None of above but < 216l => Pure, NOT purifying.

    None of above & >/made to 216l => Pure + Purifying.

    WATER

    1. Purifying Water

    (Natural water of any taste/color/odor)

    Pure in itself, purifies else.

    2. Pure Water

    Pure in itself, purifies nothing.

    3. Impure Water

    Neither pure nor purifies.

    3a. Less than Qullatyn(216l) with najasa.Even if taste/color/odor unchanged.

    3b. >= Qullatayn with najasa.

    WATER

    Cannot purify with:

    1.

Water + Enough Avoidable pure stuff (flour/saffron)

    that renders it Non-Water.

    2.

< 216l water already used for fard acts of fard

    wudu/ghusl even if childs.

    3.

< 216l water already used to remove filth, even if

    unchanged.

  • 7/29/2019 Reliance of Traveler Book E

    23/72

    WATER

    Can purify with water:

    1. Slightly changed by avoidable pure stuff (f/s).

    2. Changed by proximity to aloe, oil etc. even if

    fragrant.

    3. Changed by unavoidable agents (algae, leaves, dust)

or affected by standing too long.

    4. Already used for non-fard rituals:

Sunnas of fard wudu like rinsing, non-fard wudu/ghusl.

    5. Already used to lift hadath/janaba but collected to

    make > 216l.

    WATER

    If < 216l water:After (1st face wash/niyyah) in fard (wudu/ghusl),

niyyah of using hands to scoop water MUST.

Else introducing hands renders it non-Purifying.

    If >= 216l:

Even if >=2 janab persons immersed in it, remainspurifying.

216l water becomes impure even if slight change in itstaste/color/odor due to najasa.

Water is again purifying if change vanishes by itself.

(Not by adding musk/ ambergris/camphor to mask scent, saffron: mask color, vinegar: mask taste, earth etc.)

  • 7/29/2019 Reliance of Traveler Book E

    25/72

    WATER

< 216l still/running water becomes impure by mere

contact with najasa (except bloodless dead creature like

fly) , even when unchanged, except when indiscernible

    with average look.

If total collectes pure/impure water >216l and no change

    remains => Purifying.

Change by something pure does not hurt if still

    classifiable as water.

Ex: Sugar/tea keep water pure but not purifying.

But slight discoloration by tea leaves,

slight sweetness from sugar, keep it purifying.

    (b) Washing the face.

    (c) Washing arms up to and including elbows.

    (d) Wiping a little of the head with wet hands.(e) Washing the feet up to and including the anklebones.

    INTEGRALS OF WUDU

    NIYYAH

    1. To lift hadath.

    2. To purify for salah OR

    3. For an act haram in hadath (ex: touching Quran).

The niyyah of fard wudu suffices in place of all above.

    These intentions not for:

    1. Anyone suffering from chronic annulment of wudu.

(ex:Inability to hold back intermittent drops of urine.)

    2. Someone intending tayammum.

They intend permission to offer fard salah etc.

(These peoples hadath is not lifted, rather the Sharia

gives them rukhsat to pray etc. w/o lifting it.)

    INTEGRALS OF WUDU

"Praise to Allah for Islam and its blessings. Praise toAllah who made water purifying and Islam a light. My Lord,I take refuge in You from the whispering of devils and take

refuge in You lest they come to me.

It is sunna to say all the above to oneself.

If intentionally/absentmindedly omits beginning withBasmala then one pronounces it during wudu by saying,

"In the name of Allah, first to last".
