How to Research Which Programs to Apply To

Once you have decided on a specialty, it is time to begin looking at varioussources of information about programs within that specialty. Many specialtyorganizations maintain databases on accredited programs, searchable by

state/location. Often, the listed program names are links to individual programwebsites. Alternatively, you can use the official database, called FRIEDA, whichlists all accredited programs in all specialties and is searchable by many criteria. The data in FRIEDA is always fairly accurate, but is updated most frequentlyduring the active months of the matching cycle (September-March).

Another source of information about good programs to apply to is your ownnetwork of IMG physician colleagues and the staff at your Kaplan Center. Theseindividuals usually have a working knowledge of where other IMGs foundprogram interest, either in the form of offered interviews or where they actuallymatched.

Your own research can lead to other prospects by making use of the UnfilledPosition lists from previous cycles of the NRMP match. We suggest that you limitthis to the 3 most recent match years because program policies and theiropenness to IMG applications do change over time. Most medical schoolreference libraries will have copies of the Unfilled Position List booklets, or thebooklets may be ordered online at the www.nrmp.org website. Once you obtainthe lists, scan within your specialty of interest to find programs that have not always filled in the 3 previous matches. In the lists, this is indicated bysubtracting the program Quota number from the Filled number listed for eachprogram. Programs which have experienced problems in filling all the positionsoffered in the match are often more receptive to considering internationallytrained applicants.

Once you have identified a number of programs that look interesting andpotentially open to IMG applicants, visit their individual program websites to readabout what they offer. The typical program information provided in FRIEDA isillustrated on the next pages with an example which was taken directly from theFRIEDA database:

Here are some of the residency program features that you can use to establishyour own list of criteria by which to compare programs:

•  frequency of call•  number of training sites•  location of training sites•  opportunities for residents to do research•  special emphases or clinical activities of the hospital•  number of graduates from the program•  number of residents in each training year•  number of faculty•  passing rate on specialty board exam of program’s graduates•  salary•  benefits•  employment outlook for specialty in the state where program is located•  specifics of curriculum, such as inclusion of medical informatics or other

content that will help prepare you for employment upon completion of

training

Based on the standard types of information provided by programs, werecommend that you develop your own comparison checklist to use in comparingprograms. This comparison format will be useful in generating questions to ask atinterviews, as well as in formatting your personal evaluation notes on programsafter you have interviewed, which you can then refer to in writing thank- youletters and in assembling your final rank order list.

http://www.acgme.org/adspublic/

This is a screenshot from the website for ACGME, the residency program accrediting

body. This site also allows you to see lists of programs by choosing a specialty ofinterest. The results provide basic program information such as the FRIEDA 10-digit

code number, the program name, and program director’s contact information.

http://www.appd.org/

This is one example of a specialty specific website. This is a screen shot from the Assn.

of Pediatric Program Directors, and again, provides you with basic information about pediatric programs throughout the US.

  9

http://www.childrenshospitalla.org/body.cfm?id=45

This is an example of a website for an individual residency program. Individual program

websites normally provide you with a comprehensive description of their training program, including what you will be doing each year, call schedules, research

opportunities, links to the hospitals in which you would be working, and informationabout the setting, clinical faculty, ongoing research protocols, and so on.

Page 11: Researching Prg Ms

  10

http://www.childrenshospitalla.org/body.cfm?id=228

This is another section from the same program website that you just saw, but this screen

provides information about the kinds of clinical research that is being conducted at thatlocation. Information like this is useful in helping you evaluate training opportunities

such as becoming involved in research during your residency, but also for preparing forinterviews, when you might want to ask them more about their research activities and

how residents could become involved.

http://www.childrenshospitalla.org/body.cfm?id=318

Again, this is from the same program’s website, but this section provides detailed

information about what the PGY-1 year will be like, as well as showing you what thedaily schedule will be during that year. You will be expected to already be familiar with

all of this information when you appear for interviews. Nothing  turns off a programdirector faster than an applicant asking basic questions about the training, when that

information is clearly provided on the program’s website.

Match Class Unfilled List SampleTo search this list for yourself, just go to your Match Class screen on the Kaplan medicalwebsite and click on Resources to find the link.

This list is a compilation of programs grouped by specialty that met one or both of thefollowing criteria:

1. The programs did not consistently fill during the 3 previous years’ matches

2. IMGs who studied with Kaplan either got interviews or matched there
