Lodging Facilities in Richland County

With a past full of citizens, like Frank Lloyd Wright and Ada James, and landmarks such as the A.D. German Warehouse, the Mapleside footbridge, a bridge across the Pine River, and the first Municipal Auditorium in the State of Wisconsin, Richland Center is a historical area.

Today, with more than 5,000 residents, Richland Center is the only incorporated community in Richland County. The city’s central location in the county and its significance as the county’s commercial and cultural focal point make the community the ideal base from which to explore the rest of beautiful Richland County. Stop in the Visitor’s Center for a historic walking tour map of the Court Street Commercial Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Many commercial buildings and homes from the late 19th century are still intact and within easy walking distance of each other.

n BIRTHPLACE OF FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT

Frank Lloyd Wright was born on June 8, 1867, to William Carey Wright and Anna Lloyd Jones in Richland County. During 1917 through 1921, some of the most tumultuous years of his life, Wright designed the German Warehouse in his hometown for Albert Dell German’s wholesale grocery business. The warehouse follows the design mode of this time frame exhibited in other Wright buildings, including the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Midway Gardens in Chicago, and the

Frederick C. Bogk House in Milwaukee. The warehouse is a significant example of early poured concrete construction topped off by an impressive ornamental frieze. It is the only commercial building designed by Wright

from this period that is still extant.

n ADA JAMES

Ada James is Richland Center’s most widely known suffragist and is known for her work with disadvantaged children and women. In 1892, she and several other high school girls formed the Equality Club to assist in the campaign for women’s suffrage. Thanks to their efforts, in 1919 Wisconsin became the first state to ratify the 19th amendment. Richland Center women exerted influence in the suffrage movement far beyond the boundaries of Richland County. Ada James and her colleagues worked diligently for years, culminating in women voting nationwide for the first time in the presidential election of 1920.

n WISCONSIN’S FIRST MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM

The Richland Center City Municipal Auditorium was built in 1912. The Women’s Federated Clubs pushed the city council to be progressive and establish a place of culture and governance. This is the first municipal auditorium (both theater and government offices in one setting) in the state of Wisconsin. The process of fully renovating the building and creating the Richland County Performing Arts Center is currently underway.

• Trout Fishing There are 267 miles of Class I and Class II Trout Streams here in Richland County. The county has become a destination for anglers from near and far to experience this world class fishery.

• Canoeing and Kayaking The lower Wisconsin River is large, relatively swift-moving, and surrounded by hidden backwaters. The Kickapoo River is famous for its winding course and a favorite of paddlers. The Pine River winds through valleys, under a natural bridge, and boasts scenic views of bluffs and lowlands.

• Snowmobiling in Richland County offers 134 miles of groomed trails.

• The Pine River Recreation Trail is a 15-mile bike trail constructed on an abandoned railroad bed. The scenic trail follows the Pine River from Richland Center to Lone Rock. Ride over 15 bridges with spans up to 240 feet. Includes four ecosystems and longest curved bridge in Wisconsin. The trail is for hiking, biking, and snowmobiling.

n PURPLE HEART CITY

Governor Scott McCallum designated Richland Center as Wisconsin’s first Purple Heart City in the nation, in 2002. The Purple Heart Memorial is located in the American Legion Veterans Memorial Flag Park on Highway 14 West, between the UW–Richland Campus and Krouskop Park. You will see the flags blowing as you travel Highway 14.

n RICHLAND COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL

The memorial is dedicated to all Veterans of Richland County, beginning with the War of 1812, and honors those who have served, those who are serving, and those who will serve. It lists names of individuals who have been military personnel during a war or a conflict, or in peacetime, a resident of Richland County at some period in their life and who have been honorably discharged by the military (names are verified).

The Memorial is located along US Highway 14, next to the old railroad depot where our soldiers and marines boarded the train as far back as the Civil War to go off to war.

n EFFIGY MOUNDS

Richland County and Southern Wisconsin is where thousands of earthen monuments in the shapes of animals, spirit figures, and humans were built by ancient peoples. These fascinating mounds provide us with rare insights into the ideas of those bygone people. Internationally famous, the mounds have few items deliberately included that might help to explain them—adding to the mystery. The mounds were built 1,000 years ago, between A.D. 750 and 1050. The end of the mound construction coincides with the arrival of foreigners from the south (Illinois). Many of the effigy mounds contain human burials. All mounds are regarded by Indian people as being sacred.

n FOUR SEASONS OF FUN

FROM EXTREME…TO SERENE

Richland County offers adventures that are peaceful and serene or exciting and extreme to help you relax, recharge, and get away from it all.

Camping, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, golfing, biking, hiking, ice skating, snow shoeing—Richland County has it all.

• Lower Wisconsin River Road Scenic Byway, Highway 60, follows the Wisconsin River for 100 miles threading between the bluffs and the Wisconsin River or its backwaters. The byway has thousands of acres of public lands to explore and a variety of recreational opportunities

Visitors to the Richland County area soon discover that creativity and originality are part of what rural Wisconsin is all about.  From live music to theater, from galleries to historical sites, to the scenery of the Ocooch Mountain range, and the wildlife that shares the bounty of the rich land, there is plenty to do and see.

Come explore, celebrate, and experience the Midwest seasons in Richland County.  Richland County offers adventures that are peaceful and serene or exciting and extreme to help you relax, recharge, and get away from it all.

Richland County Performing Arts CenterDesigned by La Crosse, Wis. architect Percy Dwight Bentley, this red brick

municipal building was completed in 1912. Much of the impetus for the creation of the building originated with the influence of the Federated Women’s Clubs. It was described as the finest show house between Chicago and Minneapolis; first rate acts came to Richland Center because there were suitable dressing rooms and a sizeable stage for their shows to go on. The building was acquired in 2009 by the Richland County Performing Arts Council (RCPAC). The

organization plans to create a self-sufficient cultural and business center that will strengthen the economic and artistic growth of the community. RCPAC is embarking on phase one of the building

renovation. The Richland County Performing Arts Council (RCPAC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to operating and restoring the first municipal auditorium built in Wisconsin.

The A.D. German WarehouseAn architectural masterpiece, like any masterpiece, gains in meaning and enriches its owners and its community. The joys of an architectural masterpiece are its long lasting lessons and beauty. Such distinction belongs the A.D. German Warehouse designed in 1915 by Frank Lloyd Wright, located in Richland Center, his birthplace in 1867. This building is one of Wright’s architectural gems listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Wisconsin. It is the only warehouse designed by Wright and was built during his “organic” or “natural” period (1911-1924) which also included the famous Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and Midway Gardens in Chicago. The A.D. German Warehouse is an impressive brick structure topped by a magnificent concrete frieze. It employs a unique structural concept known as the “Burton Spider-web system.” The A.D. German Warehouse Conservancy (ADGWC) is committed to seeing this building redeveloped and reoccupied with a stable primary use compatible with the building, including a heritage tourism program.
