Day-by-Day Programme

Day 1, August 21 Getting to know each other – common session with OAT volunteers The training started with the introduction of volunteers to each other. There were OAT and MTM trainings simultaneously in the same venue. The welcome session was common for participants of two trainings. Having introduced themselves the volunteers continued working in the corresponding groups. Development of the training agenda During this training it was decided together with hosting organisation to experiment with the training agenda for evoking, empowering and enhancing participants’ activeness, capabilities to take responsibilities. Thus it was suggested to the volunteers to develop the training agenda. Moreover the logic behind this experiment is to meet needs and interests of the volunteers as much as possible. Long in advance the volunteers received a draft of the training agenda with proposal to amend it according their needs and interests. The suggestions of the volunteers were:

• Our projects and how do we fell with them; • Our plans at the beginning of the project and now; • Youthpass; • What are our opportunities after EVS; • Methods of work/cooperation with Ukrainians; • Solving conflict situations/misunderstandings with HO; • What is after shock...cultural shock; • Visit to local church on Sunday; • OUR vision Ukraine; • Evaluation of the training.

After discussions the volunteers together with the trainer worked out the training agenda drawn above.

6 Follow-up of OAT personal planning During this session we referred to the volunteers' project plans developed during on-arrival training and to the letters to themselves they wrote at the end of OAT. Before the midterm evaluation training the volunteers were asked to bring their project plans to evaluate their development for the period between the trainings. Marta achieved the goal "to communicate fluently in Ukrainian". Still need to work on two more items of the plan: To organize a team in Euroclub to develop training on project management and to deliver a project together with Euroclub members Agata has found the organization which has a potential to help her with her own project idea. She wanted to work with children and managed to do this in tent camp in Odessa. She also wanted to start working on different projects in the office of HO but thinks to refuse from this idea. Agata managed to learn Ukrainian language and communicates now much better then after arrival to Ukraine. As well she managed to work with children and was helping them to study mathematics. Kamila planned to work with school children on journalism and managed to work with two groups of children. The idea to organize a school radio did not come true as the teachers at school resisted to support it. Plans to work with different euroclubs were achieved only once while organizing meeting of euroclubs from Lviv area. Justyna’s plans were achieved. She developed her work schedule and achieved good result in language learning. She also planned to make her lessons interesting for her students and she believes the students are satisfied. Andrzej was sure that he achieved more than planned Joanna didn’t remember what she had written in the plan, but started to work with eiroclubs and still plans to work with other euroclubs in Svalyava. In general the volunteers were satisfied with their achievements upon their project plans. After sharing their achievements it was the time for reading the “letters to yourself” written at the end of OAT. The reading appeared to be very personal exercise but the atmosphere was quite positive and the group continued chatting about their letters.

Day 2, August 22

Midterm evaluation This issue was very important for the volunteers as everyone was willing to share the experiences for the period followed on-arrival training but the feeling was that everyone was waiting for the others to start. Somehow we started with the general impressions from the projects, daily life in Ukraine, cooperation between the volunteers and cooperation with the hosting organisation. The results of the evaluation are provided below. During this session we have also changed the training agenda, as talking about the work and tasks of volunteers, relations with the others and needs of volunteers the new topics for the sessions emerged and participants gave priorities to the issues of cooperation and dealing with Ukrainians and to the project approach towards their work and particularly YiA projects.

After sharing their learning achievements in couples volunteers were suggested to think of what they want and still need to learn. They were doing this through self assessment form adopted from European Portfolio for youth leaders and youth workers and Competence Improvement map developed by the TALE training course team. As the self-assessment process is not an easy exercise and requires deeper self reflection we have only started with this and volunteers had about 40 minutes. Anyway they were strongly encouraged to continue this work during and after the training. In order to support the learning process volunteers were explained the roles of different actors able to provide support and also the importance of feedback from those actors. Giving a feedback is also not easy and requires corresponding skills and should happen according to the rules. So the volunteers received the rules of how to give and receive feedback and were practicing these rules in couples upon their self assessment.

15

Pulling together experience for future volunteers This session was devoted to the volunteers’ task to develop a guide book for the future volunteers willing to work with euroclubs in Ukraine. The guide book should be based on the working experience of volunteers. Before starting to think about the guide book itself we imagined ourselves as newcomers EVS volunteers willing to work with children and particularly willing to organize activities in euroclub. The group has generated loads of "WHY?" and "HOW?" questions. These questions have drawn a starting point for the booklet content design. Lots of ideas were generated on what should be inside of the booklet. Further the volunteers were dealing with the basic issues about their experience of work in euroclub. What is Euroclub? Extra curricula activities for children Lessons about Europe, European Union, European values, intercultural dialogue To open for children new ideas, new thoughts To develop skills What can we do?

• Exercises, • Projects • Games • Outdoor activities • Meetings with celebrities/famous people

What for? Why do we do this?

• To get experience • To encourage children not to think according stereotypes • To acknowledge children with European countries • To acknowledge children with European Union and how it functions • To develop non-formal learning approach in education • To prove the children that studying is not boring process and they should not be ignorant towards learning. • For the idea

For whom? • For ourselves (to get experience) • For children • For teachers • For Europe

How to start? Useful links/further reading During the session the group managed to revise each volunteer’s personal experience, to develop and discuss templates for tools' description, content of the booklet, design and layout of the publication. The tasks were also divided and the deadlines for the work were set. Good practices “Our vision of Ukraine” As it was mentioned above the on-arrival training was taking place at the same venue. During the development of the training agenda the volunteers suggested to share their vision of Ukraine and develop a presentation about their life for the new volunteers. Day 3, August 23 Youth in Action continuing working with young people Sunday morning volunteers decided to visit church service in Bibrka. We started to work at noon and dealt with Youth in Action programme. The session was devoted to YiA in general and particular to what further opportunities the programme offers for EVS volunteers and how the volunteers can use these opportunities. After a short presentation of the programme we continued with question and answers, discovering different support tools for concerning YiA available in the Internet.

16

Specifics of working with Ukrainians. Solving conflicts with HO This session was devoted mostly for the problem solving in the intercultural settings. We were looking for the solutions of concrete problems/hard issues from the daily life of volunteers, mostly related to the working relations between volunteers and Ukrainians they work with (Hosting organization, staff of different institutions…). The details of this session are left out as we were examining concrete cases with concrete people. The general outcome of the session worked out by the volunteers is that there were communication gaps. We realized that people were accepting and perceiving different things as they used to in their country but it didn’t work out in another country. The "recipe" to solve problems was to remove the communication gaps. Not to afraid to ask questions and say "I don’t understand why…" The group tested the "recipe" on their concrete examples and it worked. What next after EVS Evening session was relaxing and concentrated a lot on imaginations and dreams of volunteers. Bearing in mind all the discussions, self assessments, learning plans, perspectives after EVS, pulling together all the experience the volunteers got till the moment they were imagining themselves and their fellow volunteers after their voluntary service. The participants were working in triples sharing their visions of each other in the close future and shortly after the end EVS. The visions were different, serious and funny but what is interesting they all were somehow related to education, learning, teaching, youth work and training, Youth in Action. The visions and dreams of volunteers graphically designed are provided below.

17

Day 4, August 24 A national holiday in Ukraine – Independence Day. Often the country evaluates the period of independence, reviews achievements and loses; successes and failures. We were evaluating the training: Final evaluation of the training 1. How much did this training fulfil your expectations? Set some examples please.

• I’m glad because we could create our training programme and we talked about the most

important issues for us. It was interesting training :) • I know what to do after EVS and in the next 6 month • Mid term for me was fully satisfactory • It was better than I thought. We were talking comfortable with Andriy. There was not any nervous

atmosphere like on on-arrival. Some of my thoughts are now in the order • In first moment we could write plan for this training. That’s why we are satisfied • When I came to the hotel I didn’t have some big expectations, but it changes at the first session. I

wanted to get some knowledge about Youth in Action Programme in OAT and it happened • I didn’t want to come as I had bad experience after the Crimea, but the training was very useful

and interesting for me as I found answers on my questions. The atmosphere was fine and I’m full of optimism

2. How much has this training been a learning process for you? Examples?

• It was good. I know how to work when the time is short • I know what I can write in my Youthpass and what I can do after my EVS • We can learn how to plan our training and do what we want to do • Most useful was thinking and planning our activities for the next 6 month • Separated for competition which will be needed for us and find possibility to learn and the last

step – realized it. • I learned that all volunteers are different. All of us have different expectations. We don’t need to

work together always • I have got a lot of new thoughts and ideas which I would like to implement in my project. This was

a kind of my evaluation. Useful part for me was the part about the project, how to communicate with people, how to communicate in the organisation, assistance with our booklet. I can express my thoughts better

3. What was the most interesting point for you during this training session?

• Talking about Ukraine • What after EVS • Youthpass • What after EVS • What do I want to do in the next 6 month • What we can do after our EVS and what is the problem at this moment in our work. • Talking about Youth in Action Programme. With this kind of knowledge we can thinking and

planning the next activity • For me the most important session was about feedback. I got new information which will help me

in my EVS. Important part was also a session about Youth in Action Programme. I know which Actions I can use to work with Ukrainian NGOs

• Conversations when we could openly speak about what is wrong in cooperation with our organisation. It was good that the trainer works separately from our organisation and is outside of us.

4. What did you missed during the training?

• Volunteers from other organizations and other countries • Excursion • Trips :) • No sightseeing, no trips

18 • Volunteers from different organisations • I missed a little people from other countries I met during on-arrival training • It was a great idea that volunteers prepared training schedule by themselves. That is why I don’t

feel that I was missing something • It was a pity that the other volunteers from other organisations were not with us. We meet often

and it would be nice to talk about our life during the last half a year. Excursion was missing as this would be a chance to get to know Ukrainian culture

• Life (mobile operator) has no connection here. I prefer places with phone connection • The place was far away from any civilization • We were supposed to go to Carpathians. Why we came here? • Atmosphere was good and I’m really glad • Food was not prepared for vegetarians, I mean all the time I needed to remind about it to the

kitchen, but kitchen knew about it earlier • Accommodation was good • Nice was a fact we could meet other volunteers and talk about possibility for cooperation • That was a very good and important time for me. I feel myself much confident after midterm and I

have plenty ideas for my EVS work. • This training filled me with energy and new ideas. Such a positive energy.
