•An infinitive tells the meaning of the verb without naming any subject or tense.
•In English, the infinitive is to + action▫To run▫To walk
•There are three kinds of infinitives in Spanish:▫those that end in ar, ▫those that end in er ▫and those that end in ir.
What is an infinitive in English?

Gustar with Infinitives
•Just like nouns, infinitives can be used after a verb like gustar to say what you and others like to do.
•Me gusta la musica. ▫I like music.
•Me gusta cantar. ▫I like to sing.
Why is an infinitive used after gustar?
A. To tell how someone does somethingB. To tell why someone does somethingC. To tell what someone likes to do
Gustar with Infinitives
•Always use gusta (not gustan) with infinitives.
•Me gustan los deportes.▫I like sports. BUT
•Me gusta jugar al tenis. ▫I like to play tennis.
Because jugar is an infintive, we must use gusta, not gustan!
When is gustan used?
A. When the subject is pluralB. When the object the subject likes is

Activity• You will placed in groups of 4. • Each group will be given a bag full of infinitives.• Taking turns, one person will pull two infinitives out of
the bag and ask someone (anyone in the group) which activity they like to do more.
• The question will be: ▫ ¿Te gusta más ________ o _________?
• For the response: ▫ Me gusta más _________.
• Each person in the group will write this person’s response. Remember to change the me to le because you’re talking about another person. ▫ Responses will look like this: A Maria le gusta más leer
novelas. • Each person will ask four questions. • Once you have used the verbs once, place them back in
the bag.
