Why Use Surfactants?Water is the primary carrier used in all tank mix solutions. Each water droplet, containing the added ingredient, needs to penetrate the leaf in order to do an effective job. This is not an easy task when done alone because of the important factors like water tension and complex leaf structure (i.e., hairs, wax and cuticle). Also, if the active ingredient does not penetrate in a timely manner, environmental factors like the sun (photodegradation) and untimely rain can render it useless.

By adding nonionic surfactants, water tension is greatly reduced and tough-to-penetrate leaf surfaces become no match. We carry several different surfactants, but the most popular are R-11® and SYL-TAC®. R-11 has a neutral pH and contains activators which give it the capacity to lift the waxy platelets and gain access to the hydrophilic water channels in the leaf. SYL-TAC is nonionic, but contains organosilicone for superior wetting and penetrating ability. SYL-TAC is highly recommended for tough-to-kill perennials.

The water droplet without a surfactant sits on the leaf hairs or plant surface with little contact, reducing spray activity. The surfactant reduces surface tension, allowing the droplet to spread over the leaf and penetrate the hairy surfaces. This provides broader leaf contact and increased spray activity.

WHY NOT USE DISH SOAP? Dish soap can alter your solution’s pH, which can greatly affect its efficacy. Also, soap can provide some spreading qualities but will do little to aid in penetration, leaving the majority of your solution exposed on the leaf surface.

Canada ThistleCanada Thistle is a perennial plant with extensive spreading roots that rapidly form dense colonies. Canada Thistle can also spread by seeds; each shoot can produce more than 100 seeds. Plants grow one to four feet tall and have spiny, lance-shaped leaves. Purple, lavender or sometimes

KnapweedMost of the knapweed in our area will be either Spotted Knapweed (generally purple flowers) or Diffuse Knapweed (generally white flowers). Spotted Knapweed is listed as an annual weed (comes from seeds each year), but will usually act like a short-lived perennial weed. Spotted Knapweed is biennial, which means the first year of its life it will grow a rosette of leaves and the second year it will bloom. In our climate, however, Spotted Knapweed will grow and produce flowers year after year.

Control is relatively easy to attain and several products will work well. The best application timing is spring to early summer on rosettes OR fall after the rains and green-up of the knapweed. The plant should be actively growing. Milestone is an excellent choice for controlling knapweed.

HERBICIDES


Imidacloprid Imidacloprid is a systemic and foliar insecticide. Applied as a systemic insecticide, imidacloprid is taken up by the roots and moved throughout the plant protecting new growth as it appears. Controls pests like aphids, adelgids, elm leaf beetles, Japanese beetles, leafminers, scale insects, whiteflies and more. Has a long residual, making it possible to apply treatments from late fall to early spring.

The best time to apply in this area is early September. This gives the tree time to take the insecticide into its system before going dormant in the winter. When spring arrives, all of the new growth will be protected!

HOW TO APPLY (drenching): You will need to determine the diameter of the tree trunk at 4 to 5 feet above the ground. The most accurate way is to purchase the Diameter Pro available at Wilbur-Ellis Company. If you don’t have one, do the following to determine the tree trunk diameter: Standing

next to the tree, measure the circumference in inches using this simple calculation: Circumference (inches) X 0.31831 = diameter (inches)

Determine the amount of insecticide you will need for the tree and mix in a bucket with required water. Slowly pour mixture around the base of the tree allowing it to soak in. You want to be far enough from the trunk so that the roots will absorb the mixture. Do not go beyond the drip line. Over the next week, water in with a sprinkler for 10-15 minutes once daily to achieve maximum root uptake. If you don’t have a way to water in, apply before a heavy rainfall.

LADA® 2F drench rate: 1-2 ounces of product will treat 10 inches of tree diameter. (At the 1-ounce rate, a 32-ounce bottle will treat 320 inches of tree diameter.)

LADA 2F foliar rate: 2 ounces per 100 gallons of water.

Bee Safety

Neonicotinoid insecticides are highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment or residues on the foliage of blooming crops or weeds. Do not apply this product or allow it to drift to blooming crops or weeds if bees are visiting the treatment area. Avoid applying neonicotinoid insecticides by soil drench or tree injection methods to plants known to attract bees. These methods may contaminate nectar and pollen for up to several years after the insecticide is applied.
