2017 SAINT IGNATIUS GAME NOTES #58MILESTOCANTON 3

Wildcats Storylines ...PLAYOFF EXCELLENCE: The Saint Ignatius football team has a long history of playoff success under Head Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69. The Wildcats are making their 28th appearance in the OHSAA Division I Playoffs, including their second in a row and sixth in seven seasons. Under Kyle, the Wildcats have a 72-16 overall record vs. playoff foes.

BO, JACK, AND MAC: The Wildcats have a strong identity on offense – pound the rock until it hurts and surprise offenses with play-action and short passes. The philosophy is working – the Wildcats average 334.5 yards per game on offense. The team’s success on the ground stems from a big, tough offensive line and a strong group of running backs. Jahadge “Bo” Floyd is the bellcow, with 984 yards and 7 touch-downs, averaging over 6 yards per carry. Sophomores Jack Welcsh and Michael McNamara, callups from the JV squad, have been clutch in the last few games. The duo notched 74 and 60 yards, respectively, against Euclid. Welcsh and McNamara also have 4 touchdowns be-tween them. Look for quarterback Dan Alexander to run the ball, too. The senior has 313 rushing yards and 8 TD.

MILESTONE WATCH: The Wildcats’ playmakers could hit some more milestones on Friday. Running back Bo Floyd is just 16 yards away from 1,000 rushing yards on the season. Wideout Sammy Snyder needs 77 yards to hit 1,000 receiving yards on the season, a feat just four Saint Ignatius receivers have achieved. Snyder currently stands at 6th on the leaderboard for receiving yards in a season. He needs 3 more touchdowns to tie the school record for 14 in a season (Connor Ryan, 2008). Kicker Matthew Trickett’s next made field goal will sur-pass Jesse Milligan (15, 1997) for second-most field goals in a season. Tim Shenk leads the way with 20 in 2011.

WRECKING CREW: The Wildcats’ linebackers and defensive line will look to contain a Mentor ground game that has gained traction in the playoffs. Opponents average 3.6 yards per rush against a Wildcats defense that features fearsome ‘backers Logan Joyce and Tommy Eichenberg along with run stuffers Brad Andrich and Zach McMahan.

NO FLY ZONE: The Wildcats’ secondary has seen a host of changes this season and faced all styles of offenses. Against all types of foes, corner Cam Toppin has led the way with 39.5 tackles, 6 interceptions, and 8 pass breakups, including 6 tackles and one pick vs. Mentor in September. Matthew Viancourt and Justin Sands have been clutch at safety, with John Wetula and Daniel Scelza also making an impact. Jett Elad and Connor Cmiel have received plenty of praise. Tadas Tatarunas will completed 25-of-43 passes for 341 yards, 3 TD, and 2 INT in the last matchup, so the Cats will be keying in on the senior.

HOGAN’S HEROES: Browns QB Kevin Hogan joined the Wildcats’ traditional offensive dinner on Thursday, November 9. The former Stanford QB talked to the Wildcats offense about playing opponents twice and answered the team’s questions. At left, Hogan (center) poses with Dan Alexander and Kyle Hall.

2017 SAINT IGNATIUS GAME NOTES 4

ABOUT MENTOR ...Learning about the Cardinals ...HAVE WE MET BEFORE?: The Mentor Cardinals and Saint Ignatius Wildcats are familiar playoff foes. The two teams have met five times in the postseason, with Mentor holding a close advantage. Three of those games were Regional Finals, with Saint Ignatius winning two of the three. Friday’s game will mark the fifth anniversary of the 57-56 triple overtime classic between Mitch Trubisky’s Cardinals and Tim McVey’s Wildcats.

FRIENDLY RIVALS: The Saint Ignatius vs. Mentor rivalry features two of the best coaches in Northeast Ohio – Steve Trivisonno and Chuck Kyle. Trivisonno, a 1981 Mentor grad and 31-year teaching veteran is in his 21st year at the helm of the Cardinals. Kyle, a 1969 Saint Ignatius alum and 45-year English teacher, is in his 35th year with the Wildcats. The two enjoy a friendship and work closely together through USA Football’s youth tackle program. The two have enjoyed some classic showdowns on the gridiron, too. Kyle enjoys a narrow 9-8 advantage over Trivisonno.

TAD TERRIFIC: One of the best quarterbacks in Northeast Ohio, Tadas Tatarunas guides one of the area’s most explosive offenses. The 6’4”, 215-pound quarterback has notched 2,812 passing yards and 28 touchdowns for an offense that averages 42.9 points per game. Mentor’s 31 points represent the second-lowest output of the offense all season, though Tatarunas still notched over 300 yards of offense in the previous matchup.

REGULAR SEASON RECAP: The Wildcats and Cardinals have already met this season, facing off in Week 2. (For a full box score and recap, see p. 13). The Wildcats roared to a 24-10 lead by halftime, though Mentor came back with two touchdowns in the third quarter. Seventeen unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters won it for the Cats. The Wildcats dominated the time of possession battle, 30:45-17:15, and will look to do so again.

MAGIC ON THE LINE: Few defensive linemen have turned heads like Noah Potter this season. The 6’6”, 250-pound defensive end has received offers from Ohio State and Penn State, among others. Potter leads a defense that is peaking at the right time. Potter’s Cards, who employ a 3-4 defense, have allowed just 12 points per game in their last three outings. Potter will look to cause chaos in both the run and passing game against the Wildcats.

THE SECRET WEAPONS: Mentor has long been known for its passing attack. But its key to victory on Friday vs. St. Edward? A stout ground game. Senior running backs Elijah McDougall and Chris Edmond have gained steam in recent weeks. The duo each scored a rushing touchdown last week, with McDougall leading all rushers with 121 yards on 15 carries. As a team, Mentor rushed for 221 yards. The Cardinals gained just 70 vs. Saint Ignatius on Sep-tember 1. Look for the Cards to try to establish the run game.

C JIVAN MEGUERDITCHIAN ‘18

DE ZACHARY MCMAHAN ‘19The defensive line has taken large strides this season, especially this junior end. Replacing All-State end Michael Chime, who also wore #63, McMahan has filled the big shoes well. McMahan occu-pies blockers in the run game, stuffing running lanes, and also pursues the passer well. McMahan will be a major part of the Wild-cats’ quest to stop Mentor’s offense.

BY THE NUMBERS/WILDCAT WATCH

The Wildcats’ ground game and passing at-tack have thrived down the stretch, thanks in part to a strong line. This senior is the heart of the line, calling out blitzes and paving the way for the team’s backs. Meguerditchian Meg-ur-DEE-chee-an), is great student (4.3 GPA) and shows his smarts on the field. He’ll be key to getting the run game going.

2017 SAINT IGNATIUS GAME NOTES 10

EDDIE DWYER’S PREVIEWOHIO CITY - Saint Ignatius, the state’s top-ranked team in Division I by the As-

sociated Press, the No. 1 seed for the OHSAA Region 1 playoffs, the fourth-ranked program in the Midwest by USA Today and the No. 1 team in the seven-county area by Cleveland.com, will put its 11-1 record on the line versus the 11-1 Mentor Cardinals in Friday night’s OHSAA Region 1 title game on Stewart Field in Bed-ford High School’s tradition-rich Bearcat Stadium.

The kickoff from the eastern suburb of Cleveland that produced Hall of Fame baseball outfielder, the late Elmer Flick, will be 7:30.

Although record 11-time Division I State Champion Saint Ignatius leads its all-time football series with Mentor, 13-8, including a 41-31 victory at Mentor in Week 2 of this season, the Cardinals hold a slight edge in their postseason encounters with the Wildcats, 3-2.

The first meeting in the OHSAA football playoffs between Saint Ignatius and Mentor took place in Saint Ignatius’ 14-0 state championship season of 1992, a 38-13 regional final triumph by the Wildcats.

Mentor and Saint Ignatius wouldn’t meet again in the postseason until 2003, when the Cardinals walked away with a 31-0 victory in a second-round matchup.

After losing to Mentor during the regular season of 2011, 38-24, the Wildcats, en route to their record “Eleven in ‘11” State Championship season, turned back then junior Mitch Trubisky and the Cardinals, 23-17, in a regional final at this corner’s favorite venue, atmosphere-rich Lakewood Stadium, aka “The Madhouse on Madison.”

In 2012, the tables were reversed as Saint Ignatius soundly defeated Mentor, 48-21, in Week 3 of the regular season on Byers Field, but was eliminated by the Mitch Trubisky-led Cardinals in an epic OHSAA regional final, 57-56, in three overtimes at a packed Byers Field.

That 2012 will-testing night on Ridge Road and Day Drive saw two of the finest players in the history of Ohio High School Football, Mr. Football quarter-back Mitch Trubisky and the Wildcats’ gifted All-Ohio tailback Tim McVey, put their endless talents and desire on display. Saint Ignatius wide receiver Michael Siragusa, quarterback Mile LaManna and linebacker Kyle Berger also turned in memorable performances.

Time passages will usually produce some special ties, as is the case with Mitch Trubisky, whose Quarterback Coach with the Chicago Bears is former Saint Ignatius All-Ohio Quarterback and basketball standout Dave Ragone ‘98.

In what was the last postseason encounter between the ‘Cats and the Car-dinals, that is until this coming Friday night, another gifted athlete from Mentor, senior quarterback Conner Krizancic, helped key a 26-3 regional final victory over Saint Ignatius on an extremely cold, to say the least, November 23rd, 2013 night at Byers Field.

This old-timer has one more classic in the Wildcats-Cardinals football series, one that took place just two seasons ago at Mentor’s Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium.

With Saint Ignatius’ first-team All-Ohio senior quarterback Dennis Grosel (now at Boston College) and a promising 6-foot-4 sophomore quarterback from Mentor named Tadas Tatarunas setting records at their respective schools on that perfect early September 2015 night, Mentor turned away Saint Ignatius, 63-56, in a Week 2 regular season encounter out on Center Street.

The Cardinals produced the game-winning touchdown when on a second-and 5 from the Wildcats’ 10-yard line and the final 15 seconds ticking off the clock, Tatarunas rolled left under heavy pressure, regained his balance and fired a touchdown pass to one of his exceptional receivers in 2015, senior Malik Porter, who broke free across the back of the end zone.

Grosel passed for 415 yards and six touchdowns and Tatarunas, who ac-counted for 12 of the game’s final 14 points with his powerful arm, threw for 531 yards and four touchdowns. Saint Ignatius ran 73 plays for 615 yards and Mentor totaled 823 yards on 77 plays.

If that doesn’t whet your football appetite for the Friday night lights in Bedford’s Bearcat Stadium, we will remind about the Wildcats’ Week two victory over the Cardinals this season and how Mentor advanced to face Saint Ignatius for a sixth time in the postseason.

The St. Edward Eagles, I’m sure you are quite familiar with them, finished their memorable season at 10-2 after losing both the annual Week 10 regular-season showdown with the Wildcats, 17-10 at Lakewood Stadium, and last weekend’s OHSAA regional semifinal matchup with Mentor, 21-13, on Byers Field.

The Greater Cleveland Conference Champion Cardinals, currently on a 10-game winning streak after their Week 2 loss to Saint Ignatius, ranked sixth in the final Division I State Poll and seeded third in Region 1, stunned the state’s third-ranked and second-seeded Region 1 Eagles with a sound defensive effort and a ground game that actually hurt St. Edward more than Tatarunas’ productive arm.

Mentor’s standout 6-foot-6, 250-pound junior defensive end Noah Potter, a The Ohio State University recruit, emphasized to the media after the victory over St. Edward that the Cardinals’ defense was a cohesive unit against an Eagles of-fense that had its way for most of the season.

As far as the Week 2 matchup with Saint Ignatius on what was another per-fect night for football in the Cardinals’ Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium, Mentor’s defense struggled a bit, especially down the stretch in the eventual 10-point loss to the ‘Cats. Saint Ignatius totaled 518 yards of offense.

By Eddie Dwyer The Cardinals, who will enter Friday night’s regional final averaging nearly 43 points and 485 yards per game, were able to total 411 yards of offense during their annual early season encounter with Saint Ignatius. Those 411 yards included 341 yards and three touchdowns through the air by Tatarunas. Tadas also scored on a 5-yard run. Tatarunas will enter the higher stakes rematch with the Wildcats having passed for 2,812 yards and 28 touchdowns through 12 games.

Along with a key momentum-swinging interception return by savvy and skilled junior safety Danny Scelza just before halftime, a play that Mentor’s outstanding Head Coach Steve Trivisonno referred to as the turning point, Saint Ignatius’ 41-31 Week 2 victory in Mentor featured 6 receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns by All-Northeast Lakes District first-team senior wide receiver Sammy Snyder, 97 yards and a touchdown rushing by senior tailback/Captain Mark Bobinski, and “Bo being Bo.”

Junior tailback Jahadge “Bo” Floyd, in helping the Wildcats eat up valuable time and keep the ball out of Tatarunas’ hands, powered his way for 114 yards and a 10-yard scoring run on 22 carries. Jahadge also had a combined reception and run of 29 yards. It was the Varsity debut of the “Bo Show.”

That said, Bo Floyd will be the first to tell you that it all started with Saint Ig-natius’ offensive line, as the men up front clearly won the battle of the trenches versus Mentor in Week 2. Wildcats Hall of Fame Head Coach Mr. Chuck Kyle ‘69 emphasized how pleased he was with the O-Line’s ability to pick up the Cardi-nals’ various blitz packages.

A CASE FOR THE DEFENSE: Along with Danny Scelza’s key pick, the other big defensive efforts versus Mentor in Week 2 included the third of what are now six interceptions for first-team All-District senior cornerback Cam Toppin. Cam also turned in six unassisted tackles against the Cardinals and returned four kick-offs for a total of 57 yards.

Tough and talented All-District junior linebacker Tommy Eichenberg, one of the best in all of Ohio, also left an impression on the Mentor staff by making sev-en solo tackles, including a key sack, and this old gridiron grinder was impressed with the pressure off the edge that Week 2 night that was applied by first-team All-District senior linebacker Logan Joyce.

COACH KYLE ON FRIDAY NIGHT’S REGIONAL FINAL 2017 REMATCH “A Mentor-Saint Ignatius game can always be an adventure, put it that way,”

said the man who, along with the record 11 state titles, has guided his Wildcats to two state runner-up finishes (1996 and 2016), a 72-16 record in the OHSAA playoffs, 15 regional championships, three national titles (1989, 1993 and 1995) and a national runner-up in 2008.

“The way the momentum flows, one offense gets on a roll and sometimes it’s hard to break that momentum,” the Northeast Lakes District’s 2017 Division I Coach of the Year said. “With offenses like Mentor, and ours sometimes, there are things that are created by the success of a certain play. Then teams try to adjust to that and it opens up a different play. You’re kind of playing a chess game.

“So I think it’s always a fun game to play in,” continued Coach Kyle. “You look at the attendance. People enjoy the game because it’s always pretty exciting. It’s also a game where you can get up by 10 points and that’s nothing in this game. Ten points is nothing. There is no reason to relax at all, because both teams have a tendency to rally a little bit and go right down the field in a minute, and now you have a ball game. That capability is always there.”

Coach Kyle emphasized again how last week’s Region 1 semifinals featured four very good football teams - Saint Ignatius, Mentor, Euclid and St. Edward. “I think our region was the toughest and is the toughest this year. From team 1 to team 8, they’re all very good football teams. I thought the Mentor-St. Eds game was going to be a real tough game. We’ve played them both and that is what I would say.”

Coach Kyle said what came out of the Mentor-St. Edward game was Mentor’s ability to run the ball effectively, that it was a big contribution to Mentor’s vic-tory.

“When you play Mentor, you know you have to work on your coverage all week,” Coach Kyle pointed out. “But with their running game being effective, it’s like what now am I seeing? They can have you on the run. You’re trying to concentrate on your coverage and all of sudden a running back is finding some seams and gashing you a little bit.”

Mentor’s defensive effort versus St. Edward was something Coach Kyle said has to be credited too.

“St. Eds can run the ball and throw the ball, and I think the secondary from Mentor did take some of the passing away. That gave Mentor some good field position. Mentor was able several times to find a short field.”

A strong game from his six to seven players up front defensively is what Coach Kyle will be looking for on Friday night. That, and four full quarters of Saint Ignatius football.

If you can’t make it out to Bedford for Friday night’s game, the golden tones of the Saint Ignatius Broadcast Network will bring it to you live from Bearcat Stadium. And the savvy Jack O’Rourke will be lending his expertise to the broadcast from the sideline.

See you along the sideline of Bedford Bearcat Stadium on Friday night, where I have nothing but great memories of the fine people at Bedford who treated this seasoned reporter with such kindness and hospitality during my Plain Dealer coverage days. Let me say again, Thank You!

2017 SAINT IGNATIUS GAME NOTES #58MILESTOCANTON 11

EUCLID RECAP BEDFORD - The Region’s top-seeded Wildcats of Hall of Fame Head

Football Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69 defeated the Panthers for the 13th con-secutive time in what are now 14 meetings on the gridiron between Saint Ignatius and Euclid. The ‘Cats are 7-0 all time versus the Panthers in the OHSAA Playoffs. Euclid’s only triumph over Saint Ignatius in football came in Week 2 of the 1987 regular season, 30-7.

Fourth-seeded Euclid closed its fall to recall at 9-3, with two of its setbacks coming to Saint Ignatius, including a 34-20 loss in Week 3 of the regular season on Byers Field in Parma’s Robert M. Boulton Stadium. The Panthers were also defeated by Mentor during Week 9 of the regular season, 61-59, in the Cardinals’ Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium. No, that final score is not a misprint.

The record 11-time Division I State Champion Wildcats will take a four-game winning streak and an 11-1 record into next Friday’s (Nov. 17) OHSAA Region 1 Final matchup with the third-seeded Mentor Cardinals. The Cardinals of Head Coach Steve Trivisonno are also 11-1 after turning away second-seeded St. Edward, 21-13, in Friday night’s other Region 1 Semifinal on Byers Field in Parma’s Robert M. Boulton Stadium. The Eagles wrapped up their season at 10-2.

Next Friday’s 7:30 pm kickoff with Mentor will be at a site to be de-termined by the OHSAA this weekend. The Cardinals are currently on a 10-game winning streak after losing to Saint Ignatius, 41-31, in Week 2 of the regular season at Mentor’s Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium.

Although the Wildcats lead their all-time gridiron series with the Cardi-nals,13-8, Mentor has won the last two OHSAA postseason playoff games between the perennial big-school powers - a Mitch Trubisky-led 57-56, three-overtime Regional Final classic in 2012 and a Connor Krizancic-led 26-3 Regional Final victory in 2013. If Wildcats fans thought Friday night’s victory over Euclid in Bedford was cold, all I can say is that you should have been at the Mentor-Saint Ignatius Regional Final in 2013 on Byers Field. Coldest conditions I have ever encountered in more than four de-cades of area high school football coverage.

As always, this corner will be previewing next Friday night’s Regional Final matchup with Mentor early this coming week.

Now on to the Friday night lights highlights that took place at the newly re-turfed Stewart Field in Bedford High School’s atmosphere-rich Bearcat Stadium.

EARLY MISTAKES ALLOW EUCLID TO STAY IN STRIKING DISTANCE Thanks to a leaping interception by strong, savvy and quick off the ball

junior linebacker Tommy Eichenberg that saw Tommy make a great read off an attempted screen pass, and some impressive quick-burst running by junior tailback Jahadge “Bo” Floyd, the ‘Cats were knock, knock, knocking on touchdown’s door in the early going.

A turnover raised its ugly head, however, and the Panthers took pos-session deep in their territory.

Saint Ignatius’ defense came up big again, however, and forced Coach Jeff Rotsky’s team to punt from deep in its territory. With Eichenberg ap-plying the pressure off the snap, the Euclid punter got off a kick that went almost straight up in the air before coming to rest at the Panthers’ 23-yard line.

Coach Kyle’s top-ranked in Ohio Wildcats would go on to take a 3-0 lead on a 39-yard field goal by outstanding senior kicker Matthew Trickett with 6 minutes and 36 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

After a heads-up run off a scramble by Saint Ignatius’ talented two-dimensional senior quarterback Danny Alexander, the Wildcats were in Panthers territory again. A key procedure penalty, however, and a sack by Euclid’s aggressive junior linebacker Sean Jackson thwarted that potential drive.

Saint Ignatius’ defense put together another exceptional series that was highlighted with two sacks from the ever-present Eichenberg. After the D forced Euclid to punt from its end zone, the Wildcats, following another punt that was certainly not a distance maker, went to work again deep in striking distance.

In what was an up-and down first half, the ‘Cats’ fumbled the ball away at the Panthers’ 20.

THE DEFENSE CONTINUES TO DOMINATE, THE OFFENSIVE LINE TAKES CONTROL, THE YOUNG BUCKS RUN TO DAYLIGHT AND ONE OF THE AREA’S TOP PASS/CATCH COMBOS HAS ITS MOMENT

Taking possession at its 27-yard line, Saint Ignatius, faced with a third-and-six from its 31, clicked on a pass from Alexander to multi-skilled senior

By Eddie Dwyer wide receiver Connor Kennedy, who put together a smooth catch and run off a crossing pattern.

With his team facing a third-and-16 from the Euclid 31, Alexander took charge with his uncanny vision and pocket presence.

First Danny saw nothing available through the air, tucked the ball away and rambled for a first-and-goal at the 9. Then Offensive Coordinator Nick Restifo’s field general took it home off a great read and went untouched into the open end zone of Bearcat Stadium off a nice move to his right with 4 minutes and 20 seconds left in the first half. Trickett’s extra-point kick was high and true, and the ever-faithful and creative Wildcats’ Stu-dent Body could have been heard out on Northfield Road.

Leading 10-0, Saint Ignatius, ranked among the nation’s best in USA Today’s Midwest Top-10 Rankings and Super 25 National Computer Poll, continued to get exceptional pressure up front defensively from Eichen-berg, All-District first-team senior linebacker Logan Joyce, tough and as determined as they come senior nose tackle Aidan Gill and All-American senior offensive tackle/defensive lineman Darian Kinnard, who is a Univer-sity of Kentucky recruit.

With Coach Adam Rini’s and Coach Paul Yappel’s offensive linemen hungry for some second half test of wills in the trenches, Coach Kyle and his staff turned to their young, but oh so talented running backs, “Bo” Floyd, sophomore tailback/linebacker Jack Welcsh and sophomore line-backer/running back Mike McNamara.

Saint Ignatius, scoring five touchdowns off five second-half posses-sions, sandwiched touchdown runs of 3 yards by Floyd and 6 yards from Welcsh around an exceptional 75-yard catch and run for a TD by the Panthers’ gifted wide receiver Dre’Von Lindsay.

The Wildcats would then seal another spot among Ohio’s Division I football elite eight on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Alexander to All-District first team senior wide receiver Sammy Snyder, an effort that saw Sammy catch the ball across the middle on the dead run and, after out-running the pursuit to the corner of the end zone, putting on a clever little move to get past the pylon, a highlight-reel, 33-yard second-effort TD run up the gut by Welcsh in which Jack broke several tackles, and McNamara’s 2-yard score off a drive that saw Mike account for all of the 60 yards off five carries.

Saint Ignatius’ defense did an exceptional job of keeping Euclid’s record-setting tailback Ronald Lee under control, as Lee finished with a hard-earned 100 yards on 24 carries. The Panthers’ Brandon Wright totaled 71 yards on nine carries.

Floyd led the ground game for the ‘Cats with 118 yards on 14 carries, Alexander had 76 yards rushing on just seven carries, and Welcsh totaled 74 yards on 10 carries. Through the air, Alexander was 7-for-11 for 109 yards. This old gridiron grinder also tips his cap to junior cornerback Jett Elad for his coverage in the end zone that prevented a touchdown and sophomore defensive back Connor Cmiel for his pass breakup on a deep ball.

FROM COACH KYLE: “The first half, we had opportunities we did not capitalize on and that was frustrating. The defense was doing a great job.

“Danny (Alexander) was finding some seams and with his threat of running, they had to honor it,” Coach Kyle continued. “That got the dive (play) going. The just couldn’t close on the dive, they had to honor Danny.”

Coach Kyle added that Tommy Eichenberg showed everyone in at-tendance what he can do. “Tommy’s been doing that all year,” Coach Kyle said with a wide smile. “We’re so fortunate to have Tommy and Logan Joyce on the other side. They are two outside backers who just make so many big plays. I thought the interior line did a very good job, too. Euclid is a team that runs the ball. Lee is amazing, but I thought we did a real good job of bottling that up and closing the seams.

“We still haven’t played four full quarters all year, and, with whose left, we can’t have a bad quarter.”

FROM TOMMY EICHENBERG: “We have to come out and play our way, whether the offense is having a good night or not. That was our mindset the whole game.

“I blitzed, and the tackle just kind of let me go,” said Tommy of his big-time interception off an attempted screen pass. “The coaches were emphasizing that they like to do a lot of screen passes. The tackle didn’t block me, I saw the running back release and I popped out

“ A great team,” Tommy added in reference to the Mentor Cardinals and next Friday’s Regional Final matchup. “We’re going to have a great week of practice and it’s going to be an awesome game. They have a great quarterback (Cardinals senior Tadas Tatarunas).”

In 1994, Bedford High School christened Bedford Bearcat Stadium and several other facilities on campus, including a baseball diamond, football/soccer practice fields, improved tennis courts, and an auxiliary gym. The improvements were made possible by a 1.48-mill bond issue. Bedford Bearcat Stadium is a great all-around facility. The stadium features seating for 5,000 fans, a well-sized press box, an all-weather 8-lane track, along with a connected building. This facility hosts locker rooms, a concessions area, restrooms, a weight room, and coaches’ and team meeting rooms. The press box can host a large number of media with a two-tiered indoor booth. The press box features hard-line Internet connections and ample space for media to work. The stadium is the home stadium of the Bedford High School Bearcats. Bedford High School was founded in 1954, with several renovations to the school since then. The stadium also serves as the host for several other area high school football teams, including the Benedictine Bengals. Entering Friday’s game vs. Mentor, the Wildcats have a 5-0 all-time record at Bedford Bearcat Stadium.

LAST MATCHUP: WEEK 2Wildcats thwart Cardinals with a fierce offensive assault

MENTOR - The Wildcats improved to 2-0 with a 41-31 triumph over the Mentor Cardinals (1-1). On the strength of touchdown passes of 28 yards and 12 yards from quarter-back Kyle Hall to his receivers Sammy Snyder and Michael Drobnick, and the ensuing extra-point kicks by Matthew Trickett, Saint Ignatius led, 24-10, at halftime. Mentor came back in the third quarter behind quarterback Tadas Ta-tarunas. Tatarunas scored on a 5-yard run and with wide receiver Luke Floriea on a 17-yard TD pass that, after Conor McIntosh’s extra-point kick, knotted the score at 24 with 6 minutes and 32 seconds left in the third quarter. Saint Ignatius regained the lead when Hall saw Snyder in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown as time expired in the third quarter. Trickett’s PAT was good, and the Wild-cats led, 31-24. Following Snyder’s second TD on the night, Jahadge Floyd, powered his way for a 10-yard

scoring run. Floyd produced 114 yards on 22 carries. Jahadge also had a reception of 29 yards. A 42 yard field goal by Trickett increased the Wildcats’ lead to 41-24, and Saint Ignatius withstood a 46-yard touchdown pass from Tatarunas to wide receiver Steven Baird with 4:21 left on the clock.

THE EARLY GOING: Saint Ignatius took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter behind a 32-yard field goal by Trickett and led, 10-0, after tailback Mark Bobinski scored on a 2-yard run with 8:10 to go in the second quarter. Trickett made the extra point. Mentor would tie the score at 10 on a 22-yard field goal by McIntosh, a 13-yard touchdown pass from Tatarunas to wide receiver Logan Shea and the PAT by McIntosh.

BY THE NUMBERS: Jahadge “Bo” Floyd’s had a big night on the ground, Sammy Snyder, had six receptions

for 115 yards along with two TD catches and Michael Drobnick had 82 yards and a touchdown on four recep-tions. Bobinski rushed for 97 yards and a score on 23 car-ries. Tatarunas was 25-of-43 through the air for 341 yards and three touchdown passes. Kyle Hall was 14-of-30 for 291 yards and three touchdown strikes. Saint Ignatius led in first downs, 24-18, rushing yards, 227 to 70, and total of-fense, 518 yards to 411 for Mentor.

A CASE FOR THE DEFENSE: Cornerback Danny Scelza came up with an interception of Tatarunas. Defensive back Cam Toppin made his third interception on the season and had six unassisted tackles. Cam also returned four kick-offs for a total of 57 yards. Linebacker Tommy Eichenberg made seven tackles, including a sack, and linebacker Logan Joyce applied pressure off the edge.

#58MILESTOCANTON

On September 17, 1920, seven men, including the legendary Jim Thorpe met in Canton, Ohio to form the American Professional Football Association (APFA), a precursor to today’s National Football League. An early hotbed of football, Canton was selected

as the site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which opened its doors on September 7, 1963. Before the Hall of Fame came into existence, Faw-

cett Stadium was erected in 1938. The facility housed the successful McKinley Bulldogs. After the Hall of Fame was built in Fawcett’s back-

yard, the stadium hosted the Hall of Fame Game be-ginning in 1962. The first two Hall of Fame enshrine-ments took place in Fawcett Stadium, too.For a period of time in the 1990’s and 2000’s, Faw-

cett Stadium hosted the OHSAA’s Division I State Championship games. Saint Ignatius football fans be-came well-acquainted during this time, as the Wild-cats played six state title games at Fawcett Stadium. The Wildcats’ third state title in 1991 was played at

Fawcett, as the Football Cats defeated Centerville,

24-21. The Wildcats also won titles in 1992, 1999, 2001, 2008, and 2011 in front of adoring Wildcats fans in the historical stadium.During years in which the Wildcats played at

Fawcett, the football program adopted the phrase 58 Miles to Fawcett. The team’s 2017 hashtag plays off that theme. The stadium was renamed Tom Benson Hall of

Fame Stadium after its most recent renovation, completed in August 2017. So, the Wildcats retired the phrase 58 Miles to Fawcett. With the return of the OHSAA State Champion-

ship to Canton, the theme #58MilesToCanton has been adopted. The theme will be used on social media, apparel, and other items. After falling short of a state title in 2016, the Wildcats will look to retun to Canton in 2017 and claim the program’s state record 12th state title.
