    POLYNESIAN MYTHOLOGY(PART 1)

The God from Polynesianmythology, despite thesmallness of his staturewho apparently was, wasnot afraid to anything oranyone. It was endowedwith magical powers.Approximately, twentystories were written abouthis exploits, showing himas ingenious, brave andwomanizer.

When he was born,Taranga, her mother, wrapped it with a lock ofher hair and threw it intothe sea because he was

born premature (thispeople in ancient timeshad some habits whichwe consider very

barbaric). But then, anancestor rescued Mauifrom the sea, returnedhim to Earth and to hisfamily. His motheraccepted this prodigy andcalled it Maui tiki tiki aTaranga, which meant:Maui formed in thehighest bun of Taranga.

According to the legend, the best-known feat ofMaui was the creation ofthe Pacific Islands inwhich currently livePolynesians. Islands, hecaught from the bottom ofthe sea with the help of amagic hook. According tothe Maori people of NewZealand, Maui caught theSun with a noose and hitit with his invincibleweapon: the jaw of afemale ancestor.

As a result of the brutalbeating, the Sun was soweak that only could drag

on its own course, prolonging the duration ofthe day.

The people of Tonga say, that sometimes the sky isdark because Maui used apoker to raise it. WhileMaui was preparing anoven in the earth, thePoker snagged in the sky, which at that time wasmuch more lower than inthe present and with theintention of having more

space to workcomfortably, thisincredible hero justmoved the sky.

Hawaiians believe thatMaui intended to impress awoman, who wished toconquer, with this feat.Fascinated by women, hismother helped him tosucceed in countlessadventures.

    The two most popular

stories of Maui are bigcrimes committed by him.One of these stories saysthat stole from heaven acelestial chicken to get thesecret of fire that she kept.In the other story, Mauitried to defeat Hine-nui-te-po, Goddess of death, taking advantage when he

found her asleep. But hecould not get it becausethe song of birds awoke tothe goddess, who pulledthe body of this legendaryhero, until kill him.Hawaiians say blood ofMaui gave the color to theshrimp and the Rainbow.

Limalama Natural Systemis a project over ten yearsago, the goal, was to givestability, formation, structure and basis toCarlos Becerra Garcia

program, Limalamamaster. Program that wasbrought from Santa Cruz(CA), firsthand from thefounder of the system, Mr.Tino Tuiolosega.

We tried in the beginning,to reflect this idea in the

first Spanish Federation ofLimalama, that was

created at that time and wethought that it was theideal way to show the

    principles of this newprogram.

It was not easy to create it,but, with the help of

colleagues who believed inthis project, was founded

the Federation, of whichwe are currently foundingmembers, but as of todaywe do not share the samepath.

The second step, was togive maximum coverage tothe system and teachers, for it, was necessary to

structure a technical andpedagogical basis. As theprogram we received wasunprepared, It took severalyears to understand whereit was going and whatshould be taught first.Until these bases were notestablished, could not be

    teaching a Limalamaquality.

Once that the program hadstructure, we had to show

it to the world, unfortunately, who have tobe ahead of this project, opted to retire himself andlet the new generationscontinue. We are verygrateful, master Carlos.

Logically, and with theprogram in our hands, wehad to decide what would

be the best way to reachpeople and convey theentire system firsthand, sowas born the NaturalSystem LimalamaOrganization. To achievethis, we created a websitewhere you can access to allkinds of informationregarding the history ofLimalama in general.

In the website, we offer allthe information regardingLimalama system thatcurrently is being trained, which we have called SantaCruz system, honoring toall Limalama teachers whowork with the style whichstructured the teacherRigoberto Lpez, and somany others who work alsowith this style.

We have been already, more than 25 yearsworking with this systemwith great success, as webelieve it is more dynamic

and in constantlydeveloping. Master Tinoleft us principles, basesand a chain of technical tostudy, work and develop

    them within an establishedframework.

    Natural System Limalamais currently international.

We have presence invarious countries such asMexico, Spain, Englandand Germany. We are alsoaware that this system isworking in United States, and we would love tocontact with the teachers, exchange views and sharewhat for years has been acommitment and ourpassion.

    Supported by the mostprestigious organizations

around the world, ourdegrees have internationalrecognition and provideguarantee to our teachers.

    We must not forget our

Adviser and personalfriend Master Joshua StIves, who agreed tosponsor this organizationand is our goodwillAmbassador.

My name is Sandra, Ibegan to train Limalama atthe age of 6 years old, Ivealways wanted to followthe steps of my professor, and nowadays I am theinstructor of childrengroups.

    Starting this new path in

my sports career, hasallowed me to grow, learnand improve as a person, ithas also allowed me toobserve, study and look atthe childrens lifestyle inthe nowadays and the onefrom time ago.

The children used to goout to the streets to play

with their friends until late, they would enroll to everyafter school activities asmuch as they could, theymade the most of their timesocializing and gettingalong with friends, thiscaused the children had agood physicaldevelopment. Today theyjust want to be at homeplaying videogames orusing the computer, thereare less children thatpractice a sport and healthissues have arisen due tothis cause, they dontsocialize with their friendsas they used to, now they

prefer to do it throughsocial media, which makethe children worse inreading, writing andspeaking, increases schoolfailure, violence andharassment.

The practice of any martialart helps the children in

concentration, creatinghabits that help in theirstudies; respect andeducation, making themmore sympathetic toothers, creating positiveattitudes towards thesociety; confidence andself-assurance, makingthem feel capable to faceany day to day situation

    and fitness, giving their

bodies the flexibility andencouragement that willimprove their physicalcondition, reflexes andmotor-skills that favor theirdevelopment.

When an instructordevotes his time to teachthis beautiful art, the best

reward that can get fromhis students is looking atthe gradual progresstheyre getting, improvingand achieving their goals, but specially looking atthem enjoying what theyredoing.

    - DEFENSE AGAINST TWO PUNCHES

*CONCEPTS: With the right training adevastating effectiveness can be achieved

to smash bones or vital points. You canthrow a punch with the fists, inner or outerside of the hand, fingers, elbows, knees, feet, forearms, head etc.

The effect of a strike to a vital point can beachieved in two different ways:

    A. Localizing exactly wherethe vital point is, for which strength wontbe needed.

    B. Punching hard to theclosest spot to the vital point. In this way,the shockwave will affect indirectly. Thelatter is the most common in self defense.

1.- The aggressor stands in front of uswith the intention to attack us with twofront punches.

  • 8/9/2019 Revista Nsl n1 Ingles

    28/45

2.- When the aggressor throws the firstpunch, we anticipate a knitting deflection(typical deflection of Limalama against twodirect punches) and move towards hisexterior angle of 45.

3.- The displacement continues until being ina 90 angle facing the aggressor as weexecute the defense of the second punch.

4.- The arm that is used to deflect the punchstays in the position to execute the firstattack and the leg controls the aggressors

leg causing him to lose balance.

5.- We wrap his arm with our attacking arm,

Important is not whatlife gives you but whatYOU do with it...

It is FUNNY how our world transforms. Some decades ago when I startedlearning martial arts in the city where Ilive (Len, Guanajuato, MEXICO) therewere only a few martial artsassociations, these were: Shaolin KungFu, Tae Kwon Do, Karate Do, Judo,Boxing (both Boxing and Wrestling weredisciplines only for noble people Wrestling or LIMA). As years passed byand the arrival of teachers to theMexican capital we learned different

styles of Karate do, new associations ofTae kwon do were created (they stillexist, sadly because their teachers arenot inscribed, they are not even blackbelt, many of them are only poomse, nocertification or preparation at all),Capoeira also had a boom after the Only

the strongs with G.M. Marcda Cascos, and dontmakeme talk about Ninjintsu...

Schools were full and filledwith students.

Nowadays you can find aremarkable amount ofsmall groups and not soorganized schools of MMAwhere many of theteachers have NO

PREPARATION, AT ALL!Here in Mexico we call itchile de todos los moles

(pepper of every sauce, meaning that they areeverywhere to calleveryones attention).Personally, I prefer to trainand prepare myself on adaily basis, not onlyfighting Brazilian Jiu Jitsuor Muay Thai, Judo, Boxing

(English or American style)or any other martial art, butI look for the teaching of

those martial arts. Thatdistinguishing approachthat makes us differentfrom the others. As mymaster and teacher ofAmerican Kenpo said tome once:

Thereare exceptional blackbelts, but very few goodteachers. Which one areyou? Which one do youwant to become?

My master of Hwa rang do,Sabum ni Victor GarcaHernandez told me oncewhile practicing in hisoffice: The important thingof what we do here is tobecome more and moreprofessional, prepareyourself gordo (friendly way

of calling me chubby, andnot, Im not chubby, notanymore...), because thereare plenty outside ,but onlyorganization and

    preparation makes usdifferent.

The old man was right. Ithas been three decadessince I practice martial arts,Ive seen hundreds ofpartners, schools, teachers, instructors, pseudo-instructors and many other

passing by and a lot of themwere good, some wereexcellent, other just were.

    I LOVE what I want, and I

want this to become aprofessional training, andthatswhy I prepare myself. What about you?

Before going deeper into the topic, it is of my interest to mention some of the benefits of agood warm up:

Improves performance Reduces the chance of injury Improves concentration Improves coordination and balance

It is normal that when we start training something new or when we become experts, weforget about the importance of a good warm up, thatswhy I consider important to mentionthese steps:

    A. Warm up:a) Joint movementb) Rising Heart Ratec) Stretching and Elasticityd) Explosive activation exercises

    Warm up

The intention of the warm up is to rise thebodys temperature and your heart rate aswell as wake up the muscle nerves andmobilize the joints in order to prepare yourbody for the training session.

Its true that in a real situation we wonthave time to warm up, but, isnt it theobjective of training to prepare us for thesekind of situations?

Even if it is for a short period of time it isimportant to try to achieve the 4 steps ofwarm up:

    a.Join t movemen t.

A good advice for this stage is doing it inan orderly manner; in other words, carry ona sequence starting with the head to toesand vice versa. This advice will help not toforget any part of the body and at the sametime send the signs of order andconcentration to the brain. In the majorityof my classes I usually start with mystudents from the head towards the feet

(head, upper back, shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, lower back, hips, knees, ankles).

    b.Rising the h eart rate

This stage consists of increasing the bloodflow to the muscles, rising the bodystemperature and heart rate. This is possiblewhen you work the group of large muscles(chest, back, legs) with repetitivemovements. My preference here is joggingwith turns to lateral movements, liftingknees up, taking the ankles to the bottom

as jogging and raising the knees sideways.Itscommon to swap step a) with step b) oreven mixing them. We just need toconsider not doing forced movements inthis stage.

    c) Stretchin g and Elast ic i ty

In this stage is important to get the beststretching of the muscles and theligaments so the movements are as free aspossible, this is important because it will

improve your performance and will easeyour movements. Besides it is consideredto be one of the most important steps toavoid injuries. In concordance with step a) Jointmovement, it is advised to have an orderwhile you stretch. With my students Ialways consider the stretching of legs nomatter the planned training session. Anexample of a stretching sequence that wefollow is: hamstrings, quadriceps, abductors and calves.

    d. Explo sive activat ion exercises

This is the funniest part of the warm up,yes thats it! pushups, squats, jumping

jacks, jumps with knee elevation and so on.During this stage we work onstrengthening the muscles gradually. Itsimportant not to overdo in this stage sinceit is still part of the warm up. If you overdo, then you cantconsider it part of the warmup and it would become in a different stageof the training. One of the exercises that Iparticularly enjoy in this stage is asequence of: abdominals followed bypushups ending with jumping squats, keeping the same pace along all therepetitions.

The warm up is different depending thesituation, the more demanding the finalactivity is, the longer the warm up shouldbe. An advice is to have predefined warmup exercises for different situations, thiscould be really useful for unexpected timesor when you donthave much time to warm

up: tournaments, grade examinations, short training and others.

Lima Lama professors have the trainingand extensive knowledge of these steps, ifyou have any query or need advice in yourwarm up get in touch with any of them andask for further guidance.

The first weekend ofFebruary of 2014 we had theopportunity to travel to thecity of Berlin, the capital of

Germany, where the GermanDelegation of ourorganization is found andruled by Sergio RiveraHernndez.

We travelled there toevaluate and lead thechange of degree exams aswell as give a seminar to getbetter at their training and

provide tips and keys inorder to improve SantaCruzsLimalama system.

This event is the first ofmany programmed activitiesduring 2014. I must saythatwe were nervous

because it was the first timeestablishing Limalama in apermanent way in Europe(outside Spain) and

spreading this wonderfulsport through the wholecontinent.

Luckily we also counted onMauro, our representativeand direct collaboratorinside UKs organization, whose presence gave theevent more weight andmaking it a fully European

    meeting.

Therefore, we are proud toannounce that LimalamaNatural System has alreadytwo more headquarters inEurope, with their majoracademies in Berlin

(Germany) and London (UK),added to the one in Madrid(Spain) makes the biggestLimalama organization inEurope.

We cannot forget ourbrothers on the other side ofthe ocean, whose work isunquestionable and thanksto them we also havepresence in the states ofGuanajuato, Cancun,Tamaulipas, Chihuahua, etc.All of them together makebigger this great martial art.

    But letsstay focused:

We were very proud to seehow the students managedfluently and technically theSanta Cruz program, despitethe short time the schoolhas being working on it. Infact, the exams were highlytechnical for each degreeand you could feel the

commitment towardslearning. During theevaluation their facesshowed the fatigue bit by bitbut nevertheless they foundthe strength to demonstratetheir courage.

The exams continued withnormality and left us verysatisfied with the great workdisplayed by Master Sergioand his students. He even

took the exam to graduatehimself in the first degree ofblack belt.

Extremely technical andperfectionist in developingthe technics, I can say wehave more than a worthyrepresentative in theGerman country. Flawless inhis exam presentation, heshowed us how anything isattainable with hard workand good training. He is anexample for their studentsand it was an honor tograduate him.

After the graduation andlosing no time, we movedon to the first LimalamaEuropean Meeting. Thisseminar had a total duration

of 4 hours and was focusedin understanding the basicsof the Santa Cruz systemwhen training. In order todemonstrate these concepts

all the showed technics areincluded in the technicalprogramme.

We had also tworepresentatives of tworelated martial arts such asKempo and Kajukembo, thefirst is master 4th dan andthe second is black belt, great and upright peoplewho shared with us theirquestions and similaritieswith the roots of our

    discipline.

A lot of information wastreated and despite thelanguage barrier we had the

feeling that the mainprinciples were clearlytransmitted and fullyunderstood. Then thegraduations came, anintimate and ceremonial, characteristic act inLimalama. Emotion, prideand satisfaction were someof the feelings thatsurrounded us in thatmoment.

    Personally I think that this

meeting has helpedLimalama to becomeestablished and thereforeNatural System in Europe. This is just the beginning,we are confident about theyear 2014 bringing strengthto Limalama in Europe, although I already think isstrong enough.

Thanks to all people whohas made possible thisseminar and to everyonewho assisted andcollaborated. We return withnew friends, affection andthe feeling that we are rightpath.
