 GSR  Evalua5on

•  Iden5fies  opportuni5es  to  improve  GSR  parameters  of  exis5ng  remedies  –  Energy  efficiency  – Decrease  air  emissions  (including  CO2)  – Minimize  material  use  and  wastes  generated  – Minimize  water  use  and  maximize  water  reuse  – Minimize  soil  and  habitat  disturbance  –  Improve  long-‐term  stewardship

•  Ensure  protec5on  of  human  health  and  the  environment

Page 14: REMEDIAL(PROCESS(OPTIMIZATION:(( …

 Tucson  System    Metrics  •  1997  –  2011  – Captured  ~  800M  gallons  and  removed  ~  38  lb  TCE  (3  gallons)

– 2008-‐2011:  Influent  <  5  µg/L  (MCL)  32  of  36  sampling  events.

– 2008-‐2011  Average  monthly  energy  consump5on  22K  (kilowaU-‐hours)  kWh  or  265K  kWh  per  year  •  Approximately  250  metric  tons  CO2  equivalents  emiUed  based  on  energy  use  per  year  •  14  metric  tons  CO2  based  on  transporta5on  per  year

Page 15: REMEDIAL(PROCESS(OPTIMIZATION:(( …

 Tucson  Key  Findings

•  Significant  energy  usage  to  treat  minimal  mass  •  Large  CO2    mass  emiUed/mass  contaminant  removed

•  Significant  material  use  &  waste  from  long-‐term  monitoring  (LTM)  rou5nes  – Nearly  9  miles  of  polyethylene  tubing

•  Significant  groundwater  mounding  caused  by  reinjec5on

•  More  cost  effec5ve  opportunity  to    use  solar  power  if  energy  demand    reduced

Page 16: REMEDIAL(PROCESS(OPTIMIZATION:(( …

 Tucson  Substan5ve    Recommenda5ons  •  Energy    – Switch  to  a  passive  remedia5on  approach

•  Material  use  &  waste  minimiza5on  –  Ini5ate  passive  diffusion  bag  (PDB)  valida5on  study
