frequency of essential group gatherings is limited to no more than seven people, and this is communicated to staff and volunteers via email. This also still needs to be within social distancing

recommendations Where staff must work in team to carry out their role or perform a task,

teams are arranged beforehand and, where possible, team mixing is minimised.

Where group gatherings must occur in larger numbers or higher frequency, alternative arrangements are put in place and enforced by the Principal , e.g. remote meetings are arranged or this is in a setting like a school hall that facilitates it.

Where applicable, class sizes are limited to 15 students and two members of teaching staff.

The use of communal areas, e.g. the staff room, will be limited to a one in one out basis, supported by staggered times, queues, or rotas are implemented where required.

Sanitising equipment will be provided next to kettles / fridges for staff to be able to clean before and after use and staff will be encouraged not to prepare drinks for each other.

Floor markings or signs are used, where necessary, to indicate any two-metre spacing and one way system in use, e.g. queues and direction of travel on corridors.

Contact with parents is minimised and alternative arrangements are in place – where contact with parents must occur face-to-face, infection control procedures and social distancing arrangements are communicated to parents.

Some SEND students may find it challenging to social distance, and in these circumstances, they will be brought off normal timetable to work supervised by a Teaching Assistant.

Where staff, volunteers or students would be unable to follow social distancing arrangements for a particular activity, the principal assesses whether the activity needs to continue – mitigating actions are put in place if continuing the activity is essential.

including amendments to normal working practices due to the current limited resources and building use, etc.;

Daily checks are made to ensure all required fire doors are kept unlocked and are will be available in the event of an emergency;

Room fire safety capacity levels are considered when deciding which areas of the building are to be used;

Fire doors will remain closed in line with the fire plan however will be steam cleaned throughout the day to stop the transference of infection.

Nominated persons are identified each day/shift:In the event of a fire alarm -

o to continue with current arrangements in terms of leaving school by nearest exit and gathering over the road on the school playing fields. Whilst reduced numbers are in school all students to gather in their form groups on the tennis court

In the event of a lock-down -o to call/liaise with the Police.o to lead students to a 'safe area' depending upon the type of

security threat/lock-down.o social distancing rules will apply at all times unless there is an

imminent risk to life.Reduced premises inspections, tests, servicing and maintenance

All building occupants

Accidents or incidents resulting in injury, occupational disease, or a risk to health e.g. electrocution, fire, legionellosis, asbestosis

Premises management inspections, testing and servicing of plant, equipment, etc. are kept up-to-date for all parts of the building that remain in use e.g.:

o Fire Checks : weekly fire alarm checks continue to be made and recorded for occupied parts of the building. The same principle applies to emergency lighting, fire extinguishers etc.

o Asbestos inspections : undertaken on any areas of the building containing asbestos which remain open. If there is no prospect of areas containing asbestos being disturbed they will be safely left until the school fully reopens, at which point checks will be made as part of the reopening process.

o Legionella/Water hygiene : weekly flushing regimes will continue; prior to undertaking the flushing regime, the domestic hot water plant will be switched on and fully operational to ensure water is stored above 60 °C for at least 1 hour prior to commencing the weekly flushing regime to sterilize the hot water system and reduce the proliferation of legionella bacteria.

o Contractor servicing and maintenance : servicing, etc., will continue wherever possible (see section on Contractors and visitors to the premises). The schools property consultant will be contacted for advice prior to reopening areas of the school where it has not been possible to keep these up-to-date.

o Testing of electrical items (PAT) : PAT testing will continue where possible. If not possible, the school will put local controls in place e.g. by undertaking pre-use visual checks for signs or damage or scorching, removing any damaged or faulty equipment from use, switching off and unplugging all equipment after use etc.

Records of all testing and checks will be kept; Records will also be kept of those areas that have not been checked and

why e.g. due to building closure, reduced resource, etc. These areas will be fully checked before reopening.

Contractors and visitors to site

Employees, students, visitors, contractors, parents, governors and members of the public

Potential spread of infectious disease

Visitors to site are limited to essential persons only; All visitors will follow the Government's guidance and the school's strict

hygiene and social distancing rules e.g. hand washing/sanitisation upon entry;

Contractors must obtain permission before attending site; Contractors will wear appropriate PPE as determined by their employer,

however they may be asked to wear additional PPE (provided by the school) upon arrival e.g. gloves, mask, coveralls, shoe covers, etc. Contractors will comply with any additional PPE or hygiene requirements made by the school prior to entry;

Contractors will keep the time spent on site to a minimum and will make all efforts to only attend site to carry out work during periods of reduced occupation;

Alternative routes around or through the premises will be used as instructed by the school e.g. the school may usher the contractor through a fire escape door to access an adjacent room, rather than walking them through the school to reach their destination.

Home Schooling Employees and members of their household

Development or worsening of existing musculoskeletal injuries or health conditions

Employees are aware of the current Government guidance regarding self-isolation if they are in a 'high risk' category due to a health condition, or if they or any members of their household display symptoms of COVID-19.

Employees will be required to work from home where possible, in line with the School's needs, if they are not able to attend work to undertake their normal duties.

Employees take regular breaks e.g. if a 'good' homeworking set-up is achieved a 5-minute break taken every hour is adequate. If a good set-up cannot be achieved then more frequent breaks must be taken e.g. 5 minutes in every 25 minutes (or in every 15 minutes if the employee is experiencing any discomfort);

Employees will report any health issues they experience which they believe is related to their homeworking set-up to their line manager as soon as possible so that further action can be taken;

Exercises should be undertaken to avoid static postures at the workstation;

Employees are required to watch:o The HSE video on temporary working at home – workstation

setup; and, if they continue to experience any issues:

Good housekeeping and cable management must be implemented whilst working at home; cables must not present tripping hazards to self or other family members;

Employees are reminded keep confidential or personal sensitive information secure in line with GDPR rules whilst working from home;

Employee isolation and reduced communication

Employees Increased levels of stress/anxiety and

The Principal or other senior personnel, will keep in regular contact with employees to monitor the working arrangements and offer

support and advice where necessary; Communication with employees is accommodated via team meetings,

emails, text, phone calls, use of a shared drive on the academy network, the academy Office 365;

There is flexibility in working hours and the amount of work completed by employees from home due to the current exceptional circumstances where employees may be looking after their own children at home or caring for other vulnerable family members;

Employees are able to make contact with a colleague or manager for advice and support, or just for reassurance, during the normal working day; this would normally be their immediate line manager in the first instance who can then refer to senior team if deemed appropriate.

Employees are made aware of sources of information that will assist employee wellbeing such as the sources displayed on staff wellbeing cards and the website.

This general risk assessment will apply to this area/task/activity in most schools providing the control measures described are in operation and there are no further local significant hazards.

I certify that the risk assessment above fully applies to the area/task/activity under assessment in Rainford High

Attendance: who will make decisions about who attends and why and how can communicate this effectively to parents and students?What if parents simply say ‘no’?

Adhere to the new protocol for attendance accepting more readily reasons why children are not to attending, respecting parental and student anxiety about the situation and the barriers that they view are insurmountable in terms of attending school. New Covid Guidance from DFE.

Y10 parents we will be expected to notify school if their child is not going to be in to prevent a potential safeguarding risk.

JK 1-6-20 Onwards

Safeguarding We must fully understand our school’s context to ensure that no child slips through the net or becomes more susceptible to risk (i.e. neglect, exploitation) during a time of partial opening/partial home-learningwe must ensure that all other students remaining at home are not 'lost' in the planning for the return to school of other students

Need the process of returning students to schools be managed in a measured way to help avoid further disruption and the potential need for schools to close again later in the year. This is why we need to be certain of which students are going to be travelling to and from school on any one day, with confirmation from parents.

The school has taken account of all government guidance and reviewed the available independent guidance in planning for wider reopening.

This document is an overview of the procedures that we have put in place to make the school site as safe as possible.

Classrooms have been deep cleaned and will be cleaned every evening after use prior to students arriving the next day Fire doors that cannot be kept open will be steamed cleaned throughout the day. All fire doors that can be open during the working day

will be kept open to avoid unnecessary contact. The school has increased the amount of cleaning that will be taking place throughout the school day. The arrival and departure times for different groups of students from the 15 th June will be staggered. Arrivals will be managed by a car drop off point and a social distance queuing system leading to the main school entrance. Student arrival will see them hand sanitise, be signed in by a member of staff and then told where to go to start their school day. The school will ensure that students wash hands regularly throughout the day. The school will operate good respiratory protocols of catch it, bin it, kill it. Students will need to maintain social distancing protocols to meet school expectations of appropriate behaviour. Students will follow the clearly signed and social distanced one-way system towards their classroom. The one-way systems is in place throughout the school building to support social distancing. On route students will stop at a hand wash station supervised by a member of staff. Doors to classrooms will be open to avoid unnecessary contact. Windows in classrooms will be open to support good ventilation. Students will enter classrooms that are equipped with tissues, hand sanitiser and door wedges. All desks are marked to ensure students

are two metres apart. All computer areas are sanitised three times during the day On route to break and lunch students will be taken and instructed to wash hands. Breaks and Lunchtime will be staggered to ensure social distancing can be maintained and students can be confident during these social

times. Hand sanitiser stations are positioned next to the biometric fingerprint system we have in place. Students will be in classes with a maximum of 15 students with two meters between everyone one. Students will move rooms as little as

possible but some movement will be necessary to facilitate seeing individual subject teachers. Students will depart in a managed fashion and observe social distancing protocols Rainford High is a diverse community and is making appropriate adjustments for all community members based on their protected

characteristics and individual circumstance.
