Into the Woods… Apologies to Disney Studios

Out of the house, past the old barns, along the wheat field, into the woods… the 12-year old only child went often. A fairy tale land, a safe place, free

from chores and confusion. Big fir trees wrapped around her, a stream ran through. She built a small tipi from hay barn canvas and hosted girls-only campouts.

As a teen at Outdoor School, she learned the forest’s scientific names and the woods came alive, became family. During college, she added river and desert knowing everything is connected to everything else. Wanting others to feel this deeply too, my life’s work came easily. CFI was born with the help of many.

Fast forward 30 years: There are children, teens, college kids, and the tipis, the little stream, the big river, the desert, the women’s trips. Thank you for steadfastly supporting this work. Nature and culture education in places like this conjure awe-filled moments that translate to forever change lives.

Highlights of recent years most certainly include relocating Professor Valley Field Camp to leased private land nearby. We are refreshing river and camp school lessons toward climate change, STEM education and jobs, service and citizen science projects, and green living. Learning outdoor skills, unplugging from media, and a slower pace all remain vital elements.

Over the last three years to present, CFI is blessed with capable, long-term Moab-based staff. Reducing turnover in key office and field positions is a milestone.

Connecting people and nature for 30 years: history, education and adventure

As financial and service charts inside show, we saw a dip during 2013 around the unexpected federal government shutdown, with strong recovery a year later. Growth in adult user days can be attributed to weekend Park tours, sell-outs on adult seminar trips, and expanded partnerships with like-minded tour and nonprofit groups.

Thank you to last year’s capital campaign contributors for making Phase I at the new camp possible. Thank you to volunteer Trustees who completed service and joined our Board. Special thanks to Chair, Steve Getz, for activating committees

on important projects. Evaluation, training, and mentoring by nonprofit and nature center consultants has been invaluable.

On a personal note, the December 2014 death of my stepson and fellow outfitter, Arlo Tejada, was a great loss in our family and the professional community. We will celebrate his life in April.

The woods aren’t always easy as we know – there are demands, dangers, deaths. But, I am not done yet. Heading onto my career

bucket list, I ask for YOUR support for our team (and a magic wand would be handy!). On the horizon: funding more year-round staff positions, expanding capacity at camp, and growth of scholarships, endowments, and legacy giving. I will continue to shepherd a few select special places and people seminar trips.

For the 12-year olds yet to come, we aim to keep the desert, the river, the woods… places to know, to go, for healing and joy... to call home.

People of all ages come for learning adventures and leave cfi programs refreshed and with a deeper appreciation for the environment and for each other.

A Review of CFI Milestones

30 -Year Anniversary CFI hosted celebration events to raise funds including dinner and Silent Auction at Pack Creek Ranch. Hosts Jane and Ken Sleight helped guide CFI in its early years. Thank you to all who donated and purchased auction items. CFI took part in the statewide Love UT Give UT online day of giving, expanded “CFI Days” at local businesses, hosted an open house, and volunteer work parties.

Professor Valley Field Camp at Taylor Ranch OpensPVFC officially opened with a ribbon cutting in April, 2014 and hosted a variety of school, college and adult service groups in its first season. It

wasn’t long until we discovered a family of badgers living nearby and delighted in other animal neighbors such as mule deer, coyotes, bull snakes, leopard frogs, native bees, and migrating song birds.

Farewell to Field Camp and the Big MoveIn fall 2013 we said goodbye to our Professor Valley Field Camp located on BLM land for 26 years. CFI hosted a farewell dinner, then closed the gate on the old camp. In 2014 we hosted service groups to reclaim this site.

Consult and MentoringThe Association of Nature Center Administrators (ANCA) conducted a Peer Consult (organizational audit) and continues ongoing support. The process, funded by a grant from the Harris Foundation, centers on how CFI can chart a sustainable future for the next 30 years.

New Youth ProgramsNavajo Guide in Training ProgramEach June since 2012, CFI hosts a “Native Teen Guide in Training Program” over eight days in Monument Valley and on the San Juan River. The kids get exposed to basic first aid, customer service, gear care, native plant identification, hiking, river running skills and safety, plus visit with Navajo tour operators. Thanks to generous support of Val A. Browning Foundation, North Face Explore Fund and private donors, kids learn their own backyard, prepare for jobs nearby and possible careers in tourism and natural resources.

“I want to salute you and CFI for your 30 year milestone. As a founder and creator of CFI, I hope you are looking back with pride at all you have accomplished and the many lives your educational programs have touched over three decades. Canyonlands and Utah’s redrock country are better off thanks to your tremendous efforts which are greatly appreciated by all of us here at The Nature Conservancy.”

– Dave Livermore, Utah State Director, The Nature Conservancy

Sustainable You! Summer Youth CampCFI launched the first Sustainable You! Summer Youth Camp, a unique summer experience for middle schoolers created and led by Roslynn Brain, PhD, of Utah State University in Moab, and supported by CFI. Kids spent four days with one overnight investigating a different theme each day through local businesses – energy, land, air, and food – and learned about solutions that help our community.

Kids who participate in CFI’s youth programs and camps leave excited and inspired by new experiences, and confident in new abilities.

In 2014, Canyonlands National Park celebrated its 50th anniversary year. CFI joined with the Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks and NAVTEC Expeditions over Labor Day Weekend 2014 to offer the first Bates Wilson Summer Youth Camp

for high school students. The camp was held in the Needles District to promote interest in natural resource and recreation careers.

Native Guide in Training Program, Sustainable You! and the Bates Wilson Youth Camp will be offered in 2015.

“…The Navajo Guide in Training Program was an enriching learning experience for everyone. It afforded each one of us an opportunity to live for a few days outside of our daily experiences or life as we know it. Even though we live in a rural area we do not fully experience the outdoor life… We, as Diné need to begin thinking about ways to convey messages about recreating on tribal land while preserving it.”

– Marlene Valentine, Chaperone

“Awesome program! The contrast between what our students know about the natural environment where we live (Pacific Northwest rainforest) and the desert Southwest, mixed with CFI’s enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff, provided an experience my students will remember the rest of their lives.”

– Russel Yates, Swan School, Spring 2013

School Groups: CFI’s Top Priority!Schools served: 83 school groups participated in river and field camp

experiences with ages from early elementary through college.

School types: CFI continues to successfully provide quality land and river programs for private as well as public school and charter school groups. Many schools return for trips year after year.

Group sizes: Groups as small as eight and as large as 67 students and their teachers were served.

School locations: School groups came from as near as cities in Utah and Colorado, to as far away as Alaska, California, Florida, New York, Montana, and Oregon.

Local Schools Initiative: CFI serves students from S.E. Utah including the Navajo Reservation with additional scholarship opportunities made possible through donors and grants. CFI’s Outdoor Science School helps boost interest and competencies in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

Adult and Family ProgramsBy request “custom” river, hiking and lodge-based trips for special family or friend reunions are a CFI specialty. These trips, and our once a month expert-led seminars, offer an intimate, in-depth experience, with shared lasting memories. Custom and adult trips continue to grow our membership and underwrite youth programs. In recent years, CFI expanded BLM Special Use Permit authorizations in the Moab and eastern Book Cliff regions, and started

new trips in the Cedar Mesa canyons east of Bluff and Blanding.

Partnerships grew with Naturalist Journeys, Uncommon Journeys, America By Rail, Road Scholar/Elderhostel, Museum of Moab, and the Moab Music Festival.

Past participants on our Navajo Mountain and Rainbow Bridge trail hiking trips helped fund a conservation corps trail crew to allow Navajo/CFI led trips to continue in this rugged, spectacular corner of Utah.

Young ProfessionalsAmeriCorps/VISTACFI joined a community-wide VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) grant program in 2012. VISTA members serve one year building capacity through recruitment, public outreach, fundraising, expanding volunteer opportunities, and improving office system efficiency. Special thanks to CFI’s VISTA members Curtis Tripp (2012-13), Hannah Boone (2013-14), and Evan Kieber (2014-15).

Apprentice Guides and InternsEvery year, a lucky handful of Apprentice Guides, Interns and AmeriCorps workers gain teaching, river running, cooking, guiding, gear repair, and administrative skills during their term with CFI. Our “graduates” carry on CFI’s values and mission as they move into positions in conservation, business, education, government, and community. They continue

sharing their skills, love, and care for the river and desert long after they leave and as they settle and start their own families.

Students, adults, and families come together from near and far to discover an appreciation for the colorado plateau through cfi programs.
