Adequately assessing rhe taxonomic treatment of such a diverse taxon as

the phylum Mollusca from a Texas-sizedcoastal region is very difficult. 'This

reviewer, in evaluating the quality of coverage for his specialty group, foundaccurate, up-to-date accounts of the 13 species within, all correctly identifiedto species. 'This was no small task, given current upheavals in molluscan

taxonomy; it bodes well for the remaining 900 mollusks included, of the

and generously illustrates physical settings (river drainages, lagoons,

beaches, and mud Hats) along with biogenic habitats (sea grass meadows,

mangroves, oyster reefs, and deeper banks). Full-page plates show the

mollusks characteristic of each. 'The species accounts constituting most

of the book brieHy describe shell color pattern, shape, and sculpture,

grouped under headings that summarize anatomical and lifesrylc

characteristics of families. Excellent color photos 30-60 mrn in maximum

illustrated range over four orders of magnitude (0.35-600 mrn), so users

must heed the stated actual dimensions. '111e book is amply referenced,

[Visited Oct'] 0] ABC-CLlO's online encyclopedia American History(Academic Edition), not to be confused with the public library version

American HistOJY, is a new addition to a crowded marketplace of onlineacademic encyclopedias, many of which are ABC-CLIO products. This

database gets high marks in terms of aesthetics and usability. 'The pagesare nicely arranged with plenty of white space. And academic institutions

that subscribe to other ABC-CLIO online encyclopedias will be ableto save money on the subscription price and move between the various

online products using a simple drop-down menu located on the left sideof the page. Content can be accessed in three ways. 'The first is a Quick

Search box on the landing page. Another access point is a link to an

Advanced Search page, which lets users narrow a search by era or variouscontent categories. 'The final (and easiest) way to access content is via

the Eras tab, which rakes users to a page with several publisher-definederas. 'These divisions, which begin with the pre-American-Revolution

exploration and conquering of America, closely mirror the eras mosthistorians use and arc further subdivided. Entries in these sections are

short and concise, do a good job of being as neutral as possible, andcontain links to materials used and citations.

'111e Idea Exchange section expands the Analyze section found in thenonacademic version of this online encyclopedia. In the nonacademic

AmericanHistory, Analyze features articles with an intentionally strongerpoint of view. 'I11is section highlights the "key question" of a specific era,

offers suggested questions for studying the era, and gives readers more

resources on a specific ropic. In the AcademicEdition, the Idea Exchangesections vary in the materials they offer, with the addition of video, audio,

and other digitized sources of information to the entries derailing newerhistorical events. Idea Exchange sections begin with a historical question, such as "Should Ford Have Pardoned Nixon?" followed by signed

scholarly essays that cover various aspects of the argument. Beyond thevaluable content and scholarly sources these sections contain, the essays

also allow students a chance to study how scholarly arguments are writtenby professionals within the field of history. American History (AcademicEdition) is a high-quality, visually appealing, low-cost addition to ABCCLIO's online encyclopedias. Summing Up: Highly recommended.

Cited reference searching is bidy easy, via a list that allows searchersto select citation variants to improve result accuracy. As noted above, the ability to search or browse for standardized tide abbreviationsimproves search accuracy. 'These citation indexes were once the only

option for cited reference searching. Resources like Scopus <hnp://www.info.scivcrsc.corn/scopus/» (CII, Jul'05, 42-6232) and Google Scholar(CH, Jul'07, 44-5957) also provide it. Inclusion of cited references inthe databases provides the basis for Web ofScience's "related references"feature: references arc ranked as related based on the number of referencesthey share with the initial reference. In practice, however, the number of

shared references seems to be less indicative of relatedness than the ratioof shared references to total references. Users can reline search results byusing hedges-subject areas, document types, years, languages, and more.In addition, search results can be analyzed by author name, institution,

funding agency, ctc., resulting in a ranked list of the selected facet ofanalysis. Users can create free accounts in which to save searches and setup search alerts. Additional resources that can be added on the Web of

Knowledge platform include BIOSIS Previews,]oumrt! Citation Reports, and many more. If these databases arc included in a library's subscription, links are available to sec the references therein. Unfortunately, searchresults cannot be refined to exclude references that arc also found inother databases. Users can exporr database references in many formats,

including those for bibliographic management software like EndNote(CH, Feb'08, 45-2929), ProCite, and Relworks. Summing Up:Recommended. ** Upper-division undergraduates through faculty/researchers.-j. M. Miller, UnioersityoiToledo
