Education Week Open Day and Grand Friends Day Our Education Week Open Day will be held on Tuesday 7

The program will include a parent assembly from 9.45am with various items showcasing the performing arts and public speaking, art show tours, open classrooms, Scholastic Book Fair and picnic lunch. We are looking forward to sharing the day with you.

New Out School Hours Care (OSHC) Provider This year Drummoyne and St Marks schools have participated in a process to evaluate tenders for the provision of before and after school care for the next 5 years. Our current service is being provided by Camp Australia.

The process is a condition of the Department of Education’s procurement guidelines and involved an open state-wide tender process in which we received a large number of applications from leading OSHC providers.

Applicants were required to address mandatory compliance requirements, submit their session fee rates and describe the attributes and quality of their service. An evaluation of the applications and interview of three short-listed applicants completed the process to seek the most qualified, experienced and capable companies that would be a good fit for our school community.

The panel included the School Principals, Parent and Admin representatives and Department of Education Asset Management personnel. Advice was also sought from the Catholic Education Office.

The panel were unanimous in recommending Gowrie New South Wales as the new OSHC provider and the current shared arrangement for Drummoyne and St Marks schools will continue.

Gowrie NSW has provided before and after school care for families for 75 years with a focus on inclusive, values-based practices, research and contemporary education.

The schools would like to thank Camp Australia for the service they have provided over the past six years and wish them well for the future.

A transition phase will take place during Term 3 with Camp Australia continuing to provide the OSHC service until the start of Term 4 when Gowie NSW will commence.

New Airconditioning On Monday next week, a crane will be used to install new aircon units at the back of the school hall. To do this, the crane will be positioned close to the cricket nets in South Street. This area will not be accessible during this time. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Staff Development Day On Monday 23

professional learning related to teaching Mathematics, student and staff wellbeing, the PBL program, and grade and stage planning for Term 3. Students will return to school on Tuesday 24

th July.

Differentiated Learning At our school, and no doubt every school, the long term goal is for every student to experience a sense of success, growth, achievement, wellbeing and belonging. For this to occur, it may mean that teachers may do things differently, especially to the way we ourselves were taught. In the so called, ‘old days’, a one size fits all approach was applied to students’ learning. Teachers now strongly support a differentiated approach in their learning environments.

So what is differentiation? Differentiation is central to meeting the varied needs of all learners. Our students bring to school a diverse range of backgrounds and learning experiences. Today’s teachers have become increasingly skilled at identifying individual learning characteristics in order to effectively differentiate learning experiences for all students. In order to maximise the potential of our students, teachers now endeavour to cater for the learning needs of every student. It is based on understanding what students’ know and can do, what they need to learn next and how best to teach them.

So what can differentiation look like in my child’s classroom? Teachers effectively differentiate by;

ensuring teaching, learning and assessment is planned around the syllabus with clear, shared learning intentions and success criteria

using appropriate data and information to inform planning

using flexible learning environments and groupings which are responsive to student needs

altering the pace and manner of delivery in response to immediate and reflective student feedback

selecting and modifying resources in response to student needs

setting appropriate learning goals according to student needs and readiness

focusing on high intellectual quality and significance making high expectations explicit for all student learning

Differentiation is not....

a different lesson for each student each day

assigning more work at the same level to students who have demonstrated achievement

expecting all students to learn the same content at the same rate and time

What does differentiation aim to achieve? Differentiated instruction aims to;

improve learning outcomes

inspire a love of learning

increase engagement

increase self-awareness

help students learn more efficiently and with deeper understanding

I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable break if work commitments allow and look forward to a new term full of many new opportunities for our students and families to enjoy at DPS.

black paint across the page using straws to create a winter tree effect. They also wrote poems to describe the winter.

Professional Learning Update Our Community Language teachers attended a Language K-10 Syllabus Workshop this week to familiarise themselves with the new syllabus. They learnt about the structure of the new K-10 language syllabuses, focusing on new elements of the syllabuses and worked with colleagues to understand the implications for planning and assessment. As we conclude this term and prepare for a new term of learning we would like to remind parents to please pass on information which will assist our teachers to further understand your child and their individual needs. Reports from medical practioners, occupational therapists and psychologists are some examples where teachers can accommodate specific recommendations and enable learning adjustments to occur. Reports can be sent in a sealed envelope addressed to the class teacher (or other relevant person of contact) who will then secure them in your child's learning support file where they are accessed by class teachers, learning and support teachers and school executive. KINDIE EXCURSION

WRITEON COMPETITION

WriteOn is an annual writing competition open to all NSW primary students in Years 1 to 6. It can be used as a whole-class teaching activity or as an individual project. The competition supports the learning described in the NSW English K–10 Syllabus. WriteOn provides students with the opportunity to become published authors. Outstanding entries are published in the Best of WriteOn anthology.

This year students in Years 1 to 6 composed an imaginative text up to 500 words in length using this image as a stimulus.

Students were given the option to respond to the image in the form of a narrative or letter. As such, Tenny from 2M and

Ayla from 2T were chosen to represent Stage 1, Ellen from 3P was

chosen to represent Stage 2 and Abigail from 6C was chosen to represent Stage 3. Good luck to these students. I hope you enjoy their amazing texts. Michelle O'Dowd Assistant Principal

The Angry Old Man Once upon a time two cheeky boys snuck out of their house in the morning while everyone was asleep.

When they were walking along a street they suddenly came across an opening in the fence. So they decided to jump through it to see what was inside. There was a big area of grass and stairs leading into a small, wooden house.

They started to have a big run around and while they were running one of them bumped into an old, medal shed and it made a very loud sound. After a while an angry old man came out of the house and got them into big trouble. He asked them what their names were and then the oldest one shyly said “my name is Alexander” and the youngest one said “my name is Bob”.

After that the old man took them inside and came outside and locked the door. Alexander and Bob were trapped inside for two whole days!

Meanwhile Alexander and Bob’s mum and dad were really worried.

Finally their mum and dad found the opening in the fence and they jumped through it and they saw their children through an open window.

Then the two boys found a spare key and handed it to their parents and they unlocked the door and now they are safely at home with their mum and dad. Tennyson Eide 2M

The Two Scared Boys In 1009, there were two boys. They were very poor and didn’t have much they could do, except explore. There was an old house around the corner where they lived. Sorry for not introducing their names, but their names are Josh and Sam.

As I was saying before, Josh and Sam, are very poor and can’t do much. So they went to the old house and Josh said “Look Sam, there’s a big gap through the fence. Let’s go through it and have a quick peep!” “No! Don’t, it’s an abandoned house and a thief could be in there!” screamed Sam. “Sam! I have always wanted to go in there but Mum said no.” pleaded Josh. “Oh, alright. As long as we leave in a hour.” said Sam looking very disappointed.

“Shadow!” screamed Sam. “Quick hide.” whispered Josh. “Behind this chair. “Quick.” “Alright.” Whispered Sam.

So they went in and found some very little objects and some scattered glass. “Be careful!” screamed Sam. “Are you a scaredy cat.” asked Josh. “Of-of course not.” mumbled Sam, with his teeth clattering.

“Thief.” said Sam quietly. “Who’s in my house.” screamed the thief.

“Quick, ruuuuuuuuun!” screamed Josh. “Be quiet.” whispered Sam loudly.

The next day was Monday and they had been trapped in there for a day. “What shall we do now?” asked Sam who had just woken up.

The next day their Mum and Dad came looking very worried. “Look, Mum and Dad are here.” whispered Josh.

They ran to their Mum and Dad and were so happy. They had a hot chocolate and lived happily ever after. THE END

Through the Fence “Slow coach,” chanted Jack. “No you are,” replied Dick. “Come on let’s get ready.” The two children rushed up the stairs, got ready and packed. Jack and Dick reached the fence of Mrs Fillpot’s garden.

Mrs Fillpot was a cranky old lady who hated children. She had long grey hair which she pulled back into a tight bun early every morning. Jack crawled through the gap in the fence of Mrs Fillpot’s garden. “Ouch!” cried Jack. “Are you ok?” questioned Dick. “NOOO!” wailed Jack.

Jack was a brave nine-year-old boy. He had dark brown hair and loved the colour green. This boy had a great sense of humour but right now, right now at this troubled moment he was nothing like the cheerful happy person he was 10 minutes ago. Jack bent double with pain but kept walking.

He had got a splinter in his back from crawling through the fence. But as he walked the pain soon subsided and the two were able to walk normally. Dick found the perfect place to lay their tent. Suddenly they heard a voice. Oh no, it was the voice of Mrs Fillpot. She murmured, “I am going to see what that strange noise is.”

The two petrified children hid behind a tree. But too late! Mrs Fillpot had seen a flash of red and she turned, then raced. “Oh no! We are done for!” whispered Dick. Then, to his horror he saw a wrinkly, old hand reach out and grab the back of Jack’s red shirt. “You’ve got an enormous splinter in your back young man,” Mrs Fillpot said, in a soft, kindly voice.” ‘Come with me and I’ll get that nasty splinter out of your back,” she said.

Mrs Fillpot turned out to be a kind old lady who loved children - the complete opposite of what they had heard from their best friend Harry Buckman.

The kindly woman offered them some biscuits and milk and a relaxing chat. She lead the way to her lounge room. The room was filled with puffy armchairs. Mrs Fillpot begged them to sit down. So they both found the most comfortable looking armchairs. The moment Dick sat in his cosy armchair he thought he would go to sleep and sure enough in what seemed to be one second he fell into a deep slumber. Ellen Gadsby 3P

Dear Jonathan, Do you remember the good old days, when we were carefree and happy? Look at the picture I sent. We broke the fence, just so we could see each other, even though we got in huge trouble. We did everything together. 1956, one of the best years of my life.

Then came 1959, our sweet 16. Everyone was at our party, including the new girl. I bet you never forgot Brooke. A sweet, angelic brunette with hazel green eyes. We fell in love at once, yes, both of us. She was charming with a melodic voice and everyone loved her. I asked her out, and so did you. That’s when we turned bitter and jealous. I thought I was a better person so I should date her. Since we are alike in so many ways, you thought so too. Unfortunately, Brooke’s response made it worse. She said that she couldn’t choose between us, so we would have a competition.

Intelligence was the first. We had to sit a test. Everytime we got incorrect answers, we would lose points. This time, we lost about 25. I still remember tripping you countless times and dacking you. These are horrible memories which I want to forget.

There was another event, but to us, it was about hurting each other. I put embarrassing photos of you around the school and got buckets of slime to fall on your head. I was pleased that you had to get an ice-pack for that, but now I feel disgusted and appalled. After that, it was tripping you on a skateboard! You grazed your elbows and knees pretty badly when I dared you to wear no protection, except a helmet. I did many other things, but worst was running you over with a car. I felt happy but slightly guilty. It was as if a monster had taken over my mind and soul.

I won all the rounds. But, I had a colossal hole in my life, even though I gained Brooke. We married 10 years ago. Then, last year, I found out that she was working for a secret organisation of women who wanted men to focus all their time on their wives, not friends. I was horrified. I realised SHE was the person that made me bitter and angry. The last 17 years of my life, a lie. I collapsed on the spot.

I told the women that I wouldn’t tell the government if they stopped their organisation. It was a deal. Now looking at this photo, I realise that my life would’ve been better with you, not torn away from you. I’m overwhelmed with emotion, and am writing now, hoping you will get better. I know these memories have overwhelmed you too, but 100 times more. I’m begging you to get better and come back into my life. This is all my fault. If you die, know that I’ve always loved you like a brother and this can never change.

LIBRARY NEWS

We have almost completed our re-arrangement of the fiction and non-fiction collections; this will enable students whose learning involves both books and computers to more easily access both. Students visiting the library this week seem to be able to find their fiction books more easily also!

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2018 The school holidays are a good time to read for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. The Challenge finishes for students on 31 August which is the Friday of Term 3, Week 6. So far 90 students in Years 3 to 6 have completed their Challenge; congratulations to all of those students. Students can check if they are eligible for a Gold Award this year by logging in to their Premier’s Reading Challenge reading record and opening the tab marked ‘information’

Book Fair is Coming…

The Scholastic Book Fair will arrive at our school on Monday 6 August and be open for perusing and purchasing from Tuesday 7

th to Friday 10

th of August.

Some items will be extremely popular (I am just not sure which ones yet!) and may be able to be ordered if we run out. Previously, most books could be re-ordered, however, pens, pencils and posters could not. If you would like your child to purchase from the Book Fair you may either give them cash or complete the payment option on a wish list or leaflet. Please remember to bring your own bags if you are intending to purchase a few items. There will be a raffle ticket given to each purchaser of a book. Prizes will be book vouchers and will be drawn at the end of the day on Tuesday and Wednesday to

enable the winners to choose their prizes before the fair is packed up.

Scholastic Book Club Issue #5 It is likely that the brochures for Issue #5 will arrive the week prior to the Book Fair. Brochures will be displayed on the white rack outside the internal entry to the library, however, class teachers will not be given a class set of brochures unless they specifically request them.

INDIGENOUS LITERACY DAY

BOOK SWAP

On the Wednesday 5 September Drummoyne Public School SRC fundraising group will be holding a book swap to fundraise for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Fundraising for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation will help purchase books for Indigenous children who don’t know how to read. The book swap is a great opportunity for children in all years to swap a book of their own with a book they haven’t read before.

The book swap will be held in the hall and will last for 3 days. Your child will be aware when it is and what to do. All students are encouraged to be involved in this activity to promote reading and support the foundation. We ask that your child brings a gold coin donation, as well as a book that they are willing to swap with another student. The aim of this is that students who bring a book to swap will end up swapping with someone in their stage and have a different book to enjoy reading.

The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, and raise much-needed funds for remote communities. This year they hope to raise $300,000 to buy 30,000 new books for remote Indigenous communities. By Marah Tryphon (SRC Fundraising group)

2019 Kindergarten Places Now Limited Applications are now being finalised for Kindergarten 2019. If your child turns 5 before July 31, 2019 they are eligible to start school next year. We would appreciate if our local area enrolments would submit their applications as soon as possible. This will allow us to determine if we have any out of area places available. Please let your friends and neighbours know that the process for enrolment next year is well underway.

Donation request If you have any children’s underwear or socks in good condition, that your child no longer needs, please donate them to the office to be used when children have toileting accidents or fall in puddles and need to be changed. Many thanks

Donations for Toy Stall and Book Stall: This year we will be requesting donations for the toy stall and book stall to be made on Saturday 25th August only. This is the day before the Fete. Trestle tables will be set up within the school to receive your donations. Times for drop-off are to be advised. This change to the way donations are received (compared with past years) is to increase efficiency and reduce the costs of storing donations on site, without reducing the fun of having these very much loved Fete stalls! Again, as we get closer to the date, more details will be provided. Everything old is new again.

Over 2,000 years ago Socrates reminded his Greek compatriots, “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” Socrates was talking about the development of what we now call emotional intelligence.

Current day muse Dr. Marc Brackett director of the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence is more expansive. He says, “Emotions matter as they drive learning, decision-making, creativity, relationships, and health.”

Emotions are messy. They can be loud. They can be hidden. They so often interrupt our well-organised schedules. “What do you mean you’re sad? We’re off to watch a movie. It’s a happy time!” Emotions are hard to control and difficult to see. Like slippery eels swimming in a dam, you know that they are down there somewhere but it’s hard to figure just what they are doing.

So where do we start exploring the alien landscape, the new frontier of parenting? Here are five ideas to help you explore the alien landscape of kids’ emotions, the new frontier of parenting:

1. View emotions through the pleasantness lens.

We often place value judgements on emotions by saying some emotions are good or positive (happy, motivated, energised) while some are bad or negative (sad, worried, sullen). Avoid passing judgement in such ways. Recognise that emotions are pleasant or unpleasant and that all emotions are acceptable, whereas some behaviours (such as hurting someone when you are angry) are unacceptable.

2. Set your antennae to pick up emotion.

Ever have a child come home from school and misbehave in a way that is out of character? If so, did you focus on the behaviour or did you try to detect the emotion behind the behaviour? The default mechanism for many adults is to respond to children’s behaviour rather than stand back and take notice of what may be going on beneath the surface. We respond to aggressive behaviour and sometimes fail to notice the anger seething below. Stop automatically reacting to behaviour and start noticing the emotion that may be driving the behaviour. You still need to manage poor behaviour but responding in this way may give you a valuable insight into your child’s inner world.

3. Validate kids’ emotions.

Children and teenagers who are upset or experience extreme emotions require to understanding and validation.

You don’t necessarily have to necessarily fix the situation, but it is important that your child knows that understand he is upset. Convey your empathy with statements such as, “Ahh, I see your upset that your brother….” ; “ Yes, it’s understandable to be annoyed……”; and “I can see that you are angry about this….”

4. Help your kids recognise, then regulate emotions.

Kids, like adults, need to recognise their feelings before they can regulate their emotional state. Emotional recognition is a complex process that takes practice. Learning to recognise your feelings is a continuous process that’s best started when young, before the ups and downs of adolescence becomes a reality. Cue kids to their emotions by reflecting back to them how they maybe feeling rather than shutting them down or ignoring them. E.g.”It seems that pretty angry right now. Could I be right?”

5. Build your child’s vocabulary of feeling words.

Emotionally smart kids generally have a wide vocabulary, which means they are better placed to shift their moods when required. Reflect back as accurately as possible how your child or young person may be feeling. The differences between emotions such as anxious, tense, nervous, worried and overwrought maybe small but they are important in terms of giving kids some wiggle room to shift their feelings.

Emotional intelligence is best learned when it becomes part of your family’s culture, or way of doing things. Impacting on family culture is the best way of creating inter-generational change. You’ll know you’ve had generational impact when your children as adults identify you as the person who trained them in the skills of emotional intelligence. How cool would that be!

Year 3 Rocks Walking Tour

Dear Year 3 Parents and Caregivers, Rationale: During our History lessons, year 3 students have been learning about how Sydney and our community have changed over time. Therefore, as a culmination to this unit of learning, students will be participating in a 90 minute guided walking tour with The Rocks Walking Tours, starting at Clocktower Square. Venue: The Rocks, Sydney Date: Tuesday 31 July Time: Students will depart from school at 9:30am and will return to school at approximately 2.00pm. Travel will be by a chartered seat-belted bus. Students must arrive at school on time in order to depart at the scheduled time! What to bring: Students should wear winter school uniform, school hat and school shoes. Please bring recess, lunch and water in an excursion bag. Cost: The cost of the excursion, which includes seat-belted coach fare and cost of the walking tour, is $25.00 per student. On the day of the excursion, if your child is unable to attend due to sickness, please phone the office as soon as possible in the morning on 9181 2636. 2018 Narrabeen Recreation Camp – Year 4

Dear Parent/Caregiver, RATIONALE: The overnight excursion for Year 4 is organised to:
