Plant Propagating Weekend Thank you to all the families who gave their time on the weekend to propagate plants in preparation for the Manly West Kitchen Garden Stall. A special thank you to Jo Holley for coordinating the day and to Angie Penn and Jo Holley for leading plant propagating procedures. Please see details on page 7. Project Penguin On Monday, Year 4 students ventured out to Little Manly and Collins Flat to

learn about the habitat of Little Penguins. Students met their high school mentors who through Project Penguin will guide their creation of a product to demonstrate their understanding and promote the conservation of the Little Penguin colonies of Sydney Harbour. Waste Audit Today, Angie Penn, Beth Dowdle and a team from the Coastal Environment

Centre conducted a Waste Audit with students from Year 3 and 4. Year 5 students under the guidance of Science Teacher Mrs Aimee Fairgray made observational notes and collected data. Students will report to the student body and as a result of the audit, we hope to improve waste as a school.

Thank you Mr Perks Behind many school events and daily proceedings is the support of Mr Phil Perks, our General Assistant. I would like to personally acknowledge Mr Perks for his support in my role as Deputy

Principal/Relieving Principal. His knowledge of the school gained in 18 years of service is invaluable and often called upon. I would also like to thank Mr Perks on behalf of the school. During scheduled vacation periods, Mr Perks works for part of this time while students and staff are on holiday. Recently, Mr Perks gave his holiday, often working beyond his regular hours to support the installation of the new BASC demountable. Thank you Mr Perks. Lockdown As notified on Monday, there was a general threat in the area and as a precautionary measure we conducted

a Lockdown. At no point was any child in danger. Children may have seen the police search helicopter in neighbouring suburbs and heard a police car siren pass the school as well as our school Lockdown bell. Each year we conduct safety drills, both Emergency Evacuations and Lockdowns to ensure staff and students are aware of safety procedures. Students follow staff instruction, move to specified areas and are kept in a calm and safe environment. Whether a drill or a real situation, children will always have questions. Just as parents would do, our role is to listen to concerns and assure students that they are safe. If your child has ongoing

concerns, we have a school counsellor available.

Kindergarten 2020 Information Morning Parents of prospective 2020 Kindergarten students are invited to attend an information morning on Tuesday 21st May from 9:45 to 11:00am in the school hall. See details on page 6. The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 14th-16th May, 2019. We ask that students attend on time so that there are minimal interruptions. It is best for students to eat a healthy breakfast and be well rested in readiness.

A “catch-up” day will be held on Friday 17th May for students who missed a test or were absent on a test day.

SRC Gold Coin Donation Mufti Day to Help Our Farmers - Manly West Monday 13th May Public schools were invited to fundraise for drought-affected communities by joining a national mufti

day today, Wednesday 8th May, as part of The Adopt a Farmer campaign which aims to raise $800,000 with all proceeds going to farmers. Due to school commitments, Manly West will hold a mufti day on Monday 13th May. Students may wear mufti (play clothes) making sure they wear enclosed shoes. There is not an

expectation that students come dressed as farmers. It would be appreciated if students could make a gold coin donation for this very worthwhile cause. Walk to School Safely Day – Friday 17th May Now in its 20th year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the

Environment. The event will be held throughout Australia on Friday 17th May 2019. All information can be found at: walk.com.au The objectives of WSTSD are: To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.

To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.

To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.

To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.

To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to

change as children become adults.

To promote the use of public transport.

To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.

Year 5 Opportunity Class 2020 — Applications Close Friday 17th May

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 31st July 2019. If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2020, you will need to apply online.

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from Tuesday 30th April 2019 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 Applications close on Friday 17th May 2019. You must apply by the due date. Stage 2 Aboriginal Heritage Officer Visit Yesterday, Karen Smith who is an Education Officer at the Aboriginal Heritage Office visited Manly West to

present to Stage 2 as part of their History unit. The Aboriginal Heritage Office (AHO) is a joint initiative between six local Councils, including your local Council, to protect local Aboriginal heritage sites. The creation of an Education Program was part of the vision of the original Memorandum of Understanding that was signed back in 1999 when the partnership of Councils was entered into. The students developed their knowledge of local Aboriginal cultural and heritage.

Safety First at Boyle St

There have been a number of reports from parents of irresponsible and unsafe practice at the ‘Kiss and Drop’ at Boyle St—including reversing onto the pedestrian crossing, double parking, and allowing children to disembark in the middle of the road. We understand we are all time poor, however, we would like to remind everyone that safety of our students is our priority.

Come and see the latest displays in the library made by Year 1, Year 2 and 5J! You can’t miss Year 1’s Friendship Garden filled with words on how to be a wonderful friend. Year 2 made

colourful koi kites whilst learning about Children’s Day in Japan. Creative Year 5 responded to Rhyme Cordial by Antonia Pesenti with their own clever rhymes and illustrations.

Huge congratulations to the winners of the K -2 Library Bag Contest for Term 1! The very responsible and aspiring readers were KRed, 1M and 2C. The competition was fierce but all students who borrow and read are the real winners! Which classes will win for Term 2? Bring your library bags to help your class be the winning one!

Kitchen Garden News

In the Kitchen Garden this week…

Waste Audit! Today, Wednesday 8th May, Year 3 and 4 students participated in our first Manly West Waste Audit. Students helped sort and categorise the waste from the school bins so that we could see what our rubbish consisted of, where it came from, and looked at the impact it has on our environment. All other years visited the audit during the day to observe, take photos and record the results. Year 5 and 6 will analyse the results and present at the assemblies and in the school newsletter at a future date. Following on from the waste audit we

will be looking at how we can reduce our waste and recycle more at Manly West. Anzac Day Last week Year 3 learnt the significance of rosemary in Anzac Day commemorations. They also helped bottle our first crop of olives - thanks very much to Anna Coad for pickling them for us! Volunteers

Thank you so much to Jo Holley and Margaret Pratt who came and helped water the garden and turn the compost over the holidays.

Thankyou so much to the fantastic group of parents and students who came to help at our plant propagating afternoon on Saturday, lead by Jo Holley. These plants are being looked after by a number of families until they will be for sale at the carnival in September.

School Compost Bins If you are bringing kitchen scraps from home to add to the school compost bins, please be aware you must be signed up on the roster for Term 2. Chess League - there’s a spare spot on the Manly West team

The NSW Chess League begins this Friday after school and there is a spare spot on the Manly West team. If you have a child who is in Year 2 or older, is a keen chess player and they would like to play one competitive chess game per week (every Friday after school in Term 2 finishing no later than 5pm), then could you please email the school. You will not be required to drive your child to another school because we already have enough parents who can transport your child. The cost to enter your child is $8.25.

CENTRE NEWS Full STEAM Ahead! The kids who volunteered to go to the STEAM room last week had a great time doing some

very inventive Lego creations. This week, the theme is Arts and Craft. Places are limited as we select only up to 30 children per session from all BASC children, firstly from those who have not attended before. In the afternoon, to avoid disruption to the activity, we would appreciate if parents go to your child’s normal room first. Please do not go directly to the STEAM room without confirming with the Room Leader.

Our incursion program continues next week. Reminder: If possible, we would ask parents to collect their children after 5:30pm on the relevant day.

Reports from our Room Leaders about some of the activities they have planned this week follow. Note, activities at BASC are based on the likes and interests of the children that attend and are linked to My Time, Our Place outcomes: children have a strong sense of identity; are connected and contribute to their world; have a strong sense of wellbeing; are confident and involved learners; are effective communicators.

Lauren: This week in K-2 Room we’ll be having Minion craft, Go For Your Life cardboard craft, object

tracing, dab painting and Mothers’ day craft. Outdoors we’ll be playing kick tennis, skipping and Hula Hoop comps, 2vs2 soccer, penalty shoot outs, cricket, bowling, touch footy and Jail Break.

Ben 3/4: This week, superheroes and villains will be the theme for our comic book creations! The staff

will help the children plan and storyboard, sketch and colour their own comic books. Outside the kids will be training for upcoming PSSA with a variety of soccer drills and games.

Aidan 5/6: As the kids will have the opportunity to go to the STEAM room for arts and crafts, we will

spend most of our time outside this week. We will be trying out a new variation of Soccer Lava Ball using

handballs to see if the children can adapt their skills. As well, games on the oval will also be a highlight ending the week.

You can look at the full list of programmed activities and our menus displayed in each room! Please note we offer time and assistance to do homework every day except when an incursion is programmed or for children in the STEAM room. We encourage homework but do not enforce.

Drama at Balgowlah

Since 1983 the Creativity Through Drama Workshops have been holding after-

school classes at Manly West Public School each term for ages 5-7 and 7-11 years.

These workshops offer children the opportunity to express themselves imaginatively

and creatively and build confidence and self-esteem through the fun and excitement

of drama. Bookings are essential for these highly popular classes.
