Where the Southwest meets the
Northwest, you’ll fi nd a destination
with a passion for living — Reno
Tahoe USA.
With its ideal location at the upper
reaches of the Southwest and the
mountainous start of the Northwest,
Reno Tahoe offers the best of both
regions — a beautiful high desert
setting and backdrop of towering
peaks that has more outdoor special
events, active sports, world-class spas,
breathtaking vistas and sunny days
than any other resort area in North
America. Even better, you’ll fi nd it all
at extremely affordable prices.
But don’t just take our word for it.
Our area has been showing up on doz-
ens of “Top 10” lists from top maga-
zines and travel resources, thanks to
our great weather, upscale resorts,
outdoor activities, Lake Tahoe’s beauty
and incredible value. We’ve high-
lighted some of our favorites within
this planner, so dive in and immerse
yourself in the excitement and rip-
roaring fun of Reno Tahoe USA.

All seasons, 1,000 reasons
WINTER. SPRING. SUMMER. FALL. We love each of them with
an equal measure of passion. And with the area’s 300 days of
sunshine a year, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to make
the most of each season. For you winter worshippers, we
boast the largest concentration of ski resorts in all of North
America, plus an après-ski tradition as legendary as the slopes
themselves. Whatever your tool for carving up the mountain
— ski, board, snowshoe, snowmobile, sleigh or tube — Reno
Tahoe USA has the perfect terrain for you.
When the white stuff melts away, dust off your hiking boots,
pack a summit picnic and climb to the top of 10,776-foot Mount
Rose. Another way to conquer the great outdoors? Rent a
mountain bike or bring your own and take on the Flume Trail,
arguably the most stunning bike ride on the planet. If you love
to fi sh, grab your reel and claim your own piece of paradise on
the stunningly beautiful Truckee River (it’s especially gorgeous
during autumn when the trees are exploding with color). Or
grab your golf clubs and take advantage of the thin mountain
air for what may be the
longest drives of your life. With
championship courses to suit
every budget and a wide range
of terrain — from high desert
beauty to storybook forests
— you’re just a chip shot away
from an unforgettable day on
the links. (PR

ENTERTAINMENT & NIGHTLIFE
Reasons to stay up past your bedtime
HERE IN RENO WE HAVE A TENDENCY TO STAY UP ALL NIGHT, AND WHY NOT? With 24-hour gaming action, concerts,
comedians, bars, clubs, stage shows, ultralounges and more,
who can blame us? Needless to say, it’s a good idea to grab
a power nap before you hit the town because it may be the
only sleep you get!
For concert-lovers, there’s always a great show getting ready
to crank the volume up to 11, including free shows through-
out the summer at Rollin’ on the River in downtown Reno. The
Grand Theater at Grand Sierra Resort has just completed a
$10 million renovation, turning it into one of the top performing
arts venues in the country!
Take part in a monthly wine walk or pub crawl that lets
you sample several downtown and midtown bars in a single
outing. We even have themed crawls so you can dress up as
your favorite zombie, vampire
or Santa.
For local fl avor, check out
the booming Midtown and
Riverwalk Districts, with dis-
tinctive favorites like The
Depot Craft Brewery Distillery,
Louis’ Basque Corner, Silver
Peak Brewery, Wild River Grille,
Chapel Tavern and Death &
Taxes, to name just a few. ©H

ARTS & CULTURE
Reasons to be inspired
FROM THE SURREAL TO THE SUBLIME, you’ll fi nd art in all
forms here. The Riverwalk District in downtown Reno is home
to a thriving collection of artists’ lofts, shops, galleries, the-
aters and social gatherings. There’s always an amazing new
exhibit showcased at the acclaimed Nevada Museum of Art,
ranging from American Impressionism to works by Nevada
artists and more. Best of all, it’s a quick stroll from downtown.
Or check out the National Automobile Museum — also just a
short walk away — home to one of the most prestigious car
collections in the entire world.
Experience the talents of the Reno Philharmonic, Nevada
Opera and Reno Chamber Orchestra. Gather the family and
head to the Nevada Discovery Museum. Or hit the beach for
the unforgettable Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival.
And don’t forget the cool-
est party on the planet, Burning
Man. Once a year, nearly 70,000
participants gather to be part
of an experimental commu-
nity — Black Rock City — in
Nevada’s Black Rock Desert
just north of Reno for this event
fi lled with art cars, fi re dancers,
themed camps and original art
on an epic scale.©N

Into the BlueMark Twain called Lake Tahoe “the fair-
est picture the whole world affords,” and
many think of it as America’s most beau-
tiful drive. You can begin your journey
anywhere along the loop, but you might
want to start by heading up the sweep-
ing switchbacks of the Mt. Rose Highway
(SR 431), where just past the summit on
the way to Incline Village is one of the
best overlooks in the region. From there
you can head west to Tahoe City’s Fanny
Bridge, the Gatekeeper’s Museum and
the best lazy-day river rafting around. Or
continue south to The Shops at Heavenly
Village, a paddleboat cruise on the lake
and hiking at world-famous Emerald Bay.

The Wild, Wild WestVirginia City wasn’t always the small,
ruggedly charming place it is today.
In its heyday, it was the largest city

Sample its charms by cruising the

check out the new Whitney Peak Hotel.
Or if you’re looking to venture beyond
downtown, consider the following:
Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks for
beautiful Sierra views and easy access
to Victorian Square; the Atlantis Casino
Resort Spa, which offers newly renovated
rooms and world-class dining; Grand
Sierra Resort, with its myriad upscale
renovations and never-ending options
for entertainment, shopping, dining and
family fun; the Peppermill Resort Spa
Casino, with luxury tower rooms and
gorgeous pools; the Hyatt Regency Lake
Tahoe Resort, which offers the Stillwater
Spa; and the Cal Neva Resort, which
is in the midst of a multi-million dollar
renovation and set to reopen in 2016.
If small-scale is your style, we have
unique riverfront hotels and limited
service inns. Don’t forget Incline Village
for its quaint inns and mountain retreats.
Whatever you choose, feel free to stake
your claim, raise your fl ag and make
yourself at home.

38 RENO TAHOE USA GETAWAY PLANNER
Reasonsto startpackingCheck out a list of airlines serving the
Reno-Tahoe International Airport by
going to VisitRenoTahoe.com and
clicking on “Getting Here.”
If you’re hitting the road to get
here, Reno and Sparks are located at
the junction of Interstate 80 and U.S.
395/I-580. I-80 provides all-weather
access across Donner Summit from
central and Northern California. From
Southern California, it’s a straight
shot up U.S. 395 along the dramatic
eastern front of the Sierra Nevada.
From the northwest, take I-5 south
to I-80 or, in the spring and sum-
mer, opt for the scenic shortcut that
leaves I-5 at Mount Shasta and fol-
lows California 89 and 44 southeast
through Susanville.
A third option is Amtrak’s California
Zephyr, which arrives daily from the
Bay Area and Sacramento to the
west and Salt Lake and Denver to
the east. Trains from the Northwest,
coastal Southern California and the
Central Valley connect to the Zephyr
in Sacramento.
