RESPONSIBILITY

December 2019 Dear Mount Royal Families, As we prepare for 2020, let’s not forget the year of 2019. Let us be thankful for the wonder-ful things we have in our lives. Let us care for those in need. Let us cherish memories that made us laugh and cry. Let us be Magnificent, Unique, Strong, Talented, Ambitious, Non-judgmental and Grateful. Let there be PEACE. November was a month to remember. We paid tribute to those who fought for our country during our Remembrance Day Assembly. Peel Board celebrated Hindu and Indigenous Heritage Month. Seva Food Bank was very appreciative of our Mount Royal food donations and we humbly thank our community for their generosity. In addition to our generous donations, the MUSTANGS of Mount Royal supported the Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week in November by Choosing Action to Stop Hate. Students and Staff created STOP Signs to share their thoughts with the whole school. Through this, voices were unsilenced and heard from everyone. As the year draws to a close, our school year remains in full steam. We continue to provide your son or daughter with a rich educational experience that will lay the foundation for great things to come. Who and what they are will be enhanced by the experience they have at Mount Royal. We ARE a school of empowered modern learners! This means that we endeavour to pro-vide your son or daughter with opportunities to be a co-facilitator in class. It means that students will have the opportunity to work in small groups focused on inquiry—based learning. It means that as a 21st century learner, he or she will develop fluency in communication using digital tools. Thank you staff at Mount Royal for providing our students with rich and authentic experi-ences every day. Through our United Way Silent Auction, we raised over $500.00 to strengthen the cornerstones for a quality of life: education, financial stability and health. We look forward to having everyone join us on Family Games Night on December 12th. We will come together and connect through authentic face to face interactions. As of January 2020, we will have Pizza Days every Wednesday. Please log into your Cashless account to purchase Pizza for the additional dates. Girls' and Boys' Volleyball Teams

On November 25th and 26th, our Girls’ and Boys’ Volleyball Teams participated in the tournaments held at Southfields Public School. It was a great opportunity for our teams to demonstrate the skills and teamwork they developed over the last few months. Throughout that time, they have shown their commitment to mastering new skills and to each other. They represented our school with dignity and honour, were gracious with their competitors, and learned valuable lessons about themselves that will serve them well in the years to come. We are so proud of you all!

Traffic safety in our community

Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and parents safe while commuting to and from school. Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school.

Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Adhere to the posted speed limits on any surrounding streets used by students on their way to and from school.

Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before driv-ing past them. When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a supervised area that is designed to keep students safe. Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into traffic. Do not take shortcuts over curbs.

Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Say goodbye to your child before you park at the curb to let your child out of your car.

During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb.

Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot and treat staff, students, volunteers, passengers and other drivers with respect. Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to school. This will give you time to talk to your children about their day, review new vocabulary words, math concepts, etc. Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersection or crosswalk. They should never “jaywalk” by crossing in the middle of the street. Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet, and follow all traffic laws. They should only cross the street at a crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle of the road.

Help your family stay warm this winter Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying comfortable and preventing hypother-mia when working or playing outdoors: Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head. Children should keep an extra hat at school. Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body. Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof boots. If the boots have liners, carry an extra pair to replace damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Invest in thick socks to keep your feet warm. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to school, on outings, etc. Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and pace yourself when doing vigorous activities.

Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit are less susceptible to hypothermia. If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment to a cold one. Excessive sweating caused from an extreme change in temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia. Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins. A balanced diet will also help keep you warm and healthy in the winter. If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness) carry emergency supplies.

Library Learning Commons News and Notes

SHOUT OUT FOR SEWING MENTORS

The Denise Wild Sewing Studio workshops for our kindergarten to grade eight students were a huge hit. Every child participated and every child successfully finished their sewing projects with confidence instilled by a “YES, I CAN!” growth mindset.

Stereotypes about people who sew were crushed as students learned to sew and create alongside NFL and CFL football champions.

Upon completion of the week long sewing event, Denise Wild Sew-ing Studios presented our school with two new, child friendly, sewing ma-chines. This brings the total number of sewing machines in our Library Learning Commons maker space to five!

Next steps to ensure Mount Royal Mustangs have opportunities to hone their newly acquired appreciation and budding sewing skills are to put all five of our machines to work. To this end, Mrs. Roberts and Ms. Dashawetz are sending a hearty shout out for anyone who would like to volunteer in our maker space teaching students to sew.

Requirements to volunteer are a love of sewing, a willingness to teach children and a current vulnerable records check.

Please contact the school for more information, and/or a tour of our maker space. Together let’s make great things happen for our school community.

The Attitude of Gratitude From the PDSB Mental Health Resource Team

What is Gratitude?

Gratitude is all about focusing on what’s good in your life. It is paying attention to the things that we can sometimes take for granted, especially when we are feeling stressed. There are many different words that can describe feelings of gratitude, including feeling thankful, lucky, or fortunate. An attitude of gratitude involves actively choosing to acknowledge and appreciate the things you are thankful for in life. By making a focused effort to reflect on the posi-tive parts of your day, the stressors you face can begin to feel a little less overwhelming.

Why Does Gratitude Matter? Practicing an attitude of gratitude can make a BIG difference on your overall outlook on life. Gratitude has been shown to BOOST both physical and mental health outcomes by helping people to:

Improve their self-worth and esteem

Balance their negative emotions

Experience other positive emotions linked with gratitude (e.g., happiness)

Build better relationships with others

Give Gratitude A Go

Feel like an attitude of gratitude could benefit your family? Here are a few suggestions to get you started! 1. Keep a Journal: Each family member should write down three things they are thankful for each day (big or small). As a family, make a little time each week to review some of the entries. When an individual family member feels stressed or overwhelmed, encourage them to reflect on their recent journal entries. 2. Create a Photo Album: Take photos of things that make you and your family happy. Regularly add the photos to an album. Schedule a little relaxation time each week to review your entries. 3. Fill a Jar: Reflect on the things you and your family members are grateful for at the end of each day. For each reflection, add a marble to a jar to symbolize your gratitude. Monitor how long it takes to fill the jar. 4. Pay It Forward: Put together a gratitude box for someone else...why not one for each family member? On col-ourful pieces of paper, write several entries to let the person know what you appreciate about them. Try: ‘Thank you for…’ or ‘I love you because….’ Once the box is complete, wrap it and present it as a gift. 5. Say Thank You: As often as you can! Make a concerted effort to say thank you to other people. By thanking oth-ers, you will begin to notice things that you appreciate in the moment. Remember! Like any skill, gratitude is one that needs to be practiced. Anyone who spends time with children and youth knows that they are are mimics and they learn by watching how we deal with life's stresses and opportunities. By mindfully modelling gratitude and bringing our children and youth into this practice, we are promoting their healthy develop-ment for life! HEALTH UPDATES

Report your child’s immunizations to the Region of Peel online

When registering for school for the first time, parents and guardians are required to provide up-to-date immunization infor-

mation for their children. This includes registering for kindergarten.

You can update your child’s immunizations online. The online immunization tool allows you to attach a photo of the immuniza-

tion record. When reporting online, an Ontario Health Card is required.

Report immunizations online at: www.peelregion.ca/immunize

After you report your immunizations online you will be given a reference number. Keep this number for your records. You will

need to give this number to your child’s school when registering.

If you do not have online access or your child does not have an Ontario Health Card, take a copy of the immunization record to

the school. Make sure your child’s name and date of birth are visible on the record.

Call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700 if your child does not have an immunization record or if you have any questions about

immunization exemptions.

Peel Public Health shares tips to help prevent the flu It’s flu season and we want to make sure students stay as healthy as possible this year! Influenza (flu) spreads easily from one person to another and Peel Public Health has some tips to help reduce the risk of catching the flu and spreading it:

Get your annual flu shot: The flu shot is your best defence against the flu. There are many locations across Peel where

you can get your flu shots:

Family Doctors’ offices

Walk-in clinics

Pharmacies

Peel flu clinics

Keep children home when they’re sick: If your child develops flu-like signs and symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, body

aches, headache, chills and fatigue), keep them home from school. Contact your health care provider if symptoms are se-

vere.

Practice good hygiene: Help your child get into the habit of covering their nose and mouth with a tissue when they

cough or sneeze and throw tissues in the trash. Cough or sneeze into a sleeve or elbow, if they don’t have a tissue. They

should also avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth. This is how germs are spread.

Wash your hands: Encourage your child to wash their hands often with soap and water or use hand sanitizer, especially

after they cough or sneeze.

For more information, call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700 or visit www.peelregion.ca/flu.

Winter bus safety

The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your child safe throughout the winter months. - Allow extra time to get to your bus stop. - Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late evening. - Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is snow and ice. - Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces. - Dress properly—winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm. - Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus. - Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street. - Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt. On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical problems. Talk to your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions: When possible, wait with your child for the bus. - Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach you or another trusted adult. - Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child about what a "safe" stranger is. - Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system so your child has someone to wait with for the bus.
