There have been no confirmed student or staff cases of COVID 19 at Drummoyne PS. Even so, we have a few families who are keeping children at home as precautionary self-isolation while family members who are undergoing tests for the virus. We understand the results take around 48 hours. If the school has a confirmed case of a student or member of staff having COVID-19, we will act on the advice from the Department. Each day, our cleaners are spending more time inside the school buildings to clean toilets more thoroughly, wiping hand rails, student tables, door knobs and the like with disinfectant and ensuring the supply of liquid soap in student and staff toilets. Our teachers are promoting hand hygiene and this has been addressed at infants and primary assemblies in a balanced way. In addition, we have reviewed and are implementing our infection control procedures. Further, health care plans have been reviewed to identify students who have a greater risk of respiratory infection. We are also following Health guidelines in relation to not shaking hands, coughing / sneezing into the pit of the arm and asking students and staff to not come to school if they are sick. Our teachers may contact you if your child has been sick and absent from school to check with you if there have been any flu-like symptoms. Please be assured that we are following the Department’s guidelines and advice in relation to the COVID 19 virus.

    PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Update COVID-19 In keeping with guidelines from the Department of Education, the following measures have been taken at the school to reduce the risk of the COVID-19 virus:

Firstly, suspected cases of COVID-19 are being reported to the Department’s hotline.

Planning for the Year Ahead On Tuesday night at the P&C meeting, we will be planning for the year ahead in relation to school events like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, the Activitython, Spring Fete and Trivia Night. I would like to invite all interested parents, especially parents new to the school, to join us and play a part in our school and community activities this year. An important part of the meeting will be the election of the P&C executive as all positions will be declared vacant. This is an excellent opportunity to become involved at the start of the year with a new P&C executive and team. I look forward to catching up with you in the Library on Tuesday night.

Parent Teacher Interviews Thank you to everyone who has booked in for parent teacher interviews. There are now over 500 interviews scheduled for the end of Term 1. If you have not been able to secure a time that suits you, please check the information in last week’s newsletter or contact your child’s class teacher directly.

Harmony & Multicultural Day Mufti While we are one school we are diverse in so many ways especially in the richness of our culture with some 39 languages being spoken by families who attend Drummoyne PS. On Friday next week, we will celebrate our diversity through Harmony Day and promote tolerance and, more so, acceptance under the banner of ‘Everyone Belongs’. Students are encouraged to wear their national costumes or orange.

Parent Volunteer Training Each year we are very fortunate to have the support of parents, grandparents and friends of the school volunteering to help in classrooms and across the school. To support parent volunteers this year we will provide face to face training for parent helpers on topics such as the role of the parent volunteer, how to teach reading, child protection, workplace health and safety, WWCC, communication with teachers and so on.

The second session (a repeat of session 1) will be held next week on Wednesday 18th March at 2.45pm with registration from 2.30pm. We would like all parent volunteers to undertake this training prior to working in classrooms in Term 2. Please email the office to reserve your place in session 2. Brian J Dill PRINCIPAL

    FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

Class 4H have taken great pride in creating artefacts that represent Indigenous culture. Students created artefacts such as dillybags, message sticks, hand axes

and hunting boomerangs. Artworks were created using hand-made paint brushes and painted on rocks and bark. Shelters were constructed to depict housing reflective of Indigenous peoples.

Class 3W have immersed themselves in the sights and sounds of the rainforest. During literacy groups they have been reading about the Amazon and Daintree Rainforests. They used their senses to create a sizzling start describing their rainforest art drawings.

Staff Professional Learning This week both Ms MacRae and Mrs Cassar attended professional learning on Effective Reading: Phonological Awareness. They explored how explicit and systematic teaching of phonics looks in the classroom to support early reading instruction and gained an understanding of teaching practices such as explicit teaching and effective feedback. Tell Them From Me Student Feedback Survey This term Year 4 - 6 students will be taking part in the “Tell Them From Me” student survey. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

Reminder - If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form and return it to school by 20th March, 2020. Dianne Colb DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

LEADING THE WAY IN YEAR 6

At school we recognise each and every year 6 student as a leader. While we have established formal roles such as prefects, house captains and librarians we want you to know that every student is a leader and that leadership is a responsibility we all share. Because of this, our Year 6 students attended a student leadership conference at Sydney Olympic Park.

This day was hosted by a values driven organisation named GRIP (Generosity, Responsibility, Integrity and People). By the end of the conference every student had the opportunity to participate in interactive activities, involve themselves in leadership games and listen to

keynote speakers who explored important characteristics that help transform all students into leaders, capable of making an impact within their school. We are grateful recipients of financial support given by Drummoyne Rotary Club and thank them for their investment in our leaders by subsidising the cost for our students.

Student led initiatives are most effective when they are supported by teachers and parents. We are excited our students have the opportunity to develop their leadership potential this year as these initiatives will strengthen our school community and provide each student with the opportunity to practise life-long skills which will benefit each individual now and in the years beyond Drummoyne Public School. Student reflections from the conference included:

    MATHS OLYMPIAD & MATHS GAMES

The Maths Games competition provides an opportunity for mainstream students in Years 5 and 6 to learn valuable problem solving skills and expose them to the application of mathematical problem solving strategies and techniques. Teams of high-achieving Year 4 students may also be considered for entry to the Maths Games competition as a precursor to the Maths Olympiad.

Maths Games is aligned with the Australian curriculum and focuses on challenging students to think laterally and creatively when solving mathematically-based problems.

Main Aims of the Program • Introduce students to important mathematical

concepts • Teach major strategies and develop flexibility for

problem solving • Foster creativity and ingenuity and strengthen

intuition • Stimulate enthusiasm and enjoyment of

mathematics • Provide for the satisfaction, joy and thrill of

    meeting challenges

Format of the Program • The annual APSMO Maths Games consists of 5

separate contests, one per month from May to September

    • Registration for the Maths Games is open to any registered school within Australia and New Zealand

    • Registered schools can enter teams of up to 30 students in the Maths Games

    • Students must be in a team - individual registration is not possible

    • The Maths Games questions are completed individually by each member within the team. Collaboration on answers is not allowed

The school will be organising regular practice sessions during which your child will be taught the skills and techniques required to develop maths problem solving skills. Orla Page Assistant Principal

    LIBRARY NEWS

With the 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge already underway, I thought it would be a good time to remind students and families about some of the features that you can access at home through Oliver Library. When students log into their student portal at home or at school, there is a link to Oliver Library. This will take you to our school library catalogue!

From here, you can search our library for a specific book, to see what’s new or to see which books are on the Premier’s reading list this year. You will also notice a panel labelled Britannica School. This year all students have access to Britannica School, an online, up to date version of Encyclopedia Britannica! There is a lot of information written at primary school level, including an

interactive world atlas, biographies and links to the ABCs Behind the News. A great resource to help with homework, assignments, or to explore just for fun!

A quick reminder also about borrowing and returning books. Students are encouraged to borrow weekly, during their library lessons. Kindy students can borrow 1 book every week, Years 1 and 2 can borrow 2 books, Year 3 can borrow 3 books, Year 4 can borrow 4 books,

Years 5 and 6 can borrow 5 books every week. For big readers, these numbers are flexible! Books are due back after one week, but students are welcome to renew. Students with overdue books are allowed to borrow one book and are encouraged to be responsible for returning their books so they can borrow more! Parents and carers, please help by reminding your children to pack their library bags and library books on their library days! If you have any questions, please come and see me in the library before or after school. Happy Reading!

    CODE CLUB

Code Club gives you the chance to learn computer coding using different coding languages such as Scratch, Python and HTML & CSS. You will have the chance to code animations, games and a variety of programs. Along the way you will learn computational thinking, problem solving and have some fun! There are still spaces available, so if this sounds interesting to you, see Mr Neufeld in the library. Code Club takes place on Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30pm

Harmony Day will be celebrated on Friday 20 March. Students are allowed to wear mufti on this day and are encouraged to wear national costumes or orange items of clothing or accessories – no football jerseys please. Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home - from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. This year, we have decided to celebrate our diversity at DPS with a school cookbook. Families are encouraged to find their favourite recipe, either from their own background or from another, to share. Photos of the final dish are welcome. These recipes will be collated, printed and bound to create a book. Each class will have their own copy to borrow and take home.

    P&C NEWS

There are two classes that still require a class parent volunteer Thank you to those parents who have kindly volunteered to be class parent this year. We have only two classes left without class parents - 1A and 6S - could we ask for one or two parent volunteers from each class to put their hand up. This role does not require a big time commitment but is a necessary part of communication flow and a way to connect parents. Please contact Sharon Brown-Keenan on 0413 808 073 or at [email protected]

The DPS P&C Annual General Meeting is on this Tuesday 17 March from 7.30pm in the Library and we’d like you to think about who you would like to run your P&C and encourage you to get involved.

At the AGM all office bearer roles are declared vacant, nominations are presented, a vote is taken and the Exec committee is elected for the year.

A huge thanks to the many of you who have put your hands up to volunteer for one or more of the P&C roles and activities this year. We've had over 100 families who have pledged their time and support so far, however we still need to fill the following vital roles urgently:

    1. Easter Hat parade Chocolate Raffle/Donation - Lead Role (9 April 2020) 2. Mother's Day Stall - Lead Role (6 May 2020) 3. Grandparent's Morning Tea on Open Day - Lead Role (4 Aug 2020) 4. Father's Day Stall - Lead Role (2 Sep 2020) 5. P&C Secretary

Each year, thanks to the parent volunteers, we are able to run a large number of P&C organised activities and provide services such as the uniform shop and the canteen. The funds raised from these activities contribute towards enriching our children's school lives in areas such as technology, playground and sun protection. Each year we invite all families to 'play a part' through volunteering for at least one role in that year. If you haven't had a chance to hand in the white P&C Volunteer Form or you'd like to change from a support role to a lead role, now is your opportunity to let us know.

We would also like to invite you to our P&C annual AGM next Tuesday 17th March, as well as monthly P&C meetings. Everyone is invited as you don't have to be a P&C member or volunteer for any specific roles. Attending P&C meetings is a great way to keep your finger on the pulse of what's happening around the school especially if you are a working parent and don't get to spend a lot of time at school. For an investment of two hours each month, you will also get to know our Principal, Mr Dill, personally and meet many other wonderful and like-minded parents.

Date: Third Tuesday of each month (AGM - Tue 17th March) Time: 7:30pm Location: School Library

    3. How have schools been selected to take part? The survey is open to all NSW government schools at no cost to them. Your child’s school has decided to participate.

  • CENTRE FOR EDUCATION STATISTICS AND EVALUATION WWW.CESE.NSW.GOV.AU

    4. How will taking part in this survey benefit my child’s school? The Tell Them From Me student survey will provide school principals and school leaders with insight into student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices at their school, from the perspective of students.

Data collected from the survey responses are quickly compiled into reports for school leaders. Principals can then use this information to help them identify emerging issues and plan for school improvement.

    5. What does my child need to do to participate in the survey? The survey typically takes less than 30 minutes and is conducted entirely online through a secure website operated by the survey developers, The Learning Bar. Schools will make computers or laptops available so that students can complete the survey during school hours.

    6. Does my child have to participate? No, participation in the survey is optional. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped. Parents/students have a right to apply for access to, and correction of, a student’s information.

    7. Will the school be able to identify my child from their responses?Staff in schools will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. To ensure confidentiality, participating students will receive a unique username and password. Where fewer than five students respond to a question, the results will not be made available.

A small number of staff in the department’s Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE) will have access to individual student responses for the purpose of state-wide

analysis. Individual students’ data will be held on a secure server with access strictly limited to CESE researchers. The researchers are interested in trends only – not in individual student responses. No student will be identified in any publication. No school will be identified unless they have given permission.

    8. What sort of analysis will be done on the survey data?Once the surveys are completed by students, reports are prepared and in most cases are available to schools within three business days. School leaders can use the data to better understand the experiences and views of students at their school.

CESE will undertake state-wide analysis of the survey data in conjunction with existing student data held by the department, including performance data.

The results will help all schools better understand the relationship between wellbeing, engagement, effective teaching and student learning. Results from CESE’s analysis of this data will also help teachers and principals discuss what works to improve student outcomes. This supports the department’s continuing focus on quality teaching and leadership. The data will be retained for future analysis to help us better understand the nature of student engagement and wellbeing over time.

    9. Can all school students participate in the survey? The primary school survey is designed for students in Years 4 to 6. Schools are encouraged to allow as many students as possible in these year groups to participate. Secondary schools are encouraged to allow as many students as possible in Years 7 to 12 to participate.

    10. When will the Tell Them From Me survey happen? The surveys will be conducted in all participating schools at the end of Term 1 and (optionally) Term 3/4.

What is The Learning Bar?The Learning Bar specialises in research-based design and facilitation of student assessments and survey solutions for both primary and secondary students. The in-house research team led by the President, Dr J Douglas Willms, undertakes extensive projects used in the school system to affect national policy. It is against this research that the survey, Tell Them From Me, has become the largest national school survey in Canada, used in nine of the ten provinces. Globally, more than 6,300 schools and 5.4 million students have participated in the survey over the last twelve years.

Dr Willms recently held the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Literacy and Human Development. He plays a lead role in the development of questions on student engagement for the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

For purely administrative purposes, The Learning Bar will also have temporary access to identifiable student responses to the survey questions. Other than The Learning Bar and CESE researchers within the department, identifiable student responses will not be disclosed to any other person or body other than as required by law.

Tell Them From Me student survey: Information and consent form for parents and carers

    6th March, 2020

    Dear Parents and Carers

In Term 1 2020, our school is taking part in the Tell Them From Me student survey (Years 4-6). The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them improve. The survey is completed on-line and is run by an independent research company, The Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys.

Staff in schools will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. To ensure confidentiality, participating students will receive a unique username and password. Where fewer than five students respond to a question, the results will be suppressed. The survey typically takes 30 minutes or less to complete and will be administered by the school during normal school hours

As well as schools getting student feedback, the Department of Education, through the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE), has access to data from across NSW and is running a research project to look at state-wide patterns of student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. The research is looking at how these things impact on student outcomes, including academic performance. Individual students will not be identified in any CESE publications, and all information will be handled in accordance with the relevant privacy legislation. Students’ personal information will not be disclosed by the department to any other person or body other than as required by law.

This research will help schools in New South Wales to better understand how to improve student wellbeing and engagement. It will also help teachers and principals discuss what works to improve student outcomes.

Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped.

If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form and return it to your child's school by 20th March, 2020.

    INSIGHTS

    Going beyond the fishbowl

It’s a quirk of nature that the extent of our growth is determined by our immediate environment. For instance, a fearsome sharkwill only grow five centimetres long if it spends all its life in a fish bowl. Put that shark in the sea and will grow to five metres ormore. A shark’s genes may provide the blueprint, but its growth will be restricted by the size of its immediate environment.

The same principle applies to children. Restrict them to a safe, insular environment and their capacity for reaching their fullpotential will be limited. Getting kids to go beyond the fishbowl and be part of the wider world is how we prepare them for thecareer-fluid future that awaits them.

Recently, I wrote a forward for a soon to be released parenting book written by South African authors Nikki Bush and GraemeCodrington titled “Future proof your child for the 2020s and beyond”. The authors described the future that our children areentering as full of exponential and disruptive change led by technology and shiing social mores. They reasoned that in the worldof work and enterprise that awaits today’s generation of children and young people, creativity, problem-solving, design, bigpicture thinking and risk-taking will be richly rewarded. According to Bush and Codrington, the future will belong to the kids whoare going beyond the fishbowl, willing to expand their physical and mental horizons.

American parenting icon Lenore Skenazy, founder of the free-range parenting movement is a long-time advocate for parentsgiving kids the freedom they need to explore their neighbourhoods and take safe risks.

Dubbed ”America’s Worst Mom” for allowing her nine-year old son to ride the New York subway on his own in 2008, Skenazy hasbeen an outspoken advocate for allowing kids more freedom and unsupervised time. She maintains that kids are “safer andsmarter than our culture believes.” Like Bush and Codrington, Skenazy encourages parents to allow kids to jump out thefishbowl of school, family and their immediate neighbourhood and encourage them to explore their capabilities in the widerworld. She acknowledges that allowing kids the same type of freedoms that previous generations enjoyed takes significantparental courage.

If kids are to be truly resilient and make the most of the exciting but uncertain future that awaits them, it’s more important thanever to loosen the reins so that both generations – children and parents- experience more freedom.

  • Lives lost on NSW roads. Our goal is zero.

Keeping your children safe when dropping off and picking up at schoolHere are a few things you can do to help keep your children and others safer during drop-off and pick-up times during the school week:

    • Make sure your children are fastened in the correctchild car seat for their age and size and that it isfitted correctly.

    • Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in a school zoneand look out for children who may be about.

    • Watch for flashing lights on buses. They let youknow that there may be children crossing or aboutto cross the road. A 40km/h limit applies whenschool bus lights flash.

    • Always give way to pedestrians particularly whenentering and leaving driveways.

    • Always park and turn legally around schools.Manoeuvres such as U-turns and three-point turnsare dangerous during busy school drop-off andpick-up times.

    • Drop your children off and pick them up on theschool side of the road in your school’s designateddrop-off and pick-up area. Never call out tothem from across the road – they may run to youwithout checking for traffic.

    • It’s safest for children to get out of the car throughthe Safety Door, away from passing traffic. This isthe rear footpath side door of the car.
