Residence Hall History at JMU 1984 — 2013

McGraw-Long Hall The second of the three Hillside residence halls, this Hall attempted to appease the growing need for student housing in 1984. The Hall is named after members of the Board of Visitors, Nellie L. Long and Walter J. McGraw.

Hillside Hall The third and final hall of the three Hillside Area residence

halls, Hillside Hall was built in 1987. It replaced the modular homes that were used in the 1970s and 80s when campus

housing was tight. 1987

1994

Wampler Hall Located on the Quad, the Hall was built in 1994. Its namesake

was local businessman and former Board of Visitors

member Charles H. Wampler Jr.

1997 Blue Ridge Hall Named for the surrounding mountains, which the hall faces, Blue Ridge Hall was part of the effort in the 1990s to try and house as many students on campus as possible. It is located in the Skyline Area of campus. Today, the Hall houses various clinics.

Potomac Hall Located across Interstate 81 in

the Skyline Area of campus, Potomac Hall takes its name

from Virginia’s Potomac River. It can house over 400 students.

1998 1999

Chesapeake Hall Built next to Potomac Hall in 1999, Chesapeake Hall is located in the Skyline Area of campus and can host more than 400 students. Its name is derived from Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay.

2009

Shenandoah Hall This is the second residence hall with the name Shenandoah; the

earlier hall was demolished in 2006. The Hall, located in the Skyline

Area, was completed in 2009 and can house more than 400 students.
