TABLE MOUNTAIN
The greatest natural asset in the Cape
Peninsula, Table Mountain was carved over
hundreds of millions of years as a result of
dramatic geological movements and climat-
ic changes, varying from ice ages to periods
of low sea level and even volcanic distur-bances. It is South Africas most recognis-
able icon, the most photogenic of structures,
and without it Capetonians would be lost.
Myths and holy ground abound around the
great mountain, such as Van Hunks (an ex-
pirate who took up a smoking challenge
with the Devil hence the mountains
famous table-cloth) and the sacred Circle
of Islam (formed by six tombs aka kra-
mats of holy men).
KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS
Many of South Africas floral treasures are
on display in the easily accessible
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden,
nestled under Table Mountain. Numerous
art and craft exhibitions (as well as flower
shows and sales) occur through the year, asdo music concerts and the incredibly popu-
lar Carols by Candlelight over the Xmas
period. Jan van Riebeeck's hedge was
planted in 1660 to protect the Cape
colonists cattle and it remains to this
day. The conservatory is dominated by a
large baobab, while outside is the evolu-
tionary garden which leads visitors through
the earths floral history.
