Introduction
This daily practice manual is intended as part of a daily Reiki practice; Reiki, from its
inception, was based upon the Reiki Precepts grounded within those of Buddhism,
specifically the Tendai Buddhist Lineages. However, in keeping with current
understandings here in the West (and thereby removing the more esoteric aspects of
Tendai Buddhism), I include here a format mostly based upon that of the Jodo Shu /
Jodo Shinshu Schools of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism.
Included are the Precepts, to be chanted in Japanese 3 Times, mindfully and
meditatively, with much reflection. This is done daily, morning and evening.

The Bell / Gong is sounded
All now perform Hatsurei ho and all in Noble Silence.
Step I: Relax, with hands on lap/legs, palm down…focus upon the Tenden point.
Step II: Mokunen. Recite silently to yourself, the intention, “I am going to start
Hatsurei now”
Step III: Kenyoku (dry bathing)
Step IV: Connection. Slowly raise your hands above the crown of your head, palms
up, fingertips facing each other. Visualize white light streaming into your
hands and circulating throughout your body.
Step V: Joshin Kokkyu Ho. Return hands to your lap, palms up. Breathe slowly
through your nose, focusing your attention on the breath. Upon each in
breath, light is flowing into your crown and down to your Tanden..it melts

away all tension and ill ease. Pause. Exhale slowly, visualize that light
emitting from your entire body in all directions, off to infinity.
Step VI: Gassho. After the Gokai Leader sounds the bell, holding hands in Gassho
until the sounding of the bell again. Focus your attention upon where the
two middle fingers touch.
Step VII: Seishin Toitsu. In Gassho, breathe in white healing light into your hands,
flooding your hands and down to your Tanden. Pause. Breathe out and
visualize the light emitting from your hands.
Step VIII: If Meditation upon given symbol / energy is to be done, do so here.
Step IX: The appointed Reiki Master, if present, now gives a Reiki burst to each in
attendance…slowly, mindfully, all in Noble Silence.
Step X: Mokunen. Place hands slowly back on your lap/legs, palms down. Say
within yourself: “I’ve finished Hatsurei ho now).
Step XI: Slowly open your eyes, shake your hands up and down gently for a few
seconds, and focus back upon the Gokai, in Gassho.

Additional Practices These additional practices or chants are based upon the Reiki symbols…any symbol
can be utilized, but if done as a group, one particular one is chosen for that day /
week or special occasion.
Chanting Meditation Practice
1. Sit down and relax. Choose the symbol you’re going to work with. If you wish, you may say the intention before the practice: I offer this practice to the benefit of all living beings.
2. Perform the introduction practice. Do the Kenyoku Ho, then put your hands in Gassho mudra, open yourself for the flow of Reiki and focus on your Hara – speak, whisper or think of an intention that you’re about to begin the chanting of the Reiki symbol.
3. Take a mala to one of your hands.
17
4. Use the middle of your hand to draw a Reiki symbol in the air in front of you. 5. Speak the name of the symbol – its jumon or mantra – three times to activate
the symbol. From now on, until the end of this meditation session, you should try to keep the image of the symbol in front of you mind’s eye. If you wish, you can meditate in front of the symbol’s painting.
6. Chant the symbol’s jumon: 1. Breath in – slowly and gently. Breathe with your Diaphragm. 2. As you breath out, chant the jumon in syllabes, for example: Cho-Ku-
Rei. Try to vibrate the sound of the jumon. 3. Breath in – slowly and gently. Breathe with your Diaphragm. 4. As you breath out, chant the jumon in syllabes, for example: Cho-Ku-
Rei. Try to vibrate the sound of the jumon. 5. (…)
7. Repeat the step 6th until you’ve reached 108, 216 or 324 repetitions. 8. Ground yourself:
1. Focus on your Hara. 2. Focus on the center of Earth, or at least the ground below you. 3. Focus on your Hara.
You’re done.
18
If you work with a mala, then remember – you should not cross over the 109th bead – when you reach the final 108th bead, you just turn around and count the beads all the way back until you reach the 1st bead. Then you turn around again. This way, you will never cross through the 109th bead. In some modern beliefs it is said that strong energy is colleced in the 109th bead this way. But the more traditional buddhist approach makes the 109th bead purely symbol. The fact you never cross it and never count it as a normal bead symbolizes the infinity of the spiritual practice.
Also, some people suggest that when you count on mala, you count 108 beads merely as 100 repetitions – just in case your mind slips and lose the focus on the mantra.
