Ours is a big, busy school and our students are afforded these opportunities thanks to the wonderful teachers who put up their hands to take sporting teams, organise excursions and visits from various groups, lead choirs and musical programs, teach debating teams and public speaking, enter our students into competitions, organise swimming school and so much more. One of those wonderful teachers who has played such a large role in providing so many wonderful opportunities for our students over such a long time is Mr Greg Thompson. Greg is retiring from full-time teaching in 2018 and he will be missed. Greg is an outstanding teacher who holds the history and traditions of Bowral Public School in his hands. We hold him in our hearts. Luckily we will benefit from Greg’s teaching as he teaches a couple of days a week in 2018. Miss Christie will also be taking some well-deserved Long Service Leave in 2018. I thank her for her leadership as Deputy Principal and the dual role she has played this year as co-principal two days a week. The support and dedication Miss Christie shows on a daily basis to all of our students is second to none. Miss Christie has a passion for student welfare and parents regularly comment to me about her caring nature. Miss Christie spends a large part of many days ensuring the safety and happiness of our students is at the forefront of all that she does. Parents, in my speeches at the Presentation Assemblies over the last week I have been talking about resilience. We know that we have more students than ever before who are suffering from anxiety. It is incredibly important that we address this issue now and start to promote and encourage resilience amongst our young people. How do we do that? As parents and educators, we need to let our children take responsibility for their actions, we need to work together to reduce anxiety amongst our students and replace it with strong, independent, fearless girls and boys, who are not afraid to make mistakes. It is through making mistakes that we learn. Parents who constantly hover over their children and refuse to allow them to fail are doing their children no favours. Nelson Mandela was my hero. He said: “Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.” He was a man who suffered so much adversity in his life, but he refused to blame others…instead he kept striving for friendship and harmony, for a world where people were kind and fair. He epitomised resilience and in 2018 we will begin a focus on developing strong and resilient children. I seek your help in doing so. Finally, I would like to wish all of our families a Happy and Safe holiday period and a wonderful Christmas. I look forward to welcoming our families, old and new back to the school year in 2018. From the Principal:

As I write this final newsletter for 2017, I reflect on another wonderful year of learning opportunities for the students at Bowral Public School.

Miss Christie will also be taking some well-deserved Long Service Leave in 2018. I thank her for her leadership as Deputy Principal and the dual role she has played this year as co-principal two days a week. The support and dedication Miss Christie shows on a daily basis to all of our students is second to none. Cyber Safety Solutions Presentation The P&C have made a contribution to the cost of this very valuable presentation on the 11 December so that the cost will be reduced for parents to attend. Tickets will cost $20 and we will be hearing some really important advice from Susan McLean, Australia’s leading cyber safety expert about keeping our children safe online. We are very lucky to have Susan visiting our school. Tea and Tissues Morning Tea 2018 Early next term on Friday 2 February the P&C will be hosting our annual ‘Tea &Tissues’ morning tea for new kindergarten parents on their child’s first day. We have a lovely tradition of getting

this year’s kindergarten parents to help host this, and we will be asking for donations of baked goods/sandwiches and some parents to come along and welcome our new families to the school. It usually runs for around an hour. So if your child will be in Year 1 next year, and you would like to help out, then please email me at [email protected] Uniform Shop Extended Hours The Uniform shop will be open as usual this term on Wednesday / Friday from 9-10am, and for your convenience they

will be extending their opening hours during the first week of Term 1 next year.

Normal opening hours resume in Week 2, on Wednesday / Friday 9-10am. The Orientation Pack is excellent value at $180 and is only available in the Uniform Shop. Don’t forget that all other items are available online here; https://bpsuniformshop.ecwid.com/ (you can order online during the holidays but orders won’t be filled until first week back at school) A huge thank you to our uniform shop volunteers for providing this valuable service to our school! Paver Fundraiser This gives our school community the opportunity to buy a personalised paver to commemorate their time at our school, whilst raising funds for the P&C. We already have a section of pavers that were laid in 2014 outside of our school museum that look wonderful. The kids love looking for their name amongst all of them. Orders will be closing soon so be sure to get in before you miss out! Download a form here: https://bpsuniformshop.ecwid.com/Sesquicentenary-Items-c24699085 Thank you Finally, on behalf of our executive committee I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to those of you that have helped out or contributed in some way to P&C meetings, events, and fundraisers this year. Your time and efforts are very much appreciated, and in this role I have been very lucky to see firsthand the wonderful community here at work. It has been a privilege to be a part of the P&C team. A very big thanks also to the wonderful staff here at BPS for supporting and welcoming our ideas, events, and input. We are very lucky to have such a good relationship between the school and the community, and the children really benefit from this. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year break, and I look forward to next year. Averil Cutroni P&C President
