Of Saints and Angels

November is a busy month and the harbinger of an even busier month – December. For many, Thanksgiving defines November. This national time of Thanksgiving emerged from the turbulence of the mid 19th century. The Episcopal Church has de-clared that Thanksgiving Day is more than a national observation; Thanksgiving Day is also a Major Feast of the Church -- a feast wherein we acknowledge that we are God’s and that all that we are and all that we have is from God and the responsibili-ties associated with this truth. Yet, November offers much more especially when we look at the beginning and the ending of the month – saints and angels.

November begins with the great feast of All Saints’ Day. During previous eras of church history, the period from October 31, All Hallows’ Eve, to November 2, All Souls’ Day, was a period of great solemnity and celebration in the church. Through-out the Church Year we focus on the life of Jesus Christ and his teachings. We com-memorate his birth at Christmas, the great price he paid for the sins of the world at Holy Week, and we rejoice with heart and voice at Easter – the Day of Resurrection. The Feasts of All Saints and All Souls help us apply the Good News of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection directly to our own lives. On All Hallows’ Eve, we recognize our mortality. On All Saints’ and All Souls’ we are reminded that even in death, there is life through Jesus Christ, and we direct our attention to how those who have gone before and lived their lives in faithful service to the message of the Good News of Christ Jesus. And, in our remembrance of those gone before, we evaluate the way in which we live our own lives in service and glory to God.

By the time we reach the end of November, Advent is almost, if not already, a reality. Of the many topics that mark Advent, the messages of angels rank near the top. Ad-vent calls us to prepare for the Coming of Christ. We do this by remembering Christ’s first coming, his Nativity, and, also, in preparing to welcome Christ at his second coming – when he comes again in power and great glory. During Advent, we are reminded of the message of the angels to Mary and Zechariah and Joseph -- mes-sages that challenged them and invited into a closer relationship with God, if they were only willing to pursue that relationship. We reflect on how goes is uniquely call-ing each one of us to serve in ways we cannot yet imagine.

Eternal Life. Thanksgiving. Answering the call of God. November is more than a busy month; November is a life changing month through the Good News of Jesus Christ.

RECTOR’S NOTES

“And I mean to b one too” . . . A Confirmed Member of Ware Episcopal Church

Yes, it really is that time again . . . to begin preparing for Confirmation. Bishop Susan Goff will be joining us on Easter Sunday 2018 (April 1) for our Episcopal Visit, and that means it’s time to start thinking about confirmation, reaffirmation, or reception. Each of these are ways in which one may become a “confirmed adult communicant (member)” of Ware Church and the Episcopal Church. But first, a little bit about “rites of initiation” and “membership” in general.

An “initiation” is basically an act by which we become a member of a larger group. When we add the word “rite” we shift our thinking to actions whereby we become a member of a faith commu-nity.

The first Rite of Initiation in the Christian Church is Baptism. When one is baptized, one makes an eternal covenant with God in the presence of fellow Christians to seek to live a Christian life. The one being baptized receives the promise of those gathered to support them in living out the Christian Life. The individual is then immersed in water, or water is poured over the individu-al, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Thus, the person is now a member of the Body of Christ – the universal and eternal Church.

Another Rite of Initiation is Confirmation / Reaffirmation. The Church places a great deal of im-portance on an Adult Profession of Faith. This is the reason for confirmation. If you were bap-tized as an infant or very young child, you were not able to speak for yourself and the Baptismal Covenant was made on your behalf. Once you reach “adulthood”, your confirm that Baptismal Covenant yourself, speaking for yourself. There is no right age for this to happen. The decision to have a child confirmed is made by the parents in consultation with the priest. Usually, chil-dren are ready to be confirmed starting around age 10 or 11, while some families prefer to con-firm when the child becomes a teen. But again, there is not “right age”. Confirmation does not apply to just children. Anyone who was baptized as an infant and has not Confirmed their Bap-tismal Covenant, would pursue confirmation. Confirmation recognizes a person as an adult member of the Body of Christ AND a member of the Episcopal Church as repre-sented by the local congregation. Confirmation is only done by a bishop of the Church thus connecting us with the ancient faith through Apostolic Succession.

When someone who was baptized as an adult, meaning they have already made their adult pro-fession of faith, then when the bishop comes, REAFFIRMATION is administered. This is the same as confirmation only recognizing that the person has already made an adult pro-fession of faith and is reaffirming that in the presence of the bishop. People also reaf-firm their baptismal covenant after significant life changes: marriage, birth of a child, retire-ment, etc.

T. Grant Ambrose

RECTOR’S NOTES

An additional Rite of Initiation is reception. “All Christians of other denominations who have been baptized with water and in the name of the Trinity, who have as adults made a prior affir-mation of their baptismal vows and who wish to be received "into the fellowship of this Com-munion," shall be presented to the Bishop for reception (from the Guidelines of the Diocese of Virginia). Reception is the rite wherein we recognize our brothers and sisters from other de-nominations who wish to become members of the Episcopal Church and a local congregation.

*A note about Letters of Transfer. If you come to Ware Church from another Episcopal Congre-gation and desire to be recognized as a “confirmed adult communicant” you need to transfer your letter of membership from your previous congregation. There is nothing that has to be done by the bishop. The local priest will contact your previous church and request a letter transferring your membership from that previous church to Ware Church. Unless this is done, you remain, officially, a member of the previous church.

Fww. That’s a lot! Easiest way to figure all this ask, contact Fr. Grant to speak about your par-ticular situation and desire.

Where do we go from here?

First, prayerfully consider if the time for confirmation or reaffirmation or reception has arrived. Especially consider reaffirmation if you have had a significant event occur in your life or just need to reconnect with the church.

Second, contact the church office to begin the process.

Third, spread the word. Let others know about these opportunities and do your part to encour-age the growth of the Kingdom of God.

Again, at any point along the way, please contact Fr. Grant with questions.

Please let the church office know if you or someone you know is interested in a rite of initiation by November 19. Classes will begin in December (schedule and more information to follow).

Fall Stewardship campaign -

Our recent "Gathering at the Well" sessions opened the door to engaging conversations about the future of our parish and God's plan for us as individ-uals, as well as Ware as a Church. During our stewardship campaign, we will step back from the group discussions, to reflect individually on what exactly God is calling each of us to be at Ware. With "all hearts open," we hope that you are able to share a more intimate conversa-tion with your family and with God about how to make the best use of your re-sources (time, talent, and treasure) to fulfill God's plan for our church.

Ware Church’s Young Adult Community Reaches Out to Local Doctors

October 18 is the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist. St. Luke is the patron saint of doctors and surgeons. This year, as a way of saying “Thank You” to area doctors and surgeons, the Young Adult Community put together gits bags complete with pens shaped like bones and vitamins, dark chocolate, a thank you card and, of course, a roll of LifeSavers! These tokens of thanks were given to the members of the surgical department at Walter Reed Hospital and the health providers at Courthouse Family Medicine. The Young Adult Community expects this to be an annual event and looks to “adopt” a new set of healthcare providers each year.

SPIRITUAL WEEKEND RETREAT

December 2017

“We Laud and Magnify God’s Glorious Name”

This is the retreat weekend at Roslyn Retreat Center, Richmond ,VA, a retreat center of the Diocese of Virginia. There is an optional overnight component for those who wish to have an

extended retreat prior to the start of Advent. A precise date will be shared closer to the week-end.

Synopsis: In Advent, we contemplate what it will mean to receive God as a child and as a human as well as con-template the glorious return of Christ. Today, we think about our Advent preparations to once again hear the

Angels sing and see the child wrapped in swaddling clothes.

Happening This Month

November 5 All Saints Day--‐Who are the saints in your faith community? What makes someone a saint?

Children are asked to dress as their favorite saint for church. Will you be Margaret of Scotland, Joan of Arc,

Martin of Tours? These are a few of saints we will study in during class. We will have a contest for the best

costume during Sunday School. Students will decorate their crowns & shields in class.

November 12 Matthew 25:1-13 What could it be telling us today? I wonder what we can do to prepare for

God? Today, we celebrate the Harvest with Farm ‐to- Table during Coffee Hour.

November 19 Each child will be given different colored leaves. On each leaf, they will draw or write one thing

that God has given them. The leaves will be placed on our tree to decorate and remind us of the gifts we

have received.

November 26 Streamers of Thanks! Last Sunday after Pentecost. The students will begiven streamers of rib-

bon to write things they want to give thanks for in their lives. When they are done, have them roll it up around

a popsicle stick to take home for their rooms.

A Look Ahead to December

December 3 Advent Sunday & Breakfast– collect greens from your gardens to make an Advent Wreath.

Please bring enough to share. The church supplies the oasis & candles. Remember the local nursing homes

and those who are infirm will receive and advent wreath.

Christmas wreaths for sale- Please support our annual fundraiser for our youth and purchase a wreath. The

wreaths are fresh and handmade at Farmer’s Daughter in Gloucester.

December 10 Help us decorate the Christmas Tree for our Farm‐to-Table scheduled during coffee hour.

CHOIR & MUSIC

Sanctuary Choir and Recruiting: You have probably heard the Sanctuary choir on Sun-day’s and I am sure you will agree that they are sounding wonderful. Our journey has begun and we would love for you to join us. Did you sing in High school? Have your previously sung but had a family and never got round to trying again? Would you like to have fun? Do you like a challenge? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then come and visit Charles. No audition is needed, but a good idea of pitch and rhythm would be advantageous. Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9pm. ALSO, We need MEN!!!

Exciting news! There will be several concert opportunities are happening this month at Ware and further afield but both involving Charles. On Thursday, November 2nd, at 6:30pm, Ware Church will be hold “All Souls’ Requiem Eucharist” with the Treble Choir.
