• Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution?

• What does the research information ecosystem look like, and what are the challenges?

• How can the use of ORCID IDs in Research Management Systems and Publishing Systems address the challenges?

TopicThe role of ORCID in the research information ecosystem

Page 3: Research Management & Publishing (M. Jagerhorn)

• Reputation is key to success for the researcher

• The reputation of the research is evaluated... • when being recruited• when recruiting to attract talent• to get faculty funding & competitive grant funding

• Reputation is gained through the...• volume and quality of publications• research activities and amount

of funding• research group’s and university’s

collective reputation

3

Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution?Taking the perspective of reputation for the researcher

Page 4: Research Management & Publishing (M. Jagerhorn)

• Researchers often feel a stronger affiliation with the research group, department and domain they belong to than the overall university

• Still: researchers benefit from the university’s reputation and the university benefits from the researcher’s reputation

• University = Holding Company with many business units / research groups to care for:• Market the institution and position it as leading in selected domains• Facilitate collaborations• Provide support services to the researchers to enable them to succeed in

publishing, getting funding, recruiting talent• Invest in infrastructure, minimize administration

Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution?Connecting the dots for high quality information

Page 7: Research Management & Publishing (M. Jagerhorn)

• Individual researchers• ORCID ID, Employee number, Email address (e.g. LinkedIn), ResearcherID,

Scopus Author ID, ...

• Organisations• GRID, ISNI, Ringgold, ...

• Publications• CrossRef, mEDRA

• Research data• CrossRef, DataCite

• Thematic areas• MeSH, ISI Subject Categories, ...

7

Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution?IDs for connecting the dots

• The institution needs to be able to answer key questions in order to facilitate for the researchers to become successful• In what research fields are we strong or weak?• What collaborations do we have, which ones do we want to have?• Which researchers contribute well and which not so well to volume,

quality, funding, collaborations?• ...

• To answer these questions, the institution needs to proactively manage information on the researchers, their activities and results AND collect the information while not burdening the researcher

• This requires ORCID IDs to be used in internal as well as external systems to connect the dots and automatically reuse the data

• Develop an overall approach to proactively manage research information:• Make use systems that support the use of ORCID and other relevant IDs• Establish a process to ensure systematic use of ORCID IDs among the

researchers• Train staff at library and research office to use data and provide adequate

support towards end-users• Work with end user engagement to support

them use ORCID IDs and benefit from services for publishing, applying for grants and recruiting talent
