Asaresultoflivingoncampus,studentswillbecomeempoweredcitizenswhoresponsiblyimpacttheircommunities.
I.GENERALSTATEMENTOFDUTIES:
TheResidenceHallDirectorisafull-time,live-in,professionalstaffmemberresponsibleforthedailyoperationsofa250-650bedresidencehall(s)oron-campusapartments.TheRHDdirectlysupervises5-12ResidentAssistants,1-2InclusionAssistants,andmostRHDssuperviseafrontdeskoperationandadvisehallcouncil.TheRHDischargedwithdevelopingacommunitythatpromotesengagement,learning,respectfordiversity,andstudentsuccess.TheRHDplaysanintegralroleindevelopingandimplementingourresidentialcurriculum.On-callresponsibilitiesaresharedfor1,200-2,000residents.
Alive-inpositionisonewheretheindividualmaintainsanon-campusapartmentastheirprimaryresidence.RHD'smustresideinanon-campusapartmentthroughoutthetermoftheirappointment.ThedepartmentprovidesanapartmentandmealplantoallowtheRHDtobevisibleintheircommunity,eatmealsintheresidentialrestaurant,attendmeetingsandeventsregularly,andbeabletorespondtoemergencieswithintheircommunity.Somesummeremploymentopportunitiesareavailable.HallDirectorsareprovided12-monthhousingifreturningthefollowingyear.
ReportingStructure:TheResidenceHallDirectorreportsdirectlytotheAssistantDirectorofResidenceLifeandindirectlytotheotherAssistantDirectors,theAssociateDirector,andDirectorofResidenceLife.
MinimumQualifications:Bachelor'sdegreeandpreviousresidencelifeexperienceisrequired;Master'sdegreeincollegestudentpersonnelorhighereducationadministrationandsupervisoryexperienceisstronglypreferred.

A.Administrative
o Managethedaytodayoperationsofresidencehall(s)orapartments.o Computerproficient,including:web-basedprograms,MicrosoftOffice,ande-
mailasasignificantmodeofcommunication/documentation.o Developandutilizehallopening/closingprocedures.o Maintainoccupancy/rosterandmaintainkeycontrol/inventory.o Attendmeetings,includingbutnotlimitedto:departmentmeetings,staff
meetings,committeemeetings,andone-on-onemeetings.o ServeonResidenceLifecommittees.o Maintainadministrativeandinformationalrecords.o Supervisea24-hourdeskoperationwhereapplicable;beresponsibleforsafe
monies,ifapplicable.o Completestudentaccountchargesforprivateandpublicareadamages.o Fiscallyresponsibleforhalloperationalandsocialaccounts.
B.StaffSupervision
o Interview,select,train,supervise,andevaluateResidentAssistants,InclusionAssistant,HallCouncilAdvisoranddeskstaff,asneeded.
o Holdstaffaccountableformeetingperformanceexpectations,includingresponsibilitiesoutlinedintheresidentialcurriculum.
o Utilizedepartmentalresourcesforstaffdevelopmentandtraining,includingbutnotlimitedtotheParaprofessionalResourceCenterandSkyfactorSurveyresults.
o ProvidestaffmembersguidanceaboutUniversitypoliciesandprocedures.
C.CommunityDevelopment
o Establishastrong,positivelearningenvironmentwithinresidentialareasandtheUniversitycommunity.
o Workwithstudentsindevelopingfloor/buildingcommunitiesconduciveforhighacademicachievement.
o Provideleadershipincreatingacommunitythatsupportsstudentsofunderrepresentedanddiversepopulations.
o Educatestaffandstudentstoself-enforcepoliciesandrespecttherightsofothersthroughcommunitystandards.

o EncouragemaximumparticipationofresidentsinHallCouncilandhallprograms.
D.StudentDevelopment
o Contributetothedevelopmentandfacilitationoftheresidentialcurriculum.o Serveasapartnerinthestudent'stotaldevelopmentbyworkingwith:
AcademicAdvisingandAssistance,CareerDevelopmentCenter,CounselingCenter,CareAdvocate,StudentActivitiesandInvolvement,andotherofficesaswarranted.
o Facilitateleadershipopportunitiesandsupportallstudentsinleadershipdevelopment,specificallyleadershipeventssponsoredbyResidenceLife.
o Facilitatethedisciplineprocesstoserveasaneducationaltool.o Contributetorecruitmentandretentionprogramsandinitiatives.
E.Counseling/Discipline
o Followuponalldisciplineinaneducationalandtimelymannerwithappropriatedocumentation.
o WorkcollaborativelywiththeOfficeofStudentConductandOfficeofStudentAffairs.
o Referallmentalhealthconcernstoappropriateresourcesandmaintainthoroughdocumentation.
o UtilizetheCareAdvocatewithstaffmembersandasaresourceandreferral.o CompleteBehaviorandSafetyPlans,emergencycontactnotifications,and
StudentExpectationsMeetingsasappropriate.o Engagefamilyand/orothersupportsincreatingsuccessforstudents.
F.HealthandSafety
o Providecrisismanagementsupportandintervention,whichmayberequiredonweekends,atnight,etc.Serveonanon-calldutyrotation.Respondtoadditionalemergencysituationsasnecessary.Supervise24-hourcoverageofarea.
o Developasecurityprogramandcoordinateemergencyprocedures,i.e.,poweroutage,firedrills,medicalemergencies,bombthreats,etc.Educateresidentsaboutemergencyprocedures.
o MaintainappropriatecommunicationwithCMUPolice.
G.FacilitiesManagement
ResidenceHallDirectorJobDescription 4
o CommunicatewithBuildingMaintenanceWorker(BMW)andimmediatesupervisoronbuildingneedsandpreventivemaintenanceprojects.
o SubmitworkordersforfacilityneedsnotcoveredbytheBMW.o Monitorallpublicareafacilities,utilizingadamagecontrol
board/improvementcommitteeasnecessary.o Maintainpositiveworkingrelationshipwithcustodiansandotherfacilities
personnel.o Coordinateandsuperviseproperusageofresidentialrestaurantsandpublic
spaceswhenusedforprogramsandactivities.o Monitorfitness/computerequipment,ifapplicable.
H.ContinuousImprovement
o Supportdepartment,divisionanduniversitystrategicplanninginitiatives,mission,visionandeducationalpriority.
o Contributetoacomprehensiveassessmentplanthatencompassessatisfaction,retention,andstudentlearninggoals.
o Utilizeassessmentandbenchmarkingsurveydatatoleadevidence-basedenhancementsinthedevelopmentofcommunity,programming,facilities,wellnessandsupportservicesforstudents,thedepartmentandself.
I.AllOtherDutiesasAssignedWhileperformingstaffsupervision,communitybuildingandeducation,healthandsafetyandfacilitiesmanagementdutiesofthisposition,theemployeeisrequiredtoaccessallfloorsandpublicareasofthebuilding(s)onaweeklybasisandperiodicallyaccessfloorsandpublicareasoftheotherbuilding(s)intheresidentialareaaswellasotherbuildingsandlocationsoncampus.Reasonsforfloorandbuildingaccessmayincludebutarenotlimitedtofacilityandsafetyinspections,emergencyresponse,studentpolicyviolationsandsafetyconcerns,staffmemberobservation,andavailabilityandoutreachtoresidents.Ininstancesofemergencies,theRHDmustbeabletorespondinatimelymannerappropriatetothesituation.Theemployeemustalsobeabletodoexteriorbuildinginspectionstwicepersemesterorwhenbuildingsareclosedforbreaks.Theemployeeisfrequentlyrequiredtoutilizethecomputerandphone.Individualsmustperformtheessentialfunctionsofthisjob.Reasonableaccommodationsmaybemadetoenableindividualswithdisabilitiestoperformtheessentialfunctions.CMUisanAA/EOinstitution,providingequalopportunitytoallpersons,includingminorities,females,veteransandindividualswithdisabilities.RevisedAugust2018RHDJOBDESCRIPTION
