3 Report of the testing of the septic tank saddle to AS_NZS1546.1

INTRODUCTION

The saddle provides access into horizontal axis septic tanks and allows a permanent means of accessing the tank for service procedures. BioSeptic’s certifying body SAI Global specified the parts of the septic tank Standard AS/NZS 1546.1:2008 to which it required the saddle to be tested. As the saddle is a tank accessory and not a tank, the saddle could only be tested to certain parts of the Standard. BioSeptic Pty Ltd has tested the saddle to the relevant sections of AS/NZS1546.1:2008. The testing has been audited and approved by SAI Global. SAI Global has accredited the saddle as a septic tank accessory and added it to BioSeptic’s Licence No SMKH21556 schedule. The Section and Appendix numbers refer to those in the Standard. Appendix K is the top load test and requires the top load to be measured in kilonewtons (Kn), which is a measurement of force. Most people are more familiar with kilopascals (kpa) which is a pressure measurement. The force of 5Kn is equal to the pressure of 5kpa. The licence and schedule can be viewed by following this link: http://register.saiglobal.com/client/schedule.aspx?setID=SF01&custID=AS122916&appCertNo=SMKH21556 . OVERVIEW OF THE PRODUCT

The BioSeptic composite resin saddle is designed to fit over the existing tank access opening. It is bonded to the tank using a proprietary sealer. The original cover and any riser are removed. The saddle is supplied with a separate sealing ring that accommodates the access cover. If the tank is buried deeply below ground level, the sealing ring and cover are extended to ground level by one of two methods:

1. The sealing ring fits to a cut length of Flowtite DN 600 PN 1 fibreglass water pipe

2. The sealing ring also fits the BioSeptic collection well access cover support turrets The sealing ring is fitted with an 8mm diameter ‘O’ ring that is compressed when the cover is bolted into the ring. This prevents water ingress into the tank. The cover is secured in place by three stainless steel bolts. The bolts and the lifting point are protected by rubber flush fitting caps. The saddle and its risers are designed to fit a horizontal axis tank of 1525mm +/- 25mm diameter. The saddle will be able to fit some smaller or larger diameter tanks with the use of packers. The Installation Instructions provide more details of the saddle.

COMPLIANCE WITH AS/NZS1546.1:2008

These are the sections specified by SAI Global 8.2.1 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS – GENERAL

(a) The only part of the saddle assembly exposed to sunlight is the access cover. The colour of the covers does fade over time, but of over several thousand covers installed on tanks in Australia since 2009 none have suffered any UV degradation that has affected the cover’s performance or even raised a customer complaint. The covers have been in use now in Australia for seven and a half years which is half of the warranty period required by the Standard.

(b) The covers and supporting turrets are batch tested on arrival in Australia and there has never been a failure. The use of the access covers and turrets to date has been on collection wells, and collection wells used as water tanks. There are many tanks located in domestic driveways without any user comments or complaints. A picture is attached of an access cover on a water tank located in the McDonalds Restaurant carpark in Camden NSW. The tank and cover have been installed for more than five years.

APPENDIX K TOP LOAD TEST

510KGS BLOCK TEST

The test was conducted by Ray Halls, BioSeptic Pty Ltd Quality Assurance manager and Bob Martin, BioSeptic’s director. Place: BioSeptic production factory, 49C Smeaton grange Road, Smeaton grange, NSW 2567 Date of test 20th December 2016. Table K1 provides a test top load of 5kn for the minimum depth of cover of 0mm, i.e. ground level.

The saddle was placed on a Ri Industries 3000 litre tank in a frame to prevent it rolling.

The access cover and sealing ring were fitted to a 1000mm piece of Flowtite fibre glass pipe.

The BioSeptic 250 x 250 bearing block with rubber pad and 510kgs concrete test block was placed on the cover and sealing ring.

The test started at 9.25am 20th December 2016 and lasted two hours, twice the requirement of section K4.2.

Result:

There were no cracks in the access cover, sealing ring or saddle. No deflection in the cover was observed.

510kgs weight on access cover. 5kn or 5kpa.

TEST TO SIMULATE INSTALLING THE SADDLE DEEPER BELOW GROUND.

The tests were conducted by Ray Halls, BioSeptic Pty Ltd Quality Assurance manager. The December testing was interrupted by the closure of BioSeptic for the Christmas holidays. Place: BioSeptic production factory, 49C Smeaton grange Road, Smeaton Grange, NSW 2567 Date of tests 22nd December 2016 and 16th January 2017. Observers and assistants present: Bob Martin: BioSeptic management representative. Neale Cutting: Client representative Access Septic Products Pty Ltd (Dec. test only) Rob Anderson: Client representative Access Septic Products Pty Ltd (Dec. test only) The same tank, saddle, sealing ring and cover was placed in the BioSeptic top load test frame. A hydraulic ram and force gauge were used to measure the force on the access cover, turret and saddle. The following forces were applied to the assembly and these observations were recorded. 22nd December 2017 Force Duration Observation 5kn 10 minutes No deflection 12kn 5 minutes 6mm deflection in the cover

Reduction in the space under the saddle. 15kn 5 minutes 10mm deflection in the cover

Reduction in the space under the saddle. 16th January 2017 – Test continued after the test frame was strengthened Conducted by Ray Halls, observed and photographed by Bob Martin Force Duration Observation 15kn 4 hours 10mm deflection in the cover

No cracks of breaks The cover and saddle showed no permanent deflection

These tests showed that the saddle assembly was of robust design and construction and suited for its intended use.
