Special tools required:

Necessary preliminary work:

Remove cylinder head cover

Remove all spark plugs

Remove vibration damper

Remove front crankshaft seal

Check timing

Remove oil sump



Push back the with the (1).

chain tensioner tensioningrail

Secure chain tensioner using special tool .11 4 120

Engine removed:

Block at flywheel with special tool.

Caution!To release central bolt (1), remove special tool

Vehicles with manual gearbox:

Attach special tool to manual gearbox withexisting gearbox bolts (1).

Block crankshaft in direction of arrow with specialtool.

Vehicles with automatic transmission:

Block crankshaft with special tool .2 222 742

Feed in special tool, slide screw forward and tighten.

Caution!Breakaway torque of central bolt: > 600 Nm.

A 3/4 inch tool (2) is needed to release thecentral bolt.

Release central bolt (1).

Tightening torque:

Remove .intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters

Order number: 83 30 2 212 831

Remove .chain tensioner

Screw in vibration absorber screws (1).

Pull out hub (2) on crankshaft forward in direction ofarrow.

Open screw plug (1).

Tightening torque:

Release bearing journal (1) from timing chain moduleon cylinder head.

Release bolts (1) from timing chain module oncylinder head.

Remove chain module with timing chain and upwards.camshaft sprocket



Remove timing chain module (1) upward.

Caution!Note direction of installation of sprocket (2).

Collar (see arrow) on camshaft sprocket (2)points to .engine

Incorrect assembly will result in .

enginedamage

Caution!The sprocket must be renewed.

It is necessary to replace the chain drive with alaser structure.



Pull timing chain upwards until camshaftsprocket engages chain guide (1).

Install timing chain and camshaft sprocket in thisposition.

Installation note:Permanently hold timing chain under tension.Timing chain may jam on chain guide (1).

Caution!After loosening the central screw, onlysprockets (1) with a laser structure arepermitted.

For the laser structure on the sprocket (1), see arrow.

.Sprockets with grip discs are no longer permissible

Installation note:Observe mounting flats on camshaftsprocket (1).

Before installation: Press back chain tensioner withtensioning rail and secure with special tool .11 4 120



Caution!Grip disc (1) is only installed on vehicles withmanual gearbox.

Installation note:Grip disc (1) must be (manual gearboxonly)

removed

If the grip disc (1) is mounted, the central boltcan come loose (engine damage).

Loosen sealing cap using a screwdriver.

Installation note:Turn engine at central bolt until special tool

can be positioned in .

2 212 825 counterbalanceshaft

Secure special tool to housingwith screw (1).

2 212 825 oil pump



Fit hub and central bolt (1).

Remove special tool .11 4 120



Insert central bolt (1) with hub for crankshaft.

Tighten down central bolt (1).

Tightening torque:

Crank engine twice.

Check .timing

Replace front .crankshaft seal

Assemble engine.
