AN innovative family home on a battleaxeblock in Applecross has been namedwinner of the Building DesignersAssociation of WA’s 2010 award forresidences with a floor area between 351-450sqm.

The award, to building designer GaryKeen, of Gary Keen Building Design, wasannounced at the BDAWA annual designawards gala presentation dinner at theUniversity Club of WA on Saturday.

The judges made the followingobservations of the award-winning project:

“Don’t underestimate the power of alemon-scented gum. Gary Keen certainlydidn’t in his design solution for a clientwanting to lose nothing of the ambienceafforded by such a magnificent tree in thedevelopment of a quiet battleaxe block inApplecross.

“The grand old tree was pivotal not onlyas an entry statement to the property butalso as a benchmark for the scaling of thestylish, contemporary structure it servesto complement.

“In the battleaxe scheme of things,special consideration was needed for thejourney from the road to the house, so thelemon-scented gum held the key to thedesign outcome. Using it as a distinctivepoint of reference, the designer cleverlylandscaped its location as the featurearound which all else would evolve.

“The result is stunning empathy – a two-storey wing that blends with the scale ofthe nearby tree at the same time providinga visual connection with the main road,

sympathetically connected in turn to alower-profile single-storey extension thatprovides a sense of casual elegance to theentire development.

“While the upper level of the two-storey wing includes a spacious mastersuite and studio as one of the requiredseparate zoned areas, the overall designpromotes interactive living throughout aspacious and open family friendly floor planfeaturing modern, inviting textures to givethe residence an upmarket, contemporaryfeel.”

He recently opened a new photographic

gallery in Fremantle to display his Wild EarthImages of Australia and elsewhere.

The gallery displays brilliant scenes onhuge limited-edition two-metre canvasses,triptychs, and framed photographic picturesin a range of sizes, plus new acrylic ice blocks.

“Opening a bigger gallery was needed sothat I could display the bigger canvasses andhave more space to display a great range ofsubjects and places. It was the next step inthe growth of our business,” he said.

“We have been selling our pictures to

people from all around the globe from a verysmall shop in the historic Fremantle Markets,but with the refurbishment of the markets,we were given the opportunity to move intoa larger gallery-style shop.

“People want to bring these scenes intotheir home or office environment – and astelevision screens get bigger, so does thedemand for bigger pictures.”

Richard has been taking pictures for morethan 10 years and has travelled to remoteregions of Australia as well as to Europe and

Asia. He has perfected his photographic skillsprimarily by researching, travelling andcamping throughout Australia’s outbackwhere he could experience nature first hand.

“When I go to a place, I’ll think of the lifeand time of that location, how it was created– its past, present and its future,’’ he said.

“There are places in the outback that onfirst view, seem not to have changed inthousands of years but on more research anddeeper thought, the land tells a silent storywith evidence of climate change, weatherfactors, and the presence of animals andhumans passing through. The cameracapture’s each scene as an historicalcatalogue of what is and what has been.”

Richard said a new digital camera hebought in Europe would help to take hispictures to another level.
