Introduction

!his e"ercise has #een done as part of the Ad$anced Course in Soil %echanics& 'ith the aimof o#tain different security factors 'ith different conditions of a gi$en slope& 'hich consists of

the e"ca$ation of a channel ne"t to a road( All the calculations are made mainly 'ith the use of )*+CALC and completing them 'ithhand calculations(!he guidelines of this e"ercise 'ere the *urocode , using the -innish .ational Anne"(

Short description of the soil profile and design of the structure

!he soil composition #eneath the road is sho'ed in the picture #elo'& first #ase material for 1(/ mtr and soft clay #elo'& its strength properties 'ere determined in three differentpositions trough a $ane test and la#oratory testing( 0ith this information& the soil 'as di$idedinto layers to simplify the calculation(

!he slope of the channel is 1 2&/ and a 'ater depth 132&4 m( !he road em#an5uementhas a thic6ness of 4&/m and 14m long& the traffic load o$er is 146.7m2& in addition 'e ha$ean e"tra load of 146.7m2 due to the e"ca$ation machinery(

Parameters used in calculations

In the ta#le #elo' are presented the properties of the soil( Undrained shear strengthparameters are o#tained from the $ane test& 'hich are affected #y a reduction factor µdepending on its ' L( It is recommended to use the shear strength $alues of the first clay layer for the #ase material as these may #e higher( Inde" properties are o#tained from thela#oratory test(
