ART Coursework

Is made up of all class and homework produced in Years 10 & 11, it makes up 60% of the final GCSE grade. Every student is expected to aim to achieve a grade A* - C for the coursework. Within the coursework students will follow to main topic areas:-

Culture and Identity

Structures They are also required to make a gallery visit in which to complete a written report. Although there will be specific homework and a final piece there are deadlines throughout the course, the deadline for completion and handing in of all coursework is 25th February 2013. Exam The exam is made up of an eight week preparatory period in which supporting studies are made, followed by a 10 hour exam in which to complete a final piece. The supporting studies and exam make up 40% of the overall mark. The exam preparatory eight week period starts on the 25th February 2013. You must have evidence of work for all 3 components: coursework, preparatory studies and final piece. There is no revision for the art exam, however students should be looking to spend at least 2 hours a week on developing their work at home, to achieve their full potential. The art rooms are open every lunch time and after school for an hour each evening to give them a suitable space and extra help where required, throughout the year.

BUSINESS STUDIES Coursework

Is worth 25% of the final GCSE grade achieved.

Every student is expected to aim to achieve a grade A* - C for the coursework.

Students will complete 1 controlled assessment by October half term in Year 11.

There is a possibility that some students will be required to re-do the controlled assessment.

Exam

Students will sit 2 exam papers

Paper 1 is worth 25% of the marks and is multiple choice

Paper 1 is sat in May of Year 10

Some students will be asked to re-sit Paper 1 in January of Year 11 depending on target grades and performance.

The final paper, Paper 2, is 50% of the marks and is a mix of questioning styles.

Revision materials

Students will have a full set of revision notes in their collective workbook.

Practice papers will be covered from April in Year 11.

Revision material is available to access on the school VLE.

Students have been given the chance to purchase dedicated revision guides through school.

CATERING Controlled Assessment Controlled Assessment – this is worth 60% of the final GCSE grade and is carried out as two tasks – one which is worth 20% and the students completed this during the Summer Term of Year 10. The second task is worth 40% and will be carried out during the Spring Term of Year 11 and the deadline for this task is the week beginning Monday 25th March 2013. Examination

Students will sit one exam paper – duration one hour and fifteen minutes. Worth 40% of the final grade. Revision materials

Students will have their folders from Year 10 and folders from the Autumn Term of Year 11. They have detailed glossaries for revision use. There will be revision books available for the students to use.

DANCE Coursework Set Dance (Externally assessed): 20%

Students will perform one dance in the style of contemporary dance approximately lasting one minute.

Students will be assessed on physical, technical and expressive skills necessary for a high quality performance.

Performance in a duo/group (Internally assessed): 20%

Students perform in a group dance that relates to a professional work. It will last between 3 – 3½ minutes, with each student dancing for a minimum of 2 minutes. Students will be assessed on performance skills. Choreography Task A (Internally assessed): Solo composition task: 15%

Students select 3 motifs from one of the selected professional works. The motifs are developed to create a short dance of between 1 & 1½ minutes. Choreography Task B (Internally assessed): Group/Solo composition: 25% Students select a starting point and choose to choreograph a solo or group dance for up to 5 dancers. Students are assessed on their ability to create imaginative response to the stimulus. Exam Written: 20% Candidates will answer a short written paper focusing on critical analysis and understanding of two professional dance works and own knowledge of choreography and performance skills. Revision materials Students are provided with a full set of revision notes based on the two professional works. Support for students Tuesdays 3.15 pm – 4.15 pm are available to Year 10 & Year 11 students to catch up on any work missed or to further develop work completed in class time. Practical work is priority but students are also welcome to catch up on written work in Room D2 (Dance studio).

DRAMA Controlled assessment – Internal assessment, external moderation

This is worth a combined total of 60% of the GCSE grade.

Paper 1, Unit 1 is based on exploring themes around the Holocaust.

Paper 1, Unit 2 is based on the playscript ‘Noughts and Crosses’.

Paper 1 is compiled of a 6 hour practical exploration and a written portfolio.

Classroom time during the Autumn Term is dedicated to the completion of the written portfolio. The deadline for this is the 21st December 2012.

After the 21st December, there will be one half term dedicated to the written portfolio on an after school basis. This will be held every Monday 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm in Room D3.

The final submission date for all written work is the 15th February 2013. Exam

Paper 2 is an external assessment worth 40% of their overall GCSE grade.

It is a performance piece, assessed by a visiting examiner from Edexcel in May/April 2013 (date to be confirmed in February).

The exam is either a scripted or devised piece based on a stimulus set by the Exam Board.

Students may choose to work in a performance or a production role (set design, lighting, costume or props). Students in a production role will also need to complete a sketchbook and 5 minute presentation to camera.

This exam is 100% practical – there is no written assessment for performance students.

Support for students Monday nights 3.00 pm – 4.30 pm for controlled assessment catch up – controlled conditions – Room D3. After February half term – exam rehearsals Monday 3.00 pm – 4.30 pm – Room D1.

GEOGRAPHY Controlled Assessment

Is worth 25% of the final GCSE grade achieved.

Every student is expected to aim to achieve a grade A* - C for the coursework.

They will produce one written piece of work based on an educational visit.

The coursework will comprise of six sections: Introduction, Methodology, Data Presentation, Data interpretation and Evaluation.

The controlled assessment is for 20 hours of which 6 hours are under high control (examination conditions).

Exam

Students will sit two exam papers each worth 37.5% of the GCSE.

Paper 1 is the Physical paper and consists of three questions on The Coastal Zone, Water on the Land (Rivers) and the Restless Earth (volcanoes and earthquakes).

Paper 2 is the Human paper and also consists of three questions. These questions are about The Development Gap, Population Change and Tourism.

Spelling, punctuation and grammar accounts for 5% of the written examination papers.

SUPER V GEOGRAPHY (half a GCSE grade) Controlled Assessment

It is worth 50% half a GCSE grade.

All students are expected to aim for a ‘C’ Grade + above for this piece of coursework.

They will produce one written piece of work based on an educational visit.

The coursework will comprise of six sections: Introduction, Methodology, Data Presentation, Data interpretation and Evaluation.

The controlled assessment is for 20 hours of which 6 hours are under high control (examination conditions).

Exam

Students will sit one exam paper worth 50% of the GCSE.

GRAPHIC PRODUCTS Coursework Year 10

Exam year

In May/June students will sit an exam worth 40% of their GCSE.

Over the course of the year, students will study the theoretical aspects of Graphic Products, as well as complete three ‘practical’ skills based projects.

Practical projects will be a perfume bottle, a film poster and some ‘corporate identity’.

Students will also cover a variety of drawing techniques. Year 11

Controlled assessment year

At Easter students will submit their coursework which accounts for 60% of their GCSE.

The coursework consists of a design portfolio and a practical piece made from Styrofoam and card.

Students will design, make, package and promote a mobile phone based around a recycling theme.

Revision materials The exam is based around a theme, the title for which is released by the exam board in March. Students will be provided with a full set of revision notes on this theme, they also have their sketch/note books. The comparison text to the workbook is the ‘Lonsdale’ revision guide ‘Essentials of Graphic Products’ ISBN978-1906415495. Cost: £4.99. Students should be spending a minimum of one hour after school keeping up with the practical side of their controlled assessment.

HISTORY Controlled Assessment

Is worth 25% of the final GCSE grade achieved. The controlled assessment will be written in the Spring/Summer Term of Year 11.

They will produce one essay on Government and Protest in the USA 1945-1970 (20 marks).

They will do two source questions (worth 10 marks and 20 marks respectively).

Exam

Students will sit three exams – one in January Year 11 and two in the Summer of Year 11.

Students will sit International Relations 1943-1991 in January 2013. This is a knowledge based exam and is worth 25% of the final GCSE grade achieved.

Students will sit two exams in June 2013 (Year 11). The transformation of British Society 1931-1951 (source based exam) and Germany 1918-1939 (knowledge based). Each are worth 25% of the final GCSE grade achieved.

Spelling, punctuation and grammar accounts for 5% of the written examination papers.

Revision materials Edexcel GCSE Modern World History Revision Guide – Steve Waugh and Ben Walsh £7.99. Students will also be provided with a full set of revision notes. Students will also have the opportunity to attend revision classes after school.

ICT GCSE Coursework

Is worth 60% of the final GCSE grade achieved.

Every student is expected to aim to achieve a grade A* - C for the coursework.

Students will complete 4 pieces of coursework

First and second pieces of coursework are completed in Year 10

Third and fourth pieces of coursework are completed in Year 11 Exam

Students will sit 1 exam paper at the end of Year 11

Students will take either the Foundation or the Higher Paper depending on the grade achieved for their coursework

MATHEMATICS Coursework There is no coursework. It is purely 100% examination at the end of Year 11.

Students are entered for either the Foundation Level (grades G to C) or the Higher Level (grades D to A*). – Edexcel IMAO papers. Exam

The first paper is a non-calculator paper and is worth 50%. The second paper allows calculators and is worth 50%. Is worth 60% of the final GCSE grade.

Every student is expected to aim to achieve a grade A*-C for the controlled assessment.

4 pieces to be completed in total, 2 written pieces and 2 spoken pieces.

1 written piece and 1 spoken piece to be completed in Year 10 and 1 written piece and 1 spoken piece to be completed in Year 11.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Practical

Is worth 50% of the final GCSE grade achieved.

Every student is expected to aim to achieve a grade A*-C for the practical component.

Each student will submit their best 4 practical marks, which can include a role other than a performer.

Students may include practicals carried out off site (must be on syllabus).

Improvements to practical marks can be carried out during extra curricular clubs.

Analysis of Performance (10%) completed by all students. Exam

Students will sit 1 exam paper which lasts 1½ hours. The exam is on a selection of topics covered in theory lessons. There are 3 sections to the exam paper (i) multiple choice, (ii) short answer questions, (iii) scenario based question based on pre-released material. Students will sit 1 exam paper – May 2013.

This paper is worth 50% of the final GCSE grade awarded - (added to the 50% already gained in June 2012).

RESISTANT MATERIALS Coursework Year 10

Exam year

In May/June students will sit an exam worth 40% of their GCSE.

Over the course of the year, students will study the theoretical aspects of Resistant Materials Technology, as well as complete three ‘practical’ skills based projects.

Practical projects will be a wooden box, a trophy and jewellery.

Students will also cover a variety of drawing techniques. Year 11

Controlled assessment year

The coursework consists of a design portfolio and a practical piece made from wood, metal or plastic, or preferably, a combination.

Students will design and make an item of lighting for the home or garden. Revision materials The exam is based around a theme, the title for which is released by the exam board in March. Students will be provided with a full set of revision notes on this theme, they also have a student workbook which they will have been using all year. SCIENCE Double Award – Coursework

No coursework, instead an assessed practical (ISA) with an examination. This normally takes place at the end of January and is finished by February half-term.

ISA is worth 25% of the final mark. Exam

Students will sit written exam papers. There are three exams: B2 – Biology / C2 – Chemistry / P2 - Physics Each examination is worth 25% They also have a chance to retake their Year 10 science course exams: B1 – Biology / C1 – Chemistry / P1 - Physics in June 2013. Triple Science – Coursework

No coursework, instead an assessed practical (ISA) with an examination. This normally takes place at the end of January and should be finished before Easter. Exam Students will sit written exam papers. Triple science students will sit 3 exams in June – Biology (B3), Chemistry (C3) and Physics (P3).
