CFI-II Program Overview

* Program Duration - Total length of the program is 10 months – 4 months to sign up for the exam and 6 monthsto complete the practicum

* Program Fees - $300 for the exam. Reference set #1 is $90 - the reference set includes: NFPA 1, 2009; NFPA13, 2007; NFPA 25, 2008; NFPA 72, 2007; and NFPA 101, 2009. . Reference set #2 is $30 and includes:NFPA 24, 2007; and NFPA 220, 2009

* Payment - Payment must be received before the exam is taken. We accept credit cards and checks. Make checkspayable to NFPA and sent to the mailing address listed above.

* Exam Scheduling - You have 4 months from entering the program to take the exam. We require 3 weeks notice

to schedule the exam. You must send in the Exam Scheduling Form (located in Applications and Forms) whichindicates the date you are taking the exam, the proctor information – with a street mailing address for UPSdelivery, and your information – at least 3 weeks prior to your test date. You can mail or fax in your ExamScheduling Form.

* Exam – the exam is a four-hour open-book, 100 question, multiple-choice written exam. You can only bring inthe reference set listed above into the exam.

* Exam Results – You will receive your exam results by mail approximately two weeks after your test date. ExamResults will NOT be given over the phone.

* Practicum Phase – once you have taken the exam and PASSED, the practicum portion of the program must be

completed. The directions for the Practicum Phase are located in the Fire Inspector II Candidate Handbook starting on page 8. The forms for the Practicum Submittal Package are located in the Applications and Formssection of the Candidate Handbook. You must complete three inspections – Life Safety, Fire Protection Systems,and Hazardous Process and Materials. Your submittal package needs to include: The Supervisory AttestmentForm, a Practicum Submittal Checklist for each inspection, and a detailed inspection report which includes all theitems listed on page 9. Note you must complete one proposed code change using the Form for Proposals. Onceyou send in your complete practicum package your certificate will be issued.

* Retest – if you fail the exam you have 90 days to retest. The retest application is in Applications and Formssection. The cost of the retest is $75.

* Recertification – Once you have been certified, you must recertify every 3 years. The form is available online.

The NFPA Certification Department will mail you a reminder approximately 3 months prior to yourrecertification date. You must earn continuing education credit points within the three year timeframe from thedate your certificate was issued to the date the certificate expires. The fee for recertification is $130.

NFPA

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is a nonprofit membershiporganization founded in 1896 and having today more than 75,000 members. The missionof NFPA is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life.

NFPA activities generally fall into two broad, interrelated areas: technical and educational.NFPA’s technical activity involves development, publication, and dissemination of morethan 300 timely consensus codes and standards intended to minimize the possibility andeffects of fire and other hazards. NFPA codes and standards are developed by nearly 250technical committees, each of which represents a balance of affected interests. More than7,000 representatives serve voluntarily on NFPA committees. NFPA codes and standards, which are developed under the approved process of the American National StandardsInstitute (ANSI), are widely used as a basis of legislation and regulation at all levels of government. In some way, virtually every building, process, service, design, and installationin society today is affected by codes and standards developed through NFPA’s system.

NFPA’s educational activities are focused on motivating and enabling the public to be safer.Fire Prevention Week, which NFPA has sponsored for over 80 years, represents theassociation's largest annual public safety campaign. The newest addition to NFPA’s publiceducation product line is Risk Watch™ , a comprehensive school-based injury preventioncurriculum that teaches children and their families how to protect themselves fromunintentional injuries. NFPA’s Center for High-Risk Outreach develops safety programs toreduce deaths and injuries, primarily from fires, burns, and falls, among high-risk populations: the very young, older adults, and the impoverished. The award-winning Sparky the Fire Dog® website entertains and teaches kids about fire safety.

Fire Inspector Certification Program

The overall mission of NFPA’s certification program is to enhance human andorganizational performance as related to the use and application of NFPA codes andstandards.

Program History

The NFPA Fire Inspector Certification Program was created in response to repeatedrequests by local entities, state agencies, and national organizations for certification programsfounded on the NFPA 1031 Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan

Examiner, and other applicable NFPA codes and standards. These requests suggested thatNFPA be the main catalyst and ultimate certifying body for such programs.

In late 1996, an independent organization conducted research that validated this need. Thecurrent Fire Inspector I Certification Program has been operational since 1998.

In response to further requests, NFPA has also developed this Fire Inspector II Certificationprogram as well as the Fire Plan Examiner Certification program.

Program Fees

The fee for certifying directly through NFPA is $300 USD. Taking the Written Examination asecond time requires an additional $75 USD retest fee. Agencies who partner with NFPA tosponsor the Certified Fire Inspector II Program will assess and collect their own fees.

If you are applying through one of these Partnering Agencies, please contact the Agency

directly to determine their fee schedule. A list of Partnering Agencies can be found in Appendix I or on the NFPA Certification web page at www.nfpa.org/certification

Application Acceptance

An application is accepted only when both of these requirements are met:

All required information is provided

The fee is enclosed

Once Accepted

You will have to take and pass a Written Examination within 4 months of entering theCFI-II Program. You are allowed an additional 90 days if you need to retake the

Written Examination .

Applicants who pass the Written Examination must complete a Practicum Phase within 6 months of the examination.

Complete the CFI-II Program by submitting practicum verification forms to NFPA within 6months of passing the examination. In the case of those working with a Partnering Agency,please submit practicum verification forms to the Program Administrator.

The Examination

The four-hour, open book, 100-question, multiple-choice Written Examination is

designed to evaluate the applicant’s knowledge of fire inspection principles and codeapplication skills at the level of Fire Inspector II (as defined in NFPA 1031).

During the Written Examination, applicants will be expected to interpret and apply code-related material in response to the test questions.

The Written Examination can be taken in one of two ways: As directed by the NFPAProgram Administrator via an NFPA approved proctor; usually at a university or college-testing center (where a fee may be charged, for which the applicant is responsible) or underthe direction of the Program Administrator of a Partnering Agency.

The Program Administrator or proctor should be consulted for Written Examinationscheduling.

The Written Examination must be taken within 4 months of entering the CFI-IIProgram. The Written Examination will be evaluated and the results communicated to theapplicant or Partnering Agency Program Administrator. Applicants, who successfully passthe Written Examination, will then enter the Practicum Phase.

Applicants, who do not pass the Written Examination, have 90 days from notification tosubmit a retest exam request, a $75.00 retest fee, and retake the exam.

EXAM PREPARATION/REFERENCE MATERIALS

The Fire Inspector II Written Examination is a four-hour open-book exam. Remember, it isyour responsibility to obtain materials you will need for study purposes and to have presentduring the Written Examination .

Important Note: A number of the CFI-II examination questions are general knowledgeitems and require the examinee to recall the correct answer. These questions weredeveloped from the IFSTA Fire Inspection & Code Enforcement Manual , 7th Edition, which isnot permitted at the examination.

The NFPA Fire Inspector II Written Examination is based on the job performancerequirements for the Fire Inspector II level that are defined in Chapter 5 of NFPA 1031,Standard for Professional Qualification for Fire Inspector and Plans Examiner , 2009 edition. (See Appendix II )

Review the layout of the material that will be used as references during the WrittenExamination. It is not necessary to memorize the references, but it is important to know

what information may be covered, and how to quickly locate that information. Look fortables in the reference materials that summarize requirements; this can save you time during the examination. Know the format of documents such as the Life Safety Code® occupancy chapters. This will help you find specific information quickly during the examination.

The Sample Code Research Problem (See Appendix III ) guides the applicant throughsolving a problem by researching a code. The ability to look at a question or problem relatedto a code issue, identify the relevant code or standard, and then locate the correct answer isone of the most essential skills a Fire Inspector must develop. Try the activity on your own,and then look at the solution that is provided to see if you are on track. Follow the paththrough the codes until you can see how the problem was addressed and answered. During the written examination, understanding this process will help you to identify the issue, anduse code documents to answer the questions.

Appendix IV contains 25 sample questions to help you become familiar with similar typesof questions found on the Written Examination. On the actual examination, you will have 4hours to complete 100 questions. This is an average of 2.4 minutes per question. Theanswers to the sample questions can be found on the last page of Appendix IV .

Begin preparing for the examination by reading the IFSTA Fire Inspection and Code Enforcement Manual, 7th Edition. As stated previously, it is very important that you read thisbook. Your chances for success in passing the exam will be greatly reduced if you do notstudy it. Next, begin reviewing the layout of the resource materials. For example, NFPA 1,Fire Code ™ , covers all aspects of fire protection and prevention utilized in other NFPA

codes and standards. Each NFPA document laid out in the same way and divided intosimilar sections, beginning with administration and definitions, followed by the specificrequirements in the code.

Additional Materials - Beyond the Codes In addition to the seven NFPA resources listed above, the NFPA Fire and Life Safety Inspection Manual , 8th Edition, and NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 20th Edition, are excellentresources for study and review.

Sample Question and Analysis The following steps will assist in answering exam questions.

Analyze the Question - This is an occupancy question.

Find the right reference document – Means of egress provisions and other occupancy questions are

addressed by NFPA 101, Life Safety Code , 2009 edition. Annex D of NFPA 101 gives you

a numerical listing of all NFPA codes and standards.

The following suggestions, regulations, and procedures pertain to every applicanttaking the Written Examination :

You must have a valid photo ID at the test center.

Bring three sharpened soft-lead (No. 2) pencils or mechanical pencils and a good eraser.Pencils and erasers will NOT be furnished at the center.

You are permitted to use a calculator during the Written Examination . Only silent, hand-held, battery-operated (programmable or non-programmable) calculators, without paper-tape printing capabilities, can be used. Calculator malfunction during a test does notconstitute grounds for challenging test scores or requesting additional testing time.

Bring a watch. You will not be permitted to continue the test beyond the establishedfour-hour time limit.

You should bring those NFPA reference materials that were identified in this handbook. All materials taken into the test center must be published and copyrighted and aresubject to review by the test center proctor. No handwritten materials will be allowed. The IFSTA manual and the NFPA Fire and Life Safety Inspection Manual are not allowed atthe examination.

Electronic versions of the reference materials are not permitted to be used at the testsite.

Visitors are not permitted at the test center.

You may do scratch work only in the margins of the test book. Scratch paper is notpermitted. Do not write on, mark in or tab the pages of your reference code booksduring the examination. Doing so will be grounds for dismissal from the test site.

If you wish to leave the room during the test, you must secure the proctor’s permission.

Smoking, phones, and pagers are not permitted in the testing area.

The NFPA shall have the right to revoke or invalidate any examination score with or without a finding of fault or misconduct if data forensic analysis or other credibleevidence establishes a reasonable possibility that a score is not valid or the integrity orsecurity of the exam was compromised.

Examination Security: Failure to follow candidate instructions regarding examinationsecurity will result in your application being voided and forfeiture of your application fee.Conduct that results in violation of examination security or disrupts the administrationof the examination could result in cancellation of your examination and dismissal fromthe testing center. In addition, your examination will be considered void and will not bescored. Examples of misconduct include, but are not limited to, the following: writing onanything other than the margins of your test booklet, looking at another candidate'sexamination, or talking with other candidates anytime during the entire examinationperiod. You are particularly cautioned not to do so after you have completed the

examination, as other candidates in the area might be taking a break and still not havecompleted the examination. You may not attend the examination only to review or audittest materials. You may not copy any portion of the examination for any reason. Noexamination information may leave the test room under any circumstances. This includesmemorizing questions for distribution to any other person. No unauthorized persons will be admitted into the testing area. It is very important for you to note all examination

content is strictly confidential. You may only communicate about the test, or questionson the test, using the appropriate forms provided within the examination delivery system. At no other time, before, during or after the examination, may you communicateorally, electronically or in writing with any person or entity about the content of theexamination or individual examination questions.

The Practicum Phase

The objective of the practicum phase is to provide the Certified Fire Inspector II

candidate with an opportunity to demonstrate the application of the skills and knowledgethat are used on the job through actual field inspections.

Successful completion of the practicum is a requirement for certification. Applicants have 6months from passing the written examination to complete and submit the practicum phase.

The Certified Fire Inspector II practicum phase requires that the Fire Inspector II candidatecomplete three comprehensive inspections. Properties selected for the required inspectionsshould be complex and provide multiple issues to address. Suggested properties includehardware stores, auto repair/auto body shops, and places of assembly, high schools, orhospitals.

The candidate must complete the practicum inspections with separate properties used ineach inspection.

The practicum inspections are based on the requirements of Chapter 5 of NFPA 1031 ,Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner, 2009 edition.

Practicum Inspections

Inspection 1: Life Safety

Inspect a multi-use building for life safety compliance. During the inspection: identify

the construction type of the building and separation walls, analyze the egress componentsprovided in the building, evaluate the emergency planning and preparedness measures

provided, determine the fire growth potential for the building and its contents, and

calculate the occupant load for all spaces in the building.

Inspection 2: Fire Protection Systems

For this inspection the building must be provided with automatic sprinklers and at least one

additional fire suppression system, such as a kitchen hood, CO2, ESFR, deluge, clean agent,dry chemical, or other similar systems. (Portable fire extinguishers do not satisfy thisrequirement.)

Inspection 3: Hazardous Process and Materials

Inspect a facility that has a process or operation that utilizes flammable or hazardousmaterials. During the inspection; evaluate the equipment, process and operations; verify thecompliance of the storage, handling and use of the materials involved; and verify that the fireprotection and suppression systems provided are operational and appropriate for theapplication.

Inspection Notes:

Candidates from jurisdictions without suitable properties should arrange to complete therequired inspections in a jurisdiction with available locations. At least one of the propertiesincluded in the submittal package should be a building that is under construction or majorrenovation.

The Practicum Submittal Package

A Practicum Submittal Checklist (Appendix I) and a detailed inspection report must becompleted for each of the practicum inspections. In addition, the submittal shall include the

following items for each property: A. The name and a description of the property used for the practicum inspection.

The descriptions should include the occupancy classification, building construction classification, fire protection systems provided, hazards associated with the property and the specific occupancy type, and the fire growth potentialof the property.

B. A job aid or checklist designed to assist in this inspection.

C. A draft written procedure for inspections in each of the occupancy typesincluded in the practicum exercise. Each procedure should include instructionsfor the use of the checklist developed for the inspection.

D. A list of applicable codes, standards and local ordinances applicable for eachinspection must be presented.

E. Draft written correspondence to the property owner outlining the findings of theinspection.

F. The submittal package must include a proposed code change (Appendix I, only one required per package) for one of the codes or standards identified in item Dabove. The proposed code change will be identified and the technical rationalefor the change documented using the format required by the code developmentorganization, i.e., a completed NFPA proposal form.

The completed package will be evaluated for technical accuracy by the candidate’s supervisor

or mentor using the Supervisory Attestment Form (Appendix I) provided. The completedpackage, Practicum Submittal Checklist , and the Supervisory Attestment Form are then submitted toNFPA or the Program Partnering Agency for evaluation and credit.

Once the audit is successfully completed, you will receive your certification by mail fromNFPA.

RECERTIFICATION

Once you have been certified as a Fire Inspector II, recertification every three years is

mandatory. It is important that you begin accumulating the required points as soon aspossible.

The applicant must submit documented evidence of a total of 60 credit points from thefollowing categories:

Course certificates

Letters of attestment from course sponsors

College transcripts

Letters from employers

Other evidence as required

All training or instruction must be clearly related to the Fire Inspector and Plan Examinerfield of practice. If college courses are declared for training hours, the same course cannot betaken twice within the 3-year period, and the applicant must convert credit hours to actualhours spent in the classroom.

IMPORTANT – READ THIS SECTION FIRST

I. Receipt and Delivery of the Examination Prior to shipping the exam(s), SMT will notify you (Proctor) by email that the exams have been shipped. You

must immediately open the shipping container and inventory the contents against the shipping manifest. The

Shipment Receipt Confirmation Form must be completed and faxed to SMT to acknowledge receipt and insure

security. Secure the examination materials.

Schroeder Measurement Technologies (SMT) will ship the Examinations to you (Proctor) approximately 48

hours prior to the scheduled examination. If you do not receive the examinations within this timeframe

immediately contact SMT and the NFPA Certification Department. See contact information below.

All examinations, taken or not, must be mailed back to SMT within 24 hours after the scheduled exam date in

the shipping container provided. If an unexpected situation arises that affects the cancellation of the previously

scheduled Written Examination, immediately notify SMT and the NFPA Certification Department.

Carefully review the instructions in the SMT Test Administration Manual shipped with the examinations.

II. Administration of the Examination

Do not view, make copies, distribute, or discuss examination contents with anyone.

Administer the Examination on the scheduled date and time, maintaining the time allotment.

Only the approved Reference Publications (see page 3) in paper (not electronic) are allowed at the Examination

Handwritten materials are not allowed.

Pencils and erasers will not be furnished at the examination site.

Candidates are permitted to use only hand-held calculators. A calculator malfunction does not constitute grounds

for challenging the examination or requesting additional time.

Candidates will not be permitted to continue the Examination beyond the 4-hour time limit. Visitors are not permitted at the examination site.

Candidates may do scratch work only in the margins of the Examination book. Scratch paper is not permitted

However, only answers recorded on the answer sheet will be graded.

If candidate(s) wish to leave the room during the Examination, they must secure Proctor’s permission and you

(Proctor) must secure their Examination.

Smoking, phones, and pagers are not permitted in the examination area.

5.1* General. The Fire Inspector II shall meet the jobperformance requirements defined in Chapter 4 andSections 5.2 through 5.4.

5.2* Administration. This duty involves conductingresearch, interpreting codes, implementing policy,testifying at legal proceedings, and creating forms and

job aids, according to the following job performancerequirements.

5.2.1 Process a permit application, given a specificrequest, so that the application is evaluated and apermit is issued or denied in accordance with the

applicable codes, standards, policies, and proceduresof the jurisdiction.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Permit applicationprocess and applicable codes, standards, policies,and procedures of the jurisdiction.

(B) Requisite Skills. The application of the requisiteknowledge.

5.2.2 Process a plan review application, given aspecific request, so that the application is evaluatedand processed in accordance with the applicablecodes and standards and the policies of the

jurisdiction.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Plan review applicationprocess, code requirements of the jurisdiction, andpolicies and procedures of the jurisdiction.

(B) Requisite Skills. The ability to communicateorally and in writing on matters related to coderequirements, policies, and procedures of the

jurisdiction.

5.2.3* Investigate complex complaints, given areported situation or condition, so that complaintinformation is recorded, the investigation process isinitiated, and the complaint is resolved in accordancewith the applicable codes and standards and the

policies of the jurisdiction.

5.2.4* Recommend modifications to the adoptedcodes and standards of the jurisdiction, given a firesafety issue, so that the proposed modificationsaddress the problem, need, or deficiency.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. State statutes or localordinances establishing or empowering the agency toadopt, enforce, and revise codes and standards; thelegal instruments establishing or adopting codes andstandards; and the development and adoptionprocess for fire and life safety legislation orregulations.

applicable codes and standards.

5.3.2* Identify the occupancy classifications of amixed-use building, given a description of the uses,so that each area is classified in accordance withapplicable codes and standards.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Occupancy classification,applicable codes and standards, operational features,and fire hazards presented by various occupancies.

5.3.3* Evaluate a building’s area, height, occupancyclassification, and construction type, given anapproved set of plans and construction features, sothat it is verified that the building is in accordance withapplicable codes and standards.

5.3.4* Evaluate fire protection systems and equipmentprovided for life safety and property protection, givenfield observations of the facility and documentation,the hazards protected, and the system specifications,so that the fire protection systems provided are

approved for the occupancy or hazard beingprotected.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Applicable codes andstandards for fire protection systems, basic physicalscience as it relates to fire behavior and firesuppression, implications and hazards associatedwith system operation, installation techniques andacceptance inspection, testing and reports ofmaintenance of completed installations, and use andfunction of various systems.(B) Requisite Skills. The ability to recognizeproblems, use codes and standards, and readreports, plans, and specifications.

5.3.5 Analyze the egress elements of a building orportion of a building, given observations made duringa field inspection, so that means of egress elementsare provided and located in accordance withapplicable codes and standards and deficienciesare identified, documented, and reported inaccordance with the policies of the jurisdiction.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Acceptable means ofegress devices.

(B) Requisite Skills. The ability to calculate egressrequirements, read plans, and make decisions relatedto the adequacy of egress.

5.3.6* Evaluate hazardous conditions involvingequipment, processes, and operations, given fieldobservations and documentation, so that theequipment, processes, or operations are installed inaccordance with applicable codes and standardsand deficiencies are identified, documented, andreported in accordance with the policies of the

jurisdiction.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Applicable codes andstandards, accepted fire protection practices, firebehavior, ignition sources, safe housekeepingpractices, and additional reference materials relatedto protection of hazardous processes and codeenforcement.

(B) Requisite Skills. The ability to observe,communicate, interpret codes, recognize problems,and make decisions.

5.3.7* Evaluate emergency planning andpreparedness procedures, given existing or proposedplans and procedures and applicable codes andstandards, so that compliance is determined.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Occupancy requirementsfor emergency evacuation plans, fire safety programsfor crowd control, roles of agencies and individuals inimplementation and development of emergencyplans.

(B) Requisite Skills. The ability to comparesubmitted plans and procedures with applicablecodes and standards adopted by the jurisdiction.

5.3.8 Verify code compliance for storage, handling,and use of flammable and combustible liquids andgases, given field observations and inspectionguidelines from the authority having jurisdiction, sothat deficiencies are identified, documented, andreported in accordance with the applicable codes andstandards and the policies of the jurisdiction.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Flammable andcombustible liquids properties and hazards, materialsafety data sheet, safe handling practices, applicablecodes and standards, fire protection systems andequipment approved for the material, fire behavior,safety procedures, and storage compatibility.

(B) Requisite Skills. The ability to identify typical firehazards associated with processes or operationsutilizing flammable and combustible liquids and toobserve, communicate, interpret codes, recognizeproblems, and make decisions.



5.3.9 Evaluate code compliance for the storage,handling, and use of hazardous materials, given fieldobservations, so that deficiencies are identified,documented, and reported in accordance with theapplicable codes and standards and the policies ofthe jurisdiction.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Hazardous materialsproperties and hazards, material safety data sheet,safe handling practices, applicable codes andstandards, fire protection systems and equipmentapproved for the material, fire behavior, safetyprocedures, chemical reactions, and storagecompatibility.

(B) Requisite Skills. The ability to identify firehazards associated with processes or operationsutilizing hazardous materials and to observe,communicate, interpret codes, recognizeproblems, and make decisions.

5.3.10* Determine fire growth potential in a building or

space, given field observations or plans, so that thecontents, interior finish, and construction elements areevaluated for compliance, and deficiencies areidentified, documented, and corrected in accordancewith the applicable codes and standards and thepolicies of the jurisdiction.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Basic fire behavior; flamespread and smoke development ratings of contents,interior finishes, building construction elements,decorations, decorative materials, and furnishings;and safe housekeeping practices.

(B) Requisite Skills. The ability to observe,communicate, interpret codes and standards,

recognize hazardous conditions,and make decisions.

5.3.11* Verify compliance with constructiondocuments, given a performance-based design, sothat life safety systems and building servicesequipment are installed, inspected, and tested toperform as described in the engineering documentsand the operations and maintenance manual thataccompanies the design, so that deficiencies areidentified, documented, and reported in accordancewith the applicable codes and standards and thepolicies of the jurisdiction.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Applicable codes andstandards for installation and testing of fire protectionsystems, means of egress, and building servicesequipment.

(B) Requisite Skills. The ability to witness anddocument tests of fire protection systems and buildingservices equipment.

5.3.12* Verify code compliance of heating, ventilation,air conditioning, and other building service equipment

and operations, given field observations, so that thesystems and other equipment are maintained inaccordance with applicable codes and standards anddeficiencies are identified, documented, and reportedin accordance with the policies of the jurisdiction.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Types, installation,

maintenance, and use of building service equipment;operation of smoke and heat vents; installation ofkitchen cooking equipment (including hoods andducts), laundry chutes, elevators, and escalators;and applicable codes and standards adopted by the

jurisdiction.

(B) Requisite Skills. The ability to observe,recognize problems, interpret codes and standards,and write reports.

5.4 Plans Review. This duty involves field verificationof shop drawings, plans, and construction documentsto ensure that they meet the intent of applicablecodes and standards for fire and life safety, according

to the following job performance requirements.

5.4.1* Classify the occupancy, given a set of plans,specifications, and a description of a building, so thatthe classification is made in accordance with theapplicable codes and standards and the policies ofthe jurisdiction.

(A) Requisite Knowledge. Occupancy classification,applicable codes and standards, regulations,operational features, and fire hazards presented byvarious occupancies.

(B) Requisite Skills. The ability to read plans.5.4.2* Compute the maximum allowable occupant

(A) Requisite Knowledge.
