Deputy Principal’s News Hello RRHC Community

The HSC examinations for our Year 12 students have continued this week. Our potential School Captains and Vice Captains are currently preparing their speeches to deliver to staff and students at an assembly next Friday, 15 November, at 10:15am.

On Thursday 14 November students are invited to participate in a mufti‐day to support research into Ovarian Cancer. There will be a free sausage sizzle and music during lunch time. We would like students to support this event and enjoy the day’s activities. We also have a music event on at RRHC that night from 6‐7:30pm. This is an amazing opportunity to see our music students perform.

Year 8 students will shortly be receiving a letter that outlines their subject choices and associated requirements. Forms must be returned to Mr Gallagher as soon as possible. The goal is to provide transparency about subject fees and other requirements.

It is with great regret that RRHC has had to cancel the Year 8 and 9 Beach Trek Excursions due to a significant lack of students who wished to par cipate. RRHC has used a range of communica on techniques to inform students and parents/carers of this event in an a empt to generate greater numbers, unfortunately with no success. Refund forms are available from the office and will be provided to the students that have already paid. We accept there were deficits in the communica on from us and we will endeavour to improve our future communica on around camps and excursions. RRHC hopes that in future years these memorable and engaging events can be organised with success.

Friday 15 November is our Year 12 Formal. It will be an amazing event that has been put together by both students and staff and is a great way to end the HSC period and celebrate the ending of a major part of our students’ lives as they begin a new chapter that is full of opportunity and anticipation.

“Every day you have a new chapter to write about your journey of life. As you write that chapter do it so well such that if others read it, you would still be proud of yourself.” (Gift Gugu Mona)

Have a happy and safe weekend.

Luke Woodward Deputy Principal

Parents who are dropping off or picking up their children before or a er school are reminded to do this

in the areas outside of the bus, taxi, disability parking, and no stopping zones at the front of the school.

Suggested safe areas are the grassy tree‐ed area outside the Ag Shed in Lake Street or near the shelter in

McKenzie Park in Pi Street, where there is a footpath to the school. The other alterna ve is at the back

gate of the school on Alexandra Parade. The safety of our students is paramount.

Big Ideas Forum Two students from The Rivers Secondary College Richmond River High Campus are among just twenty two students from around Australia to take part in a student science forum next week.

Bridie and Saneigh will take an all‐expenses‐paid trip to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisa on’s (ANSTO) Big Ideas Forum.

Their science teacher, Pauline MacLeod, who will travel with Bridie and Saneigh, says they will work with some of Australia’s leading scien sts in workshops and other ac vi es to develop their curiosity about the importance of science to everyday life.

“ANSTO says the forum is more about curiosity, crea vity and passion than pre‐exis ng academic achievement,” said Pauline.

“It’s only by asking big ques ons that we challenge ourselves to come up with big solu ons, and that’s exactly what the forum is aiming at.

“We’re delighted at the girls’ success and securing places at the forum, both for their own academic and career development, and as role models to their peers for what’s achievable.”

Applica ons were made in the form of a ques on compiled by teams of Year 10 students, addressing an issue they are passionate about. They also had to submit a forty second video explaining why that issue was important to them.

Bridie and Saneigh posed the ques on: “Is there any alterna ve to making organ transplant pa ents’ lives easier and not revolve around an ‐rejec on medica on?”

The forum is based at the ANSTO Discovery Centre at Lucas Heights and runs from Monday to Thursday next week.
