INT

RO

DU

CT

ION

TH

IS is the secondpublication by Sylvania to

be devoted entirely tothe subject of educa-

tional television. The

first, Television in

Education,

published in mid-1962,

covered four distinct as-pects of E

TV

:its background and

accomplish-

ments, how

television istransm

itted, some of the

equipment requirem

ents,and the facilities w

ithinthe school w

hich shouldbe prepared to accom

mo-

date the use of televisionin the curriculum

.

Although there w

as hardly ashortage of inform

-ative literature on any

aspect of this important

subject, we felt w

ecould still m

ake a helpful con-tribution in the form

of abrief and lucid survey

of the above aspectsthat w

ould serve as agood

starting point for thenon-technical school adm

in-istrator. T

he enthusiasticreception accorded that

first book (includingits use as a text at H

arvard)quickly confirm

ed ourjudgm

ent.

This response also

included a number of ques-

tions that indicatedthe need for m

oredetailed

knowledge about equipm

ent,especially the specific

types needed toaccom

plish the various usesto

which television has already

been put. Again, the

answers to m

ostof these questions

could be foundam

ong theconsiderable bulk of literature

alreadyin existence, but not in

the readily availableform

atw

e hadpreviously found to be so

useful.

Hence, w

e decided toproduce a second book

thatw

ould concentrate onthe "hardw

are" of ET

V,

andinclude a num

ber of typical ET

V system

sranging

from sim

--le electronicenlargem

ent to fullyequipped Ptudios. W

herefeasible, a suggested

equipment list for each

is provided.H

owever, equipm

entrepresents only a portion

of the total investment

that a school must

make.

Installation alone is asignificant part, and can be

realistically estimated only

in terms of a specific

school.

.. its location, type of

construction, thedistances to be covered,

number of transm

ittingand receiving points

and the over-allcom

plexityof the system

. To this

must be added the

continuingoverhead costs of m

aintenanceand personnel.

We m

ention these factorsnot to discourage any-

one fromreading on beyond this page,

but only tohelp place as realistic a

perspective as possible atyour disposal.

After m

ore than ten years,tele-

vision's role in theeducational process has

beenproven repeatedly

to be a valuable one, eventhough

the vast majority of

schools have yet to takead-

vaatage of it.T

aus it is to your interest as aneducator, as w

ellas to

Pvlvania's as an equipment

manufacturer,

that any step into televisionbe taken w

ith as fullan understanding

of all its ramifications as

possible.
