Resistance to Capsize – The Regulation

Australian Sailing |
• Monohulls competing in Category 1 and 2 races must comply with SR 3.04.1 and Appendix B
• Two options depending on the race category
• For category 1 races either of:
– ORCi stability index of 115 or greater, within 5 years
– ISO 12217 Category A assessment, STIX of 35, freeboards and righting moment measured
• For category 2 races either of:
– ORCi stability index of 110 or greater, within 5 years
– ISO 12217 Category A assessment
• Movable and Variable Ballast – 0.9 BLR if ORCi, or FKR if ISO 12217

Resistance to Capsize – ISO
• ISO 12217-2 – designer assessment
STIX=35.6 > 35
Measured by a measurer
Design Category A

Resistance to Capsize – ISO
• ISO 12217-2 – designer assessment
STIX = 48.65 > 35

Resistance to Capsize – IRC (ISO)
• ISO 12217-2 – IRC Certificate for Cat 2 only

Resistance to Capsize – ORCi
• ORCi certificate – stability datasheet

Resistance to Capsize – How do you get it?
• ORCi: Rating Office + measurer
– Contact Australian Sailing Ratings Office: [email protected]
– Contact an ORC measurer to measure the boat
• ISO 12217-2: Designer ( + measurer for Cat 1)
– For Cat 1: Contact an ORC measurer or a marine surveyor to have the boat inclined and the stability measured, and get the designer to produce a “Stability assessment according to ISO 12217-2 displaying the STIX number and the design category
– For Cat 2: Contact the designer and ask for a “Stability assessment according to ISO 12217-2 displaying the design category
• If the boat has movable and/or variable ballast (such as water ballast or a canting keel), make sure you have one of these factors displayed on your stability papers:
– For ORC: the BLR ratio which should be greater than 0.9
– For ISO: the FKR ratio which should be greater than 0.9

Resistance to Capsize – How do you get it?
• Prerequisite data
– Need the hull shape
– ORC’s data base, designer files or measurement
• Modifying the boat?
– New certification will be needed
– Contact an ORC measurer to update the boat’s measurements
– Contact the designer to issue new ISO certification, or Australian Sailing to issue new rating certificate
• Multiple designers contributing to the boat?
– Sharing design files between themselves is unlikely, but possible ORC could splice design files together
– Any designer could do the ISO assessment
– Measure boat from scratch
• Deceased designer of a one-off?
– Measure boat from scratch
