THE REGISTRATION PROCESS

INITIAL PAYMENTS: ALL CAMPUSES

All students must pay an initial amount of R3 500 BEFORE or on the day of registra-

tion, for all full-time and part-time courses. If the full course fee is less than R3 500,

it must be paid in full at registration. Only students who have paid the above-men-

tioned amount will be registered.

First year students must pay an initial amount of R1 750,00 upon acceptance and a

further R1 750,00 before or on the day of registration.

Returning students (2nd, 3rd and 4th years) must pay an amount of R3 500 before or

on the day of registration.

A student who will be staying in a university residence, must pay an initial amount of

R1 500 in respect of residence fees. The total amount payable upon registration by a

residence student is R5 000 (R3 500 for tuition and R1 500 for residence fees).

All students must register in person at the venues indicated.

Do not hand over money or your registration form to anyone who says he/she

can register on your behalf.

TERMS OF PAYMENT: TUITION FEES

After this initial payment of R3 500,00, the remainder of the fees owing may be paid

in monthly instalments from February to November, at the rate of 10% of the fees for

year courses (or from February to June, at the rate of 20% of the fees for semester

courses). Payment can also be made by a debit order over 9 months from February

to October. There will be no interest charged if the debit order is strictly adhered to.

Debit orders can be drawn on all types of bank accounts (current, savings and trans-

mission), as well as credit cards (not on budget) and debit cards. Debit order forms

are available from the Student Debtors Department.

A discount of 5% for year courses and 2.5% per semester for semester courses will

be allowed if the account is settled before 14 February for year and first semester

course and if the account should be settled by 14 August for second semester

course.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

All students must pay their fees either by means of a direct deposit at a bank

or an electronic payment.

• Your name and student number must be clearly indicated on the deposit slip.

• Please bring your copy of the bank deposit slip on the day of registration.

• Your original National Senior Certificate or the original Advice of Results

statement PLUS a certified copy of your Senior Certificate or Advice of

Results.

• Your original identity document or original birth certificate PLUS certified

copies of these documents.

e) Students transferring from another university or a university of technology:

The original Statement of Results/Academic Record and a letter of good conduct

from another university/university of technology. These documents will be

returned to the student. If you wish to apply for subject exemption/recognition,

you should do so during registration.

The exemption/recognition forms can be obtained from the Faculty Office.

Applications for exemption/recognition must be submitted by 31 January 2013.

These applications must be reviewed by a panel, and you should follow up to

find out whether the application was successful. No late applications will be

accepted.

f) International students:

• A valid study permit as well as proof of valid medical aid cover. No interna-

tional student will be registered without proof of such a permit and medical

aid cover. The University reserves the right to verify the authenticity of all

documentation. For details regarding medical aid cover, please go to pages

9–11 of this brochure.

• All international students, including refugees, should first report to their

Faculties to obtain their registration form and academic clearance, before

proceeding to the registration venue.

THE REGISTRATION PROCESS

POINT 1: ACADEMIC CLEARANCE

Venue: See pages 14 to 26 for Academic Clearance Venues

On the day of registration students will go to the faculty/academic department build-

ing for academic clearance (see pages 14 to 26 under the various campuses).

NB: All international students, including refugees, should first report to their

academic Departments before going to the Registration Venue. See page 9.

Specific rooms will be allocated for each qualification in the faculty/department. Staff

will issue students with a registration, indemnity and subject choice form. The aca-

demic staff will do the subject choices by ticking off and signing the subjects on the

subject choice form. The academic staff will check the registration form and hand it

back to the student who then proceeds to the next point. The student will complete

the indemnity form and amend the registration form, if applicable. Students who still

need to pay will go to the cashiers in the Administration Building, Level 4, Cape Town

Campus or the Administration Building, Ground Floor, Bellville Campus. Students,

who made a deposit at a bank prior to the registration date or have a letter from an

employer/bursar, then proceed for financial clearance.

NO INTERNATIONAL STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO PROCEED TO FINAN-

CIAL CLEARANCE IF NOT IN POSSESSION OF A COMPLETED INTERNATIONAL

CHECkLIST.

All students must go for financial clearance. At this point staff members will sign off

the registration form as proof that the minimum fee has been paid. Returning stu-

dents, who have outstanding balances for 2012 or earlier, will be referred to the

Credit Management Unit (CMU), in the Multipurpose Hall, Level 2, Cape Town

Campus, or the IT Centre, Ground Floor, Room 1.07, Bellville Campus, or the

Administration Building (Room A19), Wellington Campus.

Staff members will capture all changes and required information on the registration

form onto the system. Staff members will staple all documents onto the registration

form and sign the registration form. The student may then proceed to the next point.

NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO PROCEED IF NOT IN POSSESSION OF A

VALID IDENTITY DOCUMENT OR VALID STUDY PERMIT.

POINT 4: CAPTURING OF SUBJECT INFORMATION

Staff members will capture all subject choices. The student will receive three print-

outs (two printouts showing lists of subjects and one account) that the student must

verify. Students are not allowed to register for a subject(s) that has not been

approved. Staff members will verify the captured information against the information

on the registration or subject form. If mistakes occur, the student will be referred back

to the person assisting him/her. The student must sign a copy of the list of subjects

as proof of correctness. The account and other list of subjects will be handed to the

student as proof of registration. Students must submit all documentation at this

point. The student will then proceed to the next point.

A photograph will be taken of all students and a student card will be printed and

issued to the student. The student will also receive a student diary. All senior stu-

dents must hand in their old student card.

a copy of your refugee permit/study permit (made out for the Cape Peninsula

University of Technology); passport, comprehensive medical aid cover valid in

deposit slips and your acceptance registration letter.

• Elsewhere in this booklet you will have read about the dates for registration. We

would like to encourage you to make every attempt to arrive on time. Follow the

guidelines as set out for students in the faculty that you will be entering.

• No international student will be registered without a valid permit and medical aid

MONEY MATTERS:

Returning international students with outstanding debt will not be allowed to register.

Before you can be registered you must provide proof that you have made the follow-

ing payments:

– R3 500 Initial upfront payment

– R1 500 International Administration Levy

(non-refundable once-off payment for all students registering for

the first time – except refugees and students with permanent

residence in South Africa)

– R1 500 If you will be staying in a University residence.

All international students (excluding refugees) are required to make an upfront pay-

ment of 50% of the anticipated fees for the year; the balance of the fees for the year

must be paid in May.

International students (excluding students from Africa, Mauritius or refugees) pay

twice the official University course fees.

Medical aid cover (not applicable to refugees)

If you are an international student you need a valid study permit as well as proof of

valid medical aid cover.

medical scheme (Ingwe Health and Compcare) should also make provision for

approximately R4 308.00 per month for 12 months medical cover (the minimum

acceptable duration according to the Department of Home Affairs).

ORIENTATIONWith this booklet you will have received information relating to orientation. We try as

far as possible to integrate international students into the Faculty and residence ori-

entation programmes, but, in addition to these, have arranged a special internation-

al student orientation on the Friday and Saturday of the last weekend in February and

July 2013.

This programme is geared specifically for first-year international students and will

take place during the first weeks of the term. Watch the notice boards for details

about the time and place.

FINANCIAL AID

BURSARIES AND LOANS

WHAT IS FINANCIAL AID?

Financial assistance is awarded to academically merited and financially needy stu-

dents to assist in paying for study related costs (fees, accommodation, books, etc.).

TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID

1. University Administered Awards (Bursaries)

Donors that make funds available for the University to administer according to set cri-

teria.

University Administered Awards are for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students only.

Applicants must be South African citizens, have a very good academic record, should

be assessed as financially needy and must make a contribution towards their stud-

ies. Size of awards varies.

2. NSFAS (Bursary/Loan)

NSFAS Loans are available for both financially needy and academically deserving

students. The criteria is available in the application form and NSFAS brochure.

3. Merit Bursaries

To first year students who obtained an A–aggregate in grade 12 in the year preced-

ing their first registration at the University. The award is only available during the first

year of registration.

4. Nominated Awards

Off campus agencies (companies, NGO’s, etc) award bursaries / scholarships direct-

ly to students who apply to them.

CLOSING DATES

First-year students: 28 February

Returning students: 31 October (of the previous year)

Second semester students: 31 July

1. Always adhere to closing dates – late applications or late submission of required

docu ments will result in forfeiture of financial assistance.

2 All applicants cannot always be assisted – students are advised to apply widely for

financial aid.
