Writing a research papers

An Easy Guide for Non-Native English Speakers

Foreword:Few scientists find writing scientific papers easy. Yet much of the scientific research may be lost if the results are not published. The majority of scientists in the developed world can publish in journals in their languages, such as English, French or German. But, most developing-country scientists have no such advantage. For many would-be contributors these languages are not their native tongue, so writing scientific papers becomes very much harder.

There are many type of scientific publication:

1- Research journals2- Conference proceedings3- Reports4- Newsletters5- Annual reviews

The basis of communication in scientific research today is the scientific article, published in a primary research journal. Every journal has its own definition but almost all of them center around the phrase “original research”.

Page 7: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

What are the reasons for writing papers?

Because you get promoted if you publish a lot? Because your director wants to see some results from the work you have been doing? Because you want to go to conferences?

These are not all the story. As a scientist you are a member of an elite group. It is your duty as a scientist to communicate the results of your research to as wide an audience as possible. The work you do is useless unless you make the results known to other people.

Page 8: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Because of the high standards usually required of articles, it is often difficult to have a paper accepted by a journal. Once a scientist has the skills to write an acceptable research article, other forms of scientific writing, such as conference papers and reviews, follow on easily.

Page 9: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

How do you start writing?Unless you are very experienced, you should never sit down and try to write a research paper from start to finish.

To write well it is necessary to plan. But before you can start planning you must have something to say, a message to describe.

It is difficult to write a paper when you do not have enough to say.

Page 10: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

ScopeMany of the statements of scope in the research journals include the word significant. They are looking for “significant results” or “papers reporting a significant advance in knowledge. One of the first questions that the editors of the journal will ask themselves when they are receive your paper: Is the information in the paper significant, new and worth publishing?Try to put yourself in the place of editor or a referee. They will be asking themselves the question “ Why should I publish this paper?” You have to make sure that the answer is “Because it is a good piece of work.”

Page 11: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Begin by writing a title for paper. You can usually start with the title of your original research proposal, then try to write a summary of your results and what they show so far. Then you can look at the these and try to decide if your results are worth publishing.

How people read papers?Very few papers are read from the beginning to the end. Most people read journals sitting in a library. They pick up the journal, look at the contents list, see the title that is interesting, turn to that page and read the abstract, then they may look at the figures, then the tables, then the rest of the paper.

Page 12: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

There are two types reader for your paper:1- The expert in your field who will want to get all the information out of the paper.2- Casual readers who will only be interested in your results as a background to their own work.

Today a lot of information is passed around the world in the form of titles and abstracts:•Abstract journals (which are extensive indexes to guide people to the papers).•Current contents (which prints the complete contents pages of the journals it receives).•Electronic databases (which available with the same sort of information in them).

Page 13: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Your paper will also have to compete with the thousands of the other papers published on the same topic. So, this is how you should look at your own paper, and write it with the following points in mind:

Title → attracts the expert and interests the casual readerAbstract → stimulates the expert to read the paper and supplies the casual reader with definite informationFigures & tables → summarize your results to the person scanning the articleResults → give more detailDiscussion → give meaning the results

Page 14: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Physically the title and abstract are quite small (left), but they are extremely important in terms of getting the paper noticed in contents lists and abstract journals (right)

Page 15: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Choosing a journalBefore start planning your article you should decide on the journal in which you are going to try to publish. Different journals have different styles and different rules of presentation for the material they publish. When you are choosing a journal, ask yourself questions such as: -What are the scope and aims of the journal?-How often is the journal published?-What types of article does the journal publish?-Are there any conditions to submitting to the journal?-Is there any page charge for publishing a paper?

Page 16: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

The scope and the aims of a journal are usually printed on the inside of the cover of the journal.

Don’t send a theoretical paper to a journal that only publishes practical research.

Don’t send a research paper to a journal that only publishes reviews.

Scientific publishing is a slow process usually. Some journals are published twice a year and some journals may published forth a year or even once a month. You have to ask yourself “Will publication time affect the relevance of my article?”

Page 17: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Many journals have a specific format for the articles they publish. If your article dose not fit, the paper may be rejected. If your paper is going to be 20 printed pages long and the journal only publishes papers up to 5 pages, This again mean that yours will be rejected.

In some journals, one of the authors must be a member of the society which publishes the journal. Sometimes there are certain types of statistical analysis that must be used, and the experiments must have been repeated a number of times.

Page 18: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Many journals have page charges, where you have to pay the journal to publish the paper. Usually the charges are based on the number of pages in the final published paper. These charges can be extremely high. Some journals even expect money to be sent with the manuscript to cover the cost of considering the paper. You should look for this condition carefully in the journal and think if you have enough money in your budget.

The best journals have a high rejection rate. You have to take all factors into account. Is your paper really good enough to send to the very best journal? Perhaps not. Then it is much better to send it to a less well-known journal and have a better chance of getting it accepted.

Page 19: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Journal styleOnce you have decided on a journal you should start to prepare your manuscript in the journal’s style and format.

Most journals publish detailed guides to authors or information to contributors either in the first issue of the year or as a separate booklet.

Making a plan for the articleLook at the way that the articles in the journal you have chosen are subdivided. This layout will give you a valuable clue about how to start planning your article.

Page 20: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Most types of research article follow the classic pattern of:Introduction, Answering the question:Why did I do the work and what were the objectives-what did I want to find out?MaterialsWhat did I use and how did I use it?MethodsWhat did I do and how did I do it?ResultsWhat happened?DiscussionWhat does it all mean?AcknowledgementsWho help me?ReferencesWho have I cited in the text?

The parts of the paper:The questions you answer when planning a paper help you break the paper down into its elements, which can be explained as follows:[1] The reason for doing the work[2] What was known and what was not known before the investigation was started and the logic leading to the experiments. [3] What the work was expected to show, or the objectives, and the hypothesis under test.[4] The setting and the conditions of experiment that eliminate variation[5] The experimental plan

Page 22: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

[6] The methods used[7] How the data were collected[8] The method of analysing the data and the statistical techniques[9] The results obtained[10] The validity and meaning of the results and the conclusions to be drawen from them[11] Implication of the results in relation to other work[12] Directions for future work[13] References to other work in the field

Page 23: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Make up the figures and tables:- It is usually best to draw your results in graph and table from before or while you are writing.- Remember that the figures and tables are two of the most effective parts of the paper in giving information so you should put a lot of thought into them.

Page 24: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Building up the plan:First you should decide on the main divisions of the article. Look at a single heading, for example the material and methods. You can immediately break that down into a materials section and a methods section. Now think about what materials you did in fact use. You can write down heading such as making a list of subdivisions or sections.

Page 25: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Thinking of the paper as a series of parts will make it easier for you to build up your ideas into a full article

Page 26: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Systemically you take each section and ask yourself what you want to say. Work through each subdivisions, writing down notes on what you should describe. These form nature sections which can consider individually. Now you can stand back and think. What have you left out? Is there a title for every part of your work? Have you repeated some thing? Should a certain heading be moved to another section? Now that you have your master plan, what should you do? Some people will start writing, because they feel confident that they know what they want to say.

Page 27: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

You should not feel that you have to plan the whole paper in one sitting. You should split up the planning and the writing to fit your time. Carry a notepad with you, or some cards, and whenever a thought comes to you, you can quickly write it down. This process is specially useful for discussion section, which always requires a lot of thought and interpretation. Very often an important idea suddenly appear. As you make your notes, you collect them all together in boxes, or files, or whatever, each separately labelled.

Page 28: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Remember the references:As you go through the paper planning the sections and making your notes, you should also remember to make notes about all the references you will want to mention in the text, so that at the end of planning you will have an outline of your reference list as well.

Making a start on writing:Sometimes it is difficult to start. One way around this is to begin with the easiest section, the Material and Methods, which is a simple description of what you used and what you did. Then you could go on to the Results, again because you only have to describe exactly what happened.

Page 29: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Consider your working day, and when you can work on your paper. Most people do not have long period of time to sit down and write. They must do an hour here, and a few hours there.

Some people work at home with family life going on around them.

When you work you are being interrupted all the time, so your thoughts are being disturbed. Your approach should be that you work on your writing whenever you have time.

Page 30: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Writing the first versionOnce you have organized all your material, prepared the figures and made up the table, written all your notes, and assemble them in the order you want, you are ready to start writing.

Once you start, you should write as fast as you can. Do not worry about language, grammar, style, or spelling. Just write down as much as possible while the flow of whatever section you are working on is clear in your mind. Try to write simply.

Page 31: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Sometimes it be better for you to write your first draft in your own language and translate it later. However, some people find this harder than writing in English from the start because of the problems of translating the patterns of their own languages. You can even write in a mixture of languages, using English for the technical terms and your own language in other places.

Page 32: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

As you are writing, you can use any abbreviations that are useful, especially code words or name of longer terms. However, the use of abbreviations is strictly regulated in most journals, as is accepted nomenclature and terminology.

Page 33: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Most important at this stage is to turn your notes into written language. Finish with each section before going to the next one. Do not go back and start revising parts of what you have written until you have completed your writing.

Be practical as well, paper is not so expensive. Do not be afraid to use it. Leave wide margins and plenty of space between the lines. You are certain to be revising what you are writing and you will need physical space on the page to include all the words.

Page 34: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Revising the first draft:Once your first attempt is finished, you can start revising the paper. Remember that there are many steps in the publishing process, and the manuscript usually needs changes at every one of them. You should never think that you have just written is perfect. You should always be prepared to revise what you have written.

Remember also that at this stage the scientific content of the paper is the main thing you should be worrying about. Do not waste energy worrying too much about grammar and style yet.

Page 35: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

As you are reading what you have written in the paper, ask your self questions like this:

Are all the parts of the paper properly described?

Are there any major changes need?

Is the logic of the paper sound?

Is the order of presentation satisfactory?

Is all the text needed?

Can any figures or tables be eliminated or combined?

Is each piece of text in the correct section?

Is the sequence of paragraphs correct?

Are there enough or too many headings and subheadings?

Page 36: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Aims in drafting/revising:There are several things you should do to the versions of the paper that you write. You should:

Review the scientific content of the paper until you are certain it is correct. Put the paper a side for several days or weeks and then reread it. Give a version of the paper to someone else to review it. Check the paper for language and style. Prepare the manuscript so that it can be submitted to the journal.

Page 37: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

The second version of the paper Once you have finished revising the first draft of your paper, you will logically, have a second draft in your hands.

From the practical point of view, there is only a certain amount of revision you can physically fit on to your manuscript. Once a page is full of changes, you should retype it. Your main concern should still be the scientific content of the article. Do not start worrying about such minor things as correct spelling if you still have to make major changes to the text.

Page 38: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Once you are satisfied with the standards of your work and you think you have a second draft, type the paper into a neat format, preferably the format of the journal. The next thing to do is to give the article to friends or other workers in the same field as yourself and ask them to comment on the scientific content. Also, and it is an important note, you should put the article away for a few days or a week, then come back to it and re-read it. You will be surprised at how many changes will be obvious if you do this. Include all your changes and those of your “reviewers” to produce a new version of the paper.

Page 39: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

The third draft By now you should be confident of the content and structure of the article, and its scientific aspect. Now you have to make sure that the paper can be read easily and your massage understood.

This is a very important point, because no matter how good your results are, if the reader cannot understand what you are trying to say, you are wasting your time writing the article.

Page 40: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Check the references:At this stage you must check that all the references given or cited in your reference list are mentioned the text. Then look at it the other way around and check that all the references in the text are cited in the reference list.

The final manuscript:Remember that the paper you send to the journal must be prepared according to the rules of publishing and the instruction of the journal, in the right format, using proper unites, nomenclature, etc.

Page 41: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

The parts of the paperThis section takes each of the main parts of a research paper

and looks at what usually goes into them.

The titleThe perfect title tells the reader what the paper is about. It

should be concise, accurate and informative.

The object is to give the reader as much information as you

can in as few words as possible. Put the most important part

of your work at the start of title. Some journals have a limit

on the length of the title, a maximum number of word or a

maximum number of the letters.

Page 42: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Some journals will consider papers in a series, other will

not. If a paper is a report of a complete study, it is logical

that you write only one paper about it. If you start writing a

series papers, numbered I, II, III, etc., it means that you are

committed to publishing whole series in the same journal.

Very few journals will even look at a paper that is form the

middle of a series that has been published somewhere.

Paper in a series can also cause you problems, as the author,

because what you are going to do if No. 3 is accepted and

published and No. 2 rejected?

Page 43: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

The authors

Give the name of all authors in the style that the journal

wants them. For example, the first name in full, the middle

initial only, and the last name in full. Most journals do not

publish the qualifications or affiliations of the authors. The addresses

You should give an address for each author you mention on

the title page. That is, the address of author at the time the

work was done, which should represent the place at which

the work itself was done. If any authors have moved, then

include a footnote with their present address. You should

indicate the responsible person.

Page 44: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

The abstract

In scientific journals, an abstract is usually the same as

summary. However in dictionary they have different

definitions.

The abstract or summary should clearly summarize the

important findings of the paper. It should be brief but it

should contain hard facts. Look at the journal’s instruction,

usually they want to write abstract between 150 and 250

words.

Page 45: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

The four main elements of an abstract are:

1- Your objective, or what you intended to do. This might

already be outlined in the title.

2- A brief description of methods, if they are interesting, but

usually they are not.

3- Your main results, with actual values, not vague

adjectives.

4- An interpretation of the results in terms of their

significance and possible implications.

Page 46: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Keywords

Many journals will expect you to provide keywords which

can be used in an index to direct readers to the article. Some

journals want you to supply extra keywords that do not

appear in the title, usually up to ten words.

Page 47: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

The introduction

The introduction should answer the questions ‘ Why did you

do the work and what did you want to find out?’ To do this it

should contain three parts:The background to the work, to allow the reader to evaluate the

present work.

A brief review of the relevant literature and logical development that

led you to do the work.

A clear statement of the objectives of the work you will be

describing.

Remember that you should have references to support

everything you say.

Page 48: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Material and methods

You do not need to interpret anything in this section, so it is

an easy part of the paper to write.

Materials: Describe what you used, all the materials,

chemicals, animals, plants, equipment, geographic location,

etc.

Methods: Answer the question ’what did you do and how

did you do it?’ Describe your experiments in a logical

order. For example, in order of time, or size, or importance.

This will help to make the plane of your work easy to

understand for readers.

Page 49: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

The result and discussion section (sections)

This is basically a simple descriptive part of the paper,

dealing with what happened in your experiments. There are

several ways of writing a results sections. One is to present

your results making to comment to them. You will give

your own interpretations later in the discussion section.

Another approach is to interpret the results up to a point, to

make some connections between the different statements,

but give more detail in a separate discussion section. A third

way is to combine the results with a discussion of each

point. This last method will work best in a short or simple

experiment.

Page 50: Research Method in Animals Science (Part 5) Presented by: A. Riasi and M. A Edris Department of Animal Science روش تحقیق در علوم دامی.

Presentation of the result as tables or figures

The way you present the results can have a great effect on

the reader. If you are showing trends of grass changes then

a graph will have the most effect. If you want a strict

testing of results, where the exact value is important, then it

is best to use a table. Do not use graph to duplicate

information already in tables or text.

There is no need to have a photograph showing the

experimental plots. In fact, photographs are often not

necessary.
