The Beginning

• Once upon a time, in a land

called shapesville, there was

a very odd shape called

rhombus and he was VERY

different from all the other

shapes. No one liked rhombus

because he was not the

same……

….All the of the other shapes in shapesville

were square, rectangle and triangle, but

no one had ever seen a shape like

rhombus…

In shapesville, all the shapes had properties that made them similar.

The sqaure properties state: The perimeter of a square: To find the

perimeter of a square, just add up all the lengths of the sides. The

area of a square: To find the area of a square, multiply the lengths

of two sides together

• The rectangle properties stated:To find the perimeter of a rectangle, just add up all the lengths of the sides: To find the area of a rectangle, just

multiply the length times the width:

• And the triangle properties states that: A plane figure with three straight sides and three angles and the formula is one half times the base length times the height of the triangle

So everyone thought that

rhombus should leave

shapesville because he did

not belong so he left…….

• Rhombus wandered on for days until he came across a town called Circle Properties…

and in the town city properties there were shapes called Circles and they had rules that

seperated them from other shapes they were their own family. these were the properties:

• Center A point inside the circle. All points on the circle are equidistant (same distance) from

the center point.

• Radius The radius is the distance from the center to any point on the circle. It is half the

diameter

• Diameter The distance across the circle. The length of any chord passing through the center.

It is twice the radius…..

• ………..Circumference The circumference is the distance around the circle

• Area Strictly speaking a circle is a line, and so has no area. What is usually

meant is the area of the region enclosed by the circle.

• ChordA line segment linking any two points on a circle.

• TangentA line passing a circle and touching it at just one point

• SecantA line that intersects a circle at two points.

• Rhombus knew he did not belong in that city so he continued his

search until he came to a village called Pythagoras' Theorem

where they believed that In a right angled triangle:

the square of the hypotenuse is equal to

the sum of the squares of the other two sides. In this village there

were all different kinds of triangles…they were filled with complex

formulas and examples of their belief like a2 + b2 = c2 and they

used this formula to find missing values to triangles like these:

a2 + b2 = c2 52 + 122 = c2 25 + 144 = c2169 = c2 c2 = 169c =√169 c = 13

• Rhombus knew that this town was not for him so he continued on

sad and lonely until he came onto a cave he decided he would stay

there so he went in……

Page 13: Rhombus in Shapesville 5 th grade reading book By: Yasir fisher.

As he walked into the cave he heard the

sounds of other shapes……

As rhombus walked into the cave he heard a

noise. “helloooo” Rhombus called out

nervously. “Hello” a little voice answered

and walked into the light…………

Rhombus could not believe it the shape that was talking to

him was a shape even he had never seen before. “Who

are you”, rhombus asked nervously. “My name is

octagon and what is yours?” Asked the shape…..

..“My name is rhombus” he replied. “I-I have never seen a

shape like you before”, he continued to say. I could say

the same to you but in this cave there are a lot of shapes

you will find different.

Page 20: Rhombus in Shapesville 5 th grade reading book By: Yasir fisher.

Really? Rhombus asked. “Yes come see for

yourself” he replied…and walked deeper

into the cave

Page 21: Rhombus in Shapesville 5 th grade reading book By: Yasir fisher.

Rhombus followed Octagon deeper into the cave

where they finally stopped in front of a camp fire

with a lot of different shapes surrounding it

Rhombus was shocked.

Page 22: Rhombus in Shapesville 5 th grade reading book By: Yasir fisher.

• “All of you shapes are different from the shapes

in shapesville” said Rhombus. “So are You” said

a shape as he stepped forward. “We all have

been banned from Shapesville because we are

different, but that is what makes us unique”…..

Page 23: Rhombus in Shapesville 5 th grade reading book By: Yasir fisher.

……“My name is scalene triangle and I have three unequal

sides” said the shape.

All of the shapes then started stepping up saying their

name as they came up

My name is Trapezoid and I am a quadrilateral with one

pair of parallel sides”. Said another shape.

Page 24: Rhombus in Shapesville 5 th grade reading book By: Yasir fisher.

My name is Pentagon and I am a Polygon having

five sides and five interior angles.

And last but not least “I am Octagon as you know

and I am a plane figure with eight straight sides

and eight angles” he said boldly.

Page 25: Rhombus in Shapesville 5 th grade reading book By: Yasir fisher.

....“And we are the uncommon shapes. We have been kicked out of our homes because we are different”…… “I see you have been banned too”.

“Yes …um..can I stay here”? Rhombus asked nervously.

“Of course you can, This will be your new family and you can live in harmony with all the uncommon shapes’ said octagon with a grin

Page 26: Rhombus in Shapesville 5 th grade reading book By: Yasir fisher.

…….So from that day forward rhombus lived happily in the cave of the uncommon shapes where they were not based on their angles or perimeter or even their area but by their character…..
