FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

On August 6, we will celebrate The Feast of the Transfiguration. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Transfiguration is: “The mysterious event in which Jesus, speaking with Moses and Elijah on the mountain, was transformed in appearance – in the sight of Peter, James, and John – as a moment of disclosure of His divine glory.” The Gospel narratives tell us that the Lord Jesus’ “face shone like the sun,” (Matthew 17:2); and that Our Lord’s clothing changed: “glistening, intensely white, as no fuller on earth could bleach them” (Mark 9:3).

In the experience of the Transfiguration, the three disciples encounter not only the Lord Jesus, but also the other two Divine Persons of the Blessed Trinity: God the Father and God the Holy Spirit also made Themselves known to the three disciples. As St. Thomas Aquinas put it: “The whole Trinity appeared: The Father in the Voice; the Son in the Man; and the Holy Spirit in the shining Cloud.”

Through The Transfiguration, God allowed Peter, James, and John the privileged spiritual experience that was meant to strengthen their faith for the trials they would later endure. But it was only a temporary event; not meant to be permanent. In the same way, at certain times in this life, God may show us special experiences of His grace that strengthen our faith. We should welcome these experiences for the graces they are and understand they may have been meant only as momentary glimpses of the joy of heaven to sustain us as we face the challenges of this life, to strengthen us on the path that will, ultimately, lead us into the endless joy of heaven.

The Transfiguration

of the Lord

Please join us as we celebrate a Solemn High Mass (Extraordinary Form-Latin) on Wednesday, August 8 at 7:00 p.m., for the Feast Day of St. John Vianney.

The schola will consist of seminarians and seminarians will be serving the Mass. Please come and ask St. John Vianney to

intercede on behalf of the priests and seminarians of the Archdiocese that they may have hearts like Christ’s.

Come Home...Are you or do you know someone who is being led to the Catholic Faith? RCIA will be gathering and joining for fellowship and a deeper journey with the Catholic faith starting in September.

RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and is the process for becoming Catholic and accepting Christ and His teachings in the fullest through the Catholic Church. RCIA is a journey for adults who have a relationship with Jesus Christ and are being called to explore the Catholic faith in a deeper, meaningful way through Baptism, Confirmation and the Holy Eucharistic.

As a congregation, we ask for prayers for those adults surrounding us who are seeking the Lord and the Catholic faith. Your witness may be the witness they need to become a Disciple of Christ and a brother/sister in the Catholic faith. Let our daily works be the true evangelization of the works of our Lord.

If you are interested in participating in RCIA, please reach out to Missy Bennett, Coordinator of Religious Education, at [email protected], or call 498-0433, ext. 1.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

ST. DOMINICSt. Dominic, a member of the aristocratic Guzman family, was born on August 8, 1170 in Calerugga, Spain. He received a Church education and was made a canon at the cathedral in Osma. While accompanying his bishop on a diplomatic mission to Denmark, St. Dominic first encountered adherents of the heresies that had risen in Southern France, namely the Albigensians, the Cathars, and the Waldensians. He made it his life’s work to preach the Gospel to overcome heresy and bring these people back into the fold of the Church. Pope Honorius III in 1218 approved the creation of Dominic’s Order of Preachers, thereby instituting an order we most often call the Dominicans. St. Dominic exhorted his friars to follow the Rule of St. Augustine, keep lives of community and personal poverty, remain committed to their ministry as preachers, and to be diligent in their studies. In addition to his order for men, St. Dominic organized a women’s community to pray for the success of the preaching ministry. By the time of his death in 1221, the Dominicans had spread throughout Europe with great success in their mission. St. Dominic died surrounded by his brothers in Bologna, promising them that he would be of greater use to them in Heaven than he ever was on earth. His feast day is August 8.
