S p l i n t e r W o r k s Private View of a Custom-made HQSplinter Works’ mission is to create furniture that is engaging and inspiring. Through their designs they strive to enrich the lives of users, enhancing their environment and elevating the experience of everyday life. Their aim is to create work that is individual, thought provoking, aesthetically beguiling, intelligently designed and seamlessly functional.

he designs are experimental and theatrical, whilst

maintaining the importance of the inherent function of the piece. The work revels in playing visual tricks where balance is often questioned. Opposing dichotomies of solidity versus weightlessness, motion versus stillness, and strength versus fragility are played out in ambitious designs through innovative materials. Splinter Works can tailor designs to suit clients’ requirements and also produce unique commissions where every element, from the intended location and practical requirements, to striking a personal resonance with the commissioner, can be considered and accomplished.

All the pieces are all handmade in Britain. Splinter Works was formed in 2009 and is a collaboration between Miles Hartwell and Matt Withington. The design studio is based in the UK, thirty minutes south of London.

The Project

Our client had a stone barn built within the grounds of his country home to serve as an executive suite and a place to house his classic car collection. We were commissioned to plan the layout and design custom-made furniture to fulfi ll the many functions required of the space.

The client is a classic car and aviation enthusiast, so we had an abundance of fantastic aesthetic references and a strong direction for the style we wanted to create for him.

We began by delineating the

large upper space into functional areas, his main working area, meeting area, and relaxing space. On the ground floor, his car collection, and games area.

The main linchpin of the layout was positioning the desk, as we wanted to incorporate the best vantage point of the long views down the valley through the full height glass wall. We were also mindful that the desk needed to command the space and have a good line of sight of the entrance, which we designed so that visitors arriving are visible to him before they enter the space. The Wing desk with its aeronautical design influences, was itself split into two zones with one desktop sited at an angle for computer work, and another dedicated to working with his assistant.

The designs are experimental and theatrical, whilst maintaining the importance of the inherent function of the piece.

In the central area, we designed a generous conference table, Soar, to seat 10. Taking the form of a modified diamond shape, it allows all the participants of the meeting to see and hear each other, regardless of where they are seated. With its striking sculpted metal base, glass and light burr olive ash wood veneer, it brightens and highlights the centre of the room.

Between the meeting area and the neighbouring lounge area, we commissioned a painting by Tim Layzell, depicting a graphic, retrospective, motor-racing scene. It not only perfectly references the automotive design influences, but also conceals a large television screen, which can slide from either side, serving as a conference screen during meetings, or a television in the lounge area. As it opens, it blocks out the small windows on either side, shutting out the unwanted daylight from behind the screen.

At the end of the barn we sited the lounging area, which looks down onto the esteemed car collection through the glass floor. In this area we made it feel more intimate with a sofa, bookcase, credenza and narrower windows. The credenza is on wheels to allow for flexibility of arrangement.

No architectural features delineate the zones, instead we used functional counterpoints, like a dramatic open fire between the lounge and meeting area, and two cabinets, to break up the space. The cabinet nearest the desk houses IT and telecom equipment, and the other is a self-contained coffee station, to serve the conference and desk area. It includes a boiling

Page 7: Refurb Renovation News - Issue 9 - 2014

water tap and drainer on the counter, and houses a wine fridge, waste bin and crockery set below. Both are executed in the same materials as the conference table with a chamfered edge to keep the look masculine, sharp and business like.

Very subtle motifs for this project are evident in the echoed shape of a wide-angle ‘V’, seen in the Wing desk top, the inset handles on the cabinets and the base of the coffee table in the working area. For personal appeal, we also recreated the house’s branding on the internal glass door. Colour-matching concrete to the Cotswolds stone walls, we cast the client’s house logo into a circular handle which sits in a glass door as a discreet underpinning of the building’s provenance.

The furniture on the perimeter of the room uses darker walnut woods and bold colours, which fade into the centre of the room to softer, burr olive ash wood, and reflective metal surfaces.

Splinter Works can tailor designs to suit clients’ requirements and also produce unique commissions where every element, from the intended location and practical requirements, to striking a personal resonance with the commissioner, can be considered and accomplished.

Above the gleaming conference table, we were commissioned to produce a large suspended light, the resulting Nest light, with its random organic twisting branches, acts as a complete contrast to the strong geometry of the tables. Executed in precision-engineered steel, it also references and sits comfortably with the steel roof ties in the surrounding rafters.

Behind the lounge area is a staircase, which leads down through a double height atrium into the central vestibule, with the car collection to one side, and games area to the other. Dividing the zones is a bar, made in concrete, also colour-matched to the stone wall, it is polished flat on top, and rough hewn on the edges to create a similar stone effect. The red under-cabinets pick up the hot red paintwork on the racing livery. Two mechanics workstations are situated between the cars, smartly appointed in solid walnut.

To create an impactful vestibule, we mounted a prized set of Rubens Barrichello overalls in a customised glass casing, and suspended in the pitched roof, a larger scaled Nest light. This illuminates the vaulted atrium, and draws the eye up to the stairs, which lead up to the office. www.splinterworks.co.uk

Britain must continue to preserve its heritage, say brick specialists

ith an increase in demand for heritage building materials,

H.G. Matthews have revived the almost lost art of hand-made wood-fi red bricks.

This ancient technique, originally used in the 18th century, is now being used to create over 500,000 bricks each year at the Brickworks in Buckinghamshire. The company is the only brick maker in Europe with the skills and infrastructure to produce hand-made wood-fi red bricks, and interest from overseas is growing.

The distinguished appearance of the bricks, in terms of the unique colours and glazed eff ects created by the wood-burning kiln makes them ideal for restoring historic buildings.

Jim Matthews, third generation owner of the family-run brick works, H.G. Matthews said:

“The production of traditional wood-fi red bricks is more than

Demand for traditional brick making is on the rise as Britain looks to conserve some of its most prestigious buildings, say H.G. Matthews.

“We’re not only seeing increased demand from the heritage and conservation sectors but also those looking to develop brand new properties and recreate an authentic look.” Jim Matthews. owner of H.G. Matthews.

“Not only have these bricks helped to restore some historic buildings, but using wood rather than oil as the heat fuel to dry the bricks is welcomed by the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.” Jim Matthews. owner of H.G. Matthews.

alternative technique that can produce such distinctive bricks that will match or echo the feel and look of an historic building.”

The manufacturing process that each wood-fi red brick goes through at HG Matthews is closed-loop. This starts from the clay that the company sources from the surrounding land to mould the bricks, to the sustainable biomass used to dry the bricks, through to the conservation of nearby woodlands. It is the indigenous clay, the temperature of fi ring and the type of kiln used that is responsible for the subtle changes in the colours

just a passing trend. Britain trades on its heritage and like many industries, brick manufacturing has seen production concentrated in fewer and fewer, but much larger factories. If we want to continue to preserve some of Britain’s fi nest buildings then traditional techniques such as wood fi ring must not be lost.

“While the process of creating a hand-made wood-fi red brick is rooted in tradition, there isn’t an

of the hand-made bricks.

Jim Matthews added: “We’re not only seeing increased demand from the heritage and conservation sectors but also those looking to develop brand new properties and recreate an authentic look. Not only have these bricks helped to restore some historic buildings, but using wood rather than oil as the heat fuel to dry the bricks is welcomed by the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.”

As the importance of sustainability in the construction industry continues to grow, those businesses that actively practice green initiatives are being rewarded. H.G. Matthews has managed to adapt to changing landscapes, such as the green building movement, but retain traditional skills and techniques to meet ever-growing demands. www.hgmatthews.com

Armstrong Ceilings reign at Kings

ood lay-in tiles and a customised wood canopy are helping to define and soften a new student

work/social area as part of the interior refurbishment of the university’s Hudson Beare Building on its Kings Buildings campus south of the city centre.

The 50m2 canopy comprises 1200mm x 600mm US cherry veneer plain wood planks, some containing smoke detectors and movement-sensitive lighting, with a Vector edge detail which gives a narrow 6mm reveal for a sleek, monolithic look, within a Prelude 24 XL2 grid.

This is complemented in the same room by three rows of 600mm x 600mm plain US cherry MicroLook lay-in tiles, installed between plasterboard, on a Prelude 15 XL2 grid, as well as 16m2 of these tiles in circulation areas.

In addition, the main lecture theatre, which is one of the early purpose-built concrete lecture theatre structures and Grade B listed, featured 180m2 of Armstrong’s 1200mm x 600mm Ultima OP tiles installed on a Prelude XL2 grid. These mineral tiles perform acoustically to Sound Absorption Class A.

The £330,000 project was the subject of a “Pimp my school” project to improve the student social/break out study space. This resulted in the opening up of a larger room to create an additional such space.

There were also cosmetic improvements to teaching rooms and toilets, with a third phase comprising the removal of a small unused servitor’s box and lobby to accommodate a mobile staffed coffee bar and some lounge seating. Armstrong

Engineering students at the University of Edinburgh are getting a little extra help with their studies from Armstrong Ceilings.

Ceilings were supplied by SIG Interiors and installed in the 850m2 single-storey 1950/60s concrete crosswall building by Universal Ceilings in two phases, culminating by March 2014.

Adrian Cavaye, an interior designer at the university’s design group in estates and buildings, has used Armstrong Ceilings for the past 27 years, most recently on a refurbishment of the Edinburgh College of Art.

He said: “We specified Armstrong for their range of timber tile and grid solutions. There were no set performance or aesthetic requirements but the finish quality was as I would expect from Armstrong.”

He added: “We made use of an under-used room to increase the student space by incorporating some group discussion desks, individual study/laptop work desks and lounge seating. It was this area primarily that I wanted to soften the feel of the ceiling by incorporating a flyover timber veneered ceiling.

“This creates a more defined, quieter work area and softens the feel with the wood finish. The lay-in grid tiles were set in a standard MicroLook grid but the contrast in finish between a plastered ceiling and wood always works.”

HANSON STRUCTHERM NEW VIDEOSshowcase its EWI and SEWI systems

Hanson Structherm has produced three new videos showcasing the installationof its EWI and SEWI systems:

Structural ExternalWall Insulation - Low Rise

Structherm NCS2 Low Rise ExternalWall Insulation

Structural ExternalWall Insulation - High Rise

The videos are available to view on the Hanson Structherm website (www.struc-therm.co.uk) as well as via You Tube and show the typical installation processand finishing options available.

The systems are used extensively in the refurbishment of social housing, highrise blocks and non-traditional housing and provide an efficient and costeffective way of improving the thermal performance, resulting in reduced CO2emissions and lower energy bills. The SEWI system also extends the life ofdefective properties which might otherwise have been demolished.

Damian Haigh, Hanson Structherm marketing executive, said:“We developed thenew videos to help give contractors, local authorities, housing associations andbuilders a better understanding of how the different systems work. Importantly, they also show just how little disruption is involved in their installation, allowingresidents to stay in their homes while the work is being carried out.”

NG BAILEY COMPLETES TECHNICAL MILESTONE AT MANCHESTER CENTRAL LIBRARY

undreds of the library’s most historical paper documents have been returned to the

archive, following the extensive work to refurbish the lower ground floor archive area as part of Manchester City Council’s project to transform the Grade II* listed buildings.

This comes as the company completes a full scope of mechanical and electrical services, working alongside main contractor Laing O’Rourke, as part of the three-year construction project to transform the buildings, opening up

NG Bailey has completed and handed over the paper archive area of Manchester Central Library - marking a key technical milestone in the ambitious transformation of Manchester’s Town Hall Extension and Central Library.

more of the space to the public than ever before, and improving services while also restoring key heritage features.

The renovation of the paper storage rooms was a particularly important part of the project, to preserve the library’s most valuable paper archives in environmental conditions meeting National Archives standards while reducing the carbon footprint, fuel and other operating costs. It involved installing powered racking for the books, pamphlets and other documents, as well as stringent

heating and lighting controls.

Mike Darlington, managing director of NG Bailey’s Engineering division, said: “This project has been a real opportunity to use our expertise installing state-of-the-art, 21st century services, into a preserved Grade II* listed building.

“It has also been an exciting challenge to meet the standards required as the building is listed. We had to work really hard to install the modern facilities and air conditioning within an existing fabric that couldn’t be touched. Our design and construction teams worked extremely closely with the client and English Heritage to achieve the results.

“Alongside this we had to control the humidity of an area with floors made out of concrete - so securing a stable environment with such a porous

material was a big achievement for us.” Councillor Rosa Battle, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure for Manchester City Council, said: “From floor to ceiling to its state-of-the-art facilities, the transformation of Manchester Central Library has been all about painstaking attention to detail. The enthusiastic reactions show that Central Library is a spectacular asset for the city.”

The key to achieving this in the storage rooms was to steadily bring temperature and humidity down to stable conditions at the agreed set points, which took the team three months to achieve.

The conditions in the rooms are being controlled using a sophisticated Building Management System (BMS), allowing the Manchester City Council

team to monitor and watch conditions at a minute level and spot any potentially damaging environmental changes as soon as they occur.

Now complete, the transformed Town Hall Extension and Central Library has provided a bright and spacious ground floor, which was previously closed to the public, into a light and airy space with a cafe, performance area and film booths. There is also a specialist search room where staff can help readers to access some of the library’s most historic and valuable works, which are stored in the climate-controlled book depositories on the lower floor.

More than 2,000 people passed through the doors of the St Peter’s Square landmark in the first three hours after it reopened.

The original, authentic Peel Away® range is now available exclusively through Barrettine Products Ltd and approved Trade stockists. The Peel Away® paint removal system is designed for the complete removal of accumulated layers of paint with up to 32 coats of paint removed in one application. Use will not damage profiles or other surfaces where multi-layers of paint are removed. Peel Away® is available in two different formulations; Peel Away® 1 and Peel Away® 7. Both are Methylene Chloride free (Dichloromethane). The Peel Away® poultice paint removal system was first developed in 1981 to deal effectively with the problems associated with the removal of multiple layers of old lead-based paint, where burning, scraping or sanding would allow lead particles to escape into the environment with the associated health risks caused by such practices. The stripping compound is formulated to turn the lead into lead hydroxide within the paste, so that it can be safely disposed of without endangering the environment or user.

The system is designed to work with the special Peel Away® poultice cover supplied which allows the user to extend the time available so the stripping process can be as complete as possible. This is especially useful where crevices and profiles have allowed the build-up of several times the thickness of the paint compared to flat surfaces. The system will remove paint from many exterior and interior architectural surfaces, including stone, cement, brickwork, plaster walls and ceilings, plain and ornate fibrous plaster cornices, plain and carved or turned woodwork, plain and cast metal work. Automobile, aircraft and marine coatings are also efficiently stripped with the Peel Away® system. The Peel Away® poultice paint removal system has been used for very many high profile restoration projects all over the world. In the UK these have included railings and interiors at The British Museum, ornate plaster ceilings at Greenwich Palace, ironwork on the London Underground and delicate panelling at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The system is frequently specified by

architects as the only appropriate solution for paint removal, where damage to the surface or risk to the environment is an issue. The chemicals used within the stripping pastes are carefully chosen to minimise fumes and odours and are biodegradable and environmentally friendly.

PANORAMIC VIEWS OF LONDON FROM PARAMOUNT HOUSE

owever, in 2011 this seven-storey building within Soho’s Conservation Area, was acquired

by award winning residential developer, Amazon Property, with the intention of converting the 21,500 sq ft mixed-use office/retail space into residential apartments, making this one of the capital’s most sought after office-to-residential conversions.

The internal reconfiguration and refurbishment has created 15 high specification apartments, including a luxury penthouse with panoramic views of the London skyline. Many of the original attractive features of this 1930’s designed building have been retained, including the metal casement frames with lead light glazing and timber sash windows. However, as with any city centre location offering a 24:7 society, noise has to be effectively contained if a peaceful environment is to be achieved.

A solution was found using Selectaglaze’s bespoke range of secondary windows. The frames have high performance seals and are tailor made to ensure the tightest fit. Independent acoustic tests demonstrate very significant levels of noise attenuation, typically 45dB, and the glazing also provides much improved thermal insulation. This, together with the removal of draughts, leads

to increased comfort and reduced energy demand.

Over 200 horizontal and vertically sliding windows were produced in a matt black finish to complement the interior design and toughened safety glass was used throughout.

The windows are fully fabricated in the factory which allows rapid installation and Selectaglaze worked closely with contractor ISG to meet a phased programme and be part of a successful and attractive development.

Founded in 1966 and a Royal Warrant Holder since 2004 Selectaglaze Ltd. has considerable experience of working in buildings of all styles including Listed and traditional. The Company produces an extensive range of literature and guidance notes covering acoustics, thermal performance and added security and offers both a technical advisory service and a RIBA approved CPD Seminar to architects and Interior Designers.

Let the Experts Take Care of your Domestic Waste Water Problems

his is why dealing with a specialist manufacturer, installer and servicer of

treatment plants like We Build It Ltd can give the consumer piece of mind and confidence they are getting the right information, the right solution and the right system.

We Build It Ltd are based in the heart of some of Shropshire’s most outstanding countryside. As one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of domestic sewage treatment plants, we focus on high quality, affordable products. All of our sewage treatment plants are based on the successful and simple extended aeration method. We can design, manufacture, install and service sewage treatment plant for single houses, small developments, rural industrial units, campsites, pubs, hotels, offices, barn conversions and commercial applications. Our products can also be used after an existing septic tank to enable the effluent to be discharged directly to a water causeway, if your existing

Any plant up to 50 people (pe 50) should be manufactured and tested to EN12566-3, this gives the consumer confidence they are getting the right treatment plant for their application, but always ask to see the certificate and test results as these can be manipulated and not show the true outcome of the test.

When it comes to off mains sewage many people can be blown away by all the information and differing products available on the internet, Google “domestic sewage treatment plant” and the consumer is bombarded by plants of all shapes and sizes .

soak away has failed.

We often get asked;

How does it work? What does it cost?Does it use electric? And how much?Do I have to maintain it?How do I install it?How big is it?Do I need to empty it?What can go into the plant? What happens to the waste?Do I need planning permission?Do I need to inform the Environment agency? How long will it last?DOES IT SMELL!!!!!?????

All of these questions can be answered by We Build It experts who know their products inside out; ask a middle man with no knowledge of the industry, product or process these questions and the customer is often baffled by terms such as BOD, COD, NH4, but do they really need to know this? All the homeowner, builder

or architect wants to know is that the product will work with the minimum effort from them during the life of the plant.

We Build It Ltd offer straight forward, easy to follow advice for your sewage treatment needs. All of our sewage treatment plants come with easy to follow installation and service manuals, as well as free telephone assistance by specialist installers. We can also offer full or assisted installations at very competitive rates. We pride ourselves on offering the best GRP products on the market backed up by proper good old-fashioned customer service - (dial straight through and speak to our specialists, no automated service or queuing system) buying a sewage treatment plant can be quite daunting, which plant is best for my situation?? What are

the regulations?? What about the Environment agency?? Etc. but be assured we will be with you every step of the way, making sure you have the right solution designed around your requirements. You deal direct with the manufacturer, with over 25 years waste water experience, 24-7-365 days of the year

For the self-builder the right treatment plant is simple to install providing they have taken the manufacturers advice, be aware some plants need complete concrete backfill which can add to install costs, a well-constructed plant such as the BioPure can be backfilled with pea gravel.

Consider whole life costs, not just the cost of the treatment plant, factor in install costs, power consumption, servicing, consumable spare parts, product life cycle (guarantee) and emptying charges, We Build It Ltd offer a 25 year guarantee on the treatment plant and 2 Years on the air pump.

We can design, manufacture, install and service sewage treatment plant for single houses, small developments, rural industrial units, campsites, pubs, hotels, offices, barn conversions and commercial applications.

Sizing the plant for a single house is simple its number of bedrooms plus two, so a three bedroom house is a 5 person treatment plant, for multiple dwellings using the same treatment plant speak to the manufacturer for the correct size unit, most manufactures range are in increments 1-5, 1-7, 5-13 etc. up to 50 person. (See Our Range To The Right).

Servicing

The consumer needs easy to follow advice for their sewage treatment

The treatment plant you choose should be around 95% efficient thus allowing long intervals before de-sludge is required. The waste water must be cleaned to a standard meeting the usual discharge level requirement, you must apply for either an exemption certificate or permit, before making a discharge we can assist with this and advise on the method of discharge, be it a ditch, stream, watercourse or soakaway.

As the system breaks down and aerates the solids, the introduction of non-degradable items such as wipes, sanitary products etc. should be avoided at all times in any treatment plant, this will clog up the system and increase the

need to empty the unit, follow this instruction and typical emptying will be around 3-5 years, it is also recommended no medicines, or

needs especially when servicing their plant, maintaining any sewage treatment plant, is a very important part of ensuring the efficiency of the system and that you adhere to any operating and maintenance manual and annual servicing.

We strongly advise servicing the system on an annual basis and this will take on average less than an hour to complete. It will also help you to meet your legal requirements with the Environment Agency. We Build It Ltd Service Contracts

Emergency breakdown cover for 12 months. If you have any problem with your unit, call us and we will come out and fix it free of charge. One service visit where all necessary checks are carried out. This includes assessing the aeration pattern, sludge levels and effluent quality. All labour expenses for servicing and call outs are covered so there are no hidden costs. The cost of all serviceable parts will be free of charge. This includes rebuilding the air pump, replacing the diaphragms and also the air filters.Sludge return is carried out as required. This is the removal of settled sludge from the outer scum ring back into the centre chamber to be re digested and treated again. This helps to keep the emptying period low.Emptying is NOT included in the agreement as the Bio-Pure does not require emptying for 3-5 years. The service agreement lasts for 12 months and will also help

Long established European manufacturer of waterproofing solutions, Revestech, haslaunched its exciting range of products in the UK. Included within its product portfoliois DRY 50, a system that provides a complete and reliable solution to waterproofing wetrooms.

The Spanish manufacturer has developed a system that allows showers to be renovatedinto wet rooms at floor level whilst guaranteeing that the finished project will be free ofdamp or water damage; furthermore, it allows bathroom designers, specifiers, buildersor even consumers the freedom to customise their showering space.

Dry 50 provides for classical ‘hipped’drainage where four slopes ensure that water drainsinto a square waste or for the more popular ‘one slope’ drainage where water removal isone directional via a single slope to the waste. Accordingly, Revestech supplies a num-ber of aesthetically pleasing high quality linear wastes from which to choose.

UK importer David Hart says; “We are really excited about the Revestech product port-folio and in particular DRY 50 as I feel that is ‘really scratching where the market is itch-ing’ right now as wet rooms have become hugely popular in the UK. The system has manyUSP’s but its ease of installation and totally reliable performance once installed meansthat it’s a totally safe purchase if you are builder, specifier or installer, and a safe sell if youhappen to be a distributor, merchant or retailer.”

THE GREYWATER IS RISING

hat’s according to UK-based, Reaqua Systems, whose technology enables the

collection of waste-water (so called ‘greywater’) from sinks, baths and showers and recycles it for use in flushing toilets.

Suitable for retrofit as well as new builds and designed for use in residential, commercial and municipal properties, the greywater reuse system reduces the mains water needs of a building by up to 30 per cent and is designed to be easy to install and use.

A revised plumbing set up takes all waste-water from baths and showers, redirecting it through a filtration unit where it is automatically treated with a disinfectant. This treated water is collected in a tank and pumped on, as required, to supply all the flushing water needs for multiple toilets in a building.

London-based, award-winning architectural practice, David Morley Architects is among an increasing number of businesses to fit the

Businesses are increasingly turning to innovative water recycling technology to reduce their water bills and lessen their environmental impact.

technology in their commercial premises.

Camilla Morley, David Morley Architects’ environmental development consultant, said: “Our demand for hot water has increased over the past three years as we have been encouraging a cycle to work policy, supported by additional new in-office showering facilities for our staff. As a company which keeps abreast of progress in sustainable development in all areas of our work, we felt it was both economically and environmentally sensible to fit this technology and an opportunity to set a positive example to our clients.

“The reAqua system reduces our water consumption by up to 30 per cent by recycling the shower water on the first floor to flush the two downstairs toilets, supporting our ‘more with less’ approach to design.”

Reaqua Systems’ CEO, Stephen Bates, said: “As most buildings in the UK have only one water supply, we have, until now, had little option but to put up with the confused logic of using

drinking quality water to flush toilets. The costs associated with the water treatment process, both financially and environmentally in terms of the energy used, are significant and greywater reuse technology represents an immediate and simple way to reduce water demand across the UK.

“With more and more employees cycling to work, and requiring a shower when they arrive, we’re seeing increasing numbers of businesses turning to this technology to cut costs associated with water usage, as well as improving their sustainability profile.”

An optional feature of the Reaqua System ingeniously allows heat to be extracted from the building’s greywater, before it’s recycled, so it can be fed back into the central heating system. The reAqua+ fits a heat exchanger to the grey water reuse link between the bath, shower and toilet flush and recaptures

around 50 per cent of the heat energy from the bathing water, feeding it back into the building’s hot water system reducing fuel bills as well as enabling a two-fold reduction in CO2 emissions.

Prior to the introduction of this technology, water efficiencies have been a challenge to achieve for businesses2. Water rationing technology, such as low flow showers and low flush toilets, have attracted criticism. Consumer feedback has queried the value of this technology with critics highlighting disappointingly low flow rates from showers or, worse, blocked waste pipes. Research3 has shown that using low-flush toilets may not provide sufficient movement in small pipes to carry away solids, leading to blockages and flooding, and additional evidence suggests that these devices may act as a false economy with users running low flow showers for longer in order to improve their experience.

Stephen Bates added: “Aside from reducing water consumption, we also want to be in tune with the way people choose to wash. Unlike flow restriction technology, which is often criticised for producing an increased risk of blocked sewage pipes and disappointingly low flow rates from showers, greywater reuse offers the industry the chance to make considerable water efficiencies, without relying on the end user to make unpopular adjustments to their habits. Bathing luxury with a conscience has arrived.”

Specialist resin systems supplier Resin SurfacesLimited (RSL) was brought in to help with themulti-million pound refurbishment of Manchester’sCentral Library.

The Library recently re-opened to enthusiastic re-views following a three-year refurbishment. RSL’sbrief was to provide a modern flooring solutionthat complemented the Library’s unique neo-classical style.

First opened in 1934, the Grade II* - listed buildingis Britain’s second-largest public library and animportant tourist attraction in the city.

The re-opening of the Library is part of ManchesterCity Council’s drive to deliver first class, accessibleservices and follows the unveiling of the refur-bished Town Hall Extension in July of last year.

Public entrances have been restored to their1930s appearance and new staircases and liftshafts inserted to improve access throughout theCentral Library.

Stockport-based RSL supplied bespoke flooring

systems of R.S Terrazzo and R.S Terrain withR.S Beadgrip for the floor, stairs and ramped areasof the building.

RSL commercial director Martin Wroe said:“Specialprojects like this don’t come round very often. You don’t have the opportunity to be involved inone of Manchester’s most iconic buildings everyday. We needed to find products that wouldcapture the beauty of the environment andcomplement its ornate design.

“The end result needed to be functional as well asbeautiful, given the amount of traffic expectedthrough the building.

“We also faced the challenge of working along-side a number of other contractors, due to thesheer scale of the project, but the installation ranreally smoothly.

“We think visitors to the building will be amazedby the transformation achieved in the buildingand we are delighted to have been involved inbringing this beloved landmark right up to date

while restoring and showcasing its heritagefeatures back to their former glory.”

Councillor Rosa Battle, Executive Member for Cul-ture and Leisure for Manchester City Council, said:"From floor to ceiling to its state-of-the-art facilities, the transformation of Manchester Central Libraryhas been all about painstaking attention to detail. The enthusiastic reactions shows that CentralLibrary is a spectacular asset for the city."

RSL put forward a bespoke design of R.S Terrazzoin a special colour pallet to complement the neo-classical design features. The system was chosenbecause of its seamless properties, ensuring aflat, continuous floor surface was achieved.

The product was also used as a pre-cast terrazzosystem on some stair areas.

R.S Terrain was applied on the ramped areas withR.S Beadgrip for improved slip resistance.

Airius – Solving the biggest waste of energy in buildings today

he only reason why this technique is not more widespread is that there is little awareness of

how adaptable it is for use in virtually any space, with ceiling heights ranging from a normal offi ce to a high-bay warehouse.

Any building refi t project that has a ceiling height between 2.5 and 38 metres can potentially make savings of up to 50% on their heating and cooling costs through destratifi cation, from offi ces to aircraft hangars. They are also no more complicated to install than a light fi tting, meaning systems can be easily implemented into buildings both old and new.

Everyone knows that hot air rises, accumulating at the ceiling, whilst cool air falls, becoming trapped or escaping out of windows and doors etc. This air then

Thermal destratifi cation, the balancing of internal temperatures by recirculating rising hot air and sinking cool air, which has been described as the missing piece to the HVAC puzzle, is simple, eff ective and remarkably economical.

thermal equalisation - in other words, to balance temperatures between the fl oor and ceiling. The way to do this turns out to be remarkably simple, involving no complex programming of a building energy management system, no need for additional HVAC units that need regular statutory inspections, or ductwork that will need expensive cleaning.

To fully destratify and achieve maximum savings it is vital to aff ect every inch of air in the space. The only way to accomplish this it to ensure airfl ow from the ceiling reaches the fl oor and spreads into every corner.

Only Airius’ fans are designed to continuously move a column of air to the fl oor, similar to a ducted system, but without the need for ducting and avoiding any draught disturbances. It then spreads out in 360° throughout the space, blanketing along the fl oor and underneath any obstructions - a

unique, patented method which is proven to achieve full temperature equalisation (within a 2oC band) in any space, reducing heating/cooling and CO2 emissions for their clients by up to 50%, sometimes more.

It’s no wonder the Carbon Trust recommends destratifi cation as one of its top three carbon saving measures.

So who is using this technology and is it working for them? Lush Cosmetics reported a ROI of 26 days at their Poole factory. Morrisons supermarkets turned to Airius to resolve the problem of having too-chilly food aisles alongside too-warm household aisles. At the Genentech temperature-controlled pharmaceutical warehouse in Louisville, Kentucky, a major commercial disaster was averted after the US Food and Drug Administration found the higher warehouse bays were too warm to be fi t for purpose. Airius destratifi cation fans resolved these issues within days.

With a customer portfolio ranging from British Airways to Mercedes, Airius has seen an outstanding 150% growth over the past two years. Now in its 10th year, Airius has enjoyed numerous successes, including winning the ‘Innovation Award for Environmental Technology’ at the highly coveted Environment and Energy Awards 2014. The awards, which took place in April 2014, are widely regarded as one of the highest accolades for sustainability in the corporate sector. They recognise excellence and innovation in sustainable business practices, and Airius triumphed over stiff competition, including DIY giant B&Q, to scoop the award.

needs to be replaced to keep fl oor level comfortable. The higher the ceiling the greater this temperature gradient, but nevertheless, the principal applies in any space. Recycle and re-use the heat that rises and/or cool air that sinks and the savings are going to be immediate.

New insulation system will save time and moneyA new home insulation system which can beat the Britishweather and save time and money is being launched in the UK.

The ECAP system from home insulation and safety spe-cialists GTi is set to more than halve the time it usually takesto externally insulate buildings of solid wall construction.

The secret is its pre-finished external insulation systemwhich means it is instantly wind and water tight unlikemore traditional methods that are at the mercy of theweather. And it is far quicker and simpler to install thanother systems.

The ECAP system, the first of its type, is a process of sheets ofsemi-finished polystyrene for an exterior thermal insulationcomposite system (ETICS) and each sheet is made of a layerof coating and a fiberglass mesh protruding on two sides. For more information Tel. 01369 702070 or visit www.gti-limited.com

Thermocrete Chimney Linings are celebrating their 40th year

he main reason for the rapid expansion is due to their professional team of Approved

The success of their unique process in the U.K. has led to many enquiries from abroad. Allan spent two years in North America where he researched franchise techniques and came back to the U.K. with a wealth of knowledge and understanding of Franchising.

The fi rst Franchise was sold in January 1979 and proved to be a very lucrative exercise for both Thermocrete and the new Franchisee. Research has shown the Country could support

Allan Barnes formed the business in Bradford, West Yorkshire in July 1974 and since its formation, Thermocrete Chimney Linings has grown from a small one man business into a prosperous, thriving network.

College Court scores a hat-trick at RIBA East Midlands awards

ood things come in threes, and College Court certainly proves the rule as it has walked

away from the Royal Institute of British Architects East Midlands Awards with wins in no less than three categories. The University of Leicester’s Conference Centre and Hotel Project, which transformed a former University Halls of Residence into a state-of-the-art conference facility and Hotel, was named Building of Year at the RIBA regional awards ceremony on 15 May, as well receiving a Conservation Award and an East Midlands Regional Award.

Three more accolades, including Building of the Year, follow RICS award earlier this month

“This is testament to the excellent project team that work tirelessly to deliver a high quality facility on time and on budget. The University is quite rightly proud of College Court and I am flattered that the RIBA has recognised our work with these awards” Trevor Humphreys, Director of Estates.

They follow the award of a Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) East Midlands Regional Award for Building Conservation Project of the Year earlier in May. Members of College Court and the University’s Division of Estates and Facilities Management collected the awards, which celebrate of architectural excellence in the region. Regional winners will be put forward for the RIBA National Awards in June. Trevor Humphreys, Director of Estates, said: “This is testament to the excellent project team that work tirelessly to deliver a high

quality facility on time and on budget. The University is quite rightly proud of College Court and I am flattered that the RIBA has recognised our work with these awards.” Steve Crawford, College Court Conference Centre Director, said: “The recent awards won by College Court have come about from great teamwork, clear focus on what we wanted to achieve, and at the heart

of all our decisions when developing the project was the customer. These have laid the foundations for College Court as it now successfully operates as a leading conference centre & hotel. The customer is the heart of the business and with the excellent team in place to run College Court I am confident that we will build upon the recent success.” College Court is a £17.5 million project which turned the University’s Grade II listed College Hall buildings into a leading residential conference venue. The buildings were originally designed by internationally renowned architects Trevor Dannatt and Leslie Martin and were originally built as catered student accommodation. The refurbishment was designed by Associated Architects of Birmingham and constructed by Wilmott Dixon. The new designs met with the approval of one of the original architects, Trevor Dannatt. The development also houses 18 conference rooms, 123 en suite bedrooms, restaurant, bar, private dining room and garden lounge. The Grade II listed buildings, located close to the City Centre, had been out of use for around eight years.

Interiors & Interior DesignTHE INTERIORS GROUPFIT-OUT NEWRELOCATEDOFFICES FORINSTINCTIF PARTNERS,AN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS

CONSULTANCY SITUATED AT 65 GRESHAM ST. LONDON.The Instinctif partnership model helps clients growand prosper by placing deep rooted specialistcommunications skills alongside market leadinginsights and understanding. The relocation coincided with the announcement ofInstinctif Partners’new name (having previously beenknown as College Group) and so it was imperativethat the stylish and innovative environment reflectedthe brand essence of the new name as well as thediversity of the business. The final design thereforefeatures both a corporate yet creative mixture ofspace.Working closely with the client Kathryn O’Callaghan,Head of Design at The Interiors Group has designedspecific joinery pieces, the media wall, the bespokefeature walls, reception desk and lighting within thefront of house. The flooring consists of a beautifulporcelain tile and Interface luxury living featurecarpeting. A backlit reception desk shows the client’stwelve corporate colours on rotation and glowilluminating the company name “Instinctif Partners.”

Leather cream seating is utilised in the visitors waitingarea, whilst a glass coffee table creates a sleek smartcontrast against the black carpet flooring and thefeature lighting set in the ceiling. A large 8-10 screenmedia wall creates the main focal point.Leading on from the front of house through thetransition zone is a custom-made wall coveringcreated by the Instinctif in-house design team, whichadds personality to the space. Whilst a glass slattedfeature wall gives the visitor a glimpse of the openplan office whilst keeping staff privacy. The overallcolour scheme within the main office space ispredominantly neutral with white and light gray tonescombined with rich purple feature walls and withinthe carpeting. Bright colours are introduced in softseating and breakout areas – helping to add warmthand inject fun into this rather elegant plan. The layoutof the open plan office is particularly interesting as itis designed as a circular newsroom with a circularhigh table in the heart of the space. The table is high-lighted by an oversized dome pendent.

The Boardroom and meeting rooms utilise a mattblack colour for the feature wall giving it a key look ofsophistication. The lighting throughout this designscheme reflects the shape of the main office tablewithin the ceiling and lighting design.Commenting on the build and design, Donna Zurcher,Managing Partner said: “We are delighted with ourstriking new office environment. Home automation systems are often designed from a technical point of view, but the young Belgian company Basalte believes that you should be able to control everything in an intuitive and simple way. This innovative company designs products for the modern smart home.

From the beginning, Basalte’s mainspring was to develop user-friendly products with a sophisticated user interface and a beautiful design. Basalte’s timeless and exclusive product range consists of unique and intelligent design switches based on advanced touch technology. One of these innovative switches is Sentido, a square-shaped light switch that is divided into two or four equal surfaces, each with its different functions. In this way, lights and curtains can be controlled even at the slightest touch. The use of high-quality touch-sensitive metal surface not only results in a pure, timeless and highly innovative design, but also creates a great and unique user experience. Basalte also developed Deseo, an intelligent room controller with an integrated thermostat. Besides being a beautiful thermostat, Deseo can also control all home automation functions of a room in an intuitive way.

BASALTEWHERE INGENUITY MEETS SIMPLICITY

Another product of Basalte is Eve, an elegant frame to secure an iPad in style on the wall. This frame turns the iPad and also iPod touch in an amazing on-wall touch screen. Eve frames offer a sober but elegant solution to replace a complex touch screen for a home automation system that often dominates the room. Basalte always looks for an emotional connection when designing products and sees to it that products not only look or feel good, but also are great fun to use. The company’s continuous commitment to accessible technology and quality design has been awarded the last six years with more than 20 international design awards.

Basalte products add comfort by simplifying the user experience in the modern home, because simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Evacuation lifts Emergency power specialistsNew office movePower Systems International Limited, established in 1986 produces custom engineered power solutions for such uses as the emergency power for Evacuation Lifts as defined in the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995 and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order of 2005.About the company:

ver the past few years, following on from their participation in the Cambridgeshire County Council’s

“evacuation of disabled persons from Public Buildings” initiative, the Company has completed a record number of high profile installations of their ELPS emergency power systems. The Power Systems International team works closely with Lift manufacturers, Local Authority Fire Safety Officers, Disability Officers, Consulting Engineers and Architects to determine the best cost effective means to deliver power “on demand” to a dedicated evacuation lift in the event of an emergency.

We have appreciated the feed back!

Jon Hill, Managing Director said “We have taken note of customer feedback about features that users wanted to have on future emergency power systems for evacuation lifts”.

“The new series 3 ELPS product announced by Power Systems International Limited

is simply a “Black Box” point of use power system and features two internal and one external power circuits to feed power to any sort of lift.”

Our ELPS can be sited as close as possible to the lift and installed in a well ventilated indoors location. Installation is simple and being able to install the ELPS close to the point of use, reduces cable runs and reduces the risk of damage to or theft of cables. These risks are greater where a “Centralised” back-up power systems are in place remote use, the lift in this case.

About the Product:“Black Box” ELPS series 3 evacuation lift power system

The ELPS is generally the size of a large filing cabinet and can be housed in most cases in the plant or electrical rooms required in lift installations, or can even be housed in the “cupboard under the stairs”. Its installation is relatively quick and simple. We provide a bypass box which once installed allows for us to quickly and easily attached cables to our unit, and these come with the ELPS.

This wall mounting box is also provided with a manual change-over bypass switch. This allows the unit to be safely installed and maintained. In the correct position the unit will provide power from the mains, or battery in the event of a loss of power.

The emergency

There are many emergencies which may result in a building or part of a building needing to be evacuated, and not just fire. Earthquake tremors, explosion, a security threat, impact damage from crashing vehicle, flooding, storm damage, chemical, gas or other vapour release into the atmosphere. More likely is a loss of power from the grid, or a “Power Cut”.

Whether these lead to a call to evacuate will vary depending on the location and the use of the building. The majority of evacuations in the UK over the past 10 years have focussed on fire, toxic fumes and smoke emission and the exceptional storm water flooding and mains power line failures over the winter of 2013.

We are usually told do not use lifts in a fire emergency. However it might be permitted to use an appropriate lift under supervision for the evacuation of disabled persons where it would be a slow and daunting task to use exit stairways for wheel chair bound persons.

The decision would have to be made based on the threat to life, and it is possibly that a suitable lift that is a distance away from the reported emergency hazard area. If the risk is seen to be less than staying in the building or evacuating personnel into an unknown hazard, then an evacuation lift can be used.

The emergency alarm

It is very likely a well designed Building Management System (BMS) in a large building will have smoke detectors, thermal monitors, probably carbon monoxide sensors. It will probably also initiate a sprinkler system if a fire has been detected, and that it will then alert the emergency services to respond. Whether this happens automatically or via human interaction by someone pressing a “smash glass” fire alarm on seeing fire or detecting smoke, is not

important to our unit, other than in the event of a fire an alarm system is triggered.

Unfortunately the ELPS in not human, it has a memory but must be “informed” about an emergency by an automatic signal from the BMS. The ELPS will, however detect a mains failure and will be ready to deliver power.

Why an ELPS?

Each of the other solutions have problems. Dual feed is fine so long as either or feeds are still working. Often in a power cut both feeds will go down. Also in the event of fire often all electricity is cut. The other solution is a diesel generator. This requires a separate building. They are noisy, smelly and eco-unfriendly. They require much more maintenance, and they have an increased risk of theft of fuel and damage to cabling.

For a cost effective, quiet and eco-friendly solution to give you peace of mind there is one obvious solution>>>>

The ELPS product from the Power Systems International is the more secure and best cost effective means of providing power to make the difference for emergency evacuation lifts:

The ELPS delivers power when it is needed. The ELPS delivers power to the point where it is needed. No fumes, no smell, no fuel storage, no noise, no pollution just needs little energy to keep the internal batteries charged!

Easy Stair is a temporary staircase which provides access to upper oors prior to the installation of permanent stairs.

Easy Stair is particularly useful when a project involves the instal-lation of quality, expensive stairs as installing a temporary stair-case can prevent damage to the nished staircase. Preventing damage to the nished stairs can potentially save a great deal of money, delays and problems!

Where a bespoke staircase is being installed Easy Stair alsoallows greater time to nalise the design and manufacture without delaying the program.

Easy Stair allows easy access for clients to gain access to upper oors during site meetings and view site progress.

A temporary staircase will also speed up the building process as site operatives can use a speedy, safe method of access (rather than ladders) - again saving money and potentially reducing the program time.

Easy Stair is delivered to site fully assembled, it is simply lifted into position secured by two screws and the handrails inserted into either side. The stair unit weighs only 25kg and is available throughout the UK on a next day delivery service.

When used with suitable stairwell edge protection, stairwells can be safer, easier and improve productivity from the very start of the construction process.

The stairs are 600mm wide and suit oor to oor heights ranging from 2.65m to 3.05m.

With the 2016 Government-imposed deadline for BIM use on publicly-funded projects approaching, awareness of BIM and adoption rates amongspecifiers is growing rapidly, with almost half of respondents sourcing BIMobjects from a specialist BIM library according to the findings of the latestNBS National BIM Survey.

The Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA) is the first trade organisation tohave its BIM objects included on the NBS National BIM Library. Launchingseven most commonly used roof build ups - which are ideally suited for theuse of single ply systems on flat, pitched or curved roofs - these BIM objectscan be switched to a specific manufacturer’s product as the projectprogresses.

With commitment to BIM there are real opportunities to deliver improvedbuildings at the heart of the community (schools, hospitals, shelteredhousing etc.) alongside the project supply chain benefiting from standard-ised information and collaboration enabling better decision-making,improved productivity, increased efficiency, competitive advantage andhigher profitability.

And sourcing BIM objects from an industry-leading library means objects arealways current and accurate. Quick and easy to download, specifiers have theadditional reassurance that the seven roof types available on the NBS NationalBIM Library have been designed to SPRA standards and guidelines.

“Following our discussions with NBS last year concerning the role ofindustry-recognised trade bodies assisting with the development of genericBIM objects, we are delighted to be the first trade organisation to havelaunched our BIM programme,” commented James Talman, SPRA CEO.

Deciding on a look for a new build or renovation canbe a seriously stressful experience for the end client, whether they be a self builder or a multi-national organisation. Many wrestle with the dilemma of using modern materials for a sleek and fresh look or theuse traditional materials such as wood. Whilst naturalwood cladding represents a sizeable chunk of thewall cladding and façade market place, it is an areathat must be fully understood if you are to achievethe look you want for a long period of time. That isbecause most timber cladding will fade significantlyand begin to rot over time unless it is treated with theappropriate paint or stain at regular intervals. An alternative to using natural timber comes in theform of a fast growing new product made using timbercomposites. That is where natural timber is usedwithin a composite mix to create a material that is more suited to battling the elements over an extended life cycle in all weather conditions. DuraCladding is one such product on the market whereselected recycled wood and recycled high densitypolyethylene is used to create a cladding range thatoffer the natural appearance of wooden claddingbut without the hassle or expense of periodic main-tenance to preserve the wood. Timber composite cladding still represents a tinymargin of the overall market, and UK suppliers

are few and far between, but it seems key decisionmakers are finally realising its’ true value for newbuilds or refurbishments. One of the main points to note for the eco-minded isthat a quality timber composite product like DuraCladding can be just as green as wood, if not more.A report from CERAM UK confirmed that DuraCladding meets the highest sustainability specifica-tions. It is made of 87% recycled materials, and was the first timber composite supplier to becomeFSC ® 100% certified.Whereas traditional wood planks require regularpainting or staining to preserve their natural beautyand protect them, UV inhibitors can be added to aquality timber composite at the point of manufactureto protect against the elements.Another thing to remember when choosing a sup-plier is that the best ones offer warranties of up to 25years – at least a decade longer than the life-cycle ofthe average hardwood alternative. Quality timber composite cladding is further charac-terised by the fact that it won’t crack, shrink, warp or rot.To illustrate how Dura Cladding can be used both traditionally and also in a more contemporary format, the Dura premises were recently fitted with the recently launched 150/21 Weatherboard product in

Barn Black for the main factory and 200/21 Flush inPale Grey for the more contemporary office buildingat the front of the premises. The series of photostaken during the installation help illustrate not onlyhow relatively simple the material is to install for pro-fessionals, but also how much of a transformation canbe accomplished across a large area with a relativelysmall outlay. Most visitors to the premises do not believe that natural wood has not be used to createa such a traditional barn look, and are excited aboutthe prospect of having little maintenance to do andare attracted by the fact that according to acceleratedUV test results, the material will retain the vast pro-portion of its colour throughout its 25 year design life.Aesthetics are always subjective and can be a highlyemotive subject for the façade of a building. What isnot subjective though is life cycle costs. Due to thelack of maintenance required, and the long designlife, although composite cladding purchase costsmay be higher than some natural wood cladding, itcan actually work out significantly cheaper when life cycle costs are considered. Being 87% recycledand available as FSC© 100% the green aspect is thoroughly covered as well.FFoorr ffuurrtthheerr iinnffoorrmmaattiioonn ccaallll:: 0011225555 442233660011EE:: eennqquuiirriieess@@dduurraaccoommppoossiitteess..ccoommWWeebb::wwwwww..dduurraaccoommppoossiitteess..ccoomm

Safety, Security & Fire Protection

The days of looking for a torch with working bat-teries when the lights go out due to a tripped cir-cuit breaker are truly numbered thanks to CPN-Cudis. The circuit protection specialist hasdeveloped an illuminated LED strip that is acti-vated when the cover of the consumer unit isopened. This makes access and resetting the af-fected breaker simple and safer especially forusers with sight impairment or mobility difficul-ties and who are particularly vulnerable when acircuit breakers trips.

The illuminated LED strip can be specified pre-in-stalled in CPN brand 17th Edition and other con-sumer units in the range. Activated by a microswitch when the cover is opened, the low powersix light LED strip has an integral long-life bat-tery that is easily accessed for replacement.

Peter O’Neill, business manager for CPN-Cudisexplained, “Consumer units are very often hid-den away under stairs, in cupboards or in otherdark locations. The householder usually needs tofind a working torch to see which MCB hastripped. The new LED strip is simple to install byanyone with basic DIY skills, though social hous-ing landlords may want this to be done by anelectrician. This is an ideal task to specify within

upgrade programmes to local council or privateproperties that can make a big difference to thesafety and convenience of occupiers.”

The LED strips are available nationwide via theCPN-Cudis stockist network. A video has beenproduced to illustrate the problem when lights failand improvements in access and safety the LEDstrips make in identifying a tripped MCB, RCD orRCBO that has failed. Dedicated web pages withmore information can be seen on the web atwww.cudis-led.co.uk where details of the nearestCPN-Cudis stockist can also be found.

“We think that this development will be of great-est benefit to the vulnerable, but any consumerwill appreciate the greater convenience andspeed that it will provide. We have electriciansqualified to 17th Edition codes on hand to assistover the telephone any installers or wholesalerswho need advice with any aspect of LED strip ap-plication,” Peter concluded.

ORKFORCE AND A SUSTAINABLE

A useful tool for your customers – The Hire Calculator

his was first released in the Autumn, on our website, with some members adopting it on

their own pages: Adams Catering Hire and erento UK for example.

This useful calculator allows you to enter key information about a kit item and then provides a recommendation to Hire or Buy, including an indication of the overall financial advantage gained by doing one over the other!

You can try the app for yourself here: www.hae.org.uk/hirecalculator

The web version was followed earlier this year by the release of a mobile app, announced quite proudly at January’s Hire Convention, and which has been adopted among members with some moderate success!

Throughout 2013 the HAE EHA boffins were devising a useful new tool that helps calculate the benefit of hiring equipment, as opposed to buying it.

Downloading the mobile app is simple, just visit iTunes or Google Play on your mobile and search for “Hire Association”, then follow the instructions to install on your device.

The Hire Calculator is available on the aforementioned link to our website but, better than that, you can deploy the feature into your own web pages! To find out how, and get the HTML codes contact Stuart on 44 (0)121 380 4622 or email [email protected].

Some more information on the apps, and the Hire vs. Buy campaign can be viewed on our YouTube channel: http://youtu.be/uCMzp7c6YTcDownloading the mobile app

is simple, just visit iTunes or Google Play on your mobile and search for “Hire Association”, then follow the instructions to install on your device.

The mobile app is particularly powerful as, not only does it recommend a course of action, but also utilises your phones GPS system to locate the nearest HAE EHA member, providing the information in an interactive map view.

These two invaluable tools form a key part of The Association’s ongoing campaign to raise awareness of hire to the end-user demographic, to that end we are devising some merchandising campaigns to carry this message out to the wider business and DIY audiences.

We also have another important marketing channel… you! Your websites, your hire shops and your staff and teams can all play a part in spreading the word about the benefits of hire. By adopting the Hire Calculator on your websites and by promoting the mobile app in your outlets you can give your patrons a superb value-added service!

Homebuilding Show Visitor Attendance increases

20 per cent increase in visitor numbers at The National Homebuilding and Renovating

Show and The Home Improvement Show this year put 500 companies from the self-build, renovation and home improvement markets in front of 32,353 keen home improvers and serious self-builders reinforcing the increasing demand for property advice and expertise in the marketplace.

For the first time, the two shows joined forces at the NEC, Birmingham from 27-30 March, to extend the range and choice of companies showcasing their offerings within the renovating, interior, eco and self build industries and to enhance the consumer experience.

The events also attracted five per cent more exhibitors who engaged with consumers to discuss their latest products and new technologies, resulting in 15 per cent of extended floor space. 75 per cent of companies have subsequently rebooked stands at future Homebuilding and Renovating events.

This year Centaur brought on board a new feature, the Energy Saving Home, which became the highlight exhibit at the shows. This offered consumers insight into the latest eco devices and Government schemes to help them save money and control their household energy consumption through sustainable living.

In addition, The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show welcomed a new expert to the panel - Piers Taylor, award-winning RIBA architect and co-presenter of

20 per cent increase in visitor attendance at The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show and The Home Improvement Show at NEC, Birmingham, highlights returning confidence to the self-build and renovation markets

BBC2 series ‘The House that £100k Built’. He shared his knowledge on the importance of investing time and money in a renovation and how to choose the right companies for materials and finding a designer and an architect for a project.

Nick Noble, Joint MD of Centaur Home Interest Media, says: “The shows’ successful figures for the first exhibitions in 2014 shed light on the evolving consumer trends within the property market. There is a general feeling that the industry has started to pick up and this was highlighted by the increased number of exhibitors, their range of services and new features. Additional visitors this year contributed to the events’ achievements and the majority of consumers were serious selfbuilders and home improvers who spent a considerable amount of time liaising with relevant businesses and making informed purchasing decisions.”

The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show and The Home Improvement Show attracted exhibitors covering a wide range of sectors to cater for all interests. From kitchens, bathrooms, home electronics, garden, interiors and flooring to design, finance, energy sustainability, restoration and legal issues, consumers were able to receive valuable guidance for every type of project.

Simon Orrells, Managing Director of Frame Wise Ltd, says: “Great to see the level of interest at The Homebuilding and Renovating Show over the last 4 days and how focused self builders are now on delivering the ‘Fabric First Approach’ and building energy efficient homes for themselves. This gives them fixed running costs which is great news for our range of ‘Wise Wall Solution’s Panel System’s. Let’s build with more Timber!”

The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show and The Home Improvement Show were held at the NEC from 27-30 March 2014. The next show called The Southern Homebuilding, Renovating and Home Improvement Show runs at Sandown Park, Surrey from 28-29 June as there are events held throughout the country each year.
