MASTER GARDENER TRAINING- Cornell Cooperative Ex-tension in Warren County is now accepting applications for thenew 2014 Master Gardener Training Program. Space is limited, socontact the office soon for more information and an application.Through the Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program, ourMaster Gardeners obtain a sense of accomplishment and commu-nity spirit. They also enjoy the camaraderie and intellectual stimu-lation from their fellow Master Gardeners. After enrolling in thecourse, the participants are provided with a binder of informationthat supplements the weekly presentations from Cornell Univer-sity faculty, Cooperative Extension staff, and local experts on awide range of horticultural topics. The topics include basic botany,entomology, soils, home lawn care, vegetable and fruit gardening,composting, organic gardening and other practical and interestingsubject matter. Local regional training is held in Ballston Spa onMondays from late January to mid-April. Upon completion of

the 11-week lecture series, volunteers also receive a Cornell SoilpH Test Kit that will be useful for practical application of thetraining. There are many opportunities for Master Gardener vol-unteers to work with community groups, schools, and the gar-dening public in order to educate and provide useful organic gar-dening information. Master Gardener meetings are relaxed andallow the sharing of ideas, continued training, and interesting toursand outings to local gardens, woodlands, preservation sites, andother areas. WHAT IS CANCER?The body is made up of trillions of living cells. Normal bodycells grow, divide into new cells, and die in an orderly way.During the early years of a person's life, normal cells dividefaster to allow the person to grow. After the person becomes anadult, most cells divide only to replace worn-out, damaged, ordying cells.

Cancer begins when cells in a part of the body start to grow outof control. There are many kinds of cancer, but they all startbecause of this out-of-control growth of abnormal cells.

Cancer cell growth is different from normal cell growth. Insteadof dying, cancer cells keep on growing and form new cancercells. These cancer cells can grow into (invade) other tissues,

something that normal cells cannot do. Being able to grow outof control and invade other tissues are what makes a cell a can-cer cell.

In most cases the cancer cells form a tumor. But some cancers,like leukemia, rarely form tumors. Instead, these cancer cellsare in the blood and bone marrow.

When cancer cells get into the bloodstream or lymph vessels,they can travel to other parts of the body. There they begin togrow and form new tumors that replace normal tissue. This pro-cess is called metastasis.

No matter where a cancer may spread, it is always named forthe place where it started. For instance, breast cancer that hasspread to the liver is still called breast cancer, not liver cancer.Likewise, prostate cancer that has spread to the bone is calledmetastatic prostate cancer, not bone cancer.

Different types of cancer can behave very differently. For ex-ample, lung cancer and breast cancer are very different diseases.They grow at different rates and respond to different treatments.That is why people with cancer need treatment that is aimed attheir own kind of cancer.

Not all tumors are cancerous. Tumors that aren’t cancer are calledbenign. Benign tumors can cause problems - they can grow verylarge and press on healthy organs and tissues. But they cannotgrow into other tissues. Because of this, they also can’t spreadto other parts of the body (metastasize). These tumors are al-most never life threatening.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR

BREAST CANCER?While we do not yet know exactly what causes breast cancer, wedo know that certain risk factors are linked to the disease. A riskfactor is something that affects your chance of getting a diseasesuch as cancer. Different cancers have different risk factors. Somerisk factors, such as smoking, drinking, and diet are linked tothings a person does. Others, like a person's age, race, or familyhistory, can’t be changed.But risk factors don’t tell us everything. Having a risk factor, oreven several, doesn’t mean that a woman will get breast cancer.Some women who have one or more risk factors never get thedisease. And most women who do get breast cancer don't haveany risk factors (other than being a woman and growing older).

Some risk factors are greater than others, and your risk for breastcancer can change over time from aging or lifestyle.Although many risk factors may increase your chance of havingbreast cancer, it is not yet known just how some of these riskfactors cause cells to become cancer. Hormones seem to play arole in many cases of breast cancer, but just how this happens isnot fully understood.RISK FACTORS YOU CANNOT CHANGE:Gender: Breast cancer is about 100 times more common in womenthan in men. Age: The chance of getting breast cancer goes up asa woman gets older. Genetic risk factors: Inherited changes (mu-tations) in certain genes like BRCA1 and BRCA2 can increasethe risk. Family history: Breast cancer risk is higher amongwomen whose close blood relatives have this disease. Still, mostwomen who get breast cancer do not have a family history of thisdisease, so not having a relative with breast cancer doesn’t meanyou won’t get it. Personal history of breast cancer: A womanwith cancer in one breast has a greater chance of getting a newcancer in the other breast or in another part of the same breast.This is different from a return of the first cancer (called a recur-rence). Race: Overall, white women are slightly more likely to

get breast cancer than African-American women. African-Ameri-can women, though, are more likely to die of breast cancer. Asian,Hispanic, and Native-American women have a lower risk of get-ting and dying from breast cancer. Dense breast tissue: Densebreast tissue means there is more gland tissue and less fatty tis-sue. Women with denser breast tissue have a higher risk of breastcancer. Dense breast tissue can also make it harder for doctors tospot problems on mammograms. Certain benign (not cancer)breast problems: Women who have certain benign breast changesmay have an increased risk of breast cancer. Some of these aremore closely linked to breast cancer risk than others.Lobular carcinoma in situ: In this condition, cells that look likecancer cells are in the milk-making glands (lobules), but do notgrow through the wall of the lobules and cannot spread to otherparts of the body. It is not a true cancer or pre-cancer, but havingLCIS increases a woman's risk of getting cancer in either breastlater.BREAST CANCER RISK AND LIFESTYLE CHOICES:Not having children or having them later in life: Women whohave not had children, or who had their first child after age 30,have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer. Being pregnant manytimes or pregnant when younger reduces breast cancer risk.Certain kinds of birth control: Studies have found that womenwho are using birth control pills or an injectable form of birthcontrol called depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA or Depo-Provera®) have a slightly greater r isk of breast cancer than womenwho have never used them. This risk seems to go back to normalover time once the pills are stopped. Using hormone therapyafter menopause: Taking estrogen and progesterone after meno-pause (sometimes called combined hormone therapy) increasesthe risk of getting breast cancer. The breast cancer risk seems togo back to normal over time once the hormones are stopped. Theuse of estrogen alone after menopause does not seem to increasethe risk of developing breast cancer, but it can increase the risk of other cancers.

THE IMPORTANCEOF FINDING BREAST

CANCER EARLY

The goal of screening ex-ams for early breast cancerdetection is to find cancersbefore they start to causesymptoms. Screening refersto tests and exams used tofind a disease, such as can-cer, in people who do nothave any symptoms. Earlydetection means using anapproach that lets breastcancer get diagnosed earlierthan otherwise might haveoccurred.Breast cancers that arefound because they arecausing symptoms tend tobe larger and are morelikely to have alreadyspread beyond the breast. Incontrast, breast cancersfound during screening ex-ams are more likely to besmaller and still confined tothe breast. The size of abreast cancer and how farit has spread are some of themost important factors inpredicting the prognosis(outlook) of a woman withthis disease.Most doctors feel that earlydetection tests for breastcancer save thousands of lives each year, and thatmany more lives could besaved if even more womenand their health care pro-viders took advantage of these tests. Following theAmerican Cancer Society's

guidelines for the early de-tection of breast cancer im-proves the chances thatbreast cancer can be diag-nosed at an early stage andtreated successfully.

Two Graveyard Walks will be conducted at

Warrensburg Cemetery. Keeping with our 1813 theme, the first graveyard walk will be held OnFriday, October 18th followed by a Gourmet Dessert Buffet at the Cornerstone Victorian B&B,

Theexhibit will run from December 7 through January 15. Local residents are invited to submit theirdollhouses or "room boxes" for consideration at this juried show. Due to dollhouse sizes and spaceconsiderations at the museum, the number accepted must be limited. Children and youth groups arewelcome to submit a dollhouse or room box but their submission form must include a parent orguardian or adult group leader's signature. While entries f rom neighboring towns are welcome, thosewith connections to Warrensburg are especially encouraged. Submission forms must be received byNovember 1.
