Transcript of Residence Life Journal - February 2012
The expressed purpose of the residence life program here at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology is to
foster self-development, good citizenship, and democratic principles. These goals are accomplished
through acquisition of decision-making skills on the part of the
student and through the emulation and promotion of values inclusive of respect for fellow students, honesty
and the involvement of students in the residence hall governing structure.
The residence life program also seeks to create an environment of understanding and
appreciation for the values of students from diverse backgrounds. It is through the
development of this kind of sensitivity that students grow personally, which impacts directly on other pro-
gram purposes of citizenship and emulation of democratic principles set forth in the College’s mission and
purpose.”
Happy Valentine’s Day!

I have been going around campus asking our female stu-
dents exactly what they would like for Valentine’s Day.
Most of them, surprisingly said that a gift really doesn't
matter to them, as they would prefer that the man in their
life would just take them out for a romantic dinner, or
spend quality alone time together with them at some spe-
cial location. Naturally, a box of chocolates, a dozen
roses or a loving teddy bear, certainly is a plus.

At first, in 1926, what we now know as Black History Month, was for only one week. It was called “Negro History Week” and then later on it became, Black His-tory Month. Dr. Carter G. Woodson was upset that the Black American population wasn't in our history books and he felt as though Black Americans should be repre-sented there. In 1915, he established the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life. Shortly thereafter, he started the Negro History Week in order to bring na-tional attention to the contributions of Black Americans throughout history. Woodson made it the second week in February, due to the fact that Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln had their birthdays in this same week. Dr. Carter G. Woodson
